As we journey into the New Year we are surrounded in winterby the magnificent and picturesque gift that Mother Nature hasgiven us. We leave behind the glitter and glow of Christmas andwelcome back our routines and longer days.

With these days comes the light, which we have missed. Wetravel to work in the dark and we travel home in the dark. Wemiss the sun. This is a time of year in which the Inner Light iskindled in spite of outer darkness. It is a powerful time for rev-elation through dreams and meditations.

During the Winter Solstice the angelic realms and our spiritguides are much closer. All life is touched by the energies play-ing within and upon the Earth at this time, especially when weconnect with Nature. Few are untouched by these energies atthis time. Winter Solstice offers us the opportunity to go within,however the push and hype to be ready for Christmas takes usaway from our natural rhythms and energy of the season. Weneed time for introspection and meditation to enhance ourawareness and awaken the seeds of inner potentials.

journey in 2013 is to take time for introspection,

get out of the main stream for a while.

Being out in Nature is a sure way to re-connect and be energized.We are being reminded that we are doing the best that we can. Ap-proach each day with unconditional love for ourselves. Belly dance...coin belts, veils, zills, spicy tabla rhythms, snake arms,shimmy... While belly dance is rhythmic, graceful and entertaining towatch, it is also a dance form which is quickly gaining recognition forits many health benefits. An increase in strength and fitness, improvedco-ordination and an overall elevation of self-image are some of thebenefits attributed to belly dance. It also serves as an effective form oftherapy for chronic pain conditions and is a wonderful pre/post-natalexercise. Having fun while improving your health and fitness? Absolutely!

Contrary to what the name suggests, belly dance highlights morethan just the movement of the abdomen. While it is a fantastic ab-dominal workout, belly dancing also involves muscles in the pelvis,upper back and neck; the hip and leg muscles are also constantlyengaged providing balance while the dancer moves through a rangeof motions travelling across the floor. Isolated tension and releaseof the upper, lower and side abdominals not only help to shape alovely abdomen, but also develops a strong core which preventslow back pain by stabilizing and supporting the lower back. Accentedhip movements and rolling undulations also involve tucking andreleasing the pelvis, accomplished by contracting the deepmuscles of the lower abdomen. This technique strengthens the abdom-inal floor as well as the vaginal muscles.

The constant twisting and turning of the spine engages and helps de-velop a strong back while holding and rolling the arms in elevated po-sitions not only tones lovely shoulder muscles, but also conditions theneck and upper back muscles. This helps prevent the shoulders fromrounding forward, improving posture. The continuous movement of thedance counteracts the compression of the vertebral discs against eachother which happens when sitting for extended periods of time. Notonly is it a full-body, low-impact workout, belly dance is also a low-injury risk activity since the graceful movements are natural for the fe-male body, making it suitable for women of all ages.

Exercising is one of the recommended non-medicinal treatments forarthritis. Undulations, chin slides and wrist circles are a gentle form ofphysical therapy for women who suffer from arthritis. These move-ments initiate the release of synovial fluid, the body’s natural joint lu-bricant, which helps to increase mobility in the joints of the spine, neckand wrists. Of course, it is strongly recommended that you consult withyour family physician before beginning any new physical activity.

Belly dance is connected with fertility rituals practiced in the Stone Agewhere women danced together to honour Mother Earth in spiritual cer-

emonies. The dancing was a celebration of sexual fertilityinvolving movements that celebrated conception and thebirthing process. It was a dance created by women forwomen, all of whom had a profound instinctive knowledgeof their bodies. Nowadays, the dance proves to be a won-derful form of pre/post-natal exercise. Many movements ofthe pelvis and hips mimic the natural motions of a motherin labour. Rolling, wave-like hip movements help firm thepelvic muscles which are greatly strained during childbirth.These same movements also encourage a normal pelvic re-laxing process which prepares an expecting mother for thenatural rhythm of pelvic tension and relaxation duringlabour. Also, the beauty of the dance becomes more appar-ent when a mother-to-be experiences an ‘inner shift’ whichallows her to accept her changing body and leads her to joy-ful and harmonious movements. An increase in energy andharmony can help her feel relaxed and lead her to more eas-ily connect with her unborn child.

Belly dance is also a wonderful way to ‘lift your spirits.’ Al-though it is a dance involving a certain technique, its styleis shaped by each woman; this is a very liberating experi-ence whereby a woman has the ability to express her per-sonality in an encouraging and non-competitiveenvironment. Many women who take the time to get in-volved with belly dance have shown positive growth in their

personal development and have unveiled their female ‘inner-strength.’While feeling more feminine and artistic, self-esteem increases and manywomen begin to honour their bodies, becoming more comfortable withtheir bellies and hips. Negative emotions linked with PMS, menopauseand mild cases of anxiety and depression have been shown to improveafter participating in belly dance classes. The gathering of belly dancersbecomes both a time for serenity and a playground of laughter and en-joyment as the concerns of the ‘outside world’ seem to disappear.

Overall, belly dance is an exciting and unique form of exercise for allwomen who want to add a new ‘zest’ to life. While it tones muscles anddecreases joint pain, it also creates a sustained feeling of emotional andphysical well-being. Recognizing, feeling and expressing the innatebeauty within may prove to be the most significant benefit of all!

Feels like I’ve come full circle! It is like I’ve been in the cave ofself reflection and transformation for a full and amazing year. I givegreat thanks to the many family, friends and practitioners thathave been part of this truly healing journey. I havealways been curious about the human journeyand what makes us tick, and I am amazedat how much different I feel. I am sograteful to honestly be able to say Ihave more energy, more passion forlife and a clarity about the direc-tion I am going.

My exploration of life has al-ways been focused on self dis-covery and spirituality. Withhow much I loved being out-side as a child and immersed innature, it was no surprise to mewhen over 20 years ago, myhunger for spiritual connectiontook me to the Medicine Wheeland the Sweat lodge. At that firstWheel, we were asked to wander thehills and find a grandfather/grandmotherstone that might be the seed for our ownMedicine Wheel. I had almost given up on thesearch, when I spotted and approached a half sub-merged stone that triggered in me deep sobs of recognition. I re-member having the thought, “Where have you been, I’ve missedyou for so long.” Like many, I love my rocks, but I have never hadsuch a deep emotional reaction to a stone since that moment. Thatbrick-like, four sided elder along with the encouragement of mydear friend Estella, has seeded my Medicine Wheels ever since ourtender reunion.

I recognize that a huge part of being restored on my spiralling jour-

ney this year was from being on the land and being clear aboutmy intentions. The altruistic nature of the land nurtured all those

moments of resting, being in ceremony, singing at the fire,dancing and walking, one step at a time around

my Medicine Wheel of discovery. Eachpoint on my Wheel, every friend, fam-

ily member and practitioner thatcared for me, mirrored a different

perspective and gave me an op-portunity to shift my percep-

tions and my experience.

I appreciate Inelia Benzand her way of acknowl-edging and welcomingyour core patterns andfears in order to shiftthem. It takes massive

amounts of energy to holdonto old patterns that show

up in your body, mind andemotions. What a relief to let

them go and to now have so muchenergy to be creative and available

for everything I can imagine life to be.With the gift of so many light-filled ener-

getic alignments this past year, I know we allhave countless opportunities coming to us. This is truly a

year for moving more deeply into the core of who we are, qui-eting our minds in activities that inspire us and keep us healthy,so we can be of service and live with kindness.

'No Tension' RETREAT...Elemental Foundations with Padma

In October, 2012, Wendy from Interior Wellness joined the

Sushwap retreat with Padma, popular yoga and meditation

teacher. Padma is an enlightened educator and one of Canada’s

most respected and popular teachers of meditation, yoga and

self-realization.

The Wikipedia modern definition for 'retreat' is to leave everyday busi-ness for a few days (weekend-retreat) up to weeks. The goal is to letgo of daily stress and problems. When a dear friend offered me thechance to attend Padma's Eagle Bay retreat I was ecstatic for the op-portunity to spend time with this gracious yogi. I had had the oppor-tunity to attend a morning class with her at the 2012 Interior WellnessFestival and was blessed by her teaching style...Here is my adventure:

Friday afternoon...jumping into the vehicle with lovely Lucy to ride-share to the Shuswap... an hour full of chatting and getting to knoweach other...turning off the main road and slowing our pace to manoeu-vre along the narrow lakeside road...fall colours are vibrant... the seren-ity seeps in... I am blessed to be spending the weekend in RETREAT!

