I want to enroll in music and I.S.P.E but... Im not an athlete.
What options do I have?
Slide 13
Your after-school activities may already qualify for I.S.P.E.
Do you already take tennis, gymnastics or even yoga classes? Are
you working toward your Black Belt in Taekwondo, Karate or Kung Fu?
Do you swim on a team or dive competitively? Any of these, and more
may qualify for I.S.P.E.
Slide 14
Design your own I.S.P.E.
Slide 15
Encinitas Solana Beach Carmel Valley Still not sure what
options are available? Check out your local Boys & Girls Club
or the YMCA. Both are currently working with SDUHSD to develop a
before- and/or after-school Fitness program for SDUHSD students
with impacted programs that will meet ISPE requirements. Please
check with your local branch to review options. Paul Ecke Branch -
Encinitas Financial assistance may be available for families in
need.
Slide 16
Look toward the future! College Admissions officers look for
continued focus in a specific area (multiple years in the same
discipline, i.e. Band/Orchestra) on High School transcripts.
Participation in outside ensembles, may or may not be
considered.
Slide 17
I.S.P.E. must be supervised by an Accredited coach or coaching
organization with a $1Mil liability policy. State of California
requires completion of 400* minutes of fitness every 10 days while
enrolled in I.S.P.E. and school is in session. (Not required over
Thanksgiving, Winter, or Spring Breaks.) I.S.P.E. logs are now
on-line to make reporting easy. Note:Participation in Competitive
Team Sports Does NOT meet the Independent Study Criteria. However,
an Accredited Coach with adequate Liability Coverage can supervise
an individual program for your child. Its up to you as to when this
takes place. * Coach may assign homework to fulfill a portion of
these hours. I.S.P.E. Requirements: Have to include all the
official stuff here, sorry.
Slide 18
I.S.P.E. is a Pass/Fail Class I.S.P.E. Activity Logs are only
due 1 x per semester and can just be a short summary (see sample
below). I.S.P.E. Self & Coach Evaluations are due only 1 x per
semester. Did you know... * CCA & SDA: logs will be due 2x per
semester

Slide 25
Music P.E. was originally intended to accommodate Marching Band
programs. Music P.E. can no longer be used by non-marching groups
in our district for the following reasons: Credentials: Music
Teachers can not supervise Physical Education. Liability: Students
must be supervised by a professional while participation in a
District approved course. State Mandated PE requirements: Per
statute, each student enrolled in any P.E. course must participate
in 400 P.E. minutes every ten days. Students self-reporting through
I.S.M.P.E. or Band PE do not meet the verification standard. Why is
Music P.E. Going Away?
