Building Paper London

Big Ben

Universally known by its popular nickname, Big Ben is technically “St. Stephen’s Tower” , but takes its more familiar title from its largest bell, which was cast in the 1850s, weighs nearly 14 tons, and is itself named after Benjamin Caunt, a heavyweight boxer of the mid-nineteenth century. If there’s a single London icon that is recognized all over the world, this is it—it is believed to have taken a supporting (landscape) role in over half a million movies!

■ Begin with the statue of Prometheus, Rockefeller 1. Using a sharp craft knife and a metal straightedge (to steady the blade), cut out the shaded areas around the fl ames Prometheus is holding. Fold and attach the sash, Rockefeller 2, to the front and back of Prometheus.

■ Slightly curve Rockefeller 3 by rolling it gently over a round pencil or dowel. Glue the center tab to the back so that the gray semicircles form a circle. Attach Prometheus to the gray circle on the completed Rockefeller 3. When dry, glue the whole section to the base, Rockefeller 4.

■ Gently fold the three pairs of skaters, Rockefeller 5–7, toward you, bending them just a bit where they hold hands. With a whisper of glue on the bottom edges of their skates, attach the pairs to their corresponding marks on the rink. The mother and child are front and center, the couple is to the left, and the two sisters are to the right. After you’ve spent an hour on the ice, take a break, sip a cup of hot chocolate, and rest up for more fi gure eights.

Tower Bridge

The original telephone kiosk was designed, like so many other London landmarks, by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. His original design is exceptionally scarce now; this, the more familiar model that still survives on many street corners in Central London, is the unromantically named K6, introduced in 1935.

■ You may build this model as is, or you may add more detail by cutting out the dark gray spaces between the coaster’s girders. (See page 7 for more details.)

■ The Cyclone requires plenty of concentrated gluing; don’t build this one fi rst.

■ Begin by rounding out Cyclone 1 and 2 to form the curved sections at each end. Glue Cyclone 2 to Cyclone 1, overlapping the ends of 2 onto the light gray glue areas of 1. Let dry. Notice the small gray dot at the top of Cyclone 2. This is one end of the coaster. Continue to round this end out until it forms a near semicircle. The opposite end of the coaster needs to be formed similarly. Refer to Cyclone 3 to see how curved to make the sides. That is, gently form the base so that it generally matches the footprint of Cyclone 3.

■ Attach Cyclone 3 to the base. Begin by lining up the gray dots on pieces 2 and 3. Work slowly and carefully, gluing only a few tabs at a time.

Nelson’s Column

Love it or hate it, you can’t ignore it—the tower that characterizes Canary Wharf still holds its place as the tallest building in London, though it’s due to be overtaken by two other contenders by late 2012. Blockish, vast, and rather charmless by day, it undergoes a transformation at night when, brightly lit, it makes an impressive beacon on the east London skyline.

■ Begin by cutting off the pointed ends of a toothpick so that it matches the length of the printed guide. This will become the umbrella’s support.

■ Using a pin, poke two holes into the small circles on the top and bottom of Cart 1 and widen them, as necessary, with a pointed toothpick so that the umbrella support passes snugly through them. Remove the toothpick and set aside.

■ Glue Cart 1 together. Attach Cart 2. Slide the trimmed toothpick through the top and bottom of the cart.

■ Glue Cart 3 together. When dry, put a drop of glue on the top of the toothpick and place Cart 3 gently on top. Order a can of soda and a large hot dog with “the works” from your cart. Bon appetit!

Tower of London

a simple zebra crossing that became iconic when the Beatles walked over it en route to their abbey road recording studio—and the photograph made it onto their 1969 album cover. The rest is history, but the crossing still exists, and re-enactments are posed by visitors to the capital every day, making this a route particularly unpopular with London taxi drivers. ■ It is best to build this model of the tower from the Woolworth Building from the bottom up, in numerical order (Woolworth 1–4). This is a straightforward model—the only detail you must be sure to observe is the dashed lines (valley folds) on Woolworth 5 and score accordingly. (See general building notes.) These “wings” are glued back-to-back, to each other, to form decorative buttresses (see detail).