Arriving to the smell of wood burning fires...stepping out of the car todeep inhalations of cedar...freshness...'pin-drop' stillness! Being shownto my room...discovering a lovingly prepared gift bag (I LOVE giftbags) on my pillow...all is so cozy...I move inward.Circle time...meeting new BEINGS, friends from the moment our eyesmeet...drawn to this place of tranquility for as many reasons as thereare individuals...instantly feeling the common bond that unites us asseekers of balance, concentration, strength and calm in our bodies andlives.

An ice-breaker game, snacks, meditation and gentle stretches...step-ping out into the night with flash lights to move to our 'cabin'...gigglesand 'good-nights' echo as we trek down an unfamiliar road in thedark...with Lucy beside me it's okay....sweet, fresh air induced slum-ber...awe....And so the weekend began and continued for the next twodays as gentle Padma shares the foundations of classical yoga, medi-tation, breath exercises and philosophy that she embodies. The practiceis easy, useful and the meditation skills delightful!

We explored what we are seeking in meditation. Learned mini-yogamoves to gently adjust the body during meditation and explored thesubtle and sometimes profound shifts that occur when using differenthand positions (mudras) during meditation.

My admiration of Padma's stamina, strength and flexibility grows aswe learn how yoga moves are healing medicine...with slow, thoughtfulmovements we can take the time to 'listen' to what our bodies aretelling us through the restrictions and 'tweeks' that we feel. Gentlystretching and moving towards release and freedom ofmovement...Move slowly...Take time to center...Be at Peace...Be inAction!

The time to leave has come...my mind is full of new ideas and subjectsexplored......eager to implement some of the new-foundtechniques...Within hours of leaving I am on a plane for the EastCoast...back into life and the job I love... I am refreshed and rejuve-nated...energized & recharged...grateful for RETREAT.

I guess what I am trying to say is that Fall was busy. I would sayoverwhelming even. I was teaching 8-10 classes a week, some-times more. That is more than I have ever taught, with no kids,one kid or two. So, my grand ideas of infusing my life with theintricacies of deep yoga philosophies sort of fell by the wayside.Sort of like the hand-made rag rug I plan on crocheting myfriends who got married this summer. I wrote them an IOU. Itwill happen when it happens.

So the same goes for deeper learning in my life right now. Notall of my learning needs to come from books and we take inwhat we are ready for when we allow ourselves to be open tolearning. I took what I was ready for from the book: samskaras.Michael Stone describes samskaras as grooves derived from pastexperiences in our psyche, but also in our body, that colour allfuture responses and behaviours. These grooves can get deep.So deep that we can’t see our way anymore and we keep makingthe same mistakes over and over. Parenting is a good teacher ofmy grooves. If I keep scolding my three year old who is actingout rather than trying to see what is causing the behaviour andgiving her other options, I am probably going to get the sameresult. Isn’t this the definition of insanity that people float about?

“I am willing to let my story change.” This was a phrase on oneof those little facebook memes that went around last week. Weget so attached to our stories. The stories about our childhoodtrauma, the stories about our heart ache, the stories about ourphysical injuries and ailments. We hold on to our body’s re-sponse to pain long after this response is even useful. Groovesare created. True story. So, yes I am willing, but to change mystory requires me to take pause and change my responses, to takea different path. These are the little things every day. This takesself awareness. So with the New Year, a beginner mind and noexpectations (or very little anyway), I will make my way backinto a meditation practice. A formal one, more than focusing onmy breath to get back to sleep after being woken up yet again.Just like a person getting into physical fitness after a hiatus hasto put one foot in front of the other, for me it is just one inhaleand one exhale, and then another. And another. And another.

My Changing PracticeMy Changing Body

Towards the end of last summer I was reading a book by Michael Stone,a yogi, Buddhist and psychotherapist from Toronto. The book is calledThe Inner Tradition of Yoga. It is dense, but satisfying, kinda like an avo-cado cookie from Hello Toast in downtown Kamloops. If you have hadone, you will know what I am talking about. My idea for this article wasto take what I learned from this book into my life and my classes and writeabout it for this article. Grand plans! Well, I haven’t picked up that booksince fall started. Since those crisp fall days that I wrote so fondly aboutback then hit, I haven’t picked up any book. I barely have time to readmagazine articles. I leave tabs open on my browser for days hoping thatperhaps through osmosis that I will learn about biomechanics through thekeys of my laptop.

Recently, Time Magazine published an article statingthat detoxification is unnecessary and not helpful. Istrongly differ with Time based on the following con-siderations: In 1989, over 6 trillion pounds of chem-ical toxins were dumped in North America in oneyear, alone. Can you imagine what havoc we havewreaked on this planet over several decades?

100% of adults today have synthetic and industrialchemicals like dioxins (bleach) and PCB's stored inour bodies. 4. Efficient IrrigationChoose your watering zones carefully. Keep the high-water gardensclose to the water sources and in low, wet areas. Don’t stick a water-loving plant in the middle of a predominantly zero-water garden!Water deeply and less frequently. This encourages deep, strong,water-seeking roots in all plants, especially turf.

5. Appropriate Plant SelectionHere are the top three secrets to low-maintenance xeriscaping: peren-nial, perennial, perennial! I want to plant something and watch itgrow, spread, and take over all the bare, weedy spots in our yard, allon its own! Herbs and selected hardy annuals can add some colourwhile you are waiting for perennials to fill in. When shopping forplants, learn the Latin name to be sure you get the right variety, andencourage your local nursery to stock drought-resistant plants.

6. Mulching and HardscapesMulching is an important aspect of xeriscaping, and should be doneat several intervals throughout the year. A wide variety of mulchesare available, from compost to rock mulches. Be careful with rockmulches, as it is hard to extract weeds and debris from between thestones. Use hardscapes to accent your landscape and to provide use-ful spaces. Each year, my birthday request to my dad, who has a zenaffinity to rocks of all kinds, is a natural stone feature for the yard.So far, we have done a rock pathway, herb garden, and a rock gardenand gravel parking space.

7. Appropriate MaintenanceThe basics of maintenance are straightforward: remove all weeds;anticipate full-grown size when planting; avoid invasive plants; andselect plants carefully for the climate. The ultimate goal of propermaintenance is to reduce your workload and water needs, while in-creasing enjoyment of your landscape.

Xeriscaping must always be adapted to each region. In the LowerMainland, xeriscaping actually includes hostas and other water-lov-ing plants. In our semi-desert region, we can still find beautifulplants that have low-water needs and are adapted to our climate.Now is the time to start planning your dream garden, so that you willbe able to put your plan into action in a few short months.

The Seven Principles of Xeriscape

1. Planning and DesignWith a bare, 0.8 acre lot in the middle of town, I find myself continuallydrawn into the vortex of planning and design. Where to start? How tostart? What do I need? How do I cover this sandy, rocky river-bed withsustainable and practical plants and features that fit our lifestyle? Fo-cusing on our family’s needs and priorities helps me narrow down theoptions. Where do we want the garden, the play space, the garage, theaccess lanes, and the entertainment areas? I try to look at my yard interms of usage zones, which allows me to better create a vision for ourspace, in both the short-term and long-term.

2. Soil Analysis and ImprovementsWhat does my soil need? Hmmm, perhaps I should be asking, “whatdoesn’t it need?” No matter your soil type, it will benefit from organicmatter. We just keep working in the compost and manure. We are alsolearning to “appreciate the natural beauty” of some weeds. Althoughclover is traditionally considered a weed, it has regained some favour inrecent years as an attractive, hardy groundcover. It is gorgeous and greenand it spreads enthusiastically, covering all the bare patches in the lawn.Beware of bees, for though these little pollinating wonders are indeedwelcome, they like to hide in the clover, and are a hazard to bare-footedchildren.

3. Practical Turf AreasWe have a few small grassy patches, which we have planted with a slow-growing, drought-resistant mix. But we live across from an elementaryschool with two big soccer fields. Do we really need a play area largeenough to accommodate a family football game? I think the key to turfareas is that they are used on a regular basis. Otherwise, a more efficientgroundcover or feature is in order.

More than “Zero”!Xeriscape

It is much more interesting than those daunting lunar images of what many of us mistakenly call “Zero-scaping!” Xeriscaping,essentially “gardening with nature,” capitalizes on the available water and resources in a region. A Mother’s Touch“A mother’s touch is the first love a child feels”

For a child, a mother’s touch provides a feeling of security, com-fort and love. I think we can all agree that we have experiencedthis at one time or another through our own experience with ourmothers, and for some, as mothers themselves. It’s amazing howa mother’s embrace can heal almost any ailment from hurt feel-ings to bruised knees. Scientific research is now showing howimportant a loving touch is to a child’s development and howthe absence of it can affect the child’s wellbeing.

