Over the last few years, the job of putting together a resource guide for Indiana cyclists has

become much bigger, but also more fun.

The number of events, options and resources has exploded. Where once there were only a few

recreational rides and the occasional race, we now have countless mountain bike, cyclocross,

criterium, track and road races as well as some of the nation’s most popular recreational rides. We

have miles and miles of dedicated urban trails, rails-to-trails recreational paths and nationally

acclaimed mountain bike courses. We have bicycle-friendly communities, and local, regional and

statewide cycling organizations. We have some of the best cycling shops and most innovative

bike and equipment manufacturers in America. We have the top collegiate cycling program in the

nation, incredible homegrown cycling talent, and clusters of die-hard cycling fans from Evansville

to Fort Wayne and from Richmond to Terre Haute.

In other words, Indiana has become a great place to be a cyclist – and a state filled with great

cycling advocates. At Bicycle Indiana, we appreciate the passion we see among cyclists and

cycling supporters, and we dedicate ourselves to making sure cyclists of all types find Indiana to

be a safe and fun place to enjoy the activity they love.

That’s why we create this annual Indiana cycling resource guide: to make sure you have all

the information you need to ride in Indiana. In these pages, you’ll find listings of don’t-miss

events, places to ride and retailers. You can learn about Indiana’s cycling laws, safety tips and

organizations. In addition, we’ll introduce you to a couple who launched a bike-based business, a

community that has made cycling a key part of its appeal, and a new programs to teach drivers

how to share the road. It’s our goal to make this the most comprehensive guide to Indiana cycling

possible – but we need your help. If you know of an event, organization or anything else that

should be included but isn’t, please let us know.

Of course, as much as we love producing this guide, it’s only a small part of what we do at

Bicycle Indiana. Through the support of generous sponsors and our members, we advocate for

cycling, provide educational programs to communities across the state and promote the interests

of cyclists throughout Indiana. In 2011, we enjoyed some great successes – most noticeably,

perhaps, we saw more than 1,500 Indiana motorists display their pedaling passion on their

vehicles by purchasing “Share the Road” license plate (with $25 from each sale going to support

Bicycle Indiana programs). You can learn more about our efforts and results on page 16, and you

can rest assured that we’ll work even harder in the coming year to make Indiana an event better

place to be a cyclist.

Of course, that just means next year’s guide will be even bigger and more complex – and even

more fun to create. So, enjoy this guide, let us know what you think, and have a great, safe ride.

Nancy Tibbett Executive Director, Bicycle Indiana

Annual ReportAs we see changes in the conversation about Indiana transportation and transit, and growth in the role of bicycles in that conversation, Bicycle Indiana is proud to be a part of the coalition driving that change and growth. We’re also grateful to the members and partners who help to make that change possible by supporting us and our work.

In 2011, those efforts led to progress on a number of fronts. Following are a few of our key 2011 accomplishments:

• Sawmorethan1,500 I Share the Road license plates sold.

• Supportedourworkbyattractingthousandsofdollarsingrantsfromoutsidesources,signinga$9,000 sponsorship agreement with Sevenish Law Firm, and winning a contract from the Indiana State Department of Health to conduct nine Bicycle-Friendly Communities seminars.

• HostedmorethanadozenTrafficSkillsclassesthroughoutIndianatohelpadultcyclistsimprovetheir riding skills and become better vehicular cyclists. Hosted an instructor class with instructor candidates from Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois. Indiana now has eight new league-certified instructors.

• OpenednewofficesintheIndyBikeHubindowntownIndianapolis.

Alternative transit – including cycling – is gaining momentum, and we’re excited about the progress in Indiana. However, we’re also disappointed to see some “push-back,” especially at the federal level. Therefore, it’s imperative that we all continue to push for cycling safety and rights and for a “Share the Road” mentality among all road users.

As a statewide organization, non-profit Bicycle Indiana works collaboratively to represent the interests and address concerns of bicycle users and their neighbors throughout Indiana. As we have said often, our goal is simple: We want more Hoosiers to ride bicycles. But our goal comes with responsibilities: to make sure Hoosiers know how to ride safely; to educate bicyclists, pedestrians and drivers how to share the road; and to advocate for safer roads and trails. With your help, we will continue to make that our mission.

