West Pasco Chamber of Commerce FAREWELL TO PRESIDENT JOE ALPINE AND WELCOME NEW PRESIDENT CHIP WICHMANOWSKI

Joe Alpine He has lived a colorful life. He was drafted into the armed forces and served in Vietnam in 1965-66, as a helicopter gunner and later, a military police officer. He married his wife, Barbara, in 1967, and they raised two daughters. Upon moving to Florida in 1971, he became an “elf” for eight years with Keebler, the well-known cookie manufacturer.

In 1997, he co-chaired the Business Development Week in Pasco County, which led to his becoming the President of the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce.

Now, after 15 years of dedicated service to the Chamber, Joe Alpine has relinquished his executive position.

“How time flies when you’re having fun,” he quips.

When Joe turned 70 last Fall, he decided it was time to retire and spend more time with Barbara, his daughters and grandsons, Justin & Ayden.

A “Roast & Toast” celebration of his tenure with the West Pasco Chamber was held at Spartan Manor in New Port Richey, January 11, where he was honored for his tireless service.

One of his biggest accomplishments as President of the Chamber was keeping the membership up as the economy entered into recession. The Chamber membership currently exceeds 860 busi-nesses and organizations, which is down from the pre-recession total of 1000. However, the programs initiated over the last few years of Joe’s presidency have kept membership strong.

“If you put others before yourself, it turns out pretty well,” Joe explains. “Try to do what you think is best.”What is best includes supporting and promoting local businesses. Joe has consistently recognized the impact of small businesses on the local economy. “Small businesses provide the spark,” he believes.

In retirement, Joe plans to attend all of Justin’s basketball games at Florida Christian College in Kissimmee, and will enjoy watch-ing 9-year-old Ayden grow up.

Chip WichmanowskiAlthough the shoes he is filling are big ones, Henry “Chip” Wichmanowski, the new President of the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, is more than capable of doing just that.

“I have a passion for West Pasco,” Chip said. “I think I bring the ability to get peo-ple to work together. I believe I have the ability to network and work with people to get more members here.”

With approximately 4,500 West Pasco businesses, his goal is to have a quarter of the in the Chamber. However, it is not simply about expanding membership, but retaining current members. “If I had my druthers,” Chip said, “there’d be no terminations (among members), although, some turnover is inevitable.”

Chip proudly served as Executive Director of the Pasco Education Foundation, which raises money for the Pasco school district, and this aligned him perfectly with his new position. His experi-ence with the Foundation will assist him in fundraising efforts to implement programs necessary to continue economic develop-ment.

He continued, “Our biggest opportunity is increasing and grow-ing businesses here. My goal is to make the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce the go-to organization for economic development in West Pasco.”

Chip and his wife, Debbie, lived in Florida briefly in 1977, and returned as permanent residents to Pasco County in 1984, and they have been serving the community and Pasco County School System since. Chip became Principal at Gulfside Elementary School, and later Calusa Elementary. Debbie is currently Assistant Principal at Longleaf Elementary School.

Their three children are Nicholas, 31, a commercial liability insurance salesman in Fort Myers, Jamie, 29, an Anclote High School teacher; and Alisha, or Ali as she prefers, a River Ridge High School junior.

For more information about the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, call 727-842-7651 or visit their office located at 5443 Main Street, New Port Richey.

We wish you both many blessings in your next phase of life!

Health Benefits of Dark ChocolateGood for Your HeartStudies show that eating a small amount of dark chocolate two or three times each week can help lower your blood pressure. Dark chocolate improves blood flow and may help prevent the formation of blood clots. Eating dark chocolate may also prevent arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

Good for Your BrainDark chocolate increases blood flow to the brain as well as to the heart, so it can help improve cognitive function, helps reduce your risk of stroke and contains several chemical compounds that have a positive effect on your mood and cognitive health. Chocolate contains phenylethylamine (PEA), the same chemical your brain creates when you feel like you're falling in love. PEA encourages your brain to release endorphins, so eating dark chocolate will make you feel happier.

Helps Control Blood SugarDark chocolate helps keep your blood vessels healthy and your circulation unimpaired to protect against type 2 diabetes. The flavonoids in dark chocolate also help reduce insulin resistance by helping your cells to function normally and regain the ability to use your body's insulin efficiently. Dark chocolate also has a low glycemic index, meaning it won't cause huge spikes in blood sugar levels.