One of the first significant studies done on the connection be-tween touch and infants was in the 1970s performed by scientistHarry Harlow. The testing was done on young chimps andthough the study has been condemned as unethical, it proved tohold valuable results. The basis of the series of experiments wasto place infant chimps in isolation for various amounts of timewith no other physical interaction. The ending results of thechimps varied from depression, loss of interest in things likefood, behavioral/social issues and in extreme cases, death.

Now even though these cases were not human infants, science isnow connecting behavioral, emotional and social issues to thelack of physical and emotional attention given at a young age.Studies done in orphanages around the world where children areoften subjected to diminished physical attention had higher cor-tisol (the stress hormone) levels than children in a nurturingfamily. The studies also show that these children also had vary-ing levels of oxytocin and vasopressin, hormones responsiblefor emotional and social bonding.

But how is touch so closely linked to human development? Neu-rologists have found that during infancy, touch impacts thebrain, affecting short-term behavior and even long-term mentaland emotional development. Physical touch triggers a release ofchemicals within our bodies, and during infant developmentthese chemicals help to build the neuropathways that stay withus into adulthood.

So what can you do to ensure your child receives adequate physi-cal nurturing? Infant massage is a great way to achieve this, and itcan help to strengthen the bond between child and primary care-giver. Infant massage can be performed at any time of the day,and can be used as part of a baby’s routine, such as prior to bed.Infant massage has been linked to helping with discomfort (suchas colic), neurological development, boosting the immune system,muscle tone and growth. And the best part about it: it’s fun! Justfind a relaxing area where you and your baby can be together.There is no right or wrong formula to the massage; trial and erroris the best. Make notes about what your baby enjoys after eachmassage and use it for next time. Infant massage can also be car-ried on into childhood. What child wouldn’t enjoy a massage afterhockey, soccer or piano practice? Just remember a parent’s armsare more comforting than anyone else’s.

�is time of year invites you to rest, nourish, and recharge your body and entire being. A wonderful way to do this is with a Restorative yoga Practice. You can include Restorative Yoga in your regular asana practice as a sweet bonus at the end, or do an entire practice of restorative poses. Restorative Yoga is especially nice in the evening as a way to unwind and help yourself get a good night’s sleep.

Stay present during your practice, focusing on your breath and healing thoughts.

It’s important to remember that, even though it might not seem like you’re doing much when you’re in the poses, you are communicating with your body, mind, and heart the whole time. You’re also detoxifying your body, so be sure to stay hydrated throughout the day and after your practice.

Restorative Yoga is one of the most nurturing and healing practices. �is approach to asana practice is especially appropriate if you are feeling run-down, stressed out, fatigued, or dealing with emotional trauma such as grief or sadness.

�is is an excellent way to release stuck emotions, especially in the chest openers. Why? Because when you do a restorative chest opener, you’re completely supported.

Allowing the heart to be exposed can often feel vulnerable, but in restorative postures you feel safe, knowing that you can let go of anything that you don’t need any more because you are quite literally completely supported. �is helps to lift depression and release anything that doesn’t serve you—just have that gentle release as your intention and breathe it into being. Also, know that it’s very normal to have emotions come up during yoga practice, so if that happens to you, remember it’s simply energy moving.

Breathe. Keep breathing. Let it go.

One of the great things about the supported chest openers in Restorative Yoga is that they counter the slouching position we often �nd ourselves in. �is is wonderful for the neck, shoulders, and back!

By gently stretching the muscles in the fronts of the shoulders and opening the chest, a great deal of freedom is created in the breath, circulation, and the heart chakra.

�e practice on the opposite page is an excerpt from my book, Yoga for Dragon Riders. It includes restorative poses and active stretches for whole body ease and enjoyment.

�is practice is designed to create well being and a sense of freedom. As with anything, it is your responsibility to discern if this practice is right for you or not.

NOTE: If you don’t have bolsters available to you, just gather pillows and blankets and make the same shapes for your body. Please know that bolsters are �rm, so you may have to pile up quite a few pillows to get the same e�ect.

Also, cover up with a blanket to keep warm if you are even a little bit cool. You might like to play some soothing music. At all times in these poses you should be comfortable, so make whatever adjustments necessary so that your body says, “Oh yeah, this is delicious!”

Savasana itself is a yoga practice.

It’s a good thing yoga is a practice, not something you’re expected to do perfectly right o� the bat—or ten years into it for that matter. In fact, you’re perfect just as you are, so don’t worry about it. Just keep doing your very best every time and you will continue to improve.

One thing you should keep in mind about Savasana (pronounced “sha-vas-a-na”) is that it isn’t a collapse. �ere’s a di�erence between relaxing and collapsing. Relaxing is mindful; there is an inner fullness which the outer body, muscles, bones, organs, and so on, are held by as they soften. Collapse is not supported, and does not allow the circulation of blood, lymph, Prana, and breath that is so necessary for optimal healing.

When you do Savasana, start by aligning your body as best you can. �en feel the brightness within—feel how full of life you are! Allow that inner fullness to keep you buoyant from within, then drape your outer body over it. While your inner body remains spacious, let your skin drape, your bones be heavy, your organs rest. Settle into your back body.

And then, in this relaxed yet illuminated state, breathe.

Feel your breath enter and leave. Notice how your body pulses with the breath and how that feels. Notice that by focusing on certain areas of your body with your breath, these parts of your body relax further.

Any time your mind wanders, gently and lovingly bring it back to the breath. �e practice of Savasana brings you the most bene�ts when you are present in the moment. Let your awareness �oat on your breath. Feel every cell in your body sparkle with healing and vitality!

It’s that time of year again, when society tellsus it is important to set new goals for a freshnew year. But do you remember last years’goals? Do you only remember them becauseyou failed miserably and went back to yourold habits within a few weeks last January?Fear not, you are not alone in this. Our soci-ety is one of procrastination: I’ll start onMonday; next week I’ll get going; the NewYear will be a great time to begin my newgoals. Why are we putting these, often healthenhancing, goals off? I can only offer an ob-servation.

We are living in a state of overwhelm. Soci-ety has produced dramatic improvements inscience and technology, and the rate of tech-nological advancement just continues to pickup speed. We can now communicate with andreceive news from all parts of the world,whether we are in front of our computer orjust holding our phones.

We each feel the societal pressure to maintainconstant communication, to stay up-to-dateon the latest news/products/ technology/so-cial media, and still maintain our normaleveryday lives. As a woman you might findyourself even more overwhelmed, knowingthat you should be maintaining these thingsand taking care of your family in the best waypossible, like those other people on Facebookare doing, so they say.

How could you not feel overwhelmed by theexcess of information that is constantly bom-barding you at home, on the drive/bike/walkto work, in the office, and at the gym? It isimpossible to escape the news, avoid the mar-keting, and turn down the racket of the world.While at the same time it can be difficult toignore the fact that you should be doingthings perfectly since you can find the how-to on that perfection online, in a simple step-by-step format. Everything is simpler andmore available, but that simplicity comeswith excess, expectation, and overwhelm. So

if you were feeling guilty about not complet-ing those goals last year, you can give your-self a little hug and apologize for being sohard on yourself. You just fell into the over-whelm trap.

The overwhelm trap is easy to set. We tendto be a goal-oriented society and goals can behelpful, so we set ourselves up, choosing atime to start (Monday, next week, New Years)that can always be pushed back, dreaming ofa quick plan, and then setting our generallyunreachable goal. I speak here from experi-ence, so there is no judgment in these words.However, I think that it’s time for us to stopthe madness! As Albert Einstein said, insan-ity is “doing the same thing over and overagain and expecting different results.” So letus stop setting the same old trap and start set-ting and achieving goals that work for us.

Step 1. Set an achievable goal. It is alwaysgreat to dream big, but expecting to lose 50pounds in 1 month is not a reasonable goal.If you want to lose 50 pounds set a goal tolose it in 2013, or to lose 5 pounds a month,or better yet, to lose inches from your waistor reduce your percentage of body fat. Makeyour goal something that you know you canachieve, but you know you will have to workat to achieve.

Step 2. Create a solid plan. Instead of think-ing about what you might do, get seriousabout your plan. Write it down, create atimetable, schedule time for your goal in yourday planner, and tell your friends and familyso they can help keep you accountable.Schedule time to check-in and see how youare doing with your goal.

Step 3. Start today. Do not set a time foryourself to start, just start right away. Whenyou set a time to start you create a build-upand allow yourself to make excuses. Stop it.Start right now.

Step 4. Make it habitual. Take small stepsto make your goal a habit. If it is to have bet-ter balance this year, start balancing everytime you brush your teeth; if it is to eathealthier, replace one unhealthy meal everyday with something green; if it is to loseweight, start your day with 15 minutes of ex-ercise. Create one small habit and once it issolid, add a new one! Do not give yourselften things to do a day and expect that you aregoing to be able to do that and everything elsein your hectic life every single day; you willbe setting yourself up for failure.