The following charts show where our money comes from, and how we use our approximately $190,000 annual budget on behalf of Indiana cyclists.

Thanks to our Supporters!

It took a ride across the U.S. and a stranger in Dubois, Wyo., for Nathan and April Reinhard to get the hint that their homemade bike bags were more than money-saving do-it-yourself innovations.

Once they got the hint, though, they got it in a big way: This spring, the Fort Wayne couple will hit the marketplace with Luggers, colorful, affordable bags for bikes.

The Reinhards say their Luggers fill a void in the bicycle marketplace, which too often focuses only on the most serious cyclists. These bags – similar to panniers – in vibrant colors and patterns are sold online through their new company Natril Gear, as well as at special events and select retailers.

The Lugger story begins in 2006. As newlyweds living in Iowa, the Reinhards discovered great bike trails and did their first overnight ride as part of RAGBRAI, the annual multi-day ride across Iowa. These self-professed adventure seekers quickly got hooked on cycling. After an exhausting first day of cycling, they lay awake in their tent talking about how great it would be to bike across the country. In no time they had decided that one of their “bucket list” items would be to ride 4,641 miles across America.

“I was like, whoa, I didn’t even know people did that,” April said.

She also had no idea that she and her husband would make the trip only a couple of years later. “I thought it would be something we’d do when we retired, or were empty nesters, and we didn’t

even have kids yet. This wasn’t something 27-year-olds did,” she said.

Things just seemed to fall into place. By 2010 the couple was living in Texas, where Nathan had taken a job. He broached the subject of doing the Ride Across America, saying it was the perfect time, since they had no debt, no kids, no pets and an apartment lease that was nearly up.

At first April thought he was crazy, but she soon agreed and became excited. As they prepared for the trip, they knew they needed something to hold their supplies, so they planned on buying panniers (bags for bikes) … until they saw what was available. Not only were they shocked by the high price, but the only panniers they found were black, which seemed boring for a couple setting out on the adventures of their lives.

The frugal couple went to a fabric store and bought material to make their own bags. Nathan chose neon green, and April selected a bright, neon stripes.

Not only did the bags serve the purpose, but they also saved the Reinhards money and drew plenty of attention on the ride.

“Every day for the first month, someone would stop us and they’d want to talk about our bags,” April said. “Actually, it was a little frustrating, because I was so excited to be on the road, and I wanted to talk about our trip. I would try to change the subject, but they would just bring up [the bags] again.”

Even bike shop owners asked about the brightly colored bags, and told the Reinhards they would be interested in selling them. Each time, Nathan and April smiled politely and kept on pedaling.

About a month into the trip, they stopped at Tammy’s Coffee Haus in Dubois, Wyo. (pop. 962). They sat near a window to keep an eye on their bikes while they took a break. As curiosity seekers checked out the bikes and gear, one woman lingered longer than most checking out the bags. April walked outside to see if she had questions.

“I love your bags,” the woman said. “Where can I buy these?”

“Thanks! My husband actually made them!” April explained as she did just about every day of the trip.

That day she and Nathan began to talk seriously about selling the bags. They had plenty of time to think and talk during the remainder of the trip. When they relocated to Fort Wayne, near Nathan’s hometown, they founded their company – Natril Gear.

With a background in market research, April now works full-time for the business, and is working to get the Luggers on the market before the 2012 cycling season. They had a contest to help come up with a name for the bags, and Lugger was chosen. They hope it becomes a household name. The company, though, is more than selling Luggers, April explains. She and Nathan have lofty goals of being able to use their story to inspire others to break away from the things that hold them back from trying new things and living their dreams.

Today the Reinhards live in a house along the Towpath Trail in Fort Wayne, where they plan to host cyclists and other trail users, whether it’s someone just stopping for a restroom break, cold water and a cookie, or even touring cyclists who need a place to pitch a tent for the night.