Full of AntioxidantsDark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants help free your body of free radicals, which cause oxidative damage to cells. Free radicals are implicated in the aging process and may be a cause of cancer, so eating antioxidant rich foods like dark chocolate can protect you from many types of cancer and slow the signs of aging.

Contains TheobromineDark chocolate contains theobromine, which has been shown to harden tooth enamel. That means that dark chocolate, unlike most other sweets, lowers your risk of getting cavities if you practice proper dental hygiene.Theobromine is also a mild stimulant, though not as strong as caffeine. It can, however, help to suppress coughs.

High in Vitamins and MineralsDark chocolate contains a number of vitamins and minerals that can support your health. Dark chocolate contains some of the following vitamins and minerals in high concentrations:

• Potassium• Copper• Magnesium • Iron

The copper and potassium in dark chocolate help prevent against stroke and cardiovascular ailments. The iron in chocolate protects against iron deficiency anemia, and the magnesium in chocolate helps prevent type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Source: www.fitday.com

In all honesty, I often choose not to indulge in dessert or sweet confections. My mother, Marie, is an incredibly talented baker, and yet, when I visit her in Kentucky, I usually fore-go her delectable treats. Perhaps, that stems from not wanting to gain weight. Maybe, my daily sugar intake does not allow my mind & body to crave anything additional. I don’t really know.

I do know that when I choose to indulge in something sweet and sinful, it most often contains some form of chocolate. Mom’s chocolate meringue pie is the best I have ever eaten. For my birthday last year, Publisher of It’s Your Home, Debbie Dawson, bought me a “Molten Chocolate Cake” at Chili’s, which oozed creamy chocolate lava from within. Delicious.

The “Chocolate Elvis” smoothie at Planet Smoothie is something I attempt to emulate in my own kitchen I use dark chocolate almond

milk, a half tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder, two small scoops of frozen chocolate yogurt, a heaping tablespoon of peanut but-ter, and a banana. Yummo, as Rachael Ray would say.

Chocolate-covered strawberries are truly dec-adent when they are the wonderfully sweet strawberries harvested here in Florida.

Sipping a chocolate martini, enjoying a spectacular sunset, on the patio at Dimitri’s on the Water in Tarpon Springs, is immensely relaxing.

There are chocolate-filled croissants in my freezer. My favorite chocolate-glazed doughnuts are sold at Hadorn’s Bakery in Bardstown, KY. Give me a bowl of Double Chocolate Fudge Ice Cream, and I am in Heavenly Hash!

Yet sometimes, a simple square of a quality

dark chocolate bar is just perfect. Numerous studies over the last decade have shown the benefits of cocoa phenols found in dark choc-olate. As powerful antioxidants, they remove “free radicals and destructive molecules that can lead to heart disease and other ailments,” according to a report by in WebMD Health News, Aug 2003. The phenols also serve as catalysts in lowering blood pressure, accord-ing to their published studies.

Milk chocolate, white chocolate, or even dark chocolate coupled with a glass of milk, do not have the same healthy properties. (As I have learned, milk is not as good for a body as you might think.)

For those reasons, I will consistently opt for dark chocolate if…when …I choose to par-take.

Hmmm. That “Chocolate Elvis” smoothie sure sounds good… ; )

Ten Tips to OrganizeOnepopularresolutionastheNewYeararrivesistobecomemoreorganizedbeitathomeorwork.Thefollowing helpful tips, should assist in keeping thisNewYear’sresolutionfromfallingbythewayside!

1. Dispose of anything you don’t often use, efficiently store these items, or find them a clearly designated space where they can be easily accessed.

2. Once you find a “home” or space for these items, PUT THEM AWAY, promptly after you use them.

3. Use plastic baggies, like “Ziplocks” to keep things together, compact and dust-free.

4. Keep a calendar on your desk or refrigerator for keeping track of appointments, weekly tasks, and special occasions.

5. Use a planner if your schedule is jam-packed with appointments, meetings or errands.

6. Purchase a “Smart Phone” for easily accessible data that you may need regularly.

7. Write things down! Keep notes, lists, phone numbers, schedules on Post-It notes, index cards or legal pads that can be quickly referenced.

