St James=s Palace S. cont. from p1

Magician (Ire)=s absence seemed to pave the way forstablemate and J “TDN Rising Star” J Mars (Ire)(Galileo {Ire}) to join in the game of musical horses asfar as this race is concerned. Sixth in the Guineas andthe Derby and particularly eye-catching in the latterrace, he remains a fascinating prospect. AMagiciantravels very strongly and keeps on going,@ said trainerAidan O=Brien. AHe has a lot of speed and everybodysaw at the Curragh how strongly he traveled. We thinkMars could be in the mold of Rip Van Winkle--in hiswork, his cruising speed was up around 40 mph, whichis very fast, so there=s a chance he might be bettercoming back to a mile. His first run on grass was in theGuineas and it was a very respectable run, so it wasprobably a big task that we set him. We learnt a lotabout him at Epsom and he=ll be ridden handier over amile. Racing will help him relax and mature.@ Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani=s Toronado (Ire)(High Chaparral {Ire}) was rerouted to this event afterhis disappointment in the Newmarket Classic ledconnections to skip a tilt at the Derby. The way hedisposed of the proven pattern-race performerDundonnell (First Defence) in the G3 Craven S. atNewmarket Apr. 18 sticks in the memory and trainerRichard Hannon is hoping for a revival of fortunes fittedwith a spoon bit. AWe know we did not see the realToronado in the Guineas, but everything he has done athome since he resumed exercise has convinced us thatwe still have the real deal,@ Hannon commented. AWebelieve that he suffered a displaced palate as soon ashe left the stalls at Newmarket, so he did remarkablywell to finish fourth. He was legless at the end and inanother 100 yards would have trailed in last. However,we have switched him from Everleigh to Herridge andalso changed his tack, and both seem to have had apositive effect. He is much more relaxed and isbreathing properly again, and, whereas we could havegone for the tongue-tie, a lot of horses do not find thatcomfortable, so we went for the spoon-bit, which wehave used on several of our horses in the past and heseems very happy in it. He worked super in his finalgallop, and, while we don=t underestimate either DawnApproach or Magician, we are just focusing on ensuringthat our horse is back to his best and able to run to hisfull potential.@ Jockey Richard Hughes added, AI haven=tlost faith in him. We know he wasn=t at his best in theGuineas, yet he was still there at the two pole on thebit and not many horses would have done that with thefractions they were doing. Something went amiss andhe wasn=t getting much air. He=s very talented, but hehas to prove himself now. I know what he is, but wehave to get everyone else to see how good he is.@

Queen Anne S. cont. from p1

A[Animal Kingdom] is very laid-back and that hasshown since he=s been over here--he=s adjusted andfitted in very well,@ explained Motion. AHe is anextraordinary animal and the grass is probably hispreferred surface. I=m not sure what his best distanceis, but the mile at Ascot is more comparable to a mileand a furlong, which is what he would be running overin the States. He has a tremendous turn of foot andgreat speed that he can use at any time. We=re notducking anybody and it=s admirable that [owners] John[Messara] and Barry [Irwin] want to do this. It=s been agreat experience and for me it=s a relief that all his workis now behind him.@ Second in the betting, but perhaps only there due toconnections, is Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, DerrickSmith and Joseph Allen=s Declaration of War (WarFront). His form lacks the substance of many of hisopponents in this line-up. He was brought alongsteadily by Aidan O=Brien, but flopped when throwninto the deep end in the May 18 G1 Lockinge S., neverlooking likely to justify a huge gamble into 5-4favoritism. The fact that the G3 Diamond S. and Listed HeritageS. winner was backed to that extent suggests that theread-outs at Ballydoyle were raising eyebrows and hisconditioner retains the faith. AWe probably learnt a lotabout him at Newbury, as what threw us was that hewon his group race over a mile and a quarter and heshowed a lot more speed than we thought,@ O=Briensaid. AMaybe we did the wrong thing with him andmaybe I didn=t have him fit enough, so we=ve changed alot of things and we still think he=s an exciting horse. We need to find out what his correct trip is now, ashe=s a powerhouse and an unbelievable specimen andhe might even have to go back shorter the way he=straining.@ Teruya Yoshida=s G1 Prix Marcel Boussac andRothschild winner Elusive Kate (Elusive Quality) couldprovide the pace, as she responds to aggressive tactics.Third when last seen in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. inOctober, she faces a tough task attempting to beat thecolts first time up.Cont. p5

