Here, we take a look back at some of thebiggest product launches and keyannouncements made at the event, as well asreporting exhibitor and visitor feedback on thisyear’s show.

stand at Hillhead was Hippowash. ChrisMcCumesky, managing director, said: ‘Thisyear it’s been a breeze. It’s our fourth showso it helps that we know what to expect interms of planning and preparing for Hillhead, but, more importantly, the main showgroundis well managed and the event organizers arealways around to help.’

With a record 460 exhibitors, there weremore companies than ever before showcasingtheir latest products and services, making thisyear’s show one of the most logisticallychallenging Hillhead exhibitions to date.

‘We began working on our stand quiteearly on and, therefore, the build-up wentreasonably well,’ said Keith Ragg, generalmanager – concrete division at Liebherr-GreatBritain. ‘However, as one would expect froma major exhibition such as Hillhead, the eve

of the show was very busy. Other exhibitorswere getting their stands ready so therewere some logistical issues, but we managedto sort these out with the help of theorganizers. The extra effort was worthwhileand we are very happy with the presentationof our stand.’

TThhee hheeaatt iiss oonnExhibitors and visitors alike could not haveasked for much better weather at this year’sHillhead. The Mediterranean heat began a fewdays before the show and continuedthroughout the three-day event.

As Hillhead 2010 opened for business, thefirst full day saw thousands filtering throughthe showground and pavilions, taking in thewealth of sights and sounds coming fromevery direction. But the showground itself wasnot the only happening place to be.

During the opening morning, 10 years ofsuccess in reducing death and injury in GreatBritain's quarries was marked in a specialevent on the shared Tarmac/QMJ PublishingLtd stand, to which senior industry executives,

union officials and other key stakeholderswere invited.

Reportable injuries in the sector havebeen reduced by 76% since the 'Hard Target'initiative was launched in 2000, and JudithHackitt, chair of the Health and SafetyExecutive (HSE), commended the companies, trade bodies and trade unions for theirefforts. She also used her speech to rally theindustry in making a renewed commitment toTarget Zero, with the aim of bringing downreportable injuries by a further 15% year onyear by 2015.

Ms Hackitt said: ‘The quarrying industry hasdemonstrated what can be achieved when anindustry sector commits to improvement inhealth and safety. However, there is no roomfor complacency. As the number of incidentsdecrease, it will get ever more challenging forthe industry to make further gains. Reachingthe new goals will require even more hardwork, determination and the development ofnew approaches.'

Martin Isles, deputy president for theInstitute of Quarrying, added: ‘The industry hasmade massive strides in health and safety overthe last 10 years in particular. But to achieveits ultimate goal of zero harm, a stronger

focus is needed on the more challengingissues and to convince all stakeholders thatthe supply chain has a vital role to play.’

Indeed, in a further move to promote theelimination of accidents within the quarryingindustry, the Mineral Products Association(MPA) used Hillhead 2010 as a platform tolaunch its latest tool to help the sectorimprove safety. ‘Safer by Association’ is theMPA’s new site-based health and safety auditpackage, which is offered free to its membersto assist them in their quest to deliver a safer, healthier industry.

Staying on the theme of safety, the BritishAggregates Association was also on hand tomake attendees aware of its own SafetyScheme, which offers a professional audit ofsite, personnel and working practices.

Joining the MPA and BAA in the‘Information Village’ were other key industryorganizations, including the Institute ofQuarrying and MPQC. The Institute wasshowcasing its e-learning developments withthree education partners: Institute of AsphaltTechnology; Concrete Society; and Universityof Derby. MPQC was on hand to providedetails of its mobile plant, SHE and hauliertraining programmes.

GGrreeeenn ssoolluuttiioonnssWhile health and safety best practicecontinues to be the top priority for the widerquarrying industry, as demonstrated at theshow, sustainability and responsible sourcingare becoming just as important. Manycompanies are keener now than at any timein the past to demonstrate their commitmentto environmental issues, and a large numberof stands clearly conveyed the message that'going green' is the way forward.

