Pre-College Scholars Program: Brown University Campus Visit Wednesday, November 4, 2015 Notes to students: Please dress warmly as you will be walking around Brown’s campus throughout the day, as well as rain gear (e.g. an umbrella) if the forecast is for inclement weather. In the afternoon you will have a short break when you may want to have a snack; please bring something with you or a small amount of money if you wish purchase something from the campus center’s cafe. Itinerary: 7:30-11:30am - travel to Providence (driving directions) o Bus drop off at: Brown Sciences Library, 201 Thayer Street, Providence, RI 02912 o Bus parking: at/near the corner of George and Thayer Streets (on-street parking) 11:30am-12:50pm (Main Study Room, Science Center, Sciences Library, 3rd Floor) - Meet with Dr. Haberstroh, Dr. Külaots, and Brown undergraduate representatives of the Society of Women Engineers o SWE representatives are: Anna Brown, Sarah Dugan, Mollie Koval, and Jenna Baker o Lunch will be delivered to the Main Study Room 1-2pm - Attend Brown undergraduate course Introduction to Engineering with Dr. Clyde Briant, Dr. Chris Bull, and Dr. Haberstroh (MacMillan Hall, 167 Thayer Street - across the small green from the Sciences Library, 1st Floor) 2-2:45pm - Break (Main Green or the Blue Room cafe at the Stephen Robert Campus Center. Students may also make use of Room 229, Robert Center Faunce Memorial Room, 2nd floor, which has been reserved for the group during this time.) (walking directions; Dr. Haberstroh will accompany you to the Main Green) o On your break, take a few moments to complete the following. Plan to post your responses in the Visit to Brown Reflection discussion in Canvas by the end of the week. Find the statue of the Brown Bear on the Main Green. Take at least one photo of yourself, a classmate, and the Brown Bear. (If you’d like, you may use #brownprecollege & @brownprecollege on Instagram & Twitter. Note that your photos may be shared and retweeted.) Find the Faunce Arch. Check out the flyers and posters on the walls and find at least one that intrigues you. What about it piques your interest? Reflect on what you have experienced thus far today. Think about something that someone said or that you observed that surprised you or shifted your thinking. Capture that moment in few sentences. Write down one question you have for Dr. Haberstroh or Dr. Külaots that you would like to discuss when you return. o Meet Dr. Haberstroh on the campus center steps at 2:45pm and walk together back to the Sciences Library for a 3pm tour departure (walking directions) 3-4:30pm - Physical Sciences tour including a visit to the Brown Design Workshop and lab tour, with Admissions Office student representatives, Dr. Haberstroh, and Dr. Külaots (depart from Sciences Library lobby, 1st Floor) 4:30-8:30pm - travel to Brooklyn (return driving directions) o Bus pickup at: Corner of George and Thayer Streets o Box dinner will be provided for the return trip