8. Delegate responsibilities to others to keep yourself from becoming bogged-down or disheveled.

9. Indecision of what to do with clutter results in disorganization. Make a decision about what to do with stuff, and do it!

10. Clear the surfaces around you, and it will clear your mind.

No Scar Hair TransplantsBy Dr. Gerard Cappiello

FOR MEN AND WOMENThe new method of hair transplant Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is very safe, minimally invasive, relatively minor procedure without a scar or long painful recovery. This new technology is revolutionary and eliminates all of the very down sides usually associated with hair transplants. With the Follicle Unit Extraction method there is minimal discomfort, no scalpel incision, no sutures, little to no risk of complications, quick recovery time, fewer activity limitations and a more natural looking result than traditional strip methods (patients can wear their hair short if they choose too without an unsightly scar.

With the FUE method there are no linear scars (as with the antiquated “strip” method”) which can stretch out over time and be very visible making it difficult to wear short hair. The FUE extraction method uses a contra-angled automated tool, perfected by Dr. Cappiello, insures excellent follicle quality.

The extracted follicles remain moist and robust because the collection canister is filled with YOUR OWN STEM CELLS AND PLATELET RICH PLASMA. The addition of stem cells to your scalp and to the physiological solution that holds the hair units as they are transplanted , result in a much larger percentage survival yield to the individual follicular units that are transplanted.

This hair transplant is perfect for women and men who desire a fuller crop of hair without the stigma usually associated with hair transplants. Dr. Cappiello can also transplant hair to the eye brows or in unsightly face lift scars.

This method is affordable and cost little more than the antiquated and unsightly method that is no longer acceptable by more and more men and women.

There is just no better way to do hair transplants! Dr. Gerard Cappiello should know since he has had excellent results!

Make your health a priority and you will be more successful in all areas of your life. Neglect your health, and you won’t have a life to be successful in!

When you are vitally healthy you have more energy, clearer thinking, and are better able to handle stress. On the contrary, when you neglect your health you may feel sluggish and chronically stressed. In studies in both children and adults, they have found that obesity can hinder you from getting a good night’s sleep, which directly affects brain health and cognition. What that means is that being overweight or obese is actually negatively affecting your brain. To be on top of your game, and get ahead in life, you’ve got to have every bit of brain power you can muster! So how do we ensure good health so that we can live in full vitality and achieve more in life?

1. Maintain a healthy weight. Overweight brains may shrink by 4% and obese brains by as much as 8%. Lose those pounds to keep your brain power!

2. Drink pure water. Your body is 75% water and your organs and brain CRAVE it. Give your body what it requires to stay vitally healthy – every day, all day!

3. Eat your veggies! Antioxidants, fiber, and minerals they pull from the soil that are meant for your body! There are so many benefits, yet they are underrepresented in the SAD diet (STANDARD AMERICAN DIET). Pure fruits and vegetables in abundance in the diet may be the single key to permanent weight loss! Pile them on your plate!

4. Sleep well. For most people that means 8 hours every day, at the same time. If you are unrested, your cognitive abilities are as impaired as if you were drunk!

5. Exercise. Your body was meant to MOVE. As we get older, this becomes increasingly more important because chronic disuse of this perfect machine leads to chronic pain. Find something you love to do – and do it – for LIFE. For Vitality. Because your life is worth living WELL.

6. You have a vital power within you that is just waiting to be utilized. When you walk through life with a strong body at a healthy weight, well rested and well nourished, you will have more energy and confidence to go after your goals and achieve them. When you are vitally healthy you will feel incredible about yourself, and that will carry over into your work and social life. Decide today - You are going to achieve more in all areas of your life with a new, Vital YOU!

DEFY Aging By Barbara Marville-Kelly

On 12-12-12, at 12:00pm, 12 beautiful, empowered women of greatness gathered together to form HEART W.A.V.E.S. (Women And Visionary Enlightened Spirits). Connecting through our heart sources, our intention is to make a differ-ence in the world by adapting “Your Song” as our mantra for life. This is derived from an anonymous story about an endearing African Tribe, seen below.