Step 5. Visualize. Take a few minutes everyday to visualize yourself achieving your goal.Either when you wake up in the morning orright before you go to sleep at night are greattimes to take the time. See yourself achievingthe goal and allow yourself to feel how greatyou will feel when it is accomplished. Themore you can experience those feelings thecloser you will be to achieving your goal,since in reality, your goal is to achieve a feel-ing that will come from the action.

If you read through those steps and stillhave 101 excuses why you need to wait tostart your goal, then you need to take aminute and decide whether you want yourego to run the rest of your life. We can allthink of excuses, great excuses, but thosepeople who take immediate action are theones who are going to get the best results.So get going, take some action, begin tofeel the great feeling of achieving yourgoals, and spread your feelings of joy farand wide! After all, if it’s you and notyour ego that is in charge, your ultimategoal will be a more joyful, peaceful, lov-ing world! Happy 2013! Namaste

As the holiday season winds down, sometimes winter

can leave us feeling deflated physically, emotionally

and financially. Here are a few ideas to keep you bal-

anced in body, mind, and wallet too!

Drink up! Many of us have taken in our fair share of

holiday beverages that taste so good but happen to be laden in fat,alcohol and sugar. Lets lighten up with some deliciously hydratingherbal tea. Try peppermint to help with digestion, dandelion for itsdetoxifying effects, or lemon balm to soothe and calm. Replenishthose electrolytes by trying coconut water, or for an antioxidant

boost, green tea is always yummy choice.

Soak Who doesn't love a good bath? Especially this time of

the year a warm soak can be very beneficial. Soothing your tiredachy muscles, boosting your immune system and simply quietingyour mind are just a few ways a bath can aid in your wellness.Make your soak extra decadent by adding some Epsom or Dead

Sea salts to help with detoxification.

Give yourself a hand Self-massage is a won-

derful way to reconnect with your body and alleviate tensionthroughout this chilly weather. Take a few minutes each day just tosay "thank you" to your physical self by giving those traps a nicesqueeze, circling your fingers over your temples and scalp, or evenkicking off your shoes and rolling a ball underneath your feet while

you're at your work desk.

Walk it off Most people don't think of walking as a

spiritual endeavor, but why not make it one? A simple walk is notonly wonderful for gently lubricating your hip and knee joints, it'salso a great way to get in touch with nature. Be mindful of yourbreathing and truly take in everything the outdoors has to offer and

how it affects all five of your senses. As an added bonus, taking a strollin the day will help nourish your body with some much needed vitamin

D that so many of us lack in these dark winter months.

Sweat Baby, Sweat Whether it be in the sauna, an

Epsom salt bath, at the gym or dancing up a storm in your living room,sweating is such a great way to get rid of those toxins lingering in yourbody, unclog your pores and fight off infection (among other bene-

fits).

Give a little bit A 2008 study by Harvard Business

School found that giving money to someone else actually increasedthe participant’s happiness more than just spending it on themselves.Generosity, such as giving to a charity, has also been linked to releas-ing endorphins in the brain creating what is known as the "helper'shigh".

Obviously no one needs a study to know how good it feels to give butsometimes life moves so fast we forget. This doesn't mean just finan-cially. Help out a friend in need, contact your community and find outwho could use a hand, donate your time somewhere or simply just givea compliment. As Anne Frank has said, "No one has ever become poorby giving".

These are just a few simple (and virtually free) ideas to make your sea-son a little more peaceful. Whether you're a winter person or not, tryto embrace this beautiful time of year. It's a perfect time to reflect, re-connect, and recharge. Curl up with your favorite book, write in yourjournal, get in touch with old friends, or do whatever makes you feelgood. Winter will be over before we know it, and we'll soon be cravingthose chilly nights and short days when we could truly submerge intoour winter wellness.

Most people are still unsure about what Pi-lates really is. The easiest answer or guessfor most is to liken it to yoga. This is notthe case. Pilates and Yoga while both verybeneficial, have very different origins andhistories and repertoire.

Pilates is an integrated movement systemcreated by Joseph Pilates that works in adifferent way to other fitness techniques. Ittargets the deeper, smaller muscles versusworking the larger, mobilizing muscles ofthe body thus building strength from theinside out. Pilates rebalances the body andhelps bring it into correct alignment, im-proving posture. With the focus and preci-sion of the movements, it will help toreshape your body, creating longer, moretoned muscles. Pilates will also improveyour core, achieving perfect balance be-tween strength and flexibility, and is agreat way to relieve unwanted stress andtension. Pilates is a great addition to the al-ready conditioned athlete looking for thatextra edge or for someone who is comingfrom a place of injury. Pilates is a greatform of rehabilitation.

If you have been thinking about startingyour Pilates journey, here are some helpfulhints to get you on your way.

First, do your due diligence. Pilates is agreat form of exercise for any body. The

aim is to generate heat with the breath tofacilitate change within the body. The oxy-genation of blood cells is the beginning ofthe healing process. Tension is releasedand imbalances corrected. From low backpain, shoulder, knee or hip pain, rehabili-tation from injury or a host of other issues,Pilates can help.

Second, look for an instructor who has aquality certification. Many training pro-grams will require just a minimum of 40hours to achieve certification to beginteaching. In the Pilates industry, this is re-ferred to as ‘the weekend warrior work-shop’. A quality certification starts with aminimum of 450 hours of tuition and goesup from there.

Third, don’t be afraid to try more than oneinstructor. You have to have a good feelingabout who is teaching you. You need tofeel you can trust them and that they haveyour best interest at heart. Pilates is aboutcreating change from within. As the bodygoes through some of these changes, it canhave a dramatic effect on one’s psyche.

Fourth, do at least one private. This is forboth your benefit and your instructor’s. Bytaking a private, you will get a much betteridea of what moving from your center isall about. Your habits and muscle patternscan be highlighted so you are aware of

what needs to be changed. Also, a privategives your instructor a better picture ofhow you move. They will be aware of yourpatterns and be more specific with theircues to help you in a group setting if thatis how you choose to move forward.

Finally, make a commitment. Trying Pi-lates just once in a group setting is notenough for some people to make the re-quired connections. Pilates is intelligentexercise and requires thought and intentprior to making a movement. If you arecoming to your first class after a busy day’swork, chances are your mind will wanderand not be 100% focused on you. If this isthe case, the essence of the work will getmissed. Joseph Pilates said “In 10 sessionsyou will feel the difference, in 20 you willsee the difference and in 30 you will havea whole new body.”

However Pilates is marketed, whether it’sto gain strength in any sport or just to bet-ter your alignment, give Pilates a try. Whatpain have you got to lose? What sort of lifewill you gain?

Doing yoga and teaching yoga are inextricablyintertwined. The experiences we have on ouryoga mats help us to refine our personal practiceand provide insights into how we might best shareyoga with others. The farther we go in our prac-tice, the more we discover the vast universe of el-ements that are at play in yoga’s incrediblepotential for enhancing our lives.

In the interrelation of these elements we come tospecific practices—sequences of actions—thathave different effects depending on how it allflows together. This brings us to several ques-tions:

• What are the elements of a complete practice? • How are they best structured to make the prac-tice most accessible, sustainable, and transform-ing? • What are the best ways to begin a yoga practicesession? • What should each session include? • What are the best ways to sequence differentasanas, breathing practices, and meditations? • What is the relationship between this asana andthat asana? How does this asana affect that asana? • What are the effects of asanas ordered in a par-ticular way compared to the same asanas ordereddifferently? • What are the relationships within and betweenfamilies of asanas—standing asanas, core asanas,arm balances, back bends, twists, forward bends,hip openers, and inversions? • What about pranayama (conscious breathing)and meditation practices? •What affects them, and how in turn do they af-fect what follows? • On what basis—other than habit, intuition, orwhim—should one determine the overall struc-ture and sequence of a complete class? • What about moving from one class to the next

across the span of a week, a month, a year, or alifetime? • What are the best ways to design classes for alifetime of yoga?

Superficially simple, these questions about se-quencing decisions are as complex as the beauti-fully diverse mosaic of human beings doing yoga.Age, genetics, lifestyle, physical and mental con-dition, environmental setting, personal intention,and spiritual philosophy all come into play indoing yoga. Moreover, some of these variablescan change from day to day, inviting or even re-quiring us to modify what we’re doing—or atleast how we do what we’re doing.

Taking a holistic perspective on yoga, it’s vitallyimportant to give experiential and thoughtful con-sideration to all of these myriad elements, which,when properly blended together, lead to healthy,wholesome, and sustainable yoga practices inwhich students more and more come to a place ofbalance along their yoga path and in their largerlives.