ALike everyone else, I have plenty of respect forAnimal Kingdom, but I=m sure that he=s plenty shortenough and is there to be taken on and I feel thatElusive Kate is ideal for the job,@ jockey William Buicksaid. AShe couldn=t have done any more at home thanshe has and the boss, John Gosden, knows her insideout. A straight mile and nice ground is just what shewants and I=m sure that the males up against her willknow she=s about come the finish.@ Adding to the international flavour is Qatar Racing=sTrade Storm (GB) (Trade Fair {GB}), who is aprogressive type finding his full strength at present.Successful in Meydan=s G2 Zabeel Mile Mar. 2, he wasbeaten less than three lengths when fourth in the G1Dubai Duty Free on World Cup night four weeks later. AI=m really happy with him, he=s in good health andhe=s showing all the right signs,@ trainer David Simcockcommented. AHe trained very well in Dubai, where thewhole routine suited him. SHEA’S DAY? If America can pull off a landmark victory in theopener, it could be South Africa=s turn just over half anhour later in the G1 King=s Stand S. at Royal Ascot, with Shea Shea (SAf) (National Emblem {SAf}) out toreward the pioneering spirit of his trainer Mike de Kock. While de Kock=s focus on the international stage tendsto center around Dubai, he has made a significantimpact in Hong Kong and the U.S., and even sentAsiatic Boy (Arg) (Not For Sale {Arg}) to be fourth inthe 2007 G1 Sussex S. Shea Shea represents his bestchance of breaking through at Royal Ascot, havingbroken Meydan=s track record twice, most recently inthe G1 Al Quoz Sprint on Dubai World Cup night, whichcompounded the impression he created when coveringthe five furlongs of Turffontein in :56.5 in last April=sG1 Computaform Sprint.

AIt=s not a pipe-dream--he has run some very quicktimes,@ de Kock said. AI believe he=s the real deal and hehas produced world-class form. It is neverstraightforward with all the traveling. It is difficult forus to compete because of quarantine regulations--it isnot a level playing field regarding South Africanparticipation. Winning would not just be important tous, but it would help the South African horseinternationally. There is the weight and the pressure ofa nation on him. We will be doing our best and he willbe doing his best--if it doesn=t happen, it doesn=thappen. He=s maintained his coat, which is nice as it=sbeen a bit chilly here and he should be cycling into awinter state being a Southern Hemisphere horse. Ascotwill be different to what he=s used to, but he has beento the July Course to work and up the Long Hill gallop,so he has had a good go at undulations. I think theuphill finish at Ascot might suit him because he likes toget going late.@ Unlike South Africa, Australia has enjoyed multiplesuccesses at this meeting in recent times and four havecome in this contest in the last 10 years. Danny O=Brienhas shipped in the Mar. 9 G1 Newmarket H. winnerShamexpress (NZ) (O=Reilly {NZ}) and he has beenhappy with how the youngster has handled the ordealso far.

AHe took the trip really well, which is obviously thebig thing,@ O=Brien explained. AWe had a barrier trial atFlemington and the horse who finished second then,Linton, went on to win a Group 1 sprint, the StradbrokeH., so Shamexpress=s form leaving Australia was verygood. He is a horse I have always had a good opinionof, but it was his win in the Newmarket H. whichsealed the trip to Royal Ascot. I think Shamexpress iscoming here at the right time of his career--he isnowhere near as seasoned as some of the Australianhorses who have run at Royal Ascot such as TakeoverTarget and Black Caviar, because he is only a3-year-old. This horse is beautifully actioned and I don=tthink the track will be a problem. It would be fantasticto win at Royal Ascot. We were second with StarWitness and it is a great week of racing. Being thatclose and not winning has left me with the desire tocome back here and succeed.@ Last year=s G1 Prix Morny, G1 Middle Park S. and G2 Norfolk S. scorer Reckless Abandon (GB) (ExchangeRate) lost his unbeaten record on his sophomore bowwhen third behind the past G1 Golden Jubilee S. winnerKingsgate Native (Ire) (Mujadil) and Swiss Spirit (GB)(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in the G2 Temple S. at HaydockMay 25, but trainer Clive Cox can only see positives inthat performance. AWe=ve got that run under our belt now, which I thinkis important, especially from a sprinter=s point of view,@Cox told PA Sport.