We ALL have a song to sing in life, regardless of what it is, how it sounds or how it is sung. It is literally a song, or simple spoken words, of expression. “Your Song” tells a story of who you are and where you’ve been. HEART W.A.V.E.S. serves as a metaphor, describing effective women in this world of changing times, consciousness, awareness, and enlighten-ment. It is important to sing “Your Song” during life’s transi-tions. If you have forgotten, HEART W.A.V.E.S. will be here to help remind you!

HEART W.A.V.E.S. gathers once a month, with an open invitation to women of like minds and spirits. We share time, regenerate, renew and do what we do best, CHIT CHAT, We watch the miracles of life unfold, just as they are supposed to. Our fellowship will embrace you with open arms!

I hope you delight in this endearing story of Living from the Heart, and resonate with “Your Song!”

“YOUR SONG”“When a woman in a certain African tribe knows she is preg-nant, she goes out into the wilderness with a few friends, and together they pray and meditate until they hear the song of the child. They recognize that every soul has its own vibration that expresses its unique flavor and purpose. When the women attune to the song, they sing it out loud. Then they return to the tribe and teach it to everyone else.

When the child is born, the community gathers and sings the child’s song to him or her. Later, when the child enters educa-tion, the village gathers and chants the child’s song. When the child passes through the initiation into adulthood, the people again come together and sing. At the time of marriage, the person hears his or her song. Finally, when the soul is about to pass from this world, the family and friends gather at the person’s bed, just as they did at their birth, and sing the per-son to the next life.

In the African tribe there is one other occasion upon which the villagers sing to the child. If at any time during his or her life the person commits a crime or aberrant social act, the individual is called to the center of the village and the people in the community form a circle around him/her, and they sing the individual’s song.

The tribe recognizes that the correction for antisocial behavior is not punishment: it is love and the remembrance of identity. When you recognize your own song, you have no desire or need to do anything that would hurt another.

A friend is someone who knows your song and sings it to you when you have forgotten it. Those who love you are not fooled by mistakes you have made or dark images you hold about yourself. They remember your beauty when you feel ugly; your wholeness when you are broken; your innocence when you feel guilty; and your PURPOSE when you are confused.

If you do not give your song a voice, you will feel lost, alone, and confused. If you express it, YOU WILL COME TO LIFE! We attract people on a similar wavelength, so we can sup-port each other to sing aloud. Sometimes we attract people who challenge us by telling us that we cannot or should not sing our song in public. Yet these people help us, too, for they stimulate us to find greater courage to sing it.

You may not have grown up in an African tribe that sings your song to you at crucial life transitions, but LIFE IS ALWAYS REMINDING YOU WHEN YOU ARE IN TUNE WITH YOURSELF AND WHEN YOU ARE NOT!

When you feel good, what you are doing matches your song, and when you feel awful it doesn’t. In the end, we shall all rec-ognize our song and sing it well. You may feel a little warbly at the moment, but so have all the great singers. JUST KEEP ON SINGING, AND YOU’LL FIND YOUR WAY HOME!” Anonymous My deepest gratitude goes to our sponsor, Debbie Dawson, of It’s Your Home Magazine, as our continuously emerging, amazing, and empowered woman, who ALWAYS steps into the greatness with which she was born!

For more information about the next gathering of HEART W.A.V.E.S., call: Barbara Marville-Kelly at 727-945-9223 [email protected]

PLUMB SMARTPreventing Kitchen Drain Clogs

Kitchen sink drains clog most often because of a buildup of grease that traps food particles.

Hair and soap are often at fault in bathroom drains.PROPER DISPOSAL OF KITCHEN WASTE WILL KEEP

SINK DRAIN CLOGS TO A MINIMUM.

• Don't pour grease down the kitchen sink.• Don't wash coffee grounds down the sink. Throw them out.• Be sparing with chemical cleaners, particularly if you have

brass, steel, or cast-iron traps and drainpipes; some caustic chemicals can corrode metal pipes.

Whether you have been their customer of ten years or ten days, you can feel confident you and your possessions will be treated with the utmost respect that’s deserved!

What are Cash Mobs? A cash mob is a new trend in which people plan organized events, providing a way to join together and support local businesses. Cash mobs encourage members of a community to make a change and help support a local business. Mobbers typically spend 10-20 dollars at the business being mobbed, which creates an immediate economic stimulus. Not only are cash mobs helping local businesses achieve financial success, they are creating everlasting customers and uniting people of the community.

