PreSIDent’S letter

Dear alumni and Friends of elyria Catholic,

It would be a reasonable assumption, one would think, that anyone associated with elyria Catholic high School over the past 65 years has at one time or another heard the expression, “we are … eC!”recently, after the celebration of our opening school liturgy, senior, Therese orsagos shared an inspirational witness about her experience serving the poorest of the poor during her summer mission to the country of haiti.

aside from the fact that one could hear a pin drop on a rather sweltering morning in the hallowed auditorium, students and faculty alike received a vivid description of the charisms of elyria Catholic’s mission at work in the world. The presence of the holy Spirit made all in attendance long to exclaim “we are… eC!” My only regret at the time was that every one of eC’s 8,574 alumni could not share in this experience because I believe each of you would have been proud to shout “we are… eC!”

as every alumnus knows, eC’s mission calls each of its students to reach beyond the benefits of the excellence of higher academic achievements to the defining charism of service. This is precisely what Monsignor newton and all who were called upon back in 1946 envisioned for elyria District Catholic high School. The hope was to challenge our young people to witness their faith not only to their peers, but also to those with whom they work.

every elyria Catholic student past, present, and future, longs for community, friendship, identity, and a challenge that will take them out of themselves for the service of others. Please consider joining those who believe in this mission and wish it to continue by supporting this year’s elyria Catholic Fund so the words “we are… eC” may continue to resound forever.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

President

The Annual “Elyria Catholic Fund” Appeal gets underway in November.Watch your mail for more information or give online at www.elyriacatholic.com

Panther Prowl 3

The Monsignor newton Society was established in 2012 as an invitation to all to respond to the same appeal made to many of our parents and grandparents in 1946,

“When we build, let us think we build forever.” ~ John Ruskin

The only requirement for membership into the society is to include elyria Catholic high School in your estate plans. Membership in the society will help to ensure the school’s financial future and serve as an example for others to follow.

How Can You Help…You can help keep elyria Catholic financially strong in its mission through a planned gift. to keep the eC of yesterday and today strong for tomorrow, our endowment and endowed scholarships need to grow from their current $2 million to $5 million over the next ten years. This does not require a current gift unless you wish to create a scholarship or strengthen our endowment fund through a committed gift. In making a planned gift, there is no immediate donation, but rather a commitment that a portion of your estate will be given to eC in a manner far greater than any gift you could make today.

to request more information or if you would like to become a member of the Monsignor newton Planned Giving Society to help ensure eC’s future, simply contact the advancement office at 440-365-1821 ext. 22.

As we begin the establishment of the Monsignor Newton Planned Giving Society, we thank those who have already indicated

their commitment to the Society:

It was with much excitement and high expectations that we began this new school year. over the summer months there were many physical changes to the school campus, all with the students and school community in mind.

we welcomed two new faculty members to the eC family for the 2012-2013 school year! Mrs. Karen turk joined our Science Department and is teaching physics, applied chemistry and applied physics. Mrs. turk’s four children are all graduates of eC and she is very excited to join the eC community in this capacity. also, eC graduate, Corey taylor ‘06 joined our Social Studies Department. he is teaching civics and world history. Mr. taylor has been assisting us as a coach in various sports and is a recent education graduate entering the profession. we are thrilled to have both teachers with us!

as Catholic school educators, we commit ourselves to assisting our students in their academic pursuits as well as in their spiritual development. It truly is a blessing to be involved in this part of our students’ lives and one that we all take very seriously. we, too, must take a step back and remember why God has chosen us to be here at eC, what his plan is for all of us, which he had long before we were ever born into this world. our theme this year, “Be the You…You were meant to Be,” allows us to reflect on these very thoughts and to move forward in everything that we do to Be the best in discovering God’s plan for us at all times.

Please continue to join the elyria Catholic high School community in all the rich traditions that make it such a unique and life changing experience!

Peace, amy Butler ‘80Principal

once again, the summer months brought some much needed campus improvements to elyria Catholic high School. one of the most needed and certainly aesthetically pleasing was the replacement of the six exterior doors that have graced the entrance to the school on the “plaza” since its opening back in 1946.

“It was certainly time,” said eC president, andrew Krakowiak, when the gap in the doors facing the main school hall became increasingly wide. “It was approaching the point that a small-sized freshman might have been able to exit the building without even opening the doors!” having to chain the main hall doors each evening and trying to conserve energy were certainly factors in planning the renovation. The aesthetic appeal, however, has made the front entrance and entire plaza area look absolutely beautiful.