■ Using a sharp craft knife and a metal straightedge (to steady the blade), cut out the shaded areas at the top of Woolworth 7. This last piece fi ts snugly around the spire, Woolworth 6, like a necklace. Enjoy the splendor of this nearly one hundred-year-old building, one of the world’s original skyscrapers.

Tate Modern

Who would have thought that a defunct power station in the Brutalist tradition would have so much art in it?The disused Bankside power Station, completed in 1963, but closed from 1981, acquired its new lease of life when the Tate Gallery took an option on the site in 1994. Six years later the new Tate Modern Gallery, with astonishing interiors designed by the up-and-coming Swiss architectural practice Herzog & de Meuron, opened to universal acclaim, and has since become one of London's most visited attractions.

■ Assemble United Nations 1 and adhere to base, United Nations 2.

■ Assemble United Nations 3. The roof has a slight curve to it so round it ever so slightly with a dowel or round pencil. Put aside.

■ Assemble the building’s distinctive dome, United Nations 4 and 5. Attach this assembled section to the roof of United Nations 3. It is important to line up the small gray dot on the side of piece 4 with the dot on the roof of United Nations 3 so that the roof of the dome is fl at.

■ Adhere the completed building to the base. Enter the Plaza and witness the United Nations working toward international peace.

Abbey Road

Originally built in the 13th century, but augmented and altered for over fi ve centuries after, Westminster abbey has overseen hundreds of historic moments, from the coronations of the British monarchs to services of thanksgiving and funerals of numerous great statesmen and poiliticians.

■ Begin with the facade, St. Patrick’s 1. Fold the ends, as indicated in the diagram, to create the two towers. Fold the platforms at the tops of the towers and glue them into place, then glue sides A and B to the back of the facade. Set aside.

■ Assemble St. Patrick’s 2. Attach piece 1 to 2, as indicated in the detailed drawing.

■ Fold and glue St. Patrick’s 3 and 4 to create octagonal towers.

■ Fold and glue St. Patrick’s 5 and 6 to create their cones. Apply glue to the tabs of St. Patrick’s 5 and slide up and into St. Patrick’s 3, as shown in the illustration. Stop where indicated, just before pulling the cone out of the base. Reach in with tweezers to squeeze the tabs fi rmly. Repeat with St. Patrick’s 4 and 6.

■ Put a thin bead of glue on the bottom edges of St. Patrick’s 3 and 4 and gently attach them where indicated on the platforms on St. Patrick’s 1. Amen.

The archer is a rough, outdoors kind of feltie, never happier than when he’s firing arrows out in the wide-open spaces. Stitch for yourself—he won’t be impressed with exquisitely tiny threadwork when he could be free, finished, and out galloping across the night sky…

YOU WILL NEED• 4-in. (10-cm) square of gray felt

• 3-in. (7.5-cm) square of brown felt

• 1 in. x 2 in. (2.5 cm x 5 cm) piece of light green felt

• Small scrap of black felt

• Embroidery floss in yellow, white, bronze, lilac, gray, and light green

• 3-in. (7.5-cm) length of yellow ribbon, ¾ in. (8 mm) wide

• 18 lilac seed beads

• 1 embossed 5-pointed silver star sequin

• 2 embroidery needles (for arrow shafts)

• Tiny quantity of toy stuffing

• Pencil and tracing paper

• Trick marker

• Scissors

• Embroidery needle (to sew with)

• Beading needle

• Latex glue

• Superglue

• Matchstick or tweezers

stuffing and a matchstick or tweezers to help you. Stitch the rest of the hair shut, leaving the green face piece open.