Cox continued, AFrom a sprinting mentality, morethan physically, it does them the world of good. I=mreally pleased that=s put him on his game. From the endof June and July onwards, 3-year-olds get a bit of helpwith weight-for-age from their elders, but there aren=tthat many opportunities early in the year. For thatreason, the Temple was the logical place to go and heacquitted himself really well.@

King=s Stand cont.

Swiss Spirit, who beat Kingsgate Native in the G3 Dubai International Airport World Trophy over thistrip at Newbury in September when under the care ofDavid Elsworth, looked unlucky not to confirm thatform in the Temple on his second start for the JohnGosden stable and jockey William Buick is hoping hecan make his presence felt. AWith due deference toShea Shea and Shamexpress, I think there might be alittle lack of depth to the King=s Stand S. and I amfancying a big run,@ Buick said. AThis is a progressivehorse and [he] stepped up considerably last time overfive at Haydock. I have no doubt in my mind that wewould have won but for being quite badly bumped atthe start and lost valuable momentum. The only factorthat could be better is the draw [in 17], because I=d liketo have been nearer to where I think the pace might be,but I think I have the right horse to overcome that.@

WORK IN PROGRESS So far, Stubbs (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) has moreor less trod down the Dawn Approach path and DerrickSmith, Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor=s precociouscolt bids to continue the progression along thatparticular line in today=s G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot.

Like last year=s hero,Stubbs debuted in theopening Curraghjuvenile maiden of theseason Mar. 24 and, although he did notemulate hispredecessor=s success inthat race, two startslater he was followinghis example by winningthe Listed RochestownS. at Naas June 3. He is

joined by Peeping Fawn=s son Sir John Hawkins(Henrythenavigator) and War Command (War Front) andthat pair are inter-linked on form. Sir John Hawkinsbeat the Bolger runner Intensified (Ire) (Intense Focus)in a six-furlong Curragh maiden May 26 before WarCommand denied the same rival over an extra panel atLeopardstown June 7. AStubbs is out of an Oakswinner, but the pace is probably coming from DanehillDancer and he=s doing everything right,@ Aidan O=Briencommented. AFirst time, he got tired in bad ground andhas won very nicely since. We are going to learn a lotabout him. Sir John Hawkins won nicely at The Curraghwhere he was just ready to run.@ Richard Hannon hasput his own stamp on this race in recent times, withCanford Cliffs (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}) and Strong Suit (Rahy)impressive winners in 2009 and 2010, respectively. This time, he saddles three smart prospects inMohamed Saeed Al Shahi=s June 1 Listed Woodcote S.scorer Thunder Strike (Sakhee=s Secret {GB}), SheikhHamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum=s May 31 Goodwoodmaiden scorer Wahaab (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and JulieWood=s Championship (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}),with Richard Hughes favoring the latter.

He looked an exciting colt in the making whenovercoming traffic problems to score on debut in thesame six-furlong Newbury maiden won by the yard=saforementioned Coventry winners May 17. AHughesiemade a late switch in the Coventry,@ Hannon explained.AHe was going to ride Thunder Strike, but he was soimpressed when he gave Championship his finalblow-out at Everleigh last Wednesday that he hasjumped ship. Championship has done so well physicallysince Newbury and now looks a different horse. Hewon that debut stylishly enough, but he has definitelyimproved and, while we aren=t going there with theconfidence we had in Canford Cliffs and Strong Suit,we do like our fellow. However, don=t rule out ThunderStrike. He is a colt with plenty of speed and we weren=tsure that he would stay the six furlongs in theWoodcote S. at Epsom, but he got the trip well and heis clearly a decent tool. So too, is Wahaab, who madean impressive winning debut at Goodwood the sameday. Build up to Animal Kingdom=s appearance tomorrowin the opening race of the 2013 Royal Ascot meetinghas been remarkable to watch unfold, as the racecoursehas generated an unbelievable amount of interest in thechallenge undertaken by our horse. The media has been all over our horse and hisunusual story, everybody jumping on the circumstanceof AK being the first Kentucky Derby winner since1935 hero Omaha to race at Royal Ascot. If you don=tbelieve me, Google it. The Depression Era Derby herohas replaced Omaha Steaks as the most searched itemin all of Nebraska! The British are nothing if not worldly--after all, theytried to run the world for a long, long time. So theyknow a sporting challenge worthy of the name whenthey see one. The international aspect of the various connectionshas really intrigued them, what with a homegrownEnglish lad as the trainer, a legendary Puerto Rican asthe jockey, a Kentucky horseman as the breeder, anAustralian stud master as the majority owner and theruler of Dubai as a racing and breeding partner. Toss in the international nature of a Brazilian sire anda German dam and the global profile is complete. I spent the first part of the day doing the mundane, making sure I had enough clean clothes to last the restof the week and picking up my Morning Suit from MossBrothers on Regent Street (Ano, I don=t want to try it onagain to make sure it fits!@). Joe Drape and I were the only diners at an Indianrestaurant down the block from the Corus Hotel, wherelast summer my wife Kathleen and I stayed when weattended the track and field portion of the OlympicGames. This evening, Asprey=s (which makes trophies forsuch diverse and iconic sporting events as Wimbletonand the Dubai World Cup) hosted many Ascotconnections at a cocktail party at their store on BondStreet, right across the street from Ralph Lauren=s shopwhere polo shirts for men can be had at a mere 50%more than they cost in Manhattan. People keep asking me if I am nervous, or if I amgetting excited yet, and what does it feel like? I usually only get nervous when I am anxious.