The primary roles of a yoga teacher are showingstudents a yogic pathway and offering them guid-ance along that path. Doing this with inspiration,knowledge, skill, patience, compassion, and cre-ativity defines a good teacher. The many elementsof teaching—creating a safe space for self-explo-ration, crafting class sequences that take studentson physical and energetic journeys, cueing stu-dents in their process of refinement, offeringpractical guidance in meditation, offering exam-ples for extending the practice off the mat— col-lectively lead to the same thing: yoga as a processfor awakening to the truth of one’s being, to anabiding sense of equanimity amid the shiftingtides of daily experience and the seasons of one’slife.

If yoga were a practice of attainment in which wewere all aiming for a certain goal, the role of theteacher would be much simpler. We would tellstudents what to do and how to do it. Sequenceswould be prescribed even as we would draw fromour knowledge of yoga philosophy, energetics,anatomy, and psychology to craft classes and in-structions that correctly orient students in movingtoward the goal. In the physical practice, instruc-tion would focus on the perfection poses; inpranayama we would teach the perfection ofbreath and energetic balance; in meditation wewould teach students to still the mind.

But yoga is not a practice of attainment; it is anunending process of self-discovery and self-trans-formation. In this process, teachers are facilitatorsand guides who offer insightful encouragementto each student along his or her unique path as itevolves, breath by breath.

The art and science of teaching yoga is creativelyexpressed in how you craft asana, pranayama, andmeditation sequences that honor the needs and in-tentions of the students in your classes. Your cre-ativity is given form by yoga philosophy, the styleof yoga you are teaching, the biomechanics andenergetic requirements and effects of asanas, andby your personal sense of purpose in meaning-fully sharing yoga. Here we look to use our fullpalette of knowledge and skills to create classesthat resonate with the needs and expressed inten-tions of students, offering them a clearer pathwayto more radiant well-being.

Often the changes we want to take on this time ofyear are hard to sustain. Perhaps by now youhave already set and broken your New Year'sresolution. Why not try addressing your “self “instead of just changing your habits? Yogicwisdom says we should not take on theseNew Year's attempts to change ourselves, butinstead we should focus on discovering ourtrue nature. But for true change we needto delve deeper into self-understanding.

Yogis talk about the self, consisting ofKoshas or sheaths. These layers arewhat we connect with as our “self”.These layers can be seen like a set of5 lampshades over a light (the self). Aswe clean off the dust (personality attach-ments) our true self becomes more clear.

The first layer is the Annamaya Kosha or physicalbody. We may spend most of our spiritual time on

this one. It is the primal instincts: food, sex, sleepand self-preservation. As yogis we must work to

bring balance to our diet, sleep, cleansing prac-tices and physical activity. We do not wantthese instincts to control us.

The following Kosha is Pranamaya Koshaor energy levels. If you have ever felt a re-

lease in a yoga class you begin to feel thepower of what is inside this level. The

quality of everyday breathing is veryimportant and can lead to an innerstate of balance. In this layer, wework with energy levels, pain andstress.

The next three Koshas are the ones ofthe mind and require us to use medita-

tion techniques. Manomaya Kosha orthoughts and emotions, involves making mental

associations, bringing memories into awarenessand receiving sense impressions. Next time you are lying infinal relaxation in your yoga class notice your thoughts.

Vignanamaya Kosha is the level of memories. This is the levelwhere we discriminate our thoughts and apply wisdom. Youmay know someone with a good sense of “street smarts”. Yogissay that we can all have access to this decision making from aplace that is more in tune with the world around us.

Anandamaya Kosha is the level of Bliss/happiness. After ayoga class have you ever felt a sense of peace and contentment?Often it does not last beyond the parking lot. The more youpractice properly however, the brighter this understanding be-comes. This is not “the self” but another layer, as a sense of blisswould also give rise to its opposite: a sense of pain. The innerlight within us is beyond this duality.

Finally we have moved inward to the self. Only with very ded-icated practice can one achieve this understanding. Sages de-scribe it as “sat” or truth, bringing the self beyondimpermanence. Enlightenment. Why not use this winter to un-dertake a challenge to allow you to recognize the habits thatmake up your layers. You do not need full enlightenment to re-ceive the benefits. Starting this process you will notice changesin yourself. Try 30 or 60 consecutive days of yoga practice.Begin a meditation practice. The key is to recognize then pushthe boundaries of your comfortable habits to realize they are notthe only you. Never mind the resolutions, get out your featherduster and see the true beauty within you this winter.

Pilgrimage as an internal process and / or physical journey to sacredspaces and places, begins with a longing; a silent, deep unremittingyearning of the soul; a keening of heart for healing; a pull for balanceand harmony seeking peace within “self”. If you are selfless and bound by the needs of others it can be difficultto acknowledge or consider this longing, let alone make time andspace to respond. Striving to make life joyful and meaningful foreveryone else, you may engage in self criticism and wonder whyyour life feels lacking. You may even be silently challenged with de-spondency or episodes of depression or spiritual distress. This is notto say that everyone needs to pack a bag and travel off to places un-known to relieve their inner darkness. With longing, this sense of“stuck-ness” may trigger indescribable searching for an elusive pathto authenticity. It may present itself as a spiritual prodding of the“self” brought on by a frayed, strained or absent connection to DivineSource, Spirit or Oneness with Life.

“The Call” is a knowing on some level of your being, your “internalhearing response” to longing, an invitation to mystery, the title foran adventure of the soul, an embracing of the unknown within. Morethan that, it is your place of beginning, a direction for imagined for-ward movement and direct dialogue with your inner self and Spirit,however that is for you. Acknowledging the call is the first step outof inertia and into action although understanding may be slow to fol-low.

My longing and call to pilgrimage came after a period of grief fol-lowing the death of my mother in 2006. The sometimes unconsciouslonging, comes when we feel emptiness, loss of a part of ourselves,an incompleteness or lack of esteem. This loss of part of ourselvescan follow the loss of a loved one to death or divorce, a change in asignificant relationship, role, work, life transition or simply a recog-nition that “there is more” to growing a meaningful, fulfilling lifeand reaching your full potential.

Most Canadians are immigrants. I’m an Anglo-Australian. Uninten-tionally my UK pilgrimages answered a call to reclaim myself

through ancestral roots. I was surprised by the profound re-sponse to the land from the deepest part of my being. Is thispast lifetimes or ancestral memories? If I can have eye and haircolour from generations back, then why can I not also have thefeelings and memories of my ancient grandmothers and theirancient landscapes within my DNA? Understanding pilgrimagetakes time and self evaluation more than books, although read-ing other peoples accounts of pilgrimage has assisted me greatlyin my own articulating attempts and evolving wholeness.

Releasing Old Programs

We are in the midst of a quickening. Our developmental stagesare happening so quickly now that there is not a lot of time to re-flect. As soon as we have a grasp on whatever new lesson hasjust been received or transition that has just been made...we areup and onto the next.

There is no down-time because the energy that is coming to ourplanet is increasing to its precipice. The cosmic light waves thatare hitting out planet now are so full of information that our bod-ies and minds must work hard to keep up. With every downloadof this light information that we receive, we have to shift in orderto maintain its original pattern. Like a computer receiving newsoftware updates (light information) we have to increase ourspace for data within, and we do this by unloading unused or un-wanted "programs".

In order to release these programs (old memories, regrets, stories,fears, habits, etc) from our system, we have to release them on acellular level. Our "programs" or stories attach themselves to ourcellular structure, and become a part of our operating system.When there is no use for them anymore, the stories and emotionsthemselves begin to surface in order to be released. The pain andfears that are linked to these stories all of a sudden rise up intoour conscious awareness, and we abruptly feel different. Thereis then a change in the way we are thinking and the way that wesee the world around us.

It can be very uncomfortable to experience emotions that seemto have no real place in our present lives. They come up unan-nounced and disrupt our perceived progress. But the way throughthis is to NOT re-attach to these stories and emotions by replayingthem over and over, but to recognize that they are just energy inthe midst of release. As the emotions, memories and storiesflicker through our hearts and minds, it is important to allow therelease and to LET GO. We can help ourselves by honoring the"programs" for what they taught us, then letting go of what nolonger serves us because we are different now. As our cells makeroom for more light information, and our old stories continue todisappear, we will make faster personal transitions and evolu-tionary leaps.

We can take the necessary moments we need to look within

and discern what is really happening in our hearts. It is not

as crazy as it may feel; it is actually a very natural process.

We are all becoming who we are meant to be - who we already

are and always have been.

I have been teaching Pilates for over ten years now and still thenumber one reason clients come to my studio is back pain. Formany, their back pain is hard to pinpoint as it affects multiple areasof their back and the onset of symptoms varies. Sometimes a di-agnosis has been given and sometimes it remains a mystery. Allthey know is, it just hurts!

