ROWING AND SCULLING NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2018 HAPPY 50 TH ITHACA COLLEGE CREW PARTY DETAILS The last weekend in April, 26-29, was a memorable interlude. We celebrated the 50 th year of rowing at Ithaca College. It was the first time we held a major alumni reunion event in the midst of spring racing season. We used those dates for the Crew birthday party and it was a huge success. Early arrivers included all nine members of the 1976 women’s varsity 8 that triumphed at the Dad Vail Regatta. Their coach, Jerry Dietz ’75, hosted a dinner at the Boatyard Grill which was crashed by the current team’s senior class. From there, there were class affinity receptions at various locations on Friday night. Saturday dawned with Ithaca hosting three opponents for the final home race of the season. Probably the best spectator crowd we ever had! Then the Romer boathouse was transformed to host a Saturday night party that included a band and food-truck. Finally, as per tradition, a Sunday morning alumni row saw almost 60 participants, significant since several may have been hung over, and the weather stunk! The attendees included alums from Ithaca’s first crew (1969), the first women’s crew (1975), the most recent Spring 2018 was Ithaca College’s 50 th year of crew competition and the team threw a memorable party to celebrate. Additionally, the varsity women’s 8 had sparkling race results, a young men’s squad rowed a wild roller-coaster, and the year concluded with 13 graduating seniors and many new memories. (2017), and of course many from in-between! It was estimated that over 300 participated and it allowed for significant mingling between past crews and the current team. We dedicated a new 8-oared shell to our founding coach, Gary Kilpatrick, M.S. 70, who was present to christen it. We even had a prolonged visit from the new college president, Shirley Collado, who also rode in a launch to watch both the men’s and women’s varsity races. It was a remarkable season for the women’s varsity 8. They did not lose a race until their NIRC final where they earned a silver medal behind Bates. Their race time of 6:27 was the second fastest ever recorded from a stake-boat for an Ithaca women’s crew. The fastest, from 1994, was on the Cayuga Inlet. The second-place finish represents the V8’s ninth medal and fourth silver at the season ending regatta since 1993. Their regular races were 14-0 in their favor along with championships in the Liberty League and the NYS Regatta. They finished with a 17th trip to the NCAA Championship where they finished second again. The second varsity 8 went with them, and together the squad returned with the fourth-place NCAA team trophy! Overall, the women’s squad completed another stellar season with a hatful of victories and medals. Ithaca College Athletics competed in the Liberty League for the first time in 2018, which sent the top crews to the Liberty League regatta. Ithaca’s women won the team trophy and an automatic invitation to the NCAA on the strength of the varsity 8 victory and a runner-up finish for the second varsity 8. At States, the varsity won again, the novice 8 finished second, and the second varsity finished third. Finally, previewing what the future may hold, the novice 8 grabbed another silver medal at the NIRC. The novices were led by Rachel Dowd ’17 in her first go-round from the coaching launch! Here are the final line-ups for the five competing Ithaca crews; Varsity 8 – senior cox Maggie Broughton (Bowdoin, ME), junior stroke Savannah Brija (Lemont, IL), senior Karina Feitner (Cummington, MA), senior Libby Burns (West Hartford, CT), sophomore Libby Ryan (Barrington, RI), freshman Sarah Snow (Concord, NH), junior Sierra Keat (Grantham, NH), senior Colby D’Onofrio (Sausalito, CA), and junior bow Meredyth Busam (Denver, CO).

