Relieving Principal: Mr Gerald Buckley Deputy Principals: Ms Trish Hammond and Mrs Jodie Wellington (Relieving)
Term 4 is off and running and there is a lot of ac vity happening within the school community. Ms Byron is con nuing in her role at Oak Flats High School for this term and I con nue to relieve as Principal in her absence. Year 12 have commenced their HSC examina ons. The front of school building work has commenced in earnest. Students and teachers returned to school a er a very successful European tour during the school holidays.
Congratula ons and welcome to the two newest permanent members of staff at Nowra High School. Ms Holly Williams has been appointed to the Technological and Applied Studies (TAS) faculty. Ms Williams has been working within the faculty on a temporary basis so the transi on to a permanent status has been seamless. Ms Williams has already made her mark at Nowra High in the Hospitality area through the establishment of the Nosh Café with the VET Hospitality classes in Year 11 and 12. Mrs Karen Sharpe has been appointed as a permanent SASS member, working in the front office. Mrs Sharpe also had a quick transi on as she has been working on a temporary basis for some me.
Congratula ons to the NHS Years 7 & 8 deba ng teams who completed their final rounds of the Premier’s Deba ng Challenge at Bomaderry High School on Wednesday, 12th October. The NHS (A) team consists of Lachlan Webb, Darcy Hopkins, Mackewin Strachan and Josh Riepsamen (all Year 8 boys). They defeated BHS to emerge the undefeated Zone winners (3‐0). They are now going to compete in the Regional Quarter Finals on Wednesday, 19th October, against Smith’s Hill HS at their home ground.
NHS (B) consists of James Horner, Devlen Strachan, Rory Lowe and Luke Kielly (Year 7 students). They won their final deba ng round and ended the compe on with 1 win, 2 losses – however, they improved so much with each debate and should be formidable opponents in next year’s compe on.
Both teams performed and behaved excep onally well, Ms Woods was extremely proud of them and commented that they looked smashing in their NHS blazers! Good luck to NHS (A) team this week in Wollongong.
Local Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock visited Nowra High on Friday to inspect the recently commenced $2.8m capital works upgrade to the administra on block and entryway to the school. The improvements will have a significant impact on the administra ve func ons of the school, benefi ng community members, parents and carers, students and staff.
Year 12 students 2016‐2017 have commenced their Higher School Cer ficate studies. Each student has been given a copy of the 2017 Higher School Cer ficate Rules and Procedures, distributed by the Board of Studies Teaching and Educa onal Standards NSW (BOSTES). Under The Educa on Act 1990 (NSW) BOSTES awards the HSC to students who comply with the Act and meet the requirements in this guide. Students have also been issued with the Nowra High School Year 12 Assessment Booklet which outlines assessment procedures and policy as well as assessment task outlines and due dates. It is very important that each student understands what is expected and required of them to meet the condi ons for the award of the Higher School Cer ficate.
The excursion to Italy and Great Britain during the last school holidays was extremely successful. The students took full advantage of this incredible occasion, they asked lots of ques ons , threw themselves into the whole cultural and historical immersion opportunity, their behaviour was impeccable and very posi ve , they were helpful and mature beyond their years. They travelled to Great Britain and Italy for a total of 16 days. Thank you to Mr Morgan and Mrs Morgan, Mr Spooner and Ms Short for their very detailed organisa on and for devo ng their holiday period to give Nowra High students such an eye opening and unforge able experience. A full report will appear in the next newsle er.
