ultimately results in an overall decrease of 7.7%. The small annual budget increases are no longer able to keep up with the ris-ing costs of inflation.

Additionally, over the past five (5) years we have weathered the implemen-tation of the tax cap, dramatic increases to the Teachers Retirement System and Employee Retirement System and a virtual freeze in New York State Foundation Aid. Since 2009-10, the District has lost $2,428,353 in State Aid due to the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) imposed by then Governor Patterson to balance the state budget. There is no question that the above actions forced Genesee Valley to economize, reduce programs, cut courses, delay purchases, increase class size and cut staff.

New York State has an expected $4.6 billion dollar budget surplus for 2016. It is time to call on Governor Cuomo and the NYS Legislature to eliminate the GEA and release official State Aid runs so school districts may properly budget for the future. Over the next few months, please advocate on behalf of the students, families and Genesee Valley Community. Please call on Governor Cuomo and the NYS Legislature to eliminate the GEA and fully fund our district.

As Superintendent, I will continue to advocate vigorously to ensure that our students and families have a fair, sound and equitable education. Please support us by calling, writing, emailing and commu-nicating with our elected officials listed in the box at right. Thank you.

News outlets and social media are bringing forth a great deal of noise regard-ing the 2016 New York State Budget. Gov-ernor Cuomo is promising a sig-nificant increase to the funding of education if

the state legislature adopts his proposed reforms. These reforms include extending teacher tenure, making it easier to remove poor performing teachers and changing how teachers are evaluated. The process the Governor is using to hold hostage the needed increase in funding is unaccept-able. Without going into the merits of the proposed changes, I would like to share with you the negative impact this pro-cess is having on Genesee Valley Central School District.

For the first time ever, the New York State Governor refused to provide official State Aid Runs to local schools. Without official runs, school districts are not able to calculate the amount of revenue (aid from NYS) to plan on. New York State provides approximately 80% of all of the funding for Genesee Valley. Without official runs, the NYS Legislature cannot act or add any funding for schools. Cur-rently, we have to base our revenues on last year’s amount with no guarantee of an increase.

Since 2009, Genesee Valley has expe-rienced an overall increase in budgets of 2.6%. When factoring for the increases in the Consumer Price Index, (inflation), this

Annual School Budget Vote & Board Election

By Valerie Burton, GVCS Gr. 5/6 Science

The assignment was called Human Body Corporation. This is a short summary of the instructions that they were given:

You have been a long time employee of the Human Body Corporation. You feel that your job is very important to the Human Body. As an organ within the Human Body, you have been carrying out a specific task day in and day out in order to keep the human body functioning. Due to recent budget cuts, the Human Body Corpora-tion is considering having to fire workers. You hope your job is not in jeopardy! Your assign-ment is to learn all you can about your assigned organ.

You need to research your organ in order to prove its importance within the human body. Af-ter your research is complete, you will need to create a poster of your organ so you can present it to the Human Body Corporation (your class) and convince them of its importance to the body.

The students enjoyed this project and did very well during presentations. The class was called the “Board of Directors” when they were listening to a presentation and when the presenter was done, they asked him/her many great questions about their organ. It was a great experience for the students.

h A reminder that you need 20 hours of community service before graduation. Mrs. Winterhalter, in the High School office, has the most updated list of where you stand in hours. Principals and Guid-ance Counselors have a list of community and school needs that you can use to fill the mandatory hours.

h Reminder to seniors!! Check your mailboxes weekly for scholarships!

h Parents of students who are attend-ing college should be actively working on their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The earlier you file, the more money that is available. We have extra packets from the presentation in December and also Mrs. Preston is able to meet one on one with you to help. Please call to make an appointment at 268-7900, ext. 1219.

ATTENTION JUNIORS h Any juniors considering going

to college should take one or both of the SAT or ACT tests. Some two-year schools do not require either and give an Accuplacer exam. Please check in with Mrs. Preston before registering (see schedule this page). We highly encourage juniors to take one or both of these exams sometime this spring/summer so they have a chance for multiple attempts!

h Test fees are $38.00 for the ACT and $54.50 for the ACT plus writing. The SAT cost is $52.50. Late fees are applied if registering after deadline. Registration sheets or access to the internet to register can be obtained in the Guidance Of-fice. There are fee waivers available for eligible families.

Mrs. Robinson’s Pre-K class visited the Library this week. We Read “The Emperor’s Egg” by Martin Jenkins and then pretended to be penguins keeping our “eggs” off the ice by balancing them on our feet. What wonderful penguins they would all make! I am looking forward to their next visit!