AP Pavers, for example, had on display forthe first time in the UK Bomag’s ‘workingprototype’ hybrid-drive tandem roller – theBW174 AP AM. Powered by an electricmotor/generator and high-capacity battery, the hybrid roller uses a smaller capacity dieselengine than a conventional machine, whichlowers fuel consumption and associatedcarbon emissions. Initial tests on the prototypehave shown that fuel savings of up to 30% arefeasible.

Total also clearly sent out theenvironmentally friendly message to visitorsby promoting their array of business lines(Total Bitumen, Total Lubricants, NickersonFuel Oils etc) and how they can help

businesses meet current/future energy needs, which, in turn, will improve environmentalperformance. John Tuite, sales manager forTotal Bitumen UK, said Hillhead provided theperfect platform for the company to buildworking relationships with new and existingcustomers.

'This year's show has been a huge successfor us; in fact we think it's been better thanthe 2007 event,' he enthused. 'We aredelighted with the location of our stand, which includes a World Rally Championshipsimulator that has attracted many visitors. It'simportant for Total to have a presence at theexhibition to support the relevant industriesand it gives us the opportunity to discuss oursustainability strategy – which comprisesthree key areas: lower working temperatures;durability; and sustainability – withcustomers.’

Hillhead 2010 was also the launch venue forTotal Lubricants' brand new range of multi-purpose oils, Total Concept TP Star, specifically designed to help off-road vehiclesreduce fuel consumption and carbonemissions.

According to Phil Hindley, manager of theindustrial lubricants division at Total UK,

the new range offers not only a one-stopsolution that provides site transport managerswith two oils for all vehicle needs, but can alsoreduce fuel consumption by as much as 3%and help produce six tonnes less CO2

emissions per machine each year. Among the other exhibitors demonstrating

their green credentials at this year's showwere batch-heater plant specialists Mixlance, who put on a eye-catching display anddemonstration of their 'light on demand'igniter system, which replaces the need for anoil- or gas-fired pilot assembly in batch-heaterplants. Managing director Jed Smythexpressed his delight with the huge interestin the igniter and confirmed that a number oforders had been agreed on the stand.

'Even before Hillhead opened, having theigniter demonstrated in real time on ourstand generated a lot of interest from otherexhibitors,’ he commented. ‘But what pleasedme more is that during the show we sold atleast three igniter units with several morepotential orders to follow, and we've also hadoverseas interest in our products.'

Another major exhibitor fully involved in

helping their customers meet their greenagendas and improve their environmentalperformance is Volvo CE. They took theirlargest ever stand at Hillhead 2010,showcasing their latest range of constructionequipment and road machinery, as well aspromoting their core values: quality; safety;and environmental care.

One of the key initiatives presented on theVolvo CE stand was the Eco-Operatorprogramme – a training initiative that teachesfuel-efficient and environmentally friendlymethods of operating machinery.

At the show the company also announcedits distribution agreement with PerliniEquipment to sell and support the Italianmanufacturer’s range of rigid haulers in theUK. There will be four rigid hauler modelsavailable – the DP405, DP605, DP705 andDP905 ranging from 40 to 100 tonnes payloadcapacity

Val Ledden, managing director of Volvo CE,said he was extremely pleased with thecompany's presence at the show. 'We've hadvery positive feedback from our customers. They've been very loyal to us in these difficult

economic times and one of the key messageswe wanted to convey at Hillhead is thatwhether it's good times or bad times, Volvo arealways part of the industry, which is why we'rehere. We've spent most of our annualmarketing budget at Hillhead 2010, so we canget as close as possible to our customers andthis has been a very enjoyable experience.'

Likewise, JCB reported a high level ofinterest in both of their stands and their owndedicated demonstration area. The companydisplayed a vast range of models from itsheavyline range of machinery, as well as newpowered attachments including, on show forthe first time at Hillhead, the CB90 (40m3/h),CB70 (30m3/h) and CB60 (20m3/h) crusherbuckets, which have been designed to workwith the JCB line of tracked excavators, fromthe JS160 to the JS360.

Other newly launched exhibits on show forthe time at Hillhead included the Airtrac3200S, a versatile mobile waste-processingmachine that can be used in a wide range ofwaste sectors, particularly for small fractionfines clean up, ranging from 8-200mm.

