Unshackled History: the Wreck of

the Slave Ship, São José, 1794 brings into memory

the enslaved people who lost their lives aboard the slave ship the São José that

ran aground off Clifton’s 4th Beach in 1794. It documents the journey of the wreck – from its tragic

end, its discovery, and ultimately to its place in the future studies of slave wrecks.

The lives of 12 women in the service of the Cape Colony and the position of women during the early colonial period are brought to light in

Under Cover of Darkness. Amongst them are Krotoa, Susanna van Bengal, and Zara van der Caab.

Aluta Continua profiles a selection of stories from students living in the Western Cape during the 1976 student uprisings, and seeks to map their individual

and collective contribution to the fall of apartheid and the subsequent dream of a free and fair South Africa for all.

National Symbols takes a look at the symbols that define us as a nation – promoting and instilling a

sense of pride, identity and unity. In a similar way, our African Union symbols point

to the significance of unity across the African continent.

Matereality challenges traditional notions around what materials are suited to art-making, and gives insight into the reality of artists who use particular media in deliberate, surprising and innovative ways. Drawing from the Collection is a showcase highlighting the ISANG collection’s drawings; from past eras and many nations, to those unfinished and playful, those serious in their detail, and those satirical in their execution. Also drawn from the Permanent Collection, Tribute brings South Africa’s visual art school syllabus to life, creating a stimulating learning engagement that fosters respect, enjoyment and fresh visual expression. From ‘the picturesque’ to ‘the sublime’ showcases key works by the 17th century French painter, Gaspard Poussin, and the famous 19th century English Romantic, JWM Turner, that embody the concepts of ‘the picturesque’ and ‘the sublime’ within the genre of landscape. There’s also a New Sculptural Development in the ISANG atrium! In the 1930s, Herbert and Eva Meyerowitz were the husband and wife team responsible for carving the Liberman Memorial Doorway. Accomplished sculptors in relief, they also worked on the stucco reliefs for the now-demolished Odeon Theatre in Sea Point – reliefs that are currently installed on either side of the Liberman Door.

50th Anniversary of Earth DayEarth Day, observed on the 22 April, is an annual global celebration of the natural environment and its protection. To mark the 50th commemoration of this event, Iziko will showcase a number of stories highlighting the hidden treasures collected by the museum over the last two hundred years. The exhibition will showcase how collections are used to understand and combat the many environmental issues of our time. Discover how research and conservation is helping our world and how you can become a climate-champion!

Territories Between Us Works from the permanent collection are used as a point of departure to interrogate ideas of place, territory and the complexities of belonging – while also asking questions relating to the areas of thought at this moment in time, specifically in relation to contemporary art collections. The exhibition draws on works from the collection in conversation with artistic interventions and artworks from outside the collection that oscillate between disciplines, modes of working, or tether on the borders of these territories. Territories Between Us seeks to acknowledge that when it comes to the collection, we exist in a time where we are filling gaps we have yet to imagine.

Works by Senzeni Marasela, Samson Mudzunga and Donna Kukama, among several others, are included in the exhibition. Opens at the ISANG on 21 May 2020. Senzeni Marasela | Untitled | 1997 | Mixed media: cloths, silver trays.

Reimagining the William Fehr Collection – is an attempt to critically reinterpret the historical archive of historical artworks, furniture and decorative objects which portrays aspects of Africa’s painful colonial past.

The Effendis of 71 Wale Street, Bo-Kaap shares the untold story of the Effendi family who lived in the house, today the Iziko Bo Kaap Museum, before the forced removals of the 1970s. Who Built Cape Town is dedicated to the enslaved persons, convicts and free workers who built the Mother City, and features artefacts from the Social History Collections. Explore the early expansion of the city, racial and spatial discrimination, and working life in Cape Town.

The Iziko Slave Lodge presents a series of exhibitions, each challenging institutional narratives and bringing accounts of oppression to the fore. In KEMET: Life in Ancient Egypt, navigate the unfolding story of the afterlife as an ordinary Egyptian through an Augmented Reality game developed by students of the Friends of Design: Academy of Digital Arts.

This song is for… brings together a unique collection of dedicated songs, chosen by a survivor of rape. Each song bears personal significance – taking them back to a particular time and place, and evoking a sensory world of memory and feeling. Gabrielle Goliath worked in close collaboration with the survivors and a group of women and gender-queer led musical ensembles to create this work. Closes on 27 April 2020.

Sentinels of the South examines the history, discoveries and current role of South Africa’s Antarctic and Southern Ocean exploration – highlighting the rich and unique biodiversity found on the Prince Edward Islands, and the role these islands play in understanding the impact of climate change and invasive species on indigenous biodiversity.

Origins of Early Sapiens Behaviour promises to blow you away as you learn about our collective human heritage; and

Tata Madiba: Father of our Democracy, Father of our Nation comes as a sincere conversation around the life of Nelson Mandela, his struggles, his joys, and his remarkable contribution to the protection of South Africa’s biodiversity.