The Spring Book Fair will run from April 7th through April 10th. Students will be able to browse and purchase books that week during the school day.

The fair will also be open April 9th - the night of the Spring Fine Arts Festival.

2015 ELA Assessment Schedule

By Carol A. McCarville, Director of Curriculum and Assessment

April 14th marks the first day of administration of the New York State Assessments in ELA and Math. The chart below details specific dates and times by grade level. The assessments will be administered during a very short window of time (3 days for each content test) and will occur on the same dates for all grade levels. State mandates have left the district no flexibility in schedule; ALL students in New York State will take the same tests on the same days.

State assessments can be stressful for all. There are a few simple things parents and caregivers can do at home to help their child perform their best:

• Be sure your child is well-rested, especially the night before the exam.• Insist on breakfast, whether at home or at school; food is fuel for the brain and

body!• As much as possible, maintain a regular schedule in the days before the test.• Avoid scheduling medical and dental appointments during state assessments• Keep your child home if they are ill.The assessments are simply a chance for students to show what they know and have

learned. It is impossible to fail these assessments as they are a measure of progress from year to year. Please do let your child’s teacher know if he/she seems stressed over the state assessment; teachers can help calm those “test taking nerves”, too!

If you have any questions regarding the state assessments or the schedule (see chart), please feel free to contact the building principal or myself at (585) 268-7900 ext. 1131. Please do let us know if your child will be absent so we can schedule a make-up session. The times noted below are general estimates; please contact your child’s teacher for more specific times.

NYS Assessments for Grades 3-8Scheduled to Begin April 14th

Genesee Valley Central School is proud to announce this years’ performance will be “Annie the Musical”! This musical describes the story of the cute and lovable little orphan Annie who lives with the mean and cranky Ms. Hannigan in a New York City orphanage. Annie is invited to spend the holidays with billionaire Oliver Warbucks and the relationship that comes is a beautiful one! Please join us in watch-ing our very own talented students from grade 3 through grade 12 and featuring Audrey Warner as Ms. Hannigan, Michael Deichman as Oliver Warbucks and Grace Darrin as Annie in “Annie the Musical.”

Photography Show was held at the David A Howe Public Library in Wells-ville. There were multiple high school students who entered work. Shyenne Grooms (Interruption, upper photo) and Alexis Lombardo (sunshine peering through, lower photo) were winners in the Exceptional Photog-raphy category selected by Wellsville Photog-rapher Brian Oglesbee. Other GV participants were Brooke Nichols, Audrey Warner, Baylee Perry, Sydney Keesler, Shaquay Ely, Elaina Pike Riccardi, Danielle Hunt and Hallie Weinman. It was so exciting to see all of the students who won awards from Genesee Valley, and to also hear from the judge. He was impressed with the work these ladies chose to share in the show. There is a lot of artistic talent each of the GV ladies who entered, I hope they all continue to improve their skills and continue to make art to share with the world.

This year, twenty-one GVCS 4th – 6th graders have been participating in the “LEGO League.” At meetings, students do indeed build things out of LEGO blocks, but there is also much more. The kit provided to participating schools includes a computer “brick.” This brick is the brain for a LEGO robot that the students construct and then learn to program. They program the robot to accomplish tasks called challenges. Each year, a new set of challenges is devised for LEGO teams across the country. Competitions are then held and points are awarded to the teams whose robots successfully complete the challenges. The GVCS team is meeting regularly and preparing for a competition next fall.

Genesee Valley works hard to provide experiences for our students to help in the learning process. Grade levels take field trips that incorporate learning in the classroom with hands-on experiences. We have been lucky to receive a Target Field Trip Grant in the amount of $700 to help take our students on these trips. The grant was written by Jaci Rizzo for the Kinder-garten classrooms. The trip they will be taking this year is to Bwana Jim’s Wildlife and Nature Center in Shinglehouse, PA. The students will have the opportunity to see exotic animals, interact with some of the animals, as well as learn about their habitat, feeding, and natural living envi-ronment. They even get to feed alligators! What fun they will have!!

The deadline date for transportation requests to non-public schools for the 2015-16 school year, must be submitted in writing by April 1, 2015. Requests should be submitted to: Dr. Brian Schmitt, Super-intendent, Genesee Valley Central School, 1 Jaguar Drive, Belmont, NY 14813. Please call the district office at 268-7909 if you have questions. Thank you.
