What is Solid State Lighting? Any type of
lighting that uses LEDs, OLEDs (Organic), or PLEDs (Polymer)
Most “white” LED fixtures convert blue light to an approximate white light spectrum
Tungsten Light Produces light with a
filament wire heated to a high temperature by an electric current passing through it, until it glows
Produces a continuous spectrum of light
Has a consistent color temperature of 3200K
Advantages of SSL Little generation
of heat Long life span Dimmable with
consistent color temperature
Smaller and lighter over tungsten fixtures
More energy efficient
Disadvantages of SSL Does not produce a
continuous spectrum of light
Most fixtures are soft sources
Produces a narrow beam of light
Few offer the option of changing between 3200-5600K
Costly
Tungsten (1) v. SSL (2, 3, 4) – Makeup Test
*All SSLs in these tests are meant to be tungsten substitutes
