In December 2009, Children’s Bureau construction was completed on our new flagship facility, the Gene Glick Family Support Center. This 41,000 square-foot building embodies our mission and vision by providing a

healthy environment for the families we serve while demonstrating good environmental and financial stewardship in our community. The Gene Glick Family Support Center received its LEED certification at the GOLD level in January and is the only human service facility in the state of Indiana with this designation.

What is LEED? The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) System is a measurement tool designed to grade buildings based on their environmentally sustainable (“green”) initiatives. There are four levels of certification including Certified, Silver, Gold, Platinum.

A few of the building components that helped us receive the GOLD certification include:

1. 93% of the construction debris was diverted from the demolition and new construction.

2. Annual power usage will decrease by 25-30% compared to the old facility, due to the efficiency of the mechanical and lighting systems, realizing a savings of approximately $15,000 per year.

3. Highly efficient water fixtures will reduce water usage by more than 18,000 gallons per year.

4. We saved $120,000 on the initial cost of our mechanical system by using a highly efficient VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume) heating and cooling system.

Children’s Bureau decided to build a facility that would provide an infinitely healthier environment for the children we serve while demonstrating good environmental and financial stewardship in our community.

While the Family Support Center is a “safe haven” for children, they learn about the sustainability and conservation of our city. These children are our future and we believe strongly that the construction of the environmentally friendly Family Support Center is an immeasurable down payment towards their future.

The conscious effort of marrying our environmental responsibility and social responsibility is an intrinsic part of the system and culture of Children’s Bureau. Since 1851, we have been helping families stay together, and teaching them how to live healthy, productive lives, therefore it only makes sense that we would teach them to be good citizens too.
