RNPW President

It’s All About Relationships!I love summer’s long days. Time outside with

family and friends - and fresh produce! But as all of us in the Midwest know, summer comes to an end; days shorten, and all too soon, it’s time to get out the jackets and return to a regular routine.

Hopefully, summer provided time for rest, relaxation and relationships. Yes, our world seems to revolve around relationships – making the office flow, attracting customers, and providing a happier, more fulfilling personal life.

In my previous work life, I formed many long-lasting relationships with educators. It made the hard decisions easier to reach and the easy decisions so much more fun. Some became friends and we continue to keep in touch! Now, in the construction business, I had to start from scratch. I learned so much the first year. It only drove my business partner, and husband, a little crazy! I got to know some amazing craftsmen and women; and now understand how they help us bring our customer’s dreams to reality! Working together, we developed relationships that once again benefited us both.

Developing and deepening relationships is one of the values I treasure most about Rockford Network of Professional Women (RNPW). I find this to be a group of women who encourage, support and truly care about each other.

RNPW is starting our year off a little differently, though this has been done in the past. On September, 22 from 5–7 pm, at Forest Hills Country Club, join your RNPW friends for a relaxing time to dine on delicious hors d’oeuvres, have a complementary soda or purchase a cocktail, renew relationships, and begin new ones. Remember your business cards and challenge yourself to have a few sentences ready (an elevator speech) so you can briefly tell someone what you do for your business. I have a friend who says, “People do business with those they know, like and trust.” Make this the beginning of developing those characteristics with at least three new women.

Relationships - it’s all about relationships. This year, let’s develop some together. See you September 22!

RNPW Member Wins Chamber Award

Rockford Network of Professional Women is proud to recognize member Janna Becherer, who was honored at the 2014 Rockford Chamber of Commerce Annual Women in Business Luncheon in June. Here are some excerpts from her nomination:

2014 Woman Business Owner of the Year: Janna Becherer, co-owner of Pathways EAP (Employee Assistance Programs) and senior marriage counselor for Brynwood Relationship Counseling.

The Rockford Network of Professional Women recognizes Janna Becherer as an outstanding professional and business owner. She has successfully started new businesses three times and in three different cities as she has effectively

transitioned multiple moves personally and professionally throughout her career. Her private practice, Brynwood Relationship Counseling, has afforded her much professional and economic success and recognition.

The transition of Pathways EAP from an individual ownership to a partnership is indicative of the effective and efficient business practices and dedication of its new owners. The clientele continues to grow; affiliated offices have been added to meet the expanded needs of the clients; services and programs are continually reviewed, revised or added to meet the demands of the client’s employee and management work environment; clients continually offer positive feedback for services provided.

In addition, Pathways EAP has successfully reincorporated its founding owner efficaciously into its current counselor base. This is no small feat in any business environment, but such a personal business as a counseling service would offer its own

particular challenges. It is a credit to all parties that this has been amicably and successfully achieved and testament to the professional capabilities of these business women.

Janna is a trusted coach who has helped hundreds of individual adults and couples re-build and repair their relationships at home and at work. She brings over 19 years professional experience as an EAP expert, a creative problem-solver and a warm, attentive listener. She practices solution-focused, systemic therapy in a safe and supportive environment.

She has served as a consultant to Caterpillar, Ralston-Purina, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital (now BJC), and McDonnell Douglas Aircraft to help make the workplace a better place. Before moving to Rockford, she owned successful counseling practices in Washington State and Naperville, Illinois. She is a Licensed Counselor (LCPC), a certified Imago Relationship Therapist and a National Board-Certified Counselor.

Away from her busy professional life, Janna has become very dedicated to the Rockford Community. She has served on the following local boards: vice president of Women’s Art Board for the Rockford Art Museum, Winnebago County Sheriff’s Task Force, past-president of The Literacy Council, policy chair for Rockford Network of Professional Women and Children’s Home and Aid. Janna has also been a sought-after trainer for the Belvidere Chamber of Commerce, Alpine Kiwanis and Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries. These affiliations mirror her investment and dedication to the other communities that she has called “home.” In every place, she has lent her time and talent to similar causes.

Janna is currently a professional member of American Mental Health Counseling Association and Illinois Mental Health Counseling Association. She is sought as a presenter and speaker for professional training and workshops and professional panels.

We are proud to call Janna Becherer a Rockford Network member! Congratulations Janna!

Rockford Chamber of Commerce President presents Janna Becherer with the Woman Business of the Year Award.

Is My Idea Worth My Time?

I don’t remember where I originally heard this, but one tip for innovating while still efficiently managing your time is to follow a “Rule of 2s.”

If you think you have a decent idea, spend just 2 minutes internally fleshing out the idea.

If you still think its a good idea, give it 2 hours to more thoroughly brainstorm and consider the tradeoffs.

If you still think its a good idea, give it 2 days. At this point, you might want to get other people involved for consultation and input.

Still? Give it 2 weeks. At this point you want to be fairly serious about coming up with a pitch and prototyping the product.

Finally, 2 months. At the end of 2 months, you want to be relatively sure you are fully committed and can make this into a business.

This progressive strategy for committing time allows you to explore new ideas while also constantly re-evaluating if the project is going to be successful and worthy of more time.