Together, we have all made a difference at these fine local Mom & Pop businesses:

What is a computer virus?Computer viruses are small software programs that are designed to spread from one computer to another and to interfere with computer operation.

Through the course of using the Internet and your computer, you may have come in to contact with computer viruses. A computer virus might corrupt or delete data on your computer, use your email program to spread itself to other computers, or even erase everything on your hard disk. Viruses can be disguised as attachments of funny images, greeting cards, or audio and video files.

The 7th CASH MOB of WEST PASCO COUNTY What A Great Way to Bring Our Community Together!

On Saturday morning, January 19, at 10:00AM, a crowd embarked to the parking lot of Publix at River Crossings, located at 5324 Little Road, in New Port Richey. There, Debbie Dawson and Valerie Wilson-Napoli of It’s Your Home Magazine, announced the name of the business that was about to be “HIT”. Within minutes, dozens of friends & neighbors from our community crashed Better Health and Nutrition, where everyone shopped! Owners, Janice and Peter Dunn, were shocked as this group of eager customers entered their store. Peter exclaimed, “This exceeded my expectations! Thank you to everyone!”

The “mob” then retreated to Steve’s Place, a nearby restaurant, to enjoy networking and a tasty lunch. Votes were taken for the next Mom & Pop business to “HIT” in the West Pasco area.

Stay tuned and join us for the next Cash Mob in February! You can find more information on Facebook at Cash Mob West Pasco.

Magazines enhance advertising impact: Strong consumer experiences with magazines boost magazine advertising impact Magazine ads last: Consumers refer to magazines multiple times – even saving them, giving advertisers the opportunity for added exposures. Magazines supply credibility: Consumers trust and believe magazine advertising more than advertising in other media. Magazine creative connects: Magazine ad content makes consumers laugh, cry, think, desire, ponder, smile and more. In short, magazine ads make people react – and connect with advertisers’ brands.

Add Print, Add Power – “Add”vertise Your Business with Your Local Magazine, It’s Your Home

Advertising in magazines is still one of the most effective ways of building brands at the right time. They reach your target audience on a regular basis, deliver ROI, generate large amounts of brand awareness and significantly increase sales.

Everything about magazines exudes the quality of your product or service. The editorial content and optimal print quality make a perfect fit to promote your business.

Reasons to advertise:

To reserve your space for the next issue of It’s Your Home Magazine, call 727-709-9541 or email [email protected].

Magazines provide reach – faster than you think: The top 25 magazines reach more teens and adults than the top 25 prime-time TV programs. The average magazine reaches almost two-thirds of its audience within a month’s time. Magazines target efficiently: With a range of titles that appeal to specific demographics, lifestyles and interests, advertisers can hone in on the targets that fit their needs. Magazines sell: Multiple studies have demonstrated that allocating more money to magazines in the media mix improves marketing and advertising ROI across a broad range of product categories.

Magazines provide rich experiences: Readers experience magazines in meaningful ways, including: I get value for my time and money, It makes me smarter, It’s my personal time out and I often reflect on it. Magazines engage: 90% of magazine readers pay full and complete attention when reading magazines. Magazine readers demonstrate the lowest level of multitasking when compared with multitasking rates for other media.

The Tarpon Sunday Market has kicked-off 2013 with the spirit of community and participation! This year, the Sunday Market is promoting healthier living with an emphasis on locally grown produce, organics, and commu-nity gardens. Shop the numerous vendors selling everything

from recycled goods and hand-crafted items, to baked and canned goods, prepared foods and plants, all in an open-market setting. Community service and garden information are also available on site. The Tarpon Sunday Market is open 10:00AM-3:00PM, in the Mother Meres Municipal Parking Lot, at the corner of Alt 19 (Pinellas Ave) and W Tarpon Ave.

The Suncoast Co-op was founded when five local, organic gardeners decided they wanted to share the fruits of their labor with friends and neighbors in the community. Their collaboration of efforts resulted in a cooperative being established in New Port Richey, fueled by two dozen mem-bers, and a myriad of supporters who desire fresh, locally grown, 100% organic produce and hand-crafted products. Further, as the general public purchases products from area farmers, artisans and craftsmen, the direct impact on the local economy is evident.

Absolutely no chemicals or pesticides are used by these organic growers, whose goal is to promote a “food move-ment” to improve the health and well-being of everyone involved.