Iona Waste Systems, described the launch ofthe Airtrac machine as ‘highly successful’ witha large number of enquiries coming fromcompetitors at the show.

‘Targeting the waste recycling and industrialwaste markets, the 3200S is a unique machinethat will, potentially, allow customers torecycle up to 95% of their C&D wastematerial,’ he said. ‘A success story for us atHillhead is that Finlay Hire have signed a dealto purchase a unit.’

Another exhibitor who enjoyed a highlysuccessful and rewarding Hillhead wasSandvik Mining and Construction. There wereno fewer than 10 new machines on thecompany’s stand, including the global launchof the QE440 tracked scalper, which was ondemonstration, along with a host of otherSandvik products. Hillhead 2010 was also thefirst public venue to mark the full integrationand rebranding of the Extec and Fintecproducts lines under the Sandvik brand.

Melissa Baker, Sandvik marketing manager– mobile crushing and screening, said thecompany had had one of its most successfulHillhead appearances to date. ‘Hillhead 2010has been one of our busiest ever shows. Mostvisitors to the stand were interested in ourmobile equipment range and we picked up in

excess of 800 potential sales leads each day.The response to the mobile range has, therefore, been tremendous – much betterthan our appearance at Bauma 2010.’

Among the other exhibitors with crushingand screening equipment on display at thisyear’s show were APR/Gipo, AnacondaEquipment International, Baioni, BruceEngineering, Dig A Crusher, Hazemag,Keestrack N.V., OM, Edge, EMS, Iona,Maximus Crushing & Screening, McCloskeyInternational, Metso, Stelex ConstructionEquipment and Tesab Engineering, to namebut a few.

SSuunnlliigghhtt,, ccaammeerraa,, aaccttiioonnA key attraction of any Hillhead show is theplethora of live action that takes place in theevent’s three dedicated demonstration areas, and this year was no exception. With gloriousweather and a multitude of plant andequipment taking part in real job siteapplications in a genuine workingenvironment, visitors had plenty to keepthem enthralled in the sunshine throughoutthe show.

In particular, the live demonstrations at theface end of the showground benefited greatlyfrom the creation of a new box-cut section

together with a 25% gradient ramp leading toa new bench. This not only provided a suitableplatform for a 46-tonne Volvo EC460 crawlerexcavator and JCB JS360 machine to dotheir work, the latter feeding material into thelatest road-going trommel screen from Stelex– the 500 tonnes/h Hercules HT182M, but alsoprovided a new and impressive backdrop forthe wide range of loaders and haulers beingput through their paces in the face area.

Among the machines taking part in theaction were a Perlini 405 rigid dumptruck andVolvo A40E, Bell B30D and B40D, Case 340 andJCB 722 articulated dumptrucks; togetherwith Volvo L350F, Bell L2606E, Case 1221E,JCB 456ZX and New Holland W270B andW190B wheel loaders. Also beingdemonstrated in this section were variousexcavator attachments including severalcrusher buckets from the Dig A Crusherrange; these were fitted to carriers of varyingsizes including a Hitachi Z-axis 359LL, VolvoEC210LC and Doosan 140LCV. In addition, aKomatsu D61PX dozer equipped with a TopconTM1 levelling device provided demonstrationsof millimetre accuracy grade control.

Meanwhile, at the opposite end of theshowground, in the recycling demonstrationarea, a variety of JCB loaders were

kept busy feeding a Powerscreen TurboChieftain 1400 and the brand new Maximus516 heavy-duty scalper, which made its debutappearance at the show. Not far away, HerbstMachinery were showing off their newCompac crusher, which was fed by a HanixH75C mini-excavator. Working in tandemwith the new crusher was a Compac 8140mobile screener, which was launched atHillhead 2005 and can now be found on manyrecycling sites throughout the UK.

Elsewhere in the recycling area, Baughanswere demonstrating their Jobber mini-crusher, which was fed by a Case WX210material handler equipped with a clamshellbucket. Output from the crusher was being fedinto a Baughans Middi Q barrel screen toproduce both fine and coarse products. Otherequipment on demonstration in this arenaincluded engcon’s versatile Tiltrotator systemas well as Dust Boss and Akkua Jet 35S dust-suppression systems from Inmalo and Comacrespectively.