Anxiety is fear of the unknown. I experience it when Ido not have a good feeling about how a horse will do.God knows that Animal Kingdom is facing plenty ofunknowns tomorrow: running for the first time in astraight course, racing on an undulating course for thefirst time, racing in England for the first time anddropping from 10 furlongs on a Tapeta track to turf, onwhich he will try to win his first race at a distance asshort as a mile. I was apprehensive about the straight course beforearriving in England, but I must tell you that afterwatching him work twice on an uphill straight, I ambuoyed with confidence and I don=t expect to benervous tomorrow. What I do think will happen, is about a minute or twobefore the race kicks off, I will experience a tiny electricshock beneath my tongue that has occurred countlesstimes, beginning when I used to participate in track inhigh school. It is the anticipation of competition. Competition is why we brought Animal Kingdom toAscot.

I=ve owned my top hat for the past 20 years or so,but recently, I've noticed that it's getting smaller on myhead. (Friends tell me it's the other way around, andthat my head is getting bigger, but I don't see how thisis possible.) It'sgrey, and for thepast severalyears, ShawnDrysdale hasbeen teasing methat I really needa black hat. Theydon't make themany more, however, sothey=re vintage...and they=reexpensive. IGoogled top hatsin London before I headed over for Ascot, and came upwith Hetherington Hats in Chelsea. I called the owner, and he asked me my hat size. I said 7 1/2 to 7 5/8ths.AOh, no,@ was the reply. AWhat's wrong?@ I said. AThebig ones are hard to find,@ said, Aand they=re expensive.@AWhat's expensive?@ I asked. AAround 3,500,@ he said.Pounds, of course. Ouch. I called Shawn, and she gaveme the number of the guy where Neil gets his hats. Italked to my friend Tessa, and she said she had a guy,but it wasn't a store; it was in the basement of ahouse.@

AI called my friend Louise and asked where Charliegets his hats. She called me back, said it was byappointment only, but that Charlie talked to the guyand I had an appointment at 11 a.m. the next day. I didn't have the name of the place, but gave the driverthe address, and he dropped me off at a house inChelsea. I wondered if it was the right address, but Iwas directed down the stairs to find that HetheringtonHats, Tessa's friend, Neil's guy and Charlie's placewere all one in the same. There were hats everywhere. The proprietor, MartinEllis Jones, agreed with Shawn; it had to be black. Hestarted by putting my head into a machine thatreminded me of one of those children's toys where youpress your hand into hundreds of thin pegs and see theshape on the other side. This produced a measurementwhich went into another machine, which wascalculated by another machine, and in the end, heproduced a hat which he said was the one. I put iton...and it was pure heaven on my head. It was quicklyapparent to me that no other hat would do. I asked theprice, he told me, and I swallowed hard and agreed topay it. (If my wife is reading this, I swear it was not the3,500 pounds listed earlier.) In a bit of a surreal moment, he then took me on abrief tour of the neighborhood, and had me look intothe window of a nearby home, where Andy Warhol'sfamous portrait series of Chairman Mao hung on thewall. (I looked it up, and Sotheby's sold it for$722,500. I swear, honey, my hat was less.) Back inthe shop, Jones hunted for his credit card machine, couldn't find it, and just told me I could wire him themoney when I got back home. He also added that hehad a specialcase for myhat, but hadto locate thatas well, andthat he wouldengrave itwith myinitials and Ishould comeback Thursdayand get it. Hecalled meMonday, threedays early, and told me it was ready. I brought my sonBrad with me, as he would need a hat for Ascot thenext day. Jones told him he'd need a black hat as well,if he planned to stand in the winner's circle, but Bradwasn't sure he wanted to invest in a hat, and said thismight be more of a one-time thing. Jones told him hecould borrow one, priced at 6,000 pounds, for nocharge. I've never had the experience of agreeing to aprice and then having the sweeteners added in...but Ifeel as if had I stuck around long enough, I would havegone home with the Warhol as well somehow. Sufficeto say, if you're ever coming to Ascot, Martin EllisJones is your man, and this is the place to get your hat.