To that end, the Suncoast Co-op hosts movies or educa-tional documentaries about such topics as food, health, gardening and more. The movies and the products of the co-op are always open to the public. It is the goal of this worker-owned co-op to expand awareness about and availability of healthy, organic foods and products which benefits everyone!

The Suncoast Co-op serves the West Pasco and North Pinellas Counties through an online shopping service, with product deliveries to their location at the Habitat for Humanity Restore at 4131 Madison Ave, New Port Richey. Visit their Suncoast Café on Saturdays from 10:00AM-2:00PM for fresh baked goods, locally roasted organic coffee and homemade teas.

Snacking is a major pastime for many kids — and that's not necessarily bad. Nutritious snacking can help your child curb hunger throughout the day, as well as provide energy and important nutrients. Find out how to make healthy snacks for kids. Keep junk food out of the houseYour child won't clamor for cookies, candy bars or chips if you don't keep them on hand. Set a good example by choosing healthy snacks yourself. Go for the grainWhole-grain foods — such as whole-grain pretzels or tortillas and high-fiber, whole-grain cereals — provide energy with some staying power. Mix and matchServe baby carrots or other raw veggies with fat-free ranch dressing or hummus. Dip graham cracker sticks or fresh fruit in fat-free yogurt. Spread peanut butter on celery, apples or bananas. Broaden the menuOffer out-of-the-usual fare, such as pine-apple, cranberries, red or yellow peppers, mangoes, tangelos or roasted soy nuts.

Revisit breakfastServe breakfast foods — such as scram-bled eggs and whole-grain toast — as healthy snacks for kids in the afternoon. Sweeten it upHealthy snacks for kids don't have to be bland. To satisfy your child's sweet tooth, offer fat-free pudding, frozen yogurt or frozen fruit bars. Make smoothies with skim milk, fat-free yogurt, and fresh or frozen fruit. Have funUse a cookie cutter to make shapes out of low-fat cheese slices, whole-grain bread or whole-grain tortillas. Make fruit kebabs or show your child how to eat diced fruit with chopsticks. Make a tower out of whole-grain crackers, spell words with pretzel sticks, or make funny faces on a plate using different types of fruit. Promote independenceKeep a selection of ready-to-eat veggies in the refrigerator. Leave fresh fruit in a bowl on the counter. Store low-sugar, whole-grain cereal and fruit canned or packaged in its own juice in an easily accessible cabinet.

Don't be fooled by labeling gimmicksFoods marketed as low-fat or fat-free can still be high in calories and sodium. Likewise, foods touted as cholesterol-free can still be high in fat, saturated fat and sugar. Check nutrition labels to find out the whole story. Designate a snacking zoneRestrict snacking to certain areas, such as the kitchen. You'll save your child count-less calories from mindless munching in front of the TV. If your child needs to snack on the go, offer string cheese, yogurt sticks, cereal bars, a banana or other drip-free items.

Teaching your child to make healthy snack choices now will help set the stage for a lifetime of healthy eating. Start today!

Suncoast Waldorf School-Schooling the Head, Hands & Heart

Windows Into Waldorf OPEN HOUSEFebruary 9th, 9:00 am-noon (Please RSVP to the school)

Lecture “Technology in Education”Friday, February 15th, 7:00 pm open to the public

Suncoast Waldorf School is a non-profit corporation, and is not affiliated with any church or religious organization, nor does it discriminate on the basis of race, creed, or economic status. Suncoast Waldorf School is a member of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America.

Sparking the imaginations of young students every day are the teach-ers and staff of the Suncoast Waldorf School, in Palm Harbor. This private, non-traditional, educational institu-tion follows the Waldorf philosophy of honoring the pace at which children develop, without exerting unnecessary pressures upon them as regularly seen in public schools.

Scientist, and philosopher, Rudolph Steiner, relentlessly sought knowl-edge of the true nature of human beings, which he considered “Spiritual Science.” In 1919, he was asked if there was ”a way of educating chil-dren that would help them develop into human beings capable of bringing peace to the world.” Steiner’s answer was “yes”, at which time he was invited to lead this educational movement. Not long after, Waldorf Education was born!