“We want to be a welcome, safe place along the trail,” April said.

Cyclists will know the house from the “welcome” signs in the backyard. And likely from the brightly colored Luggers on the Reinhard’s bikes.

Read about April and Nathan Reinhards’ ride across America at www.theroadto.org. Get more information about the new Lugger at www.natrilgear.com.

Greg Demopoulos believes Warsaw, Ind., should be a bicycle-friendly community.

Oh, sure, he’d like to see the community win the official designation as a “Bicycle Friendly City,” and he’d appreciate the attention such a commendation would bring to the northern Indiana community. But what he really wants is to see more people in Warsaw have the opportunity to benefit from cycling.

As it turns out, there are people like Demopoulos in a number of Indiana communities all hoping their neighbors and friends can also have the opportunity to benefit from a bicycle-friendly community. Last year, these advocates got a little help in their efforts in the form of seminars presented by Bicycle Indiana. This year, they’re already seeing progress.

Warsaw was one of nine cities around the state to host a Planning for a Bicycle-Friendly Community Seminar, which brought experts to communities to help them promote bicycling as a means of physical activity and transportation. The

seminars were part of a Bicycle Indiana program made possible from a grant from the Indiana State Department of Health.

Last May, when Demopoulos joined approximately 50 other civic leaders, community advocates and cyclists from Warsaw and the Michiana area for the Warsaw seminar, the attendees discussed issues such as opportunities and benefits of bike trails, as well as the challenges that communities face.

While some of the conversation focused on the recreational value of bike amenities, Demopoulos has grander visions. One of his community’s biggest greenway advocates, he wants more trails because of the impact they can have on people’s daily lives … on their health and wellness, and on their ability to get around town safely, spend time with family, enjoy the community’s amenities and attractions, get to school and work, avoid driving a car for short trips, and so much more.

Since the Warsaw seminar, many of the attendees have continued to meet and plan. They’ve also been educating

19

resdecision-makers and working to raise awareness about the benefits of bicycle and pedestrian trails. Those benefits include improving the community’s quality of life, but there’s also an economic impact.

For example, one challenge many of Warsaw’s large healthcare companies face is recruiting top talent. As a former Zimmer employee, Demopoulos knows that firsthand. “Someone’s first inclination of Warsaw is that it’s in the sticks, and there’s nothing to do,” Demopoulos said.

Of course, impressions change when they visit the city and see all the lakes and trails and the kind of amenities they expected only in larger cities. What Zimmer and other businesses have learned is that people consider quality of life when making relocation decisions. If Warsaw can become more pedestrian and bike-friendly, and provide connectivity between where people live, work and play, it will increase the quality of life for residents and increase opportunities for employers.

This is exactly the kind of dialogue and action Bicycle Indiana had sought when it began to offer the seminars, said Executive Director Nancy Tibbett. The purpose of the seminars was to bring together local leaders and bicycle advocates to provide education, training and consultation on how to develop, plan and create bicycle-friendly communities.

Seminars were held in Bloomington, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Lafayette, Muncie, Portage, Plymouth and Warsaw in partnership with local organizations. Most of the seminars focused on creating more bicycle-friendly communities, mapping safe routes for bicyclists and discussing challenges about developing safe routes for school children. A lunch discussion focused on best practices for companies interested in earning the “Bicycle-Friendly Business” designation from the League of American Bicyclists.

In Indianapolis, Bicycle Garage Indy (BGI) told attendees about its bike-friendly program. Under that program, for every car mile a BGI employee replaces by cycling, BGI pays 15 cents, with totals paid out in BGI gift cards. The store also offers a corporate wellness program designed for the bike community, which challenges participants to ride 200 miles during the eight-week program. BGI provides an online tracking tool, and each participant received about $90 worth of materials and equipment just for attending a lunch-and-learn safety clinic.

Carole Terry, who works in human resources at Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis, provided insights to several seminars about the company’s success and process for becoming certified as a Bicycle-Friendly Business. For example, Lilly employees can store their bicycles in secure bike lockers, and the company gives awards for the longest and shortest daily commute, and offers maintenance clinics and lunch-and-learns. Lilly helped fund an expansion of the Indianapolis Cultural Trial to make it easier for riders to cruise into the company’s campus.