She appears onstage with Seth Rudetsky, a popular American host of adaily Broadway show on Sirius/XM Radio. Rudetskyinterviews LuPone and accompanies her on the piano, having her sing songs that come up in conversation--some of which she has sung on Broadway, and otherswhich she literally didn't know the words to. When an unbeaten filly slices two seconds off therace record in winning a Classic, you have to think thatshe could develop into racing royalty. That, of course,is exactly what the unexposed Treve did in the Prix deDiane two days ago, and a glance at her female linequickly establishes that she has every right to developinto a queen of the turf. Treve=s fourth dam Trillioncontested the Prix de Diane some 36 years earlier. LikeTreve, Trillion arrived at the Chantilly classic unbeatenin two starts and she too ran really well, rallying sobravely that she failed by only a head to pass thefaltering Madelia.

Soundness--or the lack of it--quickly proved Madelia=sundoing, but Trillion had absolutely no problems in thatarea. A daughter of Hail To Reason, she inherited plentyof size from this champion sire, to the extent thatTimeform described her as Aa big, strapping mare.@ Shealso inherited plenty of the toughness that had allowedHail To Reason to make 18 starts as a juvenile. By thetime Trillion was retired at the end of her 5-year-oldcampaign, she had raced 32 times. Although her lack ofa turn of foot made her vulnerable at the highest level, she numbered the G1 Prix Ganay among her ninevictories and she was runner-up in no fewer than 10 other Group 1 races, once finishing a two-lengthsecond of 18 behind Alleged in the Arc. Bearing in mind that Trillion earned a Timeform ratingof 129, her chances of producing something betterthan herself looked somewhat slim, yet that is exactlywhat she achieved with her second foal, Triptych. Thisdaughter of Riverman raced 38 times from two to six, mainly at Group 1 level and often against males, whomshe first defeated in the Irish 2000 Guineas. Triptych was seen at her very best as a 5-year-old,when her victories included the Prix Ganay, CoronationCup, the Matchmaker International at York and theChampion S. at both Phoenix Park and Newmarket.Timeform rated her 133 that year, which put heramongst the greatest distaffers of all time. cont. p13

Insights cont.

Tragically, Triptych was killed in 1989, before shehad produced a foal, and Trillion was also none toofortunate, as she died at 13, after producing only fourfoals. Fortunately, all four of Trillion=s foals were filliesand the three which survived--Trevilla, Barger and TripleCouronne--all have at least one Group 1-winningdescendant. Barger--herself a winner of the G3 Prix Vanteaux--isthe second dam of Tawqeet, winner of the CaulfieldCup, while Triple Couronne is the second dam ofAmorama, twice a Grade I winner on turf at Del Mar. These two were by Riverman, which made them sistersto Triptych, but Trillion=s first foal, Trevilla, was byLyphard. Trevilla, born in 1981, began her broodmare careerwith a visit to Vaguely Noble. The resultant filly, SineLabe, made her mark by producing Tamarisk, a first-ratesprinter who sadly proved to be largely infertile. But thesuccesses of Triptych and Barger soon had Trevillaheading not to Vaguely Noble, but to Riverman, anotherof Gainesway=s European stars. Her first two visits actas a reminder that, if a breeder has faith in a particularmating, he or she should be prepared to persevere.Trevilla=s first Riverman filly, Trevillari, failed to fulfil thepromise she showed at two and was still without a winafter 13 starts spread over three seasons. However,Trevilla=s second daughter by Riverman was Treble, winner of the G1 Prix Saint-Alary. Trevillari made up for her failings on the track byproducing nine winners. The best of them was herAnabaa colt Tsigane, who was once beaten less thantwo lengths when third in the GI Shoemaker Mile S. Itis Tsigane=s sister Trevise--a sprint winner on her2-year-old debut--who is now the dam of the excitingTreve. Trevise=s Hernando colt Trois Rois also scored atstakes level, over a mile and a quarter. Trevise=s nexttwo foals are Trophee, a 2-year-old colt by Mr. Sidney, and a yearling colt by Fuisse. Mr Sidney and Fuisse aretwo of the stallions at the Head family=s Haras duQuesnay, which also became the home this year ofTreve=s sire Motivator, who had previously been basedat the Royal Studs in England.

