CRIMSON HAWKS A TOP 15 TEAM IN BOTH THE COACHES AND MEDIA POLLSIUP is ranked in the top 25 of both the AFCA Coaches and D2Football.com Media polls for the third straight

week. The Crimson Hawks stayed at No. 9 in the AFCA poll for the second straight week and are ranked No.

13 by D2Football.com.

IUP IS 31-2 IN PSAC WEST OPENERS DATING BACK TO 1983IUP has had incredible success in PSAC West openers dating back to 1983, wining 31 of those 33, including

a 26-game win streak between 1983-2008. The Crimson Hawks’ two PSAC West-opening losses have

come to Mercyhurst in 2009 (20-16) and Slippery Rock in 2011 (20-6). IUP is on a current streak of five

straight PSAC West-opening wins dating back to 2012.

CIGNETTI vs. THE PSAC WESTHC Curt Cignetti is 26-9 (.742) in his five seasons against schools from the PSAC West, including a 6-1

mark in 2012 and 2015. He is 4-1 all-time against Edinboro, including last year’s 42-21 home victory. The

Fighting Scots’ only win over Cignetti was a 36-30 rain-soaked victory in Indiana in 2013.

IUP IS PSAC WEST’s WINNINGEST TEAM SINCE 1986Since 1986, IUP has the most overall wins and divisional wins of any team in the PSAC West. The program

owns an overall record of 257-84-1 (.753) along with a conference record of 152-37-1 (.803) during that

span. IUP clinched a share of the division 2015 division crown, the program’s 16th in 30 years.

CRIMSON HAWKS OFFENSE IS OUT TO A FAST STARTThrough the first two games of their season, the Crimson Hawks rank in the top 20 in each of the four

major off ensive statistical categories. IUP leads the nation in total off ense (623.5 ypg), is second in scoring

(64.0 ppg), fift h in rushing (317.0 ypg), and 19th in passing (306.5 ypg). IUP’s 66.7 3rd down conversion

percentage is second in the country and its 202.5 team passing effi ciency ranks fourth.

IUP’s SPREAD OFFENSE LOOKS TO EVOLVE AND IMPROVE IN YEAR TWOA big reason for IUP’s playoff year in 2015 was the switch from a traditional pro-style off ense to a new

spread scheme under OC Marty Higgins. The Crimson Hawks improved in nearly all areas, and as they head

into the second year of the off ense, they hope to grow the playbook and increase production.

THE BIG PLAYS LOOK TO CONTINUE IN 2016The Crimson Hawks have 14 plays of 20 yards or more through two games this season, including 11 in the

opener at East Stroudsburg. R-So. QB Lenny Williams, Jr. has been responble for eight of those long plays,

all passing, including a 72-yard touchdown toss to Jr. WR Allen Wright, the longest IUP off ensive play since

2008.

IUP is 34-7 UNDER CURT CIGNETTI WHEN A PLAYER RUSHES FOR 100 YARDSIn his five-plus seasons as head coach, Cignetti has a 34-7 record when an IUP player rushes for at least 100

yards in a game, with Fr. RB Samir Bullock going for 104 yards against East Stroudsburg. Bullock is one of

five players on the current roster to have a 100-yard game, and one of 11 players during the Cignetti era to go

over the century mark. Cignetti is also 6-0 when two players top the 100-yard mark, with four of those wins

coming last year.

WALT PEGUES EXTENDS STREAK TO 25 STRAIGHT GAMES WITH A RECEPTIONWith two receptions last week, Jr. WR Walt Pegues extended his consecutive games with a catch streak to

25 straight. That stretch began with his first career game in 2014. For his career, Pegues has 116 receptions

for 1,586 yards and nine touchdowns in 25 games.

PEGUES HAS A KNACK FOR PUTTING UP BIG NUMBERSPegues has established the potential for big numbers any time he takes the field. In the season opener at

East Stroudsburg, he caught 12 passes for 195 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

His best career performance came last year at Slippery Rock, catching 14 passes for 233 yards, with both

marks ranking third in single game IUP history. As a true freshman, Pegues caught 13 passes for 193 yards

and a score against Gannon

NEWCOMER CHRIS WUESTER DEVELOPING INTO A THREAT IN THE PASS GAMEGr. WR Chris Wuestner had a big day at Cheyney, catching eight passes for 169 yards and a touchdown.

He tallied three big plays, catching passes of 50, 36, and 24 yards. Wuestner was a late addition to the IUP

roster, joining the Crimson Hawks a week before their 2016 season opener.

ALL-AMERICAN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN ETHAN COOPER MAKES POSITION CHANGE Sr. OL Ethan Cooper started the season opener as IUP’s right tackle, a change from his usual spot at left

guard. An All-American pick last season, he made his 27th consecutive start last week, which includes 23

straight games at left guard. He’s earned preseason All-American hype this year from The Sporting News

and D2Football.com.

EXPERIENCED OFFENSIVE LINE HAS SOME RESHUFFLING IN 2016Including Cooper’s move, IUP had three new starters along the off ensive line. R-Fr. Jeff Arnold moved into

the starting center position while Sr. Ed Bier took over Cooper’s spot at left guard. Bier has played in 23

career games, including two starts at the end of the 2015 season at center. So. Joe Peterson returned at

left tackle, where he started the last seven games last season, and R-Sr. Tony Morgante returned at right

guard aft er starting 12 games there a season ago.