5 Cut a 3¼-inch (8-cm) length of white floss (use all six strands) and sew it around the neck of

one body piece using an embroidery needle threaded with one strand of white floss and working small stitches across it at even intervals. Take the lower end around the body back and stitch in place (leave the upper end loose, as it will be covered when the face is stitched to the body).

6 Stick the tail on the wrong side of the body, then spread the wrong sides of both body

pieces with a thin layer of latex glue, leave for a moment, and align and press together.

7 Trim two points from the star sequin to make arrowheads. Lay them convex-side down, dot

superglue onto the heads of the two embroidery needles, and stick on the arrowheads. Leave to dry.

8 Sew the head back to the body back with a single strand of gray floss and a small

overstitch. Turn the feltie right way up and push wisps of stuffing into the face to pad it evenly. Thread an embroidery needle with one strand of light green floss and stitch the face to the body front with a small overstitch, covering the loose end of the white floss collar. Carefully push the arrows into the body at the right shoulder. Secure at the body edge with a tiny dot of superglue.

1 Cut out all the felt pieces as marked, either photocopying or scanning the templates,

or using tracing paper to make templates as described on page 4. Thread an embroidery needle with one strand of yellow floss and stitch the ribbon across the face with a line of running stitch at each edge. Trim the ends of the ribbon near to sides of the face.

2 Use latex glue to stick on the eye patches. Thread an embroidery needle with two

strands of white floss and sew the white pupils with small areas of satin stitch. Rethread the needle with two strands of bronze floss and stitch two angled stitches with two more facing them to make the nostrils.

3 Thread an embroidery needle with one strand of lilac floss and stitch the hair piece

onto the face with a small overstitch, overlapping the left eye as shown. Thread a beading needle with one strand of lilac floss and stitch on the seed beads in a wavy line. Check their position in the photograph of the finished Archer—they are more widely spaced at the far end of the hair.

4 Thread an embroidery needle with one strand of lilac floss and stitch the front and

the back head pieces together with a small overstitch, starting from the point indicated by the arrow in the illustration. Leave the right side of the hair open and stuff the whole gray hair area, from the side to the floating end, with small wisps of toy

trees hold a special place in our hearts, as symbols of nature’s strength and longevity. this symbolism lends the act of planting a tree a particular significance as the transformation from seed to sapling to fully grown tree draws parallels with our own lives. this beautifully illustrated book celebrates the simple act of planting a tree. it not only explains how to plant and care for a tree, but also explores the symbolism of trees alongside a miscellany of facts about the world’s favorite species. By examining global traditions and ancient rituals, it shows how a variety of suitable species can be used for commemorative tree-planting celebrations.

Soda-Pop Rockets contains 17 different easy-to-launch rockets that can be built from discarded plastic drink bottles, old inner tubes, clothes hangers, and a few plumbing fixtures from the hardware store. Clear step-by-step instructions with full-color illustrations and templates accompany each project, starting out with how to construct a reusable launch pad.

If you’d like to track your rockets’ performance, it even includes instructions on how to build a clinometer to measure their altitudes and trajectories. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to build these projects, but who knows what career path you’ll take after you do?

aBoUt tHe aUtHoR

Paul Jarvis is a full-time engineer and a trained pyrotechnician. Making soda-pop rockets allows him to combine both of these disciplines, with appealingly explosive results. With this book he hopes to show that the art of bottle rocketry needn’t be rocket science.

Move over diet coke and Mentos, the soda-pop bottle has gone ballistic! the rockets in this unique guide will fly up to 90 feet into the sky, propelled by water pressurized with a bicycle pump. after learning how to construct the basic model, you’ll discover new ways to modify and improve the designs with built-on fins, nose cones, cluster bases, and more.

Designs include:

W A Long-Tailed Rocket using a bottle-and- pipe combination

W A Rocket with Nose Cone and Parachute that will return it safely to earth

W A Rocket Car for low-altitude missions

W A long-bodied Five-Bottle Rocket

W A Water-Cooler Rocket of gigantic proportions