It is impossible to review the bottom half of Treve=spedigree without highlighting the involvement of theHead family in several generations of her pedigree.Lyphard, the sire of third dam Trevilla, and Riverman, sire of second dam Trevillari, were both trained by AlecHead, while Treve=s broodmare sire Anabaa developedinto the champion sprinter of 1996 in the care ofCriquette Head, who trained him for her mother.Criquette also trained Anabaa=s very speedy damBalbonella, who in turn was by Gay Mecene, anotheralumnus of the Alec Head yard. Now MmeHead-Maarek is training Treve for Haras du Quesnay. Incidentally, Treve=s dam Trevise is inbred 4x2 toRiverman (and 3x4 to Northern Dancer). Riverman alsoappears twice (this time 4x3) in the pedigree of anotherof the Heads= good broodmares, Funny Feerie, dam ofthe Grade I winners Full of Gold and Fuisse. That meansthat Trevise=s Fuisse colt has four lines of Riverman. Before leaving the topic of Treve=s female line, Ishould point out that Trillion was a sister to HailMaggie, as well as being a half-sister to Doff TheDerby, all three being daughters of Margarethen. HailMaggie produced the Grade I-winner Sabona and alsoranked as the third dam of Landseer, winner of theFrench 2000 Guineas and Keeneland Turf Mile.Landseer=s second dam Flood was a sister-in-blood toTriptych. Doff The Derby=s contribution to the familyfortunes was even more considerable, as herdescendants include the Derby and Irish Derby winnerGenerous, the dual Classic winner Imagine and thehigh-class French filly Moonlight Cloud. The Prix de Diane also paid tribute to themuch-missed Montjeu, as Treve is by his son Motivatorand the runner-up, the inexperienced Chicquita, is byMontjeu himself. Despite siring fillies of the calibre ofMontare, Miss Keller and Sarah Lynx, Montjeu wasrightly considered a better sire of colts. Oddly, thereverse seems to be happening with Motivator. Inaddition to Treve, he has been very ably represented bytwo other French daughters. Ridasiyna provided himwith his first Group 1 success last October, when sheproved much too good for those fine fillies Izzi Top andGiofra in the Prix de l=Opera. More recently, hisdaughter Ferevia has won the G3 Prix Penelope beforefinishing an excellent third in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary. Treve is his eighth group winner from his first fourcrops and six of those eight are fillies. Add in his listedwinners and the imbalance between the sexescontinues, with 10 fillies, as opposed to two colts andthree geldings. I guess that owner-breeders won=tobject to that sort of record. The picture could change a little with help from hisson Sky Hunter, who suffered the first defeat of hiscareer when an encouraging third to Intello in the Prixdu Jockey-Club. The emergence of Treve, Sky Hunter and Fereviafrom the 82 foals in Motivator=s fourth crop make it allthe more unfortunate that the 2005 Derby winner hassuffered a catalogue of problems which have begun torestrict his opportunities.cont. p14

He went lame in his off-hind while being prepared forthe Breeders= Cup Turf and the problems continuedwhen his first season at the Royal Studs was broughtto a premature halt after he had slipped in his paddock.Consequently he was unable to cover all of the maresbooked to him and his first crop totalled 63 foals, which put him at a numerical disadvantage. He had nosuch problems in the next two seasons, siring 103 foalsin both his second and third crops. Motivator=s next problem came in the autumn of2009, when he suffered a tendon injury to his left-hindwhich prevented him covering at all in 2010.Consequently he has no 2-year-olds this year. His injurynecessitated a cautious approach to the 2011 season, when he is credited with covering 52 mares for 35foals. He is listed as having covered only 45 mares in2012 in his last season in England, even though his feewas down to only ,5,000. I believe that the 2013 season wasn=t entirelywithout its problems, but the French exploits of Treve,Ridasiyna, Ferevia and Sky Hunter suggest strongly thatMotivator is now in the right place and very muchworthy of perseverance.

