Dear Vet Med,

It’s hard to believe that we are halfway done with the Spring 2016 semester!!

Fourth Years are only 2 months away from graduation, ready to enter the “Real World”, to

excel and keep fulfilling themselves as wonderful veterinary doctors!

Third Years are one foot in clinics (only THREE more days of classes, TWO finals, OSCE,

and Milestone exam and we are DONE with the didactic part of our curriculum!!!).

Second Years are about to take their first OSCE and Milestone and finish up the school year

with VM608 before leaving for well-deserved fourteen weeks of summer break!

First Years know all about animal anatomy, physiology, neurology, histology and cannot

wait to apply their knowledge in the upcoming years of veterinary medicine curriculum!

Do you still find yourself wondering: “What is ISCAVMA?” Ask no more!

Here is a brief summary:

ISCAVMA is our school’s student chapter of the AVMA. Each veterinary school has their own student

chapter that functions under the Student AVMA (SAVMA), which consists of an Executive Board and a

House of Delegates (HOD) composed of two representatives from each member chapter (including our own). The formation of a national organization of veterinary students has enabled what were once isolated

student chapters to function effectively as a single unit on the national scene.

The Student AVMA coordinates student chapter functions, promotes the exchange of ideas and

information among students, and represents its members in matters that concern them, both as students

and as future veterinarians.

For more information on SAVMA, please visit https://www.avma.org/About/SAVMA/Pages/default.aspx

For more information on ISCAVMA, please visit http://vetmed.illinois.edu/iscavma/

Benefits of ISCAVMA membership:

• Eligible to receive various scholarships

• Opportunities to attend professional lectures

• AVMA career center access: provides job listings that match your resume and allows interested

employers to search posted resumes

• Opportunity to attend the Annual Student AVMA (SAVMA) Symposium

2016 Symposium hosted at Iowa State University (March 17-19)

Online registration was closed on March 1st, 2016. You can still register onsite!

On 20 December 2013, at its 68th session, the United Nations General Assembly decided to

proclaim 3 March, the day of signature of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered

Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as UN World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise

awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants. The UNGA resolution also designates the

CITES Secretariat as the facilitator for the global observance of this special day for wildlife on

the UN calendar.

World Wildlife Day will be celebrated in 2016 under the theme “The future of wildlife is

in our hands.” African and Asian elephants will be a main focus of the Day under the theme

“The future of elephants is in our hands”. Countries around the world are encouraged to highlight

species of wild animals and plants from their own countries, adapting the global theme to suit.

The world’s wildlife, whether charismatic or lesser known, is facing many challenges. The

biggest threats to wildlife are habitat loss as well as overgrazing, farming and development.

Poaching and trafficking in wildlife driven by transnational organized crime groups pose the

most immediate threat to many iconic species. Elephants, pangolins, rhinoceros, sharks, tigers

and precious tree species are among the most critically poached and trafficked species across the

world.

Baby Gorilla Delivered By C-Section at U.K. Zoo February 23, 2016 | by Josh L Davis

A western lowland gorilla at the Bristol Zoo Gardens successfully gave birth by a risky and rare

emergency cesarean section.

It's highly unusual for veterinarians to perform C-sections on gorillas — in fact, there have been

only a handful of cases worldwide, the zoo says.

The zoo said in a statement that Kera, the mother gorilla, had shown signs of pre-eclampsia,

prompting the emergency procedure.

"It wasn't a decision that we took lightly. Kera was becoming quite poorly and we needed to act

fast in order to give the best possible treatment to mother and baby, and to avoid the possibility

of losing the baby," explained senior curator of animals John Partridge.

Along with its own veterinarians, the zoo called in a doctor specializing in human reproductive

medicine and gynecology who has "delivered hundreds of babies by cesarean in his career." It

was Professor Cahill's first gorilla C-section.

Cahill called it "probably one of the biggest achievements of my life and something I will

certainly never forget."

The zoo told the BBC that the operation, which took three hours, was "very challenging." Zoo

vet Rowene Kilick told the BBC, "We couldn't see any signs of life apart from the heartbeat ...

and then eventually, she showed signs that she was going to breathe for herself."

The baby gorilla, who has yet to be named, is under round-the-clock care and is not on show to

visitors at the zoo. She's "doing really well," the zoo says, and her mother is recovering from her

operation.

The western lowland gorilla is classified as critically endangered.

First feline NLA endoscopy and stenting successful January 12, 2016

A temporary stent was placed in Kinako, an eight-year-old domestic shorthair cat.

A new, minimally invasive approach to nasolacrimal obstructions has shown promise in equine

and canine patients, but until recently, had not been performed successfully in a feline patient.

That is no longer the case

On Jan. 6, the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) announced the success of a surgery to

permanently reopen the left eye duct of an eight-year-old female domestic shorthair cat by

removing obstructions and temporarily stenting the left nasolacrimal passage. The cat’s owner

reports that her left eye now demonstrates a complete resolution of signs.

The lacrimal system is responsible for the generation and drainage of tears. But sometimes, the

nasolacrimal apparatus (NLA) gets blocked, and can get infected, leading to discomfort, tear

staining, and discharge from the eye, resulting in skin inflammation. This was the case with

Kinako, the cat that underwent the procedure.

With cameras now small enough to fit into the tiny drainage ducts, the UC Davis clinicians

utilized endoscopy (as well as CT and fluoroscopy) to identify and remove the NLA

obstructions. A temporary stent was then placed to reopen the duct from eye to nose.

The stent was left in place for two months to allow adequate time for the duct to heal in an open

position. Although Kinako initially had some persistent ocular discharge caused by an infection

in the tissue around the eye, this cleared with antibiotics.

Kinako’s left eye no longer shows signs of build-up or excessive tearing, and her nasolacrimal

duct remains clear.
