IZMIR AND BEYOND

Izmir is located in the Aegean province, which, of all the seven geographical regions of Turkey, enjoys the finest climate. In population it is the third city in Turkey. It is located in an area whose magnificent history has made it a tourist centre. It lies at the centre of the most important land, air and sea communication network in the ancient Aegean region.

THE LEGENDARY ORIGIN OF ITS NAME

The wife of Cinyras, King of Cyprus, foolishly claimed that her daughter, Smyrna, was more beautiful than Aphrodite herself. This so enraged the goddess that she made Smyrna fall in love with her own father and one night Smyrna's nurse having made the king drunk, she climbed into his bed. When he finally awoke from his drunken slumber, the king drew his sword and drove his daughter from the palace, pursuing her into the country side. Just as he was about to overtake her and kill her with his sword, Aphrodite took pity on the girl and turned her into a myrrh tree.

ABOUT IZMIR

According to famous ancient travelers such as Aristides, Strabo, Pliny and Pausanias, Izmir was founded around 1450 B.C. by TANTALUS, King of Manisa (Spilos) to the north-east of the present-day city.

There is also a legend to the effect that it was founded by the Amazons. The one certain thing is that Izmir is not a Greek word and would appear to be derived from an autochthonous language.

The excavations carried out in 1948 by the British Archaeological Institute of Athens and, after 1960, by the Turkish Historical Association under Prof. Ekrem Akurgal have shown that the first settlement, known as Bayraklı, can be dated as far back as the Bronze Age (3500-1000 B.C.)

At the beginning of the 20th century Izmir was a centre of commerce and entertainment rivaling Istanbul and Salonica in the hierarchy of Ottoman cities and famous for its raisins and seedless grapes, its almonds, its horsedrawn phaetons, its spring festival, its "gold drop'' Eau de Cologne and nargiles or water-pipes. The population of 200,000 at the turn of the century has now grown to 3 million. All types of cottons and textiles, together with agricultural produce such as tobacco, grapes, figs, olives and olive oil are exported from Izmir to all four corners of the world. Today the city retains its importance as the largest export harbour in Turkey.

The city hosts an international arts festival during June and July . Izmir International fair, the first of Republic of Turkey supported by exhibitions and cultural events , takes place in Kulturpark , in the heart of the city since 79 years every SeptemberThe expo area serves for various commercial exhibitions trough out the year, most famous ones Marble Turkey, Travel Turkey, Wedding Turkey…

Izmir has a very old sportive background and leaded the foundamentals in development of athletism ,soccer and basketball . Izmir hosted the Mediterranean Olympic Games in 1971 .In 2005 having realized Universidad Games , this September Izmir shall host an another big event the European Basketball Finals.

Sea sports is another big attraction ;yachting ,fishing and wind surfing are top trends in Çeşme, Foca, Urla, Teos, Alacati resorts.

Izmir is connected by domestic and international flights through Adnan Menderes Airport .There are a modern rapid transit railway line running from the southwest to the northeast and motorway circling the city.

Despite its advantegous location and its heritage,Izmir has suffered until recently,as one author puts it ,from ‘sketchy understanding’ in the eyes of outsiders.

When the Ottoman took over Izmir in the 15th century they did not inherit compelling historical memories,unlikethe two other keys of the trade network,namely Istanbul and Aleppo.

Its emergence as a major international port as of the 17th century was largely a result of the attraction it exercised over foreigners ,and the city’s European orientation.

Very different people found Izmir attractive over the ages and the city has always been governed by fresh inspirations,including for the very location of its center,and is quick to adopt novelties and projects.

Day-1 : IZMIR Arrive to Izmir and transfer to 5 star hotel. Check-in

and room settlement trasactions. Afternoon Halfday Izmir tour is beginning. Tour starts with the visit of the Alexander The Great Castle from 4th Century BC on the PAGOS- HILL overlooking the whole city and ancient Agora (the best preserved Roman Market). Our next stop is the Archaelogıcal Museum with Artcrafts from old Symrna and Ephesus. Proceed to a Clocktower 99 years old that is the Symbol of Izmir. Then we visit Historical and Art Museum in the Fair and then visit KEMERALTI, the Old Bazaar with 2001 shops. After you can visit Kızlar Agası Inn. It was built ın 1741 and it was rebuilt ın 1993 . Also you can shopping in that inn’s stores. End of the tour, return to the hotel to rest. You will get your dinner at Adabeyi Restaurant. The restaurant is located in a literally unique house designed by acclaimed genius of its era, an extraordinary architect Alexander Guestave EIFFEL, an unique house withnessing history of Izmır from the sea for 150 years. Day-2 : Ephesus & Virgin Mary

After the breakfast depart from the hotel for Ephesus & Virgin Mary Tour. During the time Anatolia was ruled by Rome, the Romans have built hundreds of great theatres and in Ephesus the visit the ancient theatre will be unforgettable. The Library of Celsus, the brothel, houses of the rich, numerous monumental baths, Agoras. The Temple Of Artemis in Ephesus was one of the seven wonders of the world and then visit The House Of Virgin Mary where she has spent her last days is visited by thousands of visitors every year. Return to the hotel to rest. Dinner at Tavaci Recep Usta Restaurant. Many of traditional taste are waiting you at the restaurant. After the dinner overnight at Izmir hotel.

Day-3 : Izmir - Çesme

After the breakfast depart to Urla for Paintball Teambuilding activitie. You can create your group and spend hours of fun intertwined with nature. Departure from Paintball area to 5 star hotel in Çesme. Check-in and room settlement trasactions. Lunch at Dost Pide Restaurant. Dost Pide Restaurant is very famous place in Ilica, Çesme. You can taste different taste of traditional foods. After the lunch depart for Çesme Tour. Çesme is very famous with it’s history, thermal hot springs, beaches, windsurf paradise, scuba diving and nightlife. And than moving to Alacati. The town of Alaçatı is located on the "narrow waist" Çesme Peninsula traces in its extremity. It is at the center of a corridor where the winds from the north to the south and in the reverse direction abound. The dominant summer wind of poyraz allows Alaçatı to "breathe", while lodos wind which blows more frequently in winter keeps the climate mild. Day-4 : Chios(Greak Island)

After the breakfast departure from hotel to Çesme Port for Sail and Sailteamwork. To day you will get teambuilding activities with sailing to Chios. Programme includes that making an activity both motivating and educational. Sea looks like working life. Sea is mostly wavy in markets where compatition highly exists. Who Got The Corporate Trainings?

The general manager and the directors of DHL got the “sailteamwork ” training. During the programme they both practiced team working and sailing. At the end of 2 intensive days, managers of DHL struggled with crysises successfully on the sailing boat that we made intensionally.

The director and the sales team of BAT got the essential sailing training to practice team working. They achieved struggling with every changing conditions and crysises.

The managers and directors of Migros have started sailing at the beginning of 2010 who have supported sailing regattas with sponsorships preiovusly. Recognising the values that sailing will add to their company and deciding to keeping on excitemen of sailing they made a racing team and keep on their trainings. They got their first rank in April as the winner of race.

The general manager and the directors of IKEA got an intensed “Sailteamwork ” programme.

The members of Philip Morris Sailing Club got essential sailing training and racing training.

We became the champion with Arkas Managers in the 2010 Arkas BAYK Cup with Bernard Arkas who was the skipper of the sailing boat.