However, arguably the most unusualdemonstrations in this part of the showgroundwere given by a unique pair of machines fromall-terrain plant suppliers Artcom Tradebridge– namely a Huddig 1260B (Muddy Mary)multi-tasking articulated backhoe loader in

tracked configuration, together with a MenziMuck walking excavator, which has the abilityto move around in a spider-like fashion andcan work on seemingly impossible gradients.

Just around the corner from here, visitorshad the opportunity to see regulardemonstrations of Titan Trailers’ custom-builtaggregate/asphalt trailer with its ingeniousself-unloading ‘walking floor’ system, whileadjacent to this were demonstrations ofvarious Allu and Dromone crushing bucketsmounted on carriers of various sizes, includinga Doosan DX340, New Holland E215B andVolvo EC210.

Close by, in the rock processingdemonstration area, Sandvik were puttingseveral machines through their paces.Working on its own was the new QI440tracked impact crusher, while operating in twotandem pairs were a QJ340 tracked jawcrusher feeding into the new high-capacityQE440 scalper; and a UH440i tracked conecrusher feeding into a QA450 triple-decktracked screener.

Right next door, Powerscreen’s new Warrior2400 three-way-split screener could be seenin action alongside a Pegson XA750 trackedjaw crusher, which was feeding into a Pegson1500 Maxtrak. Being previewed at Hillhead,

the 1500 Maxtrak is due to be launched in 2011and will be one of the largest mobile conecrushers on the market. In the adjacentTerex Finlay demonstration area, thecompany’s largest tracked jaw crusher, the J-1480, could be seen feeding the new C-1550tracked cone crusher which, in turn, wasfeeding a four-way-split 984 triple-deckhorizontal screen.

Elsewhere in the rock processingdemonstration area, visitors could see aTesab 10570 tracked jaw crusher feeding a1412T tracked impactor; McCloskey’s new C40compact mobile jaw crusher feeding an R70twin-deck screener, which in turn wasdischarging on to a TS3665 tracked stockpilingconveyor; and a Rubble Master RM100compact recycling crusher.

GGlloobbaall rreeaacchhHillhead is seen an important platform forbusinesses to get their products into theworldwide markets, and this year’s showcontinued this tradition. Pat Brian, global salesand marketing director at Powerscreen, aworld leader in mobile crushing, screeningand washing equipment, said he had noticedthat the company’s stand attracted moreinternational interest than at previous

exhibitions. ‘There seemed to be more international

visitors to our stand this year, which showsHillhead is more than just a local UK event,’he explained. ‘We have welcomed visitors fromAustralia, various parts of South America,India and the Middle East. Many of them wereimpressed with and showed great interest inour Pegson 1500 Maxtrak cone crusher.

‘As we’re an international organization, what’s been great about exhibiting at Hillheadis that the strong international audience fitsvery well with the way Powerscreen wants toposition itself.’

Echoing these sentiments was LenMcGarry, managing director of MoistureReduction Systems, who has vast experiencein solving dewatering problems around theworld, thanks to his patented cost-effectivepumping system.

‘We’ve had a significant number of positiveleads, particularly from overseas, and havetaken a good number of orders during theshow, including the sale of three pumpingsystems to a customer from Trinidad,’ heconfirmed. ‘We always see high-quality peopleat Hillhead and it gives us the ideal opportunityto break into uncharted markets abroad.’

Ian Ross, founder of Lansdowne Products, also noticed the presence of a high-calibreinternational audience at this year’s event. Hetold QM the response to his products, whichinclude a glucose-based detergent cleanerand tyre sealer for trucks and plant, had been‘incredible’. ‘I reckon we’ve had over 40 goodleads,’ he commented. ‘We’ve seen peoplefrom countries such as New Zealand, Irelandand Spain. There’s been a lot of foreigners aswell as people from nearer to home. It’s beenan excellent show.’

Hillhead also offers overseas companies anideal opportunity to break into the UK andIreland markets. Carsten Weiss, managingdirector of German firm Lintec GmbH & Co.Kg, suppliers of complete containerizedasphalt and concrete mixing plants, wasimpressed with the scale and variety ofvisitors to the show.