As a result of the seminars, Bicycle Indiana is researching a tool that would provide a small series of maps that will help the casual rider with riding options in both urban and rural areas. A casual rider is defined as someone who feels comfortable riding on most greenways, some neighborhoods and parks, but would rarely think of riding their bike in an urban area, commute to work or run an errand. By planning a built environment with the casual rider in mind, communities should be able to increase the number of people who will consider riding a bike as transportation as well as leisure.

Bicycle Indiana is also researching additional educational topics about alternate transportation and healthy lifestyles as a potential seminar series for 2012.

Too often drivers don’t understand that bicyclists share the same rights to the road. Motorists pass dangerously close to cyclists, they don’t consider a cyclist when making turns, and too often there is a lot of road rage. Just ask Randall Sevenish.

He’s an Indianapolis attorney who specializes in personal injury law for bicyclists and motorcyclists. Not only has he represented countless cyclists who have suffered life-long injuries, but he’s also had personal experience with bike rage. While cycling, he’s had drivers get so close that the front bumper of the car hits his back bike tire, or a car filled with kids, who pass as close as they can to his bike and scream and laugh through the windows as if it’s a game. His wife was injured when a motorist turned and hit her, causing her to flip and land on her head. The motorist drove off.

A key to preventing these types of injuries is public education. That’s why Bicycle Indiana is developing a program for driver’s education classes with a grant from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and Sevenish Law.

It’s the kind of program Bicycle Indiana members have asked for. The annual membership survey reveals that the top issue members would like BI to focus on is educating all drivers, professional and individual, on the rules of the road as it pertains to vehicular cycling.

Beginning this year, Bicycle Indiana began offering supplemental resource material – Driver Education toolkit, free of charge, to instructors of public and private driver’s education classes. The toolkit includes a seven-minute video that may be shown during class or as homework via YouTube. There’s a quiz about the content covered in the video, and instructors also receive a poster to display in the classroom.

Students who pass the driver’s ed class and score 80 percent or better on the Share the Road Driver Education quiz may enter a monthly drawing for $50 in gas. Plus, winning students’ instructors will win a $100 gas card.

Sevenish said it just makes sense to educate our newest drivers, and instructors should drive home the share-the-road messages as aggressively as they talk about the dangers and texting and driving. At the same time, they need to understand that cyclists need to follow the same rules of motor vehicles, including riding with traffic, using turn signals and obeying traffic signs.

If you are interested in bringing the driver’s ed program to your community, contact Nancy Tibbett at [email protected].

When Randall Sevenish was a physical education and combat instructor for the Marion County Sheriff’s Department in the late 1970s He thought biking was for pansies. To stay in shape, he ran, did martial arts and lifted weights. Then one of the other police trainers (a cyclist) challenged him to a ride, Sevenish didn’t hesitate. He was after all, a bit of a fitness junkie.

“Mr. Physical Fitness got his butt kicked,” Sevenish said.

He quickly added cycling to his fitness regime. And, in 1998, he introduced biking to his wife, who was fighting for her life after a diagnosis of Lupus.

Both Randall and Regina Sevenish of Indianapolis credit cycling to helping her survive the disease, which remains in remission.

Lupus, an autoimmune disease is caused when the immune system attacks its tissues, causing inflammation, swelling, pain and joint damage. Regina immediately began chemotherapy in early 1998. She was weak, and had to rely on a cane to walk. When the weather started to warm up, Randall bought his wife a Schwinn mountain bike. He was determined to help her fight the disease.

“She didn’t want to do it, she felt awful,” he remembers. “I lovingly became her drill instructor.”

Before he left for work, they would bike. On those first days, she only could make it to the end of the driveway. But, every day she would try to go a little bit further. They would set goals, such as riding from their house to the south gate of the Marion County Fairgrounds, which was a mile. Eventually, they were riding 15 to 18 miles every morning.