BARGAINING WITH THE DEVIL

Near fatal incident reminds us of a formula that canrevitalize racingby Mark Cramer On June 11, an "incident" unheard of in the annals ofThoroughbred racing history can indirectly serve as away to introduce a measure that could revitalize horseracing. It happened in what is known in France as "TheEvent": the daily horserace-lottery called the Quint‚(pronounced cantay). First watch what happened and then we can talkabout the concept I am proposing for American racing. No need to understand the French of the race callers.Just look at the images. If you listen carefully you willhear a siren in the background as the horses round theturn. The siren was supposed to be an announcementto the jockeys to STOP THE RACE. But they could nothear it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXffK1Wek4M The driver of the tractor that should have pulled thestarting gate off the track had difficulty with thecomputer panel (it was a brand new tractor), and wasnot able to start up the vehicle. The starting gate remained on the track and this wasa two-turn event! With the gate located just after the turn, the riderscould not see it until they were already upon it. No onewas right on the track to warn them that a fatalcollision could be imminent.

Just before it was too late, one rider, AdrienFouassier, heard the siren and shouted to the otherjockeys. Certainly Fouassier saved them all from apile-up that would have made Hollywood chase scenespale in comparison. Jockey Alain Coutil told the press that they were alllucky. "If the turf had been less yielding and the pacefaster, we never would have been able to stop ontime." So what does this have to do with an idea forrevitalizing racing in the USA? First of all, this race wasbeing carried live, not only on the cable racing stationEquidia, but also on public television. The reason for thelive broadcast? It was the Quint‚ race of the day, mainly an off-track wager that brings extra handle on adaily basis from players who rarely if ever go to aracetrack. Even though the Nantes race course is a smallermarket, there were i9 million (about Z13 million) in theQuint‚ betting pool that day. Needless to say, allwagers were refunded to the players. To understand the phenomenon, consider that theParis-Turf publishes a centerfold just for this Quint‚race, with vastly expanded past performances thatinclude remarkably candid trainer commentaries, suchas, "my horse is not cranked up for this one, and has abetter race coming up in two weeks" or "disregard thelast race, the mare was in heat." Since the Quint‚ functions as a national lottery (youneed to pick the first five finishers in order), racingauthorities demand transparency in the pastperformances. Thanks to the Quint‚ alone, theParis-Turf pps are found at virtually every newsstand, where you will also find a half dozen other pastperformance publications that specialize in the Quint‚. Back in the USA, finding a Daily Racing Form hasbecome more challenging than finding Waldo. In American racing, the bargain with the devil hasproduced racinos, where the slot machine area iscompletely isolated from the racing itself. There is nocrossover between the mindless gambling at the slotroom that feeds the handle, and the mindful gamblingengaged in by horseplayer handicappers a few yardsaway. There is no relationship between slot machinesand horse betting. With the same logic, race trackscould have houses of prostitution on the premises.

Cont. from p14

On the other hand, the Quint‚ has created asignificant crossover. It's still a lottery wager but allowsfor the intervention of thoughtful handicapping. I do notplay the Quint. Even if it were a five-horse field, therewould be 120 different possible combinations forpicking the first five finishers in order. With fields ofbetween 14 and 20 horses, the odds against pickingthe winning combination are breathtaking. Winningcombinations often pay more than i200,000, butconsolation payoffs are so feeble that there is no wayto scratch out a sustainable bet over the long run. Intelligent handicapping can help you come closefrom time to time, and that will seduce players tocontinue trying. As Yankee announcer Mel Allen usedto say: Aso near and yet so far!@ One of my racing friends and betting partners, Jean,is a smart handicapper who does well enough in otherbetting pools. By pooling our resources and combiningour handicapping, Jean and I have been running a profitfor the past year and a half in another wager called thePick 5, where you do not need the five finishers inorder. Strangely, he continues to play the Quint, at a loss, even with occasional good payoffs for picking the topfour finishers in any order. I ask him why he persists inplaying the Quint‚ knowing that he does better in otherwagers. "It's just part of my culture,@ he says. The Quint‚ race is a cultural phenomenon that bridgesthe gap between lottery bettors and horseplayers. Likethe slots at racetracks, it's still a bargain with the devil, but in the end, the Quint‚ will certainly be moresustainable for the industry, while slot machines at racetracks will eventually and inevitably diminish as casinosarise at non-racetrack venues. A national racing lottery wager would be good for theUSA. But it won't work unless it brings new people intoreading past performances, some of whom willeventually cross over into becoming race goers andrace players. You'd have a better chance to get such abet on national TV if it were based on a single race, rather than a pick-4 variety: fewer PPs to study andeasier to show on national TV. If they broadcast thelottery on TV, why couldn't they show a single horserace?