‘As a first-time exhibitor, we are verypleased to be here, primarily because we wantto make inroads into the UK concrete market,’said Mr Weiss. ‘Hillhead gives us the perfect

opportunity to promote our products to a widerUK and international audience.’

stands with lots of business activity. Professor Geoffrey Walton of PGW&A LLP,

specialists in the design, development andafter-use of quarries, said he was delightedwith the level of interest from visitors at thisyear’s show. ‘We did more business on the firstday of Hillhead 2010 than all three days of theprevious show in 2007. As a result, we havesome 30 or 40 good leads to follow up,’ heconfirmed.

Likewise, Owen Batham of recentlyestablished Elite Precast Concrete Ltd said hetoo had been taken aback by the number ofenquiries about his company’s Lego-typeinterlocking concrete blocks. ‘I’ve visitedseveral Hillhead shows in the past and hadalways thought of it as really just a plant show,’he commented. ‘However, this year, as a first-time exhibitor, I’ve been surprised by theamount of interest shown in our products. We’ve had about 40 enquiries, particularlyfrom local councils and waste-recyclingcompanies, and should pick up at least 15really good orders following the show.’

Heavy industrial vacuum specialists Forvac

were equally positive about the benefits ofexhibiting at Hillhead. Describing the numberand quality of visitors at this year’s event as‘excellent’, director Terry Dunwell said: ‘As afirst time exhibitor, we wished we hadexhibited at the show before. We’ve seenplenty of visitors coming to our stand and, asa result, received more sales leads than weexpected. Hillhead is definitely the show forForvac to be at and next time we’ll considerhaving a larger stand with more exhibits ondisplay.’

Meanwhile, Arbra Instruments, manufacturers of the new BeethovenSparkmaster shotfiring device, who havebeen to every Hillhead since the show waslaunched in 1982, said this year’s event wasone of the best they had attended. Companyrepresentative Ian Skinner said: ‘I would saythis is busier than the previous show for us.People are focused – they are actuallyinterested in something specific.’

PT Tech, manufacturers of clutches forheavy-duty industrial applications, reportedthat Hillhead 2010 had exceeded their

expectations. ‘It’s been the best trade showfor our company in its 27-year history,’confirmed vice-president Ralph Rogers. ‘Wehave actually concluded business on thestand – and you don’t usually do that at a tradeshow.’

MMeeeettiinngg eexxppeeccttaattiioonn As the hot weather continued into the final dayof the show (Thursday), ice cream, sun lotionand sunglasses had become the norm formany visitors at this year’s event. And judgingby all the positive comments from exhibitorsat the show, not to mention visitors (more onthis later), this year’s Hillhead, despite theeffects of the recent recession, appears tohave been a resounding success.

In the current market environment,Hillhead 2010 is seen as an importantshowcase event for future technologicaldevelopments. Alex Moss, managing directorof DUO (Europe), one of leading providers ofprocessing solutions for the quarrying andrecycling industries, said: ‘We’ve been tryingto show all our visitors the development

work that we’ve been doing since the lastexhibition and how the progress of the marketdynamics have changed.

‘The latest and most notable product on ourstand is the new Powerscreen Aggwash, which is a fully integrated mobile wash plant. It is a unique piece of kit in the market and I’mpleased to say the concept has been acceptedextremely well at the show.’

Also stressing the importance of keepingcustomers informed of new advances intechnology, Stuart Berry, burner technicianfor Ammann Asphalt, said: ‘Despite theeconomic situation, we continue to invest indeveloping newer products and supportservices for our targeted markets.

‘There is now a need for the asphaltindustry to be more sustainable than everbefore, and we want our customers to knowhow we can help them to operate in a moreenvironmentally responsible manner. Comingto a show such as Hillhead helps us to

achieve this by maintaining contact with ourexisting customers, as well as opening doorsto new clients.’

Indeed, many of the visitors QM spoke tosaid that the abundance of brand new plantand equipment being exhibited, togetherwith the constant live action displays in a realworking environment, are what gives Hillheadits unique atmosphere and popular appeal.