While there were days she didn’t feel well, Regina said she just made herself do it. By fall she was strong enough to do the Blueberry Festival Bike Cruise in Plymouth, and then she and her husband did a bike ride in Madison.

“That would give me an incentive,” she said. “It made me feel so much better. It helped me take my focus off the pain and being depressed.”

It wasn’t an easy road. Side effects of some of the medications caused depression, and chemotherapy treatment and the disease robbed her of energy. But she also knew that she had to get outside, get fresh air and exercise to get her metabolism going to help rid her body of toxins. Her husband gently encouraged her every step of the way. Being around other cyclists also boosted her energy.

“Bike people are happy people, and they seem so much more positive, and that’s healing for anyone,” Regina said. Within two years her Lupus was in remission and she had been weaned off all of medication, including Prednisone, which lupus patients often take for many years even when in remission.

“Biking inspired me to challenge myself both mentally and physically,” she said. “It’s always a challenge, but when I get done it makes me have happy in my heart.”

Bike MonthSince 1956 May has been celebrated as National Bike Month. The third week in May is designated Bike Week; and the third Friday of May is Bike To Work Day.

According to the 2010 ACS (American Community Survey) report, of the 136,941,010 workers, 731,286 use a bicycle to commute, a mere 0.53%. Although this overall percentage is small; it represents 77% growth since 2000. Of those commuters, 26% are female and 74% are male.

Of Indiana’s major metropolitan areas, Bloomington has taken the lead from South Bend with 2.7% of workers commuting by bike, and many more females -- 43% -- than the national average.

One reason for the growth of female cycling commuters in Bloomington could be infrastructure. In an article published by American Scientific, Jan Garrard states:” If you want to know if an urban environment supports cycling, you can forget all about the “bikeability indexes,” just measure the portion of cyclists who are female.” In the same article, Jennifer Dill, a transportation planner and researcher at Portland State University, explains that “addressing women’s concerns about safety and utility will go a long way toward increasing the number of people on two wheels.”

Bloomington seems to have figured this out. The city has developed and continues to improve its infrastructure for bicycling, making it safer for all users to go by bike. Bloomington has its sights set on the Platinum designation for Bicycle Friendly Communities with a task force working toward the goal.

Here’s how Indiana’s other major metropolitan areas stack up in the 2010 ACS commuter report:

South Bend – 1.2%, 495 commuters, 100% male

Muncie – 1.2%, or approximately 324 commuters, 51% female and 49% male

Evansville – 1.1%, 550 bike commuters, 8% female, 92% male

Gary – 0.6%, 149 commuters, 100% male

Indianapolis – 0.5% bike commuters, 17% female, 83% male

Fort Wayne – 0.2% commuters, 100% male

Lafayette – 0.2% bike commuters, 100% male

Indianapolis is ranked 48th for bicycle commuting among the 70 largest U.S. cities with a 150% increase since 2000, a 444% increase since 2005 and 10% increase since 2009. Similar to Bloomington, there appears to be a direct correlation to the increase of bicycle commuters to the infrastructure improvement, education, and encouragement as part of Mayor Greg Ballard’s green initiative with Sustain Indy.

There is a margin of error factored in for the report. The full report can be found at: http://www.bikeleague.org/news/acs2010.php

Bike Month provides us with a great opportunity to increase awareness about bicycle commuting and encourage trial.

Here are a few compelling reasons to ride your bike to work (reprinted in part from www.bikeleague.org):

Improved EnvironmentThe bicycle is the vehicle of the future. It has a competitive edge in urban transit: it’s efficient, it’s economical, it’s healthy, it’s ecological, and it’s fashionable and fun! Too often overlooked and underrated, the bicycle is the simplest and most pleasure inducing way to be healthier while saving our environment and reconnecting with our community. When bicycling is substituted for short auto trips, 3.6 pounds of pollutants per mile are not emitted into the atmosphere. Ten bikes can park in the space used by a single motor vehicle.

Improved HealthMedical research has well established the fact that a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate physical activity three days a week can reduce incidents of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension and improve mental health and cardio-vascular fitness.