Chronic back pain has many causes but it could be as simple aspoor postural alignment. Our bodies were not meant to be hunchedover a computer all day, bent over while picking up heavy objects,or doing small repetitive tasks that habitually overuse some mus-cles while under using others.

All of these repetitive patterns create imbalances throughout ourbodies that actually affect the way we move day to day and virtu-ally change our alignment. Improper alignment leads to poor pos-ture, increased stress on joints, and ultimately to pain. The goodnews is: with Pilates, proper alignment can be re-learned!

In Pilates we start simply with body awareness. Consider sittingin a chair for longer than 10 minutes, what starts to happen? Yougo from sitting up tall to slumped down, with your pelvis tuckedunder and lower back pressed into the chair. This tucking of thelow back affects all the way up the spine, your shoulders start toslouch, and finally your head juts forward to keep your eyes onyour work. If this posture is done habitually the body starts to takethat shape permanently.

Pilates pinpoints these postural deviations and helps participantsdiscover their correct or “neutral” alignment. Relearning thebody’s neutral position is imperative because it is the optimalposition for the body to function. When the body is in the correctposition, the right muscles fire or the proper “turning-on” of themuscles is achieved. For back pain sufferers a lot of the timetheir deep core is not firing properly simply because of the po-sition of their pelvis.

Once participants learn neutral body awareness, Pilates exerciseschallenge and strengthen the muscles needed to maintain thisposture. Through consistent, repetitive moves that reinforcealignment Pilates begins to re-wire the body to follow a moreoptimal pattern of movement. Previously overused muscles be-come more flexible and elongated and underused muscles be-come toned and stronger. Your deep core starts firing, postureimproves and tension is lessened. This is the “magic” of Pilates.Pilates simply brings you back to how your body should func-tion, naturally, and pain free.

“Live the life you were meant to live”

Since becoming chiropractors, my wife (Dr. Lisa) and I have al-ways visualized helping pregnant women, children and familiesexperience healthier and happier lives through wellness chiro-practic care. Once we started in practice, some of the most com-mon responses we hear are “I had no idea that chiropractic carecould help with that.” “I was told this is normal and it may stopwith time”. The reality is simply most people aren’t aware thatthe benefits of chiropractic care extend well beyond neck pain,back pain or headaches.

The “nerve first” approach

The spine houses the nervous system, the brain, spinal cord, andspinal nerves which connect the brain to every cell tissue andorgan in the body. The nervous system controls and coordinateshow our bodies grow, heal, and adapt. If there is any interferencewith the nervous system the ability to conduct business as usualis diminished, and symptoms can occur. Chiropractors, througha series of specific spinal adjustments, can help to remove in-terference with the nervous system allowing the body to functionat a higher level.

Why guess when we can measure?

To see if you or your child has nerve interference, chiropractorscan use technologies to safely assess how the spine and nervoussystem are functioning together as a unit. The first assessmentwill then be used as a baseline, which can be compared to futurescans to determine how you or your child is responding to care.

Chiropractic and pregnancy

The pregnant mother’s body is in a continual state of adaptationas it prepares to bring a new life into the world. As the preg-nancy progresses, the body releases a cascade of hormones thatwill create laxity in the joints of the mother’s body allowing thepelvis to relax. Once relaxed, the birth canal can open makinga safe passage for the baby and healthy vaginal birth possible.Unfortunately, this may allow the pelvis to twist which can cre-ate low back, pelvic and pubic bone pain [1] as well as a narrowedbirth canal, setting the stage for birth interventions and more in-vasive methods of delivery[2].

That is why it is so important for mothers to make sure that theirpelvis is in proper alignment, and the nervous system is func-tioning at its best to help ensure they will have the best chancesof a healthy natural pregnancy.

Pediatric chiropractic care

A recent study showed that 80% of births which required inter-vention by a doctor (excessive force, vacuum, or forceps meth-ods) resulted in upper cervical injuries [3]. This is why it isimportant to get your baby’s spine and nervous system checkedby a chiropractor trained to assess and adjust children. Infantscan be adjusted right after birth, or as early as possible. Oncenervous system function is restored, injury caused from thebirthing process can begin to heal properly.

Possible symptoms and conditions chiropractic can help withADD/ADHD, asthma, birth traumas, bed wetting, colic, consti-pation, coordination problems, ear infections, feeding difficul-ties, general well-being, headaches, sleeping difficulties [2, 3, 4].

How do chiropractors adjust babies and children?

The answer: very gently. Very little force is required to make aspecific spinal adjustment to a baby as their spines are still de-veloping, and they do not have years of poor posture and gravityworking against them. Chiropractors who are trained to adjustinfants and children use safe, effective, and very gentle adjustingtechniques.

Massage has for many years been used to support thehealth and wellness of an individual. Athletes regu-larly seek out massage to relieve pain and promotequick recovery to sore muscles. Individuals with chronic pain often reportthat long-term massage helps to reduce their pain. Recently, Dr. MarkTarnopolsky and other Canadian researchers at McMaster University inHamilton found evidence at the cellular level that massage blunts musclepain in a similar way to anti-inflammatory pills. It is possible that massagecould also help the elderly, those suffering from musculoskeletal injuries,those suffering from depression or the winter blahs, and people with chronicinflammatory disease. Further research and testing in this area is increasing.Most importantly, massage just plain feels good.

There are many different kinds of massage, and one that goes back to theancient traditions of the Hawaiian people is Lomi Lomi massage. ManaLomi is a form of Lomi Lomi and is indigenous Hawaiian mind-body-spirithealing massage with a philosophical foundation in the relationship betweenpeople and all natural things. Dr. Maka’ala Yates, an indigenous Hawaiianmedicine practitioner, developed it. He learned from his elders in Kona,Hawaii and apprenticed for 16 years with Auntie Margaret Machado, arevered Lomi Master.

Mana Lomi is done with bone deep, yet gentle touch. It has been called“Hawaiian Spiritual Massage” or “Life-force of Lomi.” According to Dr.Maka’ala, Lomi or Lomilomi describes a concept that involves the move-ment of energy. His web site, http://www.alohalomiacademy.com/mana-lomi/, states that “the concept of ‘communicating down to the bones’physically and energetically is significant. It gives room for the client toallow the practitioner to go as deep as they can tolerate, yet be non-invasivewhile achieving the desired outcome.”

The bone deep and penetrating muscle specific massage is gentle and prac-titioners use their body weight and mana (life energy). The therapy can beused for treatment work in a medical setting as well as for relaxation orhealth maintenance massage. Modest draping is always used.

In the 1800’s, the traditional people of Hawaii were forced to go under-ground to practice Lomi Lomi, which was considered by the missionariesand new government to be “sorcery.” It is now receiving more attention,and Kathy Richins (who was born in Hawaii) is bringing this relaxation andwellness massage to Kamloops after training at the Ho’omana Spa in Mauiwith Jeana Iwalani Naluai last year. Jeana states on her web site: “From aHawaiian Perspective, our back bone is a symbol of an ancestral connectionand the stability offered as a result of ancestral support. Problem: Each day our thoughts presentus with an opportunity to be anxious.Often we feel anxiety and worry abouta particular part of ourselvesand/or our sport or business.Often we feel powerless tocontrol this anxiety. In this arti-cle, we learn how to not only takeback the power, but also to use theanxiety to our own advantage. From here we can start to makea huge difference to our day to day lives and to use anxiety toour advantage. The key here is what goes on in the mind, andis a challenge many of the sports professionals and businessexecutives I work with have come up against.

Education: The answer to almost every mental challengefaced by us all is hidden in the subconscious mind. This is thepart of the mind that is very powerful, and is far less easy tocommunicate directly with than the conscious mind. Withtraining, this becomes easier.

My Tip: I advise you to be aware that anxiety is a poke fromthe unconscious mind that it is time to focus on what you DOwant. When we take a look at what is happening when we areanxious, we find that we are focusing on what we DON’T wantwith our thoughts. So if an athlete is anxious about his per-formance – guess what their subconscious mind is going tooffer up? – Yep you’ve guessed it – examples of poor per-formance!

Learning: Here’s the learning folks – USE ANXIETY AS A

TOOL. Becoming anxious tells you categorically to changeyour focus to the positive. If you have a competition or impor-tant event coming up and you feel uneasy, gently refocus on apositive outcome. Do this each and every single time an anx-ious thought comes up for you. It will take repetition. Everynew movement does. This will be you training your “memorymuscle”.

