I N S AYVILLE S A RT D EPARTMENT It is often said that positive feedback from a former student is perhaps a teacher’s best legacy. What then would be working with a former student who has also become a teaching colleague? Exceedingly amazing, right? Well, this has occurred not once, but twice, in Sayville School District’s Art Department. FIRST: Lincoln Avenue Art Teacher Mrs. Anne Marie Podlas recalls that when she moved in 1965 from a private school in Queens to public school in Sayville, “Sunrise Drive Elementary school was where my love for Art started. I came from a school with no formal Art class, just a crayon lesson on copying what the teacher created maybe once a month.” “In Sayville, once a week for 45 minutes, I was introduced to the wonderful world of Art. Miss Mary Vahanian was a young Art Teacher with long red hair who was very patient, kind, and full of inspirational creativity. She opened doors to Art that I never knew existed and inspired me to be an Art Teacher! I owe a lot to the experiences that I had with her, especially in my Sixth- grade Art class.” As Mrs. Podlas went on to college, she assumed her Sunrise Drive Art Teacher married and had a family, but little did she guess that one day she and Mrs. Mary Anselmo (who just retired in 2006) would become colleagues in Sayville Schools! SECOND: When she was a student in Lincoln Avenue Elementary school, Mrs. Jeanette Ainslie felt fortunate to have Mrs. Podlas as her Art Teacher. “I always looked forward to Art class. I remember walking down the hallway, anxiously awaiting the exciting projects that Mrs. Podlas had planned for the day. She would always greet the class with a warm, welcoming smile, and direct us to sit at the numbered tables in eager anticipation. I remember loving to create something original, something memorable. Mrs. Podlas also introduced me to the world of Art History and taught me how to use a wide variety of art materials. I always wanted to be just like her. She loved her job as an Art Teacher and loved her students.” Many years later, Mrs. Ainslie fulfilled her dream of becoming just like Mrs. Podlas. “I started my educational career teaching Fifth grade at a NYC public school, hopeful that someday I could fulfill my dream of becoming an Art educator. Years later, I felt lucky when I was hired and began teaching Art at Sayville Middle School and now at Sunrise Drive (replacing the now retired Mary Anselmo). I love my job and love my students. I am very fortunate, once again, to be learning from, while working with, Mrs. Podlas. She has been my inspiration, my teacher, and now my friend. I feel blessed to know her and lucky to have learned from her. I hope someday I can be as influential to my students as Mrs. Podlas has been for me.” Drawing the connection between her teacher, Mrs.Anselmo, and her student, Mrs. Ainslie, Mrs. Podlas, who herself has served more than 25 years in Sayville, appreciates the coincidence of her colleagues in the Sayville Art department. “I feel so humble and flattered to have been influenced by and to have influenced such terrific artists!” D ISTRICT N EWSLETTER V OLUME 22.6 http://www.sayville.k12.ny.us J J ANUARY ANUARY 2007 2007 I N S AYVILLE S A RT D EPARTMENT N EWSWORTHY Congratulations to the following nine students from Sayville Middle School and three from the High School who had their artwork exhibited in the annual “Colors Of Long Island Exhibit” at the Stony Brook Museum, along with more than three hundred students from across Long Island. GEORGE MTap dancing their way through the

biographical musical production ofGGeeoorrggee MM , approximately seventySayville Middle School studentsshowcased their diverse talents withfoot-stomping vitality.

Playing the lead role of “YankeeDoodle Dandy” George MichaelCohan, gifted performer Kenny Murraywas the perfect fit for “the brash andbrassy giant of the American musicaltheatre.” While it is a true story of hisloves (wives: Ethel-Emily Holub andAgnes-Molly McCauley) and losses, themusical mostly focused on Cohan’smeteoric rise to fame and fortune.Accompanied by his parents Jerry,

(Jimmy Harlin), Nellie (Marra Kassman),and sister Josie (Briana Gomez), Georgeled the Four Cohans away fromvaudeville and revolutionized theBroadway musical.

In stylish period costumes, theMiddle School cast performed Cohan’smost celebrated songs and danceroutines, including: Yankee Doodle Dandy,Give My Regards to Broadway, Mary’s aGrand Old Name, Harrigan, Over There, and You’re A Grand Old Flag (anenormous flag, sewn by parentvolunteer Laura Johnson, served as thebackdrop to this patriotic number).Besides the extravaganza of dancenumbers, the small vaudeville acts also

tickled the funny bones of theaudiences.

In the tradition of Cohan, it isappropriate to thank the Musicalproducers, directors, stage crew, andrunners, as well as the parentvolunteers, High School students, andcommunity members who pooled theirresources for the many committees.(Extra special thanks go to JennFerremi for styling the Gibson Girlsup-dos on the female leads four nightsin a row!) Such creative energy andhard work behind the scenes, combinedwith the remarkable center stageperformers, made “the whole stageshine!” Congratulations!

It’s All in the Mix At Cherry Avenue

Did you know that studentswho are mentored have a higherrate of academic success and aremore connected to school?

That is why the elementaryschool mentoring programs, facilitated by the social workersat Cherry, Lincoln, and Sunrise, have been set up at eachbuilding. Dedicated teachers

and staff members volunteertheir time to meet withselected students once a weekto build special friendships.

After holding a kickoffbreakfast to celebrate the newmentoring year, this years’groups of students and staffmembers have been enjoyingtheir time to share.

At Cherry Avenue, Mrs. JessicaO’Rourke’s Second-grade students hadall the ingredients at their fingertips: ablend of math, with a touch ofscience, and a dash of fun. Voila! Youhave students learning to bake.

Thanks to the bakingtalents of parent volunteerMrs. Tina Philbin whoassisted Mrs. O’Rourke inthe project, the childrenmade German StollenChristmas bread (with orwithout dry fruit and citruspeel according toindividual taste) and Challah Bread.

They enjoyed measuring 2 tsp. ofsugar and 4 cups of flour, using athermometer to ensure the watertemperature stayed between 105 and115 degrees Fahrenheit, mixing the dryingredients with wet, and watching thegourmet mixer transform theingredients into dough. Each student

kneaded and molded their own ball ofdough into whatever shape theywanted. After, Mrs. Philbin took theirhandiwork home to bake and returnedthe next day with the students’ holidaybreads, which they took home to sharewith their families. Student ChloeGaconiere remarked, “It was really fun!The dough felt squishy like pizza dough.”

Only 192 Fifth graders earned perfect scores in the

entire country at this year’s WordMasters Challenge—a

national language arts competition entered by over

225,000 students annually.

Two of them were from Lincoln Avenue. Fifth

graders Jennifer Lembeck and Tejas Patel earned

perfect scores in the year’s WordMasters Challenge.

During the difficult Blue Division, the first of three

separate meets in the Challenge, Jennifer and Tejas earned

highest honors, while other Lincoln Avenue Fifth-grade

students—Dara Hofman, Liam Hofmeister, Kara Finnen,

Anerie Kinariwalla,Tristan Ramirez, and Jamie Sheraton—

also received outstanding results in the meet.To Jennifer

and Tejas, the Wordmaster students, and Lincoln Avenue

teacher Carol Guinaw (their WordMaster coach who

prepares them for the challenges)—congratulations on

your remarkable efforts.
