Vehicle Infrastructure Initiative

Advances in the field of in-vehicle technologies, through programs such as the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII), will provide vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside communications in both passenger and commercial vehicles. This will enable warning drivers of potential collisions and undesirable lane departures; assisting in collision avoidance; significantly reducing crashes; and increasing efficiency.

Vehicle Infrastructure InitiativeNYSDOT ITS WC VII Test Bed

– 40-mile-plus corridor on Long Island Expressway, I-495 in NYC/Long Island, including freeway and arterial

– Approximately 25 Roadside Equipment (RSE) units

– Demonstrates more than 12 mobility and safety use applications, including traveler information, toll collection, intersection safety and safety warning

– Integrated into the INFORM transportation management center system

Vehicle Infrastructure InitiativeNYS Thruway – Spring Valley

– Test bed being deployed; will be integrated into NYSTA technical infrastructure

– Will be coordinated/integrated with NYC/LI VII test bed system and program

NYSDOT Commercial Vehicle Infrastructure Initiative

– Expands VII program to integrate commercial vehicles

– Will develop, test and demonstrate commercial vehicle applications

– RFP was issued earlier this year; negotiations with selected contractor team, led by Volvo Technology of America, are under way

ITS Standards and Architectures– NYSDOT is integrating system

engineering principles in its ITS design processes.

– We have developed regional architectures for all of our major deployment areas.

– We have adopted national standards including center-to-center and center-to-field.
