A warm welcome to Twente for the 30th ADMA annual meeting.
Oldenzaal and De Lutte are located in Twente. Twente is a magnificent region located in the East of The Netherlands in the province of Overijssel. The Northeast part of Twente is known for its characteristic scenery, with a combination of nature, farmland, cities and villages. In contrast to other parts of The Netherlands, the landscape of Twente is rather hilly. Known cities are Enschede, Hengelo, Almelo and Oldenzaal. Both a technical university as well as a university of applied sciences are situated in Enschede.
Back in the days, the most important industry of Twente used to be textile production. Nowadays, Twente excels in innovation and technical science and products. Enschede is well known for its local football club, FC Twente. There are two large hospitals situated in Twente. MST is located in Enschede and Oldenzaal and ZGT is located in Almelo and Hengelo. In ZGT, a specialised headache clinic is present.
Oldenzaal originates from the early Middle Ages. It received city rights in 1249. For a long time, Oldenzaal was an important centre for the Catholic Church in the East of The Netherlands. This is illustrated by the beautiful, late-Roman St. Plechelmus basilica, which has been founded around 900 AD. However, there are signs that people were already living in Oldenzaal in the Stone and Iron Age, which is exhibited in the museum “het Palthe Huis”.
During the conference, you will stay at a hotel called “de Wilmersberg”. It is situated in De Lutte, which is a beautiful green village nearby Oldenzaal. The hotel is located on a hill and surrounded by nature. You can enjoy several terraces, a wellness boutique and several sports facilities, including a swimming pool and tennis court.
For this year’s ADMA meeting, the whole program will be in Twente. We look forward to
another stimulating meeting and another convivial visit.

7. Oldenzaal – Twente’s smile
Oldenzaal, also called Twente’s smile (in Dutch: de glimlach van Twente), is a municipality and a city
in the Eastern province of Overijssel in The Netherlands. It is part of the region of Twente and is
close to the German border. It received city rights in 1249. Historically, the city was part of the
Hanseatic League as a subsidiary city of the fellow Hanseatic city of Deventer.
In the city centre, you can’t miss the Basilica of St. Plechelm, which is a Catholic church that had
been dedicated to the 8th-century Irish monk Plechelm. The oldest parts of the existing building date
from the middle and the second half of the 12th century, but the history of the church goes back to
the 8th century, when the traveling missionary “Plechelmus” founded the first church on the site, the
Silvester Church, initially dedicated to pope Silvester and sometime before 954 rededicated to
Plechelmus himself (canonised after the elevation of his relics). In 954, bishop Balderic of Utrecht
founded a chapter in Oldenzaal
and expanded and restored the
8th-century church, allowing the
relics of Plechelmus used on his
canonisation to be transferred
to it. Since then, the Plechelmus
Church of Oldenzaal was held in
high regard - for example,
during the Middle Ages its
chapter was one of only four
outside Utrecht that could
participate in electing the bishop
of Utrecht.
Also in the city center of Oldenzaal, you can enjoy a visit to
the historical museum ‘het Palthehuis’, which was founded
in 1929. It is located in an ancient patrician house with a
lovely garden and a carriage house. In the Palthehuis,
several archive document and manuscripts about the
history of Oldenzaal are stored.
The Boeskoolmenneke is the symbol of Oldenzaal. It’s a
bronze statue designed by the artist Jan Kip. The statue
illustrates a men holding up a ‘Boeskool’, which is a white
cabbage. Back in the days, Oldenzaal was known for this
cabbage in the whole region. Every year, Oldenzaal
celebrates Carnaval and during that period, the city is called
‘Boeskoolcity’.