Second varsity 8 – senior cox Cat Frank (Poughkeepsie), sophomore stroke Liza Caldicott (Maynard, MA), junior Greta O’Hara (Niskayuna), senior Meg DiCostanzo (Colchester, CT), freshman Annie Brunner (Robbinsville, NJ), sophomore Allison Ritting (Green Lane, PA), sophomore Anna Shelley (Trumansburg), sophomore Olivia Southworth (Glens Falls), and senior bow Vic Demiris (Hackensack, NJ). Third varsity 8 – senior cox Monica Schaffstall (Lake View), senior stroke Emily Campagna (Brewster), senior Bailey Doran (Terryville, CT), senior Katie Lawson (Westford, MA), sophomore Pearl Outlaw (Charlottesville, VA), junior Ella Sarachan (Ithaca), freshman Abby Bealer (Montgomery), sophomore Kelly Csernica (Lewisburg, PA), sophomore bow Leighanne Sullivan (Westfield, MA) and alternates, junior Sophie Westfield (Cranberry Township, NJ) and sophomore Anna Diezemann (Brookfield, CT). The men’s squad had some successes particularly in the area of development. With only two seniors and two juniors on the roster, development was a significant goal. The team was larger than the last two years and should be deeper still in 2019. The varsity 8 fought their way to a 5-7 record. Not so good at first glance, but four of their races were lost by margins under two seconds. The petite final at the NIRC saw the leader win by 2.4 seconds, then 2.3 seconds separated the other five crews! It was a classic race to end a season of growth. The novice 8 showed glimpses of potential with silver medals at both the NYS regatta and the NIRC. A near identical roster should return in 2019 for continued improvement. A big thanks goes out to the new novice coach, Crista Shopis. A 1995 Cornell graduate, her son rows for the local Cascadilla club team and her enthusiasm is contagious. She is married to a former Bomber oarsman, Kendall Carpenter. This year’s novices will contribute significantly in 2019! Here are the race line-ups; Varsity 8 – senior cox Ben Zerivitz (Altamonte Springs, FL), senior stroke Stephen Cadoux (Westport, CT), sophomore Dawson Shyne (Salem, MA), freshman Evan Ormsby (Cazenovia), sophomore Hunter Flamm (Rancocas, NJ), junior Eric Stamer (Tunkhannock, PA), freshman Seth Ormsby (Cazenovia), sophomore Jack Lampman (Niskayuna), and sophomore bow Andy McCabe (Chatham, NJ). Novice 8 – (all freshmen) cox Tara Griffiths (Egg Harbor Township, NJ), stroke Andrew Wilson (Grantham, NH), Webb Sarris (Adelaide, Australia), Lucas Greenway (Mount Pleasant, SC), Ethan Maines (East Aurora), Thomas Massam (Greenwich, CT), Steve Van Hoof (Brookfield, CT), Rueben MacNaughton (Juneau, Alaska), and bow Lance Amarilio (East Norwich). Varsity 4 – sophomore cox Cameron Meier (Bethesda, MD), junior stroke Devin Mott (Holden, MA), sophomore Cameron Flamm (Rancocas, NJ), sophomore Ian Philip (Cranford, NJ), freshman bow Nathaniel Cutie (Baldwinsville), and sophomore alternate Max Sheiman (Ithaca). Novice 4 – (all freshman) cox Alex Rizzo (North Babylon), stroke Odell Sanchez (Lancaster), Spencer Cadley (Katonah), Colby McKay (South Chittendon, VT), bow Eric Bredthauer (Hopewell Junction), and alternates Janak Judd (State College, PA) and Vince Casiano (Norwood, NJ).

WRAP-UPS & AWARDS First and foremost, we bid a fond farewell and sincere thanks to our 2018 senior class. Those team members are Maggie Broughton, Libby Burns, Stephen Cadoux, Emily Campagna, Colby D’Onofrio, Victoria Demiris, Megan DiCostanzo, Bailey Doran, Karina Feitner, Catlynn Frank, Katie Lawson, Monica Schaffstall, Jay Williamson, and Ben Zerivitz.

Burns, Cadoux, Feitner, Lawson, Zerivitz, and junior Eric Stamer were commodores. Next year we will greet our new commodores Jennie Brian (sculling), Savannah Brija, Greta O’Hara (women’s crew), Adam Nasta, and Stamer (men’s crew).

The annual team award winners included Stephen Cadoux and Ben Zerivitz who shared the Tallman award and Karina Feitner who claimed the Women’s Achievement Award. Being members in the Liberty League included receiving some recognition. The league announced the women’s varsity 8 and novice 8 as crew-of-the-year and novice-crew-of-the-year. Women’s coaches Robinson, Greene, Dowd, and Keene were selected as the coaching staff-of-the-year. All-league choices were Broughton, Brija, Feitner, and D’Onofrio for the women, and Cadoux and Stamer for the men.