It’s the same in life and work as in sport. Daily I check in withmy own thoughts. Often the first sign I have that my thoughtsare not optimum is when I realize I feel uncomfortable or un-easy. As soon as I realize that’s happening I know I have al-lowed my mind to wander to thoughts that bring me nosuccess.

I am always excited to welcome a New Year and as I write thisarticle we are just welcoming 2013. I have been asked manytimes, what do I feel that this year will bring for humanity? Thereare so many possibilities, but what I see and what I know is thatthe biggest changes will be in the heart chakra. As we move intoa new energetic era, it may almost seem as if there is a require-ment to open your heart more fully. We are moving into a timewhere each of us will need more nurturing energy, a softer, gentlerapproach as we speak to ourselves and to each person and situa-tion we encounter. I feel that right now there has never been abetter or a more important time to awaken to the song of yourheart, your authentic state of being; your Divine self.

When we feel fear, stress, worry, anger, guilt, hopeless, power-less, any of those negative emotions, we are not tuned into ourDivine and Holy self. When you are feeling and operatingthrough your life with these thoughts and feelings, it is like analarm clock alerting you to the fact that something in your life isnot working for you. Allow yourself to explore the possibilitythat there may be an easier way to navigate the waters of life; inessence, there is an easier way to flow. Are you living your lifebeing true to who you really are? Do you experience joy on adaily basis? Do you do the things that bring you joy? Do youeven know what brings you joy? These are just some of the im-portant questions that we can ask ourselves to get closer to whowe really are, but so many people spend more time worryingabout responsibilities, finances, time constraints, the opinions ofothers and a contingency of distractions rather than spending timeexploring their soul.

When you begin to explore your Divine self, the authenticity ofyour soul, you will naturally begin to feel more empowered.There are times within our world that we can feel powerless ordeeply fearful and it is in those times that we are experiencing

separation from our Divine self, from our source energy and fromeach other. We were not placed here to be separate from one an-other or to believe in the mentality of “survival of the fittest.”We were placed here to work together, to cooperate harmo-niously and for each of us to be our authentic peaceful and lovingDivine selves. The more that you open your heart, be gentle withyourselves, with everyone you meet, you are opening your heartand extending love. That is your purpose, to help expand theuniverse with love. Every time that you love what you are doing,every time you laugh, smile, hug, share, meditate, dance, sing,spend time in nature, you are opening your heart chakra. Whenyou do this, shifts within your perception occur and you will findthat miracles begin happening all around you.

When you extend love, you are incredibly powerful. Never un-derestimate the power of your heart. As you extend love, as Iextend love, as your neighbours extend love, together we willcreate the changes that we wish to see. May you follow yourheart and find joy in the moment, Happy New Year!

Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy (MBAT) is a new form of therapy that com-bines Mindfulness based Counselling and Art Therapy together. The field ofMindfulness-Based Art Therapy is relatively new, but shows promising resultsin research. Monti et al. (2006) ran a study using Mindfulness-Based Art Ther-apy with breast cancer survivors. This was an 8-week program that combinedmindfulness based meditation with supportive group art therapy. They foundthat as compared to the control group, those who experienced art therapyshowed decrease in distress and increase in quality of life. In my personal andprofessional experience practicing mindfulness and art together opens pathwaysto creativity and relaxation and fosters feelings of integration and wholeness.

Jon-Kabat Zinn, a well known doctor and author of several books on Mindful-ness has helped a great number of people with his mindfulness-based stress re-duction programs. He states “Practicing Mindfulness is… “To simply “dropin” on the actuality of your lived experience and then to sustain it as best asyou can moment by moment, with intentional openhearted presence and sus-pension of judgment and distraction” (Kabat-Zinn, 2003). He identifies the 7key attitudes of mindfulness as: non-judging, patience, beginner’s mind, trust,non-striving, acceptance, and letting go.

Art Therapy is a form of therapy that enables people to explore thoughts andfeelings and achieve insight through creative expression. The focus in a sessionis on the creative process, rather than on producing a creative product. As theart therapist I hold a non-judgmental and accepting attitude toward all imagesthat arise. There are no “wrong” images. I provide guidance and make sugges-tions as we explore and inquire into the artwork, but ultimately my view is thatthe client is the expert on the meaning of his or her artwork. Some Art Therapyactivities include collage with magazine images and photographs, visualgenograms and timelines, mandalas, doll-making, mask-making and creativejournaling. No special art training or skills are necessary!

In the past ten years of training and working with people as an ArtTherapist mindfulness and healing through art have become integralaspects of my life. I have found these practices to be most beneficialin staying centered and grounded through life’s challenges and alsoin increasing joy and creativity in my life. It is my passion to sharewhat I have learned with others and to learn from others who arehealing and working through difficulties in their lives. Practicingart by its nature allows us to be in the moment. When painting I amcompletely focused on the task at hand, enraptured by colour, formand movement. I am lost in the process, not worried about time, mynext meeting, my grocery list, the needs of my family, or the clean-liness of my house. All of these things are important, but practicingart allows me to focus on the moment, and be with what is, ratherthan being lost in my “monkey brain”. Practicing art and mindful-ness is something that people can do on their own, outside of theframe of therapy.

Here are some ideas to bring art and mindfulness together

Meditation: Before sitting down to make art, practice a “breathinginto the belly” exercise for 5-15 minutes. Just bring your awarenessinto your belly and breathe into this area of the body. Let the bellybe soft and focus on the rising and falling of the belly as youbreathe. If you get distracted do not worry, be gentle with yourself,let go of the thoughts and return your focus to the breath.

1. Pick up a string (about 3 feet long) and dip it in either black indiaink or watered-down acrylic black paint. Holding the tip of thestring in your hand let the ink-covered end make patterns across apiece of paper by jumping it up and down and pulling it across thepage. Next, take a paintbrush and dip it into a watercolor paintpalette and start to fill in the shapes that you notice within the blackstring marks on the page. No special skills are needed and you cancreate a beautiful abstract image.

2. Try painting to relaxing, meditative music, such as the sound ofTibetan singing bowls (there is a lot of free meditation music onYouTube!). Create images that resonate with the sound of the music.Choose colours that fit with the sounds you are hearing. Just moveyour hand to the music, and simply paint whatever comes to you.Do not worry about “creating a picture”, just allow the sounds tocarry you through the process.

3. Have a stack of magazines beside you and go through them, cut-ting or ripping out images and words that interest you. Do not getdistracted by reading the magazine, just go through the images andwords, choosing what you like and putting them aside. When youhave chosen your images create a collage on paper, putting themtogether and gluing them down with a glue stick in a way that youlike. You may not use all the images… you can put the others awayfor another collage.

Most of these supplies you can get at a dollar store, drug store, orarts and crafts store. You can use basic, non-expensive art supplies.Remember not to worry about the outcome, be gentle with yourselfand try to let go of self-judgment as it comes up. Remember espe-cially to allow yourself to play!

Live the life you’ve always imagined…I’ve been saying and pro-moting these words for several years and only today did I actuallyrealize their meaning. Isn’t it weird how we think we know andbelieve something but the truth is that we often are a lot of talkand little action?

I will admit I’m guilty of this, but not because the intention waswrong. Simply because I thought I got it and I didn’t really getit at all, until now. Like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,today I took a leap of faith. When I boiled all my feelings ofstress and dissatisfaction down I concluded that there are twothings I really want in life right now: to feel financially free andto work a job with heartfelt purpose.

Now, let’s be realistic, we all have to make choices, we can’t al-ways have everything right now. So I did the math and deter-mined that in order to have both dreams come to fruition I wouldneed to work 70+ hours a week between two jobs for the nexttwo years. To me, this grim reality felt like extreme pain. I don’twant to live my life this way and thus I became conscious to thefact that I had to choose a path when faced at a fork in the road.I promote balance through mind, body and spirit wellness. Andafter this mathematics equation I understood that I’m an offenderof what I actually promote.

And so I asked myself: do I make the rational financial choice tostay at both jobs or do I throw caution to the wind and take thatleap of faith? I had to sincerely ask myself what is “Live the LifeI’ve Always Imagined”? For me, I want to do work that is mean-ingful to myself and others. I want to be healthy in body andmind. I want to nourish my spirit. I want to have fun and feelhappiness, peace and joy daily.

Winter months can be dark, cold, and long, and thereare practices that can support us through thesemonths, keeping us in good balance energeticallyand mentally. When we are in balance we’re happyand we feel contented. Winter’s energy can tend tomake us more inward than in the summer. Thisgoing-inside season is a quieter time and can be oneof the most wonderful and delicious times of the yearwhen we know how to savor the sweet bliss of ourinner silence and peace. This quiet time can, how-ever, feel unfamiliar and even unpleasant. In the still-ness of winter, old latent agitations can arise fromthe memory. Year after year these feeling can get as-sociated with wintertime and then winter doesn’tseem like a pleasant, delightful time of stillness andpeace, but rather becomes heavy with depression.