Employers in the community benefit from a healthy, active workforce. In addition to missing less work due to sickness, bicyclists generally accomplish more work. There’s nothing like riding to stimulate circulation, relieve stress, allow creative thought and establish a positive attitude toward oneself and one’s environment. Bicycle commuting is a great way to squeeze regular exercise into a hectic schedule. Commuting time can be used to stay in shape instead of sitting frustrated in traffic.

Bicycle commuters get to work on time more often and are happier and more productive. 80% of people who switch from sedentary commuting to cycling improve their heart, lungs and blood vessels greatly in 6-8 weeks, so they get sick much less often. For a 180-pound man, a 10-mile round trip bike commute burns 400 calories. For a 130-pound woman this same commute burns 300 calories.

Improved Economics (YOURS!)Bicycle commuting saves on parking fees, parking tickets, fuel costs, auto maintenance costs and transit fares. In some large urban areas, it is possible to save over $200 per month on parking alone. A new bicycle and cycling gear would pay for itself in a few months. Cyclists can meet all of their transportation needs with a combination of bicycling, transit, and an occasional cab or rented car much cheaper than owning a car. Since the biggest cost of automobile ownership are paid up front (insur-ance and car payments), some people can free up about 25 percent of their income by getting rid of their car or their second car.

Ten bikes can park in the space taken by a single motor vehicle. Since the costs of employee parking sites are growing, many companies are looking for cheaper alternatives. By promoting bicycling they reduce the parking problem, with happier, more productive employees as an excel-lent return on their investment.

In 2011 communities throughout Indiana celebrated Bike Month, Bike Week and Bike to Work Day by hosting rides, lunches, cookouts, contests and more. Check with your city or local bicycle club to find out if an event is scheduled for your area. Contact Bicycle Indiana if you would like assistance in organizing your bike to work event.

Savvy CyclingBicycle Indiana endorses and uses the bicycle education curriculum and materials provided by the League of American Bicyclists to provide educational opportunities for Hoosier bicyclists.

These courses include:Bicycling Skills 123 – AdultsBicycling Skills 123 – ChildrenTraffic Skills 101Traffic Skills 201.

All of the courses are designed to give cyclists the confidence and information they need to ride safely and legally in whatever environment they pick – trail, streets, bikeways, or around the block.

While many seasoned cyclists may not feel they would benefit from participating in a bicycle education program – after all, they’ve been riding for years – the course is tailored to the students’ ability, and every student should gain useful information from the class.

These courses are taught by League Certified Instructors (LCI) and Bicycle Indiana was co-host to an LCI seminar in the fall of 2011. Indiana is fortunate to have large number of LCI’s around the state, all of whom are able to provide training and education for your club, organization, or group. Responsible tips for riding Indiana’s mountain bike trails:1. Be prepared – Know your

equipment, your ability, the weather, and the area you are riding and prepare accordingly. A well-planned ride will go smoothly for you and your companions

2. Don’t Ride on Closed Trails – Whether it is to protect the environment or for ride safety, a closed trail is off limits for a reason. Riding closed trails is not only illegal; it gives mountain bikers a bad reputation.

3. Say No to Mud – Riding a muddy trail can cause unnecessary trail widening and erosion that may lead to long-lasting damage.

4. Respect the trail, wildlife and the environment – Be sensitive to the trail and it surroundings by riding softly and never skidding. Do not litter and never scare animals.

5. Stay on the trail – Do not intentionally ride off trail. Riding off trail can damage the ecosystem. Never cut switchbacks.

6. Ride slowly on crowded trails – Just like a busy highway, when trails are crowded you must move slowly to ensure safety for all trail users.

7. Pass with courtesy and care – Slow down when approaching other trail users and respectfully make others aware you are approaching. Pass with care and be prepared to stop if necessary.

8. Share the trail – Mountain bikers, hikers, and equestrians share multi-use trails. Remember: mountain bikers should yield to hikers and equestrians.

