It’s Time to Rhyme: Unit I
Lesson Guide: Rhyming with Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) Word Families
Overview: This packet covers four major topics in reading:
1) rhyming at the most basic level (CVC words)
2) reading CVC words and sorting and rhyming words by word families
3) reading the most common sight words (pre-primer and primer)
4) introducing new vocabulary (e.g. “sip, jig,” etc.)
This packet includes:
9 worksheets that deal with rhyming word families (the families: -ad, -an,
-ap, -at, -ed, -en, -et, -ig, -in, -ip, -it, -op, -ot, -og, -ug, -un, and –ut).
3 worksheets that have basic CVC sentences and beginning sight words where the
student/child must identify the rhyming words.
2-page book the students color, cut, staple, and identify the rhyming words (again, simple
CVC words and basic beginning sight words).
3 coloring by rhyme words worksheets
1 cover page if you would like your students to make a book with all the worksheets.
Reading Content Standards: Kindergarten and First Grade
K- Phonemic Awareness
1.9 Blend vowel-consonant sounds orally to make words or syllables.
1.10 Identify and produce rhyming words in response to an oral prompt.
K- Decoding and Word Recognition
1.15 Read simple one-syllable and high-frequency words (i.e., sight words).
1st- Phonemic Awareness
1.4 Distinguish initial, medial, and final sounds in single-syllable words.
1.6 Create and state a series of rhyming words, including consonant blends.
1.7 Add, delete, or change target sounds to change words [e.g., change cow to how; pan to
an].
1st- Decoding and Word Recognition
1.11 Read common, irregular sight words [e.g., the, have, said, come, give, of].
1.15 Read common word families [e.g., -ite, -ate].
Note on Rhyming: I have found rhyming to be difficult for many students; they have difficulty
hearing whether words rhymes (perhaps they may be visual learners vs. auditory learners, etc.).
Most students will need guided help with these worksheets. I have started Unit I at the most basic
level, with CVC word families. You can show a visual learner how the words have the same
ending to help grasp the concept. (Rhyming becomes more complex after CVC words, especially
with different spellings patterns and irregular words). This unit should help lay a good foundation
for rhyming. If your student/child comes up with words that rhyme but do not follow the word
family—that is fine! Just help him/her spell the word and explain not all rhyming words have the
same spelling pattern. I like to help guide my students by using the alphabet for the beginning
sound (e.g. what rhymes with “bun” and go through the alphabet for the beginning sound).
Rhyming is covered on state testing.
