Introduction of the USN

WSN vs. USN (1/3)
WSN (Wireless Sensor Network)Definition:
a mesh network of small sensor nodes communicating among themselves using RF communication, and deployed in large scale (from tens to thousands) to sense the physical world. (Source: WIKIPEDIA)
Physical componentssmall MCU, limited memory, sensors (including specific conditioning circuitry), communication device (usually radio transceivers), battery, etc.
Characteristics:small-scale sensor nodes, limited power they can harvest or store, harsh environmental conditionsnode failures, mobility of nodes, dynamic network topology, communication failures, heterogeneity of nodes, large scale of deployment, unattended operation

WSN vs. USN (2/3)
USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network)Definition:
Not a simple network but an intelligent information infrastructure of advanced e-Life societywhich means it is not a network technology term but a service infrastructure term of the logical network
Physical componentsWSN components + wired SN + Infrastructure Network components
Two viewpointsNetwork installation view Application/service view
USN deals with both viewpoints

InternationalTelecommunicationUnion
WSN vs. USN (3/3)
WSN vs. USNWSN is a networking technology term and focuses on sensor
node networking and node system development.
USN is not a technology term but a user- and service-perspective term which shall cover lower-layer and higher-layer issues including PHY/MAC, networking aspects, application protocol and language issues, middleware functions, various management topics, context awareness services, and a variety of applications and services.

USN Applications (2/4)
Type of Applications by Service styleMany factors can be considered
Deployment (Manual vs. Automatic)Network Size (Small, Medium, Large)Routing (Topology (Single-hop, Multi-hop))Mobility (fixed vs. moving)Connectivity (always connected, intermittent, sporadic)Event-driven or periodic data gatheringLocation- and data-awarenessAddressing Mechanism (dynamic configuration)

USN Applications (3/4)
Type of Applications by deploying environmentIndoor:
Building monitoring, Home automation, Home Health care, etc.Fully controllable environmentCombined scheduling and sensing communications
Outdoor (static to mixed deployment):Structural monitoring, traffic management, etc.Medium to Large scaleManageable environment, static configuration
Outdoor (unstructured deployment)Environmental monitoring, disaster monitoring, etc.Large number of Sensors are deployed by unstructured manner, Harsh environmentFault tolerant, long lasting battery, auto-configuration