9. Don’t do unauthorized trail work – Unauthorized or illegal trail work may lead to environmental damage, injury or even potential trail closure.

10. Get involved – If you want to make a difference in your mountain biking community get involved with a local club, visit imba.org to find a club in your area.

Indiana has two organizations whose work supports paved trails and Greenways - The Greenways Foundation and the Hoosier Rails to Trails Council. Both organizations are headquartered in Indianapolis and their work benefits all Hoosiers.

indiana paved trails & greenways

Hoosier Rails to Trails Council: Since 1987 HRTC has participated in and advocated for rail-trails, trails generally, bikeways, safe bicycling, walkways, pedestrianism, public transportation, wise land use, and healthy lifestyles.

Originated as first proponent for the Monon (rail-) Trail, HRTC steered Indianapolis to acquire and build the Monon. HRTC has also lobbied for trail bills, Complete Streets, and safe bicycling in the General Assembly.

Additionally, HRTC has hosted legislative lunches in promoting state policies for trails and provides technical and advocacy support to persons in national, state, and local groups about corridors and trails.

The Hoosier Rails to Trails Council offers this most complete website about Indiana trails – specifically rail trails – including trail maps, trail descriptions, trail pictures, and also including statewide news, policies, video histories and additional information.

Indiana Trails Fund – Description This 1994 Indiana Corporation, 501-c-3 qualified, holds lands and funds for trail development. Has acquired over 100 miles of corridors and incubated more than six Indiana community groups, now actively building and/or managing their own trails.

Safety & Etiquette tips for riding on paved trails/greenwaysReprinted in part from our friends at the Nickel Plate Trail

SHARE THE TRAIL Obey all trail signs and rules.

DAWN TO DUSK Most trails are open from dawn to dusk. Verify any time/day restrictions in the municipality where you are riding.

BE PREDICTABLE Travel in a consistent and predictable manner.

SHARE THE TRAIL Use no more than half the trail; do not block the flow of other users.

BE COURTEOUS If you stop, get off the trail. Always allow other users to pass on the left.

BE RESPECTFUL Do not trespass on private property.

LEAVE NO TRACE Keep trail clean. Remember that if you pack it in, you should pack it out. If you see trash, please pick it up.

SAVE YOUR NOGGIN Wear a helmet for bicycle safety.

YIELD TO OTHERS Cyclists must yield to all other trail users. Warn trail users as you approach from behind, for example “On your left” or with a bell.

bike smart and stay safeAs with all outdoor activities you need to take some action when bicycling to prevent injuries and to make the activity more enjoyable. Here are some safety tips for bicycling.

1. Always Wear Your Helmet – Be sure it covers your forehead and fits properly. Helmets are for all ages – set a good example to others by wearing your bicycle helmet every time you ride.

2. Ride on the Right – Always ride with traffic.

3. Obey All Traffic Laws – Stop at stop signs and stop lights and obey one-way streets.

4. Signal and Look before turning.

5. Ride in a Predictable Manner – Ride in a straight line. Don’t swerve between parked cars.

6. Use Head and Tail Lights at Night – Reflectors are not enough.

7. Keep Your Bike in Good Repair – Have it tuned up by a professional bike mechanic regularly.

8. Yield to Pedestrians – Pedestrians have the right of way.

9. Ride Defensively. Follow the rules of the road. In Indiana, the bicycle is a vehicle and has all the rights and responsibilities of other vehicles. This means stopping at stop signs and stoplights, riding on the right side of the road, and signaling for turns.

10. Drink before you’re thirsty, eat before you’re hungry. Take along plenty of water. Use sports drinks for longer rides. Snacks to take along include cereal bars, cookies, fig bars, and fruit (bananas, apples are best).

11. Items You Should Carry: Identification, money (for ice cream or other goodies along the ride), tools, spare inner tube, bicycle pump. There are many different bags that you can attach to your bike that could carry what you’ll need for the day.

12. Plan a Ride less than 10 miles when riding with small children, those who haven’t bicycled very much or if the terrain is challenging. Plan stops along the route or have a destination in mind for the ride.