I once appeared on National Public Radio and wasgiven a chance to explain to lottery players that theywould do better to shift their money into a trifecta atthe races, because they could actually make aninformed choice based on the logic of the pastperformances. If racing industry leaders were to engagein a smart public relations campaign, we could certainlyconvince some of the more mindful lottery players thatthey would have a better chance with a horse race. The near fatal incident at the Nantes race coursereminds us of how many people had a stake in theQuint‚ "event" of the day. Many of them were folkswho would have otherwise bought a few lotterytickets. Followers of this type of daily event do notneed a Zenyatta or a Goldikova to play. The event is a mere handicap race, unless a majorstakes race like the Arc de Triomphe has at least 14starters. Anyone who hangs out at a French OTB (PMU) cansee that there has been a significant extension of Quint‚wagering into other races on the race cards of the day. Some bargains with the devil are better than others. To comment on this story, visit the TDN blog atwww.thetdn.com/blog.Mark Cramer is a writer and handicapper living in Paris.

OBS JUNE SALE BEGINS TODAY The OBS June Sale of Two-Year-Olds and Horses ofRacing Age will begin its first session at 10:30 thismorning. A total of 748 horses were catalogued with

hips 1-370 on offer today andhips 371-748 on offer tomorrow.AThe 2-year-old season has beenvery solid,@ said OBS PresidentTom Ventura. AWe=ve hadimpressive results in both of oursales and think there=s a goodturn-out for this sale as well. Wehave a very good group of horsesand there=s a variety of horses,so there are horses in differentprice ranges that really help thissale, and certainly helped theApril sale, in terms of getting abroad base of buyers. Dependingon their budget and their taste,

there=s usually a horse that fits their criteria.@ The highly successful OBS April Sale, in which newmarks for gross, average and median were set with thetopper--a colt by Bernardini out of Rooney=s Princess--hammered down to Brushwood Stable for $900,000,bodes well for the prospect of the June sale. The 2012rendition was one of the best in recent years with 181horses sold for a total of $5,273,800 with an averageof $29,137, up 40.7% from the 2011 sale, and medianof $15,000, up 53.8%. AThere=s been a gradual improvement in the quality ofhorses that are [in the June sale],@ explained Ventura.AThe consigners have confidence now that the buyerswill be here. Some horses are just given the time thatthey need and are targeted for this sale. The consignersfeel that they can bring a top-level horse and be able tosell it for good money.@ The two fastest furlong works of the under-tackshow belong to hip 258 and hip 338. The former is a 2-year-old Red Giant filly out of GSW Theresa=s Tizzy(Cee=s Tizzy) consigned by Eisaman Equine.

The half-sibling to GSP Got the Last Laugh (DistortedHumor) worked the distance in :9 4/5. Hip 338,consigned by SAB Sales, is a bay colt out of ElusiveQuality. He is the second foal out of unraced mareAgatha (Distorted Humor). He also covered a furlong in:9 4/5. The three fastest quarter-mile works were posted byhips 335, 377 and 461 who covered the distance in:20 3/5. Hip 335 is a filly by More Than Ready and byAfrican Skyline (Saint Ballado) consigned by Hoppel'sHorse & Cattle Co. Hip 377 is a Congrats filly out ofthe stakes placed Beauty for Ashes (City Place) andconsigned by Southern Chase Farm. Consigned by deMeric Sales, hip 461 is an Exclusive Quality colt out ofDash Home (Two Punch). AThe under-tack show was similar to last year,@Ventura said. AIt was a fair attendance. The one thingabout the under-tack shows that has changed over theyears is that we=re providing this instant information toour buyers in a variety of ways. We stream the under-tack show live and we get the videos edited and upprobably within an hour of the time that they breezed. Many of our buyers can=t dedicate eight or nine days, orin this case maybe a week, to be away from theiroperations, so they might have other people here doingsome of their homework for them, but they still haveaccess to the information they need before theyactually get here. So, we did see some new facesshowing up here today.@ To view the catalogue, videos and results visitwww.obssales.com.