Early Childhood Development is of the utmost importance at Suncoast

Waldorf School, which accommodates students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

“Kindergarten”, or the “Child’s Garden”, is far from lost at Suncoast Waldorf, where two mixed classes of children ages 3 ½-6 are allowed to play, grow and learn at a pace suited to their developing bodies. The colors of the rooms are warm, and the lights are natural and soft. Children have access to various hand-crafted toys and mul-ti-textured objects to stimulate their young imaginations. Teachers share stories and fairy tales from memory, not books, keeping the tots engaged. They offer guidance toward acceptable social behaviors, while promoting a feeling of community spirit.

Students are enveloped in love and nurtured to learn at their own individual levels. An emphasis on creativity and imagination in play, arts, crafts, music and nature, allows young children the opportunity to evolve normally and

enjoy discovering more about them-selves and the world around them.

“Merrily We Meet” are play-group sessions that run weekly over the course of 13-15 weeks. These play-groups are open to mothers, fathers, grandparents, step-parents, nannies and caregivers to bring their infants and toddlers and experience a beau-tiful togetherness within the nurtur-ing educational environment that is Suncoast Waldorf School.

”Windows into Waldorf”, their Open House, Saturday, February 9, at 9:00AM, is designed for visitors to experience all the school has to offer. Please RSVP to the school if planning to attend.

For more information about Suncoast Waldorf School, please visit their website, www.suncoastwaldorf.org, or call 727-786-8311.

Cyberbullying is bullying or harassment that happens online. It can happen via email, text message, game, or on a social networking site. It might involve spreading rumors or images posted on someone’s profile or passed around for others to see, or creating a group or page to make a person feel left out.

• Tell your kids that they can’t hide behind the words they type and the images they post. Bullying is a lose-lose situation. Hurtful messages not only make the target feel bad, but also make the sender look bad. Often they can bring scorn from peers and punishment from authorities.

• Ask your kids to let you know if an online message or image makes them feel threatened or hurt.

• Read the comments. Cyberbullying often involves mean-spirited comments. Check out your kid’s page from time totimetoseewhatyoufind.

If your child is targeted by a cyberbully, keep a cool head. Tell your child not to respond. Instead, encourage him or her to work with you to save the evidence and talk to you about it. If the bullying persists, share the record with school officials or local law enforcement.

Celebrating 20 Years

Dogs are known for eating things when they are not supposed to. This is especially true of puppies. Also, dogs have an excellent sense of smell, making it fairly easy to find any secret hiding spots for the chocolate. This can be a dangerous combination when there is chocolate around the house.

Chocolate is derived from the roasted seeds of Theobroma cacao, which contains certain properties that can be toxic to animals: caffeine and theobromine. If ingested, these two ingredients can also lead to various medical complications and may even prove fatal for your dog.

Symptoms and TypesVomitingDiarrheaIncreased body temperatureIncreased reflex responsesMuscle rigidityRapid breathingIncreased heart rateLow blood pressureSeizuresAdvanced signs (cardiac failure, weakness, and coma)

The amount and type of chocolate ingested is also important, as they are the determining factors for the severity of the toxicity. The three types of chocolate that you must be aware of are:

Milk Chocolate – Mild signs of toxicity can occur when 0.7 ounces per pound of body weight is ingested; severe toxicity occurs when two ounces per pound of body weight is ingested (or as little as one pound of milk chocolate for a 20-pound dog).

Semi-Sweet Chocolate – Mild signs of toxicity can occur when 0.3 ounce per pound of body weight is ingested; severe toxicity occurs when one ounce per pound of body weight is ingested (or as little as six ounces of semi-sweet chocolate for a 20-pound dog).

Baking Chocolate – This type of chocolate has the highest concentration of caffeine and theobromine. Therefore, as little as two small one-ounce squares of baking chocolate can be toxic to a 20-pound dog (or 0.1 ounce per pound of body weight).

CausesIn the right quantities chocolate can become toxic for any dog. So be wary of feeding your pet anything that might contain chocolate and always keep it out of reach.

DiagnosisYour veterinarian will perform a complete physical exam, including a chemical blood profile, electrolyte panel and a urinalysis. These tests will help determine if there is a chocolate/caffeine overdose. Blood can also be taken to test for theobromine concentrations, while an ECG is performed to help determine if the heart is showing any abnormalities in rhythm or conduction of heart beats.
