The event is dedicated to one of Rogers Park’s shining stars, the late Helen Doria, who as a Park District program director and later as the first executive director of Millennium Park was instrumental in getting the city to program free concerts in the neighborhoods and maintaining their growth and development. “Helen’s vision of the park was one that was inclusive of everybody — all cultures, all classes, everybody,” said Lauren Deutsch, executive director of the Jazz Institute of Chicago. CTA President and former head of the Park District Forrest Claypool, in comments to the Chicago Tribune, spoke of how Ms. Doria, who died in December, “developed a vast network of arts and cultural patrons throughout the city. They in turn helped her bring the arts to every corner of the city, whether it was Millennium Park or the smallest neighborhood venue.” JazzCity is a free concert series initiated in 1997 by the Jazz Institute in collaboration with the Chicago Park District, now in its 16th season of bringing people together from across the city to listen to Chicago’s top jazz musicians. JazzCity is sponsored by WDCB 90.9 FM and WHPK 88.5 FM Radio and supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information, visit www. Jazzinchicago.org or call 312-427-1676. JAZZ FANS HAVE PLENTY OF opportunities to enjoy their favorite performers from the comfort of their seats or lawn chairs, but how often do you get a chance to kick up your heels as a great big band band kicks it into second gear? Among college bands, perhaps none is better than the NIU Jazz Ensemble at giving you a feeling for the days when bandstand giants like Chicago’s own Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Jimmie Lunceford held forth, and jazz just wasn’t cutting it if it wasn’t getting you to cut some rug! Under the direction of Dr. Ronald Carter, the Northern Illinoisans have earned recognition at any number of major jazz festivals. A measure of their distinction is the number of jazz luminaries who have performed with them, including Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Wynton Marsalis, Quincy Jones, Jimmy Heath, James Moody, and Louis Bellson. Bellson once told legendary NIU Jazz Ensemble founder Ron Modell that “this band plays my arrangements better than my own band!” For the Big Dance, the DeKalb-based outfit will dig into its arrangements of big band legends including Count Basie, Woody Herman, and Glenn Miller, including songs that once featured Frank Sinatra – back when you would have had to put the bobby soxers in restraints to get them to sit still. those Chicago years,” confesses saxophonist Paul Winter as he recollects the few years he spent in Chicago. “[New York] was not nearly as nourishing and congenial as Chicago was. [It] does not offer the same sense of community.” Indeed, Winter’s time in Chicago was a defining moment since the city helped a directionless young man choose a professional path. A past that a recent anthology The Paul Winter Sextet - Count Me In 1962 & 1963 (Living Music) brings back in the spotlight.

In the late 1950s, Paul Winter decided to follow in his sister’s footsteps and to study at Northwestern University. His only plan was “to major in general confusion.” In his spare time, he spent as much time as possible on the South Side, most notably in the area around 63rd and Cottage Grove which was host to numerous jazz venues that have long disappeared (Strand Hotel, Tivoli Theatre, Cinderella Ballroom, Pershing Hotel, Kitty Kat, Basin Street). This is where he found the members of what would become his Sextet: trumpet player Dick Whitsell with whom he also played in the Lab Band at Northwestern; bass player Richard Evans who would become the group’s main arranger and could be seen playing with pianist Eddie Higgins at the London House; as well as baritone sax Les Rout, pianist Warren Bernhardt, and drummer Harold Jones.

“Jazz was underground then in the culture at large,” claims Winter. He performed once at the university’s radio station, WNUR, but does not remember it playing much jazz over the air. Moreover, he tried to start a jazz club on campus with the assistance of anthropology professor Alan Merriam. Unfortunately, the project was

killed in its infancy because of a disagreement over the definition of jazz.

This did not prevent the band from making some strides. Most notably, it caught the attention of John Hammond at Columbia Records at the Intercollegiate Jazz Festival. In December 1961, they entered the studio to make a record that would never see the light of the day in the US–four pieces now appear on the anthology. They were also selected by the State Department to tour South America in early 1962. This opportunity would open Winter’s ears to the sounds of Brazilian music before the landmark record by Charlie Byrd and Stan Getz was even

released. At this stage, the group was mainly drawing its inspiration from the bebop repertoire, using arrangements by Jimmy Heath and Norman Simmons, among others.

Ironically, it is this success that drove Winter away from Chicago. “[Upon our return in July] I gave New York a shot because it was the center of the business and where our record company was,” he says. “I never gave a thought about going back to Chicago.”

In the mid-1960s, he would return to Brazil to further his knowledge of the local music. Back in the US, he formed the Paul Winter Consort with future members of Oregon and thus played a major role in the development of the use of world music in a jazz setting. Since then, he has moved to Connecticut and brought attention to environmental issues through his music that has increasingly relied on the sounds of nature. This led to an artist-in-residence position at the progressive St. John the Divine cathedral in New York where he regularly performs his annual Summer and Winter Solstice Celebrations.

This January, JIC’s Noteworthy Jazz Ensemble traveled to Peoria, IL to perform and present at the Illinois Music Education Association Conference (IMEA). The band, which consists of Chicago Public School teachers, worked with music educators from throughout the state in a panel discussion format to discuss how the unique ‘teacher ensemble’ model can benefit both classroom and personal music practices. We are proud of our teacher’s jazz band, and their outstanding performance in Peoria!