The NIRC announced an all-academic team for athletes who maintained a 3.35 GPA or higher. Ithaca had 20!...Savannah Brija, Maggie Broughton, Libby Burns, Meredyth Busam, Liza Caldicott, Vic Demiris, Colby D’Onofrio, Bailey Doran, Karina Feitner, Sierra Keat, Katie Lawson, Allison Ritting, Monica Schaffstall, Leighanne Sullivan, Jay Williamson, and Sophie Westfield from the women’s team, and Hunter Falmm, Andy McCabe, Dawson Shyne, and Eric Stamer from the men’s team.

2017 Freeman Cup winners in racing costumes and smiles!

Summing up the fall season, the men’s crew saw successes with a varsity 8 bronze medal (out of 25) at the Head of the Fish, and a varsity victory at the November Braxton regatta. Our novice 8 and varsity 4 also won at the Braxton. The women’s sweeps finished 4th of 26 at the Head of the Charles earning a guarantee entry for the 2018 regatta. Both sweep squads finished the fall with two full 8’s of novice competitors. At center stage however, was the women’s scullers.

It was the sixth season of competitive sculling for Ithaca Crew. Competitions take them to the Green Mountain Head in Vermont and the Hadley Chase in Central Massachusetts among other destinations. Their focus regatta though is the Small Boat Challenge in Mercer, NJ. where they competed with four singles and five doubles on a 2000m course. Ithaca athletes Colby D’Onofrio, Jennie Brian, and Libby Burns captured 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place in the single, while the pairing of Karina Feitner and Savannah Brija were silver medalists in the double. At the Head-of-the-Charles, the pairing of Pearl Outlaw and Jennie Brian finished 4th out of 15 entries in the mixed inclusion double event. Pearl is sight-impaired. She and Jennie recorded the fastest split time in the final quarter to move into 4th position!

Sculling team awards went to Savannah Brija as the “Most-Valuable-Doubles-Partner,” and Meg DiCostanzo, the Captains’ award for the ability to “Leave it on the dock!” Beth Greene ’00 continues to do an amazing job coaching the scullers, a particular challenge on the Cayuga Inlet!

Another fall highlight was the 45th running of the Freeman Cup Intra-squad…and while it was a full, 3.5k, length of the inlet head race with a dozen crews, it was all about the winners who romped their way to a 35 second victory margin rowing the “Roscoe.” The line-up was Alex Rizzo (cox), Adam Nasta (stroke), Savannah Brija, June Fortner, Mackenzie Morean, Sam Soroko, Webb Sarris, Madison Bess, and Liza Caldicott (bow).

APPRECIATION As you can see from the donor list, it was another inspiring year for the Crew fund. We sincerely thank all who have supported the Team. A special hats off to Frank and Elizabeth DiCostanzo for their tireless efforts with the “Ithaca Crew Mobile Feasting Tent.” So many family members help out on our road trips. Every travel regatta is accompanied by a picnic feast. If you have not been to a race in a while, consider this your invitation.

Pete Feitner ’81 led a “pass-the-hat” fund drive and promoted the endowment in conjunction with the 50th party. The endowed fund now values at over $430,000! Rowing will be at Ithaca College for a long time.

We are dedicating this issue of the annual newsletter to Lisa Russell ’11. Lisa attended the 50th year reunion party along with her Dad, Andy Russell ’80. Both rowed in one of seven alumni 8’s, a healthy number considering the bitter weather and early hour. Sadly, on return to her home in Boston, she was one of several victims of a car/pedestrian accident which left one person dead, and Lisa in the hospital with serious injuries. The Ithaca Crew family is thinking about her and wishing for a full recovery.

Chuck Greenblott ’73 (front center) hosted a gathering at the 2017 Worlds in Sarasota, FL. He was joined by (l-r) Jason Beeble ’79, Rene Dennis ’72, Dave Cox ’72, John Williams ’72, Coach Gary Kilpatrick M.S. ’70 and Ed Keagle ’73.
