Faculty and StaFF newSletter nov. 22, 2010 YOUTM Lane Last, professor of art, has been invited to participate in an international video art exhi- bition, curated by Kisito Assangni, titled "Time is Love.4.0.” In this 2011 edition of the event, works will be touring to UK, Switzerland, Netherlands, USA and China. The exhibition aims to consider the work of these artists as part of the global phenomenon that is contemporary art and promotes the new movements and trends in contemporary cultural practice. It is a showcasing opportunity for established artists who are pushing the elements of video and mov- ing image art. Dr. Charles Hammond Jr., assistant profes- sor of German, recently presented a paper titled “Of Exile and Redemption: Karl Rossman's Amerikareise in Kafka’s Der Verschollene” (www.pamla.org/2010/proposal/exile-and- redemption-karl-rossmans-amerikareise-kafkas- der-verschollene) at the 2010 Conference of the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA) in Honolulu, Hawaii. • The New Physics and Astronomy Faculty Workshop Reunion Meeting was held at American Center of Physics in Washington, D.C., Nov. 5-7. The Instructional Technology Center has begun its implementation of university’s adoption of the Turning Technologies’ (TT) clickers (student response systems) with several events to educate participants about the response devices and train both technical personnel and faculty in the use of the clickers. On Nov. 2, TT’s distinguished educator, Dr. Sydney Beckman, dean and professor of law at Lincoln Memorial University, explained why and how he used the clickers, giving a peer perspective to faculty consid- ering the devices. On Nov. 11, TT’s trainer, Stephen Sheely, conducted two hands-on workshops, and during the week of Nov. 9–11, TT’s implementation specialist, Lucas Benson, visited the campus to consult with tech- nical personnel, faculty and staff to familiarize them all with all the implications of the clicker adoption. UT Martin is planning a travel-study programto Germany and Switzerland, May 16-26, focus-ing on the events and people of the ProtestantReformation. The trip is open to the public.

Dr. Arthur Hunt, associate professor of com-munications, and Stan Sieber, professor of histo-ry, will lead the group in retracing the steps ofMartin Luther, John Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli.The group will explore old towns, historicchurches and the rivers and alpines of CentralEurope. The tour includes visiting the cities ofWittenberg, Erfurt, Weimar, Bamberg,Rothenburg, Heidelberg, Worms, Mainz, Zurichand Geneva.

The cost of the trip is $3,875 and includes alltransportation, double occupancy hotel accom-modations, admission to all planned events anddaily breakfast buffets. For those interested, theuniversity will offer academic credit in accor-dance with the trip under the Departments ofHistory and Philosophy and Communications.

Germany-Switzerland travel-study program

UT Martin will conduct a spring travelstudy to London and Paris on March 9-21.Among the highlights of the travel studyin London will be the Tower of London,St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey,the British Museum and the changing ofthe Guard at Buckingham Palace. Whilein Paris the group will see the Arc DeTriomphe, Sacre Coeur, Notre-Dame, theLouvre, Napoleon's Tomb and the EiffelTower.

In addition to the tours of London andParis, a day trip has been planned toStonehenge and Bath, and another to thePalace of Versailles. Also, the group willtake the Eurostar train from London toParis.

The cost is $3,425 per person. Thisincludes roundtrip transportation fromMartin to the airport; roundtrip airfarefrom Memphis to London and back fromParis; 11 nights hotel accommodations;daily breakfast; admissions to all sched-uled events; day trips to Stonehenge andVersailles; and the Eurostar train fromLondon to Paris.

The Paul Meek Library recently hosted a Tennessee Library Association staff development work-shop. Connie McSwain, of the Rea Public Library in Paris, led a session on the Tennessee SupremeCourt “Access to Justice” project; Steve Holt, UT Martin Instructional Technology Center director andwebmaster, presented “51.5 Things You Can Do With Google;” and Dr. Lisa LeBleu, second fromright, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences chair, and Dr. Teresa Collard, right, assistantprofessor of communications, presented a workshop on “Partnering Profiles.” Scott Cohen, JacksonState Community College library director, also presented a session on a new academic library Web-based tool, LibGuides, which is soon to be available to Meek Library users. Librarians from acrossWest Tennessee were in attendance and represented public, school and academic libraries.

AAUW plans holiday event

The objective of themeeting was to bring together new physicsfaculty who have participated in variousphysics education workshops before to dis-cuss and reflect on their experience after theworkshops. Innovations in physics educa-tion that were supported by physics educa-tion research with successful application insome universities were discussed.

• Dr. Roberto Mancusi, assistant profes-sor of music, has signed a contract withCentaur Records to record his first solo CD.While a specific title has yet to be deter-mined, the CD will have a “songs ofnature” theme and will consist of art songsthat depict animals and insects.

• Dr. Mark Simmons, associate professorof music and director of choral activities,was the guest conductor of the 2010 Mid-State Honor Choir in Nashville on Nov. 16.The choir is selective and consisted of morethan 200 high school singers from through-out the middle Tennessee region. The daywas spent in intensive rehearsals at ChristChurch in Nashville and culminated in apublic performance in the evening.
