Meetings are at the Double Tree Hotel at 7 AM, Friday Mornings
J Curious Issue No. 4 - July 29
Today’s meeting was a fine blend of humor and virtue.
Humor came first. Did you know that Bill McIntyre invented the Internet, and DeWana Ljung is a man? By club acclamation, these two little known facts were found to be true. The club’s third fact of the day: J. R. Corcoran would like to be dating John Koogle. A bridge spanning the East River in NYC is also for sale. Mercifully, virtue followed
in the form of our speaker, Ken Cross, the executor director of Sacramento’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity. After West Point, a military career, and a finance career, Ken has led our local Habitat chapter for the last eight years. We (and it is we, given Sacramento’s generosity with its time and money) have built and then sold over eighty homes

locally and one hundred fifty homes abroad. Each family must pay in full for their home, and must pay for the entirety of the land and construction costs with a fixed interest, thirty-year loan. Given the family’s modest financial circumstances, the purchase is feasible because the down payment is met by the family’s five hundred hours of volunteer labor, and the thirty year loan is at zero
interest. Habitat both oversees the construction, and then carries the loan (i.e., it does not sell the paper). Impressively, not one family has defaulted in the local chapter’s twenty-five year history. Now there is virtue, unblemished by lowbrow humor.
And to all a good night.

2nd Annual District Golf by Clarence Parkins District Foundation Chair, 2009-2012
Last year Rotary District 5180 and Save Mart Supermarkets teamed up to sponsor a golf tournament to raise funds to renovate the Camp Fire Girls Camp Site at River Bend Park. This campsite was used for years for many youth organizations in our area to expose our youth to a safe enviorament to experience outdoor camping. However, due to budget restraints over the last ten years the camp has been allowed to go to disrepair, and as a result is no longer useable to our youth. Last year we raised $57,000 with our first tournament held in October at Rancho Murrieta Country Club. Along with the tournament we had a tournament within the tournament we named
the Governor's Cup for a competition between the clubs in our district. We had ten clubs enter the Governor's Cup last year with North Sacramento Rotary winning the Governor's Cup. They will be back to defend the Cup this year. We hope to have at least twenty clubs competing to win the Cup this year, and all the bragging rights that go with it. This year’s tournament will again be held at the Rancho Murrieta Country Club on September 23, 2011. In addition to players from each club, and a entry in the Governor’s Cup, we would like for each club to become

a tournament sponsor and purchase a tee sign so your club will be recognized during the tournament. Attached is a tournament entry form and a tournament sponsor form. The forms will also be on the district website www.rotary5180.org. Also, a member of the district golf committee would like to visit your club, show a short video about the park project, and promote the tournament to your members. We do not want to be your program for the day, but just make a short announcement during your meeting. We will phone you prior to our visit to get your okay to visit. We would also appreciate publicity for the tournament in your club newsletter each week prior to the tournament. This tournament represents a
major effort by our district and district clubs to make a real difference in our community
by renovating this campsite for our youth. As a part of our
commitment we plan to have a number of workdays at the park so your members can
participate, and see first hand this project as it develops. In Save Mart Supermarkets we have an outstanding partner who will be with us for the
completion of this project. We know we can count on each of you to support this important
Rotary project. If I can answer any questions, please let me know. You can contact me by
email at [email protected].
RETIRED HUSBAND (I didn't know they
were watching!) After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Target. Unfortunately, like most men, I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women – she loves to browse.
Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter from the local Target: Dear Mrs. Harris,
Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion in our Store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to ban both of you from the store.
Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Harris, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras: 1. June 15: He took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people's carts when they weren't looking. 2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals. 3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women's restroom. 4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice,
'Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away'. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor. That in turn resulted with a union
grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money. 5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on Layaway. 6. August 14: Moved a 'CAUTION - WET FLOOR' sign to a carpeted area. 7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he'd invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets

from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged. 8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, 'Why can't you people just leave me alone?' EMTs were called. 9. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose. 10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were. 11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the 'Mission Impossible' theme. 12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his 'Madonna look' by using different sizes of funnels. 13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled 'PICK ME! PICK ME!' 14. October 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed 'OH NO! IT'S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!'
And last, but not least: 15. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, then yelled very loudly, 'Hey! There's no toilet paper in here.' One of the clerks passed out.