Traditionally, we have celebrations in winter tolighten our spirits and bring light to the dark times.We can get so excited about combating the winter,and celebrating to make ourselves happy, that thesecelebrations become anxious times. Now we are ina pattern of swinging from depression to anxietythroughout the winter, trying to combat the blues bygetting hyped up, then crashing from the hype andfalling again into sadness.

It’s possible to get our balance back through the win-ter by adopting a practice of meditation. Meditationmakes the peaceful, quiet space of stillness a familiarand enjoyable feeling. It takes time for an imbal-anced nervous system to become accustomed tobeing in balance, to feeling blissful. If we take a littletime each day to simply sit and be at ease in our-selves, this will become more and more anatural feeling. Meditation is a training pro-gram to remind our nervous system how tofeel balanced and steady, easy yet strong,quiet and yet bright at the same time. Still-ness does not mean dullness or lethargy. Inthe deep ease of stillness we connect with aspace of potential and power. We feel theenergy of life in our body, and the clear, ex-panse of awareness of our mind. In the still-

ness of winter, we can re-discover the powerfulspace of inner stillness and train our mind and bodyto love touching this space every day. Winter thenwill not be a time of dull depression or anxious busi-ness. It will be a sacred time of self-communion anda retreat time, with every meditation session beingour own private retreat. This will revitalize and makeus healthier than ever. We’ll start to look forward tothe long, dark winter months as a time of year whenwe get to be silent and still every day.

Set up a place where you can sit in peace everydaywithout being disturbed. Wrap yourself up in a warmshawl and settle in for a lovely sit. Enjoy being stilland deeply at ease. May peace and joy be with you in 2013.

Winter is here, and with it comes a host of potential back

problems. From arthritis problems during changes in

temperature, to slipping on the ice – we have a few tips

here to avoid low back pain and keep you moving

throughout this cold season!

OsteoarthritisSome people report an increase in painful arthritic symptoms withchanges in the weather. As an osteopathic manual practitioner Ibelieve that these should be treated in the same way as any othertime of year! The best was to maintain health in an arthritic jointis to keep it moving around its full range without heavy loadingwith exercises such as swimming, an elliptical trainer, or move-ment classes.

InjuriesWinter can be a time with many potential hazards for your back.It’s always best to slow down a bit in winter to avoid slips and fallson ice, but often people can fail to realise how physically strenuousactivities like shovelling snow can be on the body. Often whenpeople do this they flex forward with their back, load up the shovelthen quickly extend and rotate away to throw off the snow. Theseare some of the worst movements that the discs in between yourlower vertebra can have! If you damage your discs it can oftencome with neurological symptoms such as pain, numbness andeven weakness into one or both legs. If you feel symptoms in bothlegs you should seek immediate medical attention, however evensymptoms in one leg can be quite debilitating. These injuries canhowever be avoided in several ways.

1. Warm up! You probably think it’s common sense to warm up forsports – however activities like lifting snow (especiallyfirst thing in the morning) can be even harder on yourbody. Start with a stretching regime to warm up yourmuscles. Do these for both sides and try to hold eachstretch for around 15 seconds. It should feel tight butNOT PAINFUL.

2. Lift with the legsIf possible, push snow away rather than lifting it. Whenyou have to lift it, bend at the knees. The legs are muchbetter built to deal with lifting than the back alone. Whenlifting, keep your feet hip width apart and if you need toturn to dump the snow turn your whole body with yourlegs as well, not just a quick twist from the spine.

3. Stay hydratedIt is easy to remember to drink when its 35 degrees out-side, but it’s still important to keep hydrated during win-ter. This keeps your whole body working better,especially with regards to back pain – where the discsbetween vertebra are larger and can transfer weight moreefficiently when hydrated.

4. Stay active.People will start to wind down in the winter. Cars replacewalking short distances, and people stop sports theywould have done in summer. This decrease in activitymeans that muscles will begin to weaken and be less pre-pared to protect the body. By staying as active as possi-ble you can help prevent injury.

“It's about the connection,” Brittanya explains. “You can connect with your-self, the horse, and the nature all around you.” Brittanya Beddington is apractitioner of horse yoga, a practice that encompasses the individual, theanimal, the environment, and the physical and meditative aspects of yoga.

Horse yoga starts with a practitioner meeting an equine partner and estab-lishing a level of comfort and trust while grooming or walking beside them.In a world where many people feel dis-empowered by their circumstances,interactions with a horse can provide an emotional mirror. “It's a great wayfor people to get a read of themselves,” Brittanya says, explaining that ahorse will pick up a person’s emotions. It is best to leave behind any negativeenergy, breathe deeply and get centered prior to starting a horse yoga session.Setting an intention is equally important as horses are apt interpreters of in-tention.

Once a person is able to interact calmly and confidently around the horse,Brittanya suggests moving on with a ground practice. Yoga poses are prac-ticed standing next to the horse or using it as a balance. A connection of trustis formed as the horse becomes a willing physical support. The horses oftenenjoy the practice, licking their lips or yawning, an equine sign of relaxationand release.

Once a yogi is comfortable practicing beside and connecting with the horse,he or she can choose to further the practice on horseback while the horsestands with someone holding the lead line. “Some people are never goingto want to get on the horse,” Brittanya comments, “but doing yoga whiletouching and breathing in the moment with the horse is a release all by it-self.”

She emphasizes that there is no pressure. It's not about standing on a horseor doing a downward dog on its haunches. The point is wellness, gratitudeand love. In fact, Brittanya doesn't feel that being an experienced yoga prac-titioner is vital to having a transformative experience.

“Even if you can't do poses, or can only do the variations, or are only juststarting to intend to do the poses,” she explains, “you're still doing yoga.Yoga isn't a perfected thing, that’s why it's called a practice.”

For those passionate about yoga, but with no equine experience, trying horseyoga offers an opportunity to bring their practice to the next level. For thosewho have horse experience, horse yoga offers a way of intensifying an ex-isting bond. The best reason to try horse yoga? “Bliss,” Brittanya laughs.

“It's an amazing experience for anyone who loves nature, yoga, or horses.”

For anyone who has access to a safe horse and wantsto try horse yoga, here are some helpful hints.

1) Set your intention, check your negativity and nerv-ousness at the gate, and breathe deeply.

2) Have someone hold your haltered horse as yougroom.

3) Proceed next to the horse, stand at the horse's shoul-der and center yourself. Focus on your breath and feel-ing the horse's energy beside you. Feel free to put ahand on your horse's side.

4) With one hand on the horse for support, move intoa tree pose. Try warrior one and two or a crescentlunge. Make sure that every pose you do on one sideyou do on the other as well. Keep up your breath, tuneyourself into the horse's breath. Notice if he releasesand relaxes, he may fall asleep!

5) If you are a confident rider and feel ready, mountyour horse and take a moment to reconnect. Place yourhands behind you and lay back across your horse'sback, hands stretching over your head. Feel the breathbeneath you and open your eyes to the sky. Enjoy!

At every moment, we can see in our world beauty or ugliness,peace or strife, good or bad, health or disease. They are alwaysintermingled. All of Life is a web of interconnectedness and there is onlyone Life in which we all partake.

Most of the time, most of us have circumstances or experiences in ourlives that we don’t like and can’t seem to fix. Many of us labour underthe delusion that all our problems would disappear and the world wouldbe all fixed up if only everybody would do things our way.

The world can’t be fixed; it is not broken. The world is exactly the wayit should be; it cannot be any other way. It is true that our choices affectthe way the world will be in the future and it is true that when we changeour thinking, we change our experience of life. As Dr. Wayne Dyerteaches, “when we change the way we look at things, the things we lookat change.” But in this very moment of Now, things are exactly the waythey are and they cannot now be any way but the way they are. Peacecomes from aligning ourselves with the perfection of this moment, fromsurrendering into that perfection. But surrender does not mean givingup, for in the very next moment of now and the next moment of nowand the next moment of now, we have choices. And the choices thatyou and I make create our individual and mutual experiences. Life is aforever unfolding kaleidoscope of choices – beauty or ugliness, peaceor strife, health or disease, good or bad. Which will we choose?

Our choices create our reality. But is reality the same for everyone?Not everyone sees beauty in the same things. Some folks are quitepeaceful in the midst of what others call turmoil. We have a powerfultool to assist us to experience peace in the midst of turmoil, to see beautyamongst the ugliness, to know health within the very disease. That tool?Perception. It really is all up to me.

That’s what our Kosmic Kaleidoscope conference is all about – chang-ing our reality by changing our perceptions and raising our conscious-ness.