IUP HAS SCORED 16 DEFENSIVE TOUCHDOWNS SINCE 2011; 42 SINCE 2003Annually one of the PSAC’s - and the nation’s - strongest defenses, IUP has scored 16 total defensive

touchdowns since 2011 and 42 since 2003. IUP didn’t wait long to get its first of 2016, with Jr. DT Jemal Averette returning an interception eight yards for a second quarter score at ESU. In 12 games last season,

the Crimson Hawks scored six defensive touchdowns, including three at Mercyhurst. Not included in that

total was a special teams touchdown, a 34-yard blocked punt return for a score against Cheyney. Last

year’s total was the most IUP has had in a single season since the start of 2003, eclipsing the previous

high of four in 2010, 2009, 2007 and 2003.

CIGNETTI’S START

Curt Cignetti enters his sixth year at the helm of the IUP football program in 2016. Through five seasons, Cignetti has a record of 43-15, going 26-9 in PSAC West play and 3-2 in the NCAA playoff s. He has a record of 23-6 at home and 20-8 on the road. The Crimson Hawks finished the 2015 season ranked No. 19 in the final American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll aft er posting a 9-3 record which included a trip to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoff s. It was the third time in the last four seasons IUP was ranked in the top 25, coming in at No. 7 in 2012 and No. 24 in 2013. IUP opened the NCAA Division II playoff s with a 47-21 victory at Charleston, putting together a comeback that in-cluded 41 second half points. Dual threat redshirt freshman quarterback Lenny Williams finished with 252 total yards and five touchdowns, The Crimson Hawks, who averaged the fift h-best ground attack in the nation at 293.6 yards per game, totaled 347 rushing yards against Charleston. For their eff orts, left guard Ethan Cooper was named a Football Gazette third-team All-American, while Williams was named the Super Region One and PSAC West Freshman of the Year. Eleven Crimson Hawks were named given all-conference honors, while six were named to the all-region second team. IUP entered 2015 ranked fift h in the PSAC West preseason coaches’ poll, before finishing the year with a share of the division title with a 6-1 conference record.

The Crimson Hawks finished 2012 with a 12-2 overall record, advancing to the Super Region One Championship (NCAA quarterfinals) at Winston-Salem State, ultimately falling to the Rams 21-17.

IUP went 6-1 in PSAC West play, with its only loss at then sixth-ranked California 26-24 on Sept. 22. The record was good for first in the division, earning the right to host East champion Shippensburg in the PSAC “State Game.” The Crimson Hawks would use a 27-10 first half lead in the game en route to a dominating 41-10 victory over the Red Raiders for the program’s first championship game win since 1987. (Note: The “State Game” was not played from 1988-2007)

The Crimson Hawks earned the third seed in Super Region One and defeated sixth-seeded Shepherd 27-17 at home in the first round. They’d go on to defeat second-seeded New Haven (Conn.) on the road in the second round before the loss at top seed Winston-Salem State.

The postseason appearance was the first for IUP since 2007 and the first NCAA quarterfinal appearance since 2002.

For his eff orts, Cignetti was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year, helping 14 of his players to All-PSAC West honors aft er the season. That includes PSAC West Off ensive Player of the Year Harvie Tuck, who finished his senior season with 1,660 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.

Cignetti also boasts six all-region players and two student-athletes – seniors Johnny Franco and Anthony

DiPasquale – who were named Capital One Academic All-America’s. In 2012, the Crimson Hawks were the top defense in the nation, leading Division II in scoring defense (12.5 points per game) and total defense (257.9 yards per game). IUP was also third in the nation in turnover margin with a +21.

The rushing off ense was also one of the best in the nation, as Tuck teamed with De’Antwan Williams to help IUP rush for 259.3 yards per game, 10th in the nation (as of 12/1). The Crimson Hawks 3,630 net rushing yards broke the single-season program record of 3,211 set in 1993. IUP averaged 33.6 points and 417.5 yards of total off ense. They were also second in the nation in time of possession, keep-ing the ball an average of 34:16 per contest.

2012 also marked Cignetti’s 30th year of coaching.

Prior to IUP, Cignetti spent four seasons as the wide receiv-ers coach and recruiting coordinator under Nick Saban at Alabama and helped the Crimson Tide win the 2009 BCS National Championship with a 14-0 record. He brought in the consensus No. 1 recruiting class in the country in 2008, the first of three straight classes which finished in the top five nationally.

In addition to the national title, Cignetti was part of Alabama teams that posted a record of 33-3 over the past three regular seasons, including 29 consecutive regular season victories, won the 2008 and 2009 SEC West cham-pionship and earned a berth in the 2008 Sugar Bowl.

Among his recruits was Mark Ingram, who won the 2008 Heisman Trophy. He coached Julio Jones, the Associated Press SEC Freshman of the Year and Columbus Touchdown Club National Freshman of the Year the same season.

On the strength of his accomplishments in the recruiting battles and the successes his players had on the field, Cignetti was honored as one of four finalists for the 2010 FootballScoop Wide Receivers Coach of the Year.

Cignetti joined the staff at Alabama aft er spending seven seasons (2000-06) as the recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State while also coaching tight ends from 2000-02 and 2005-06 and quarterbacks during the 2003 and 2004 campaigns. The Wolfpack qualified for five bowl games during that time, including the 2002 Gator Bowl when N.C. State set a school record with 11 wins. One of his last recruits before moving to Alabama was quarterback Russell Wilson out of Virginia, who committed to NC State before moving on to Wisconsin as a senior. He finished his collegiate career with a 60.9 completion percentage, 11,720 yards and 109 touchdowns before getting draft ed by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round 2012 and leading them to a Super Bowl XLVIII victory.

Two of his recruiting classes ranked in the top 10 in the nation, and Rivals.com named him one of the top 25 recruiters in the nation in 2004. While working with the Wolfpack quarterbacks, Cignetti had the opportunity to coach 2003 ACC Player of the Year Philip Rivers and help prepare him to become the fourth pick in the NFL draft the following spring.