The project was made possible through the generosity of a couple of individuals deeply committed to the eC mission and students. Through a bequest of “Mr. eC” himself, Mr. lou rotunda, who passed away last august, and a generous graduate who felt Mr. rotunda had a great impact on his life, this improvement to our campus was made possible.

Mr. rotunda’s picture, along with a dedication plaque recognizing the annual “lou rotunda award” recipients, will be mounted on the wall adjoining the new doors. Mr. rotunda always took great pride in the appearance of our school and we could think of no better way to share his gift back to the school he so dearly loved.

to the graduate who had such great admiration for Mr. rotunda, whose wish was to remain anonymous, the eC community says, “thank you!”

It’s a tech-Know world at elyria CatholicYou would be hard pressed to find a teacher not using technology in the classrooms these days at eC. The school began incorporating new technologies and classes to meet the demands of today’s 21st century learners in fall 2005 and hasn’t looked back since. The first wave of technology came with the installation of Smartboards and computers in all of the classrooms. additionally, teachers received training and professional development opportunities on incorporating Smartboard-based learning into their existing lesson plans. additional servers and storage space to the tune of 12 terabytes was added (which can house the entire printed collection of the library of Congress and then some)! eC also virtualized its data center to allow for better reliability, flexibility, disaster recovery, and future growth. In terms of connectivity, the network now provides gigabit internal speed to every computer and a 100mb up and down connection to the outside world, allowing eC students to leverage all the Internet has to offer at the best speeds practically possible.

The It group also focused their attention on mobile technologies, which enables students and faculty seamless wi-fi access throughout the campus. The school acquired two portable laptop labs with 50 laptops and 30 iPads for classroom use, giving students and teachers greater flexibility to incorporate technology and classroom instruction. “we started with just two computer labs for classroom use, and now we have grown exponentially in our usage and access with these portable labs and wi-fi. Yes, there have been hiccups, but without them, we wouldn’t have learned what we know now, and we wouldn’t have been able to offer these classroom solutions to teachers and students. It’s a welcome challenge!” remarked eC librarian Mrs. Kristen Frank, ‘00. history teacher Matt Barber added “it offers us a lot of opportunities to use the same technologies that our students will be using in college and beyond.”

no doubt, eC president, Mr. andrew Krakowiak and principal, Mrs. amy Butler ‘80 saw the capabilities that these additional classroom tools offered and looked for further opportunities for faculty and students. new classes like Intro to engineering, CaD (Computer aided Design) and robotics were added to the curriculum to offer students the opportunity to explore subjects outside their general education requirements. robotics, taught by Mr. Marc amos, is an interdisciplinary subject that combines different fields of study such as mathematics, physics, electronics and programming (which are usually studied individually) into a single exploratory investigation. Using lego Mindstorm, students build simple robots, compete against each other and against the clock. CaD, taught by Mr. ralph

Jaworski, deals with basic mechanical drafting and CaD design for two dimensional objects. Basic dimensioning, drawing, and editing commands enable students to produce engineered mechanical drawings on the computer. In Intro to engineering, students explore the history of engineering, various types of engineering, methodology, problem solving, computer use, social context, and preparation to become an engineer. In addition to these classes, the science department, through a generous gift from The ridge tool Company in elyria, has utilized a virtual 3D program that brings objects to life. Primarily used in anatomy and Physiology classes, the students wear 3D goggles to view images that are projected in 3D and in color, creating an extremely life-like experience. The 3D technology is used as a precursor to dissections, as well as a post-assessment evaluation.

This fall, students and teachers are now on the cloud thanks to Google apps for education. all students and teachers can now leverage Google Drive to create Google Docs which enable word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, Google talk for Instant Messaging, and much more. with training from northern ohio research and training technology, faculty members participate in professional development segments to learn how to incorporate Google apps to enhance collaborative classroom learning.

Throughout all of these enhancements, eC has been driven by a strategy of improved learning that prepares our students for the new digital world while also practicing fiscal conservatism; ensuring the school’s investment is spent on true value-added technologies that improve the learning experience. a special thanks to Facilities Manager, Mr. Craig Petrus, teachers, Mr. Kevin Machovina ‘03 and Mr. Marc amos, and volunteer It professional and strategist, Mr. ryan Gorney ‘99, who worked tirelessly to incorporate all the new technology capabilities.

Four elyria Catholic Students Selected for theMercy healthcare academy

For the second straight year, elyria Catholic high School is partnering with Mercy health Partners to offer eC students the opportunity to participate in an internship program through the Mercy healthcare academy. This year, the following four students were selected through a rigorous screening process: Jhoanne Cana, Celine raible , Therese orsagos and Gregory nagy.

The program began last year as a pilot program designed to introduce high school students interested in the healthcare field to the rigors and realities of the profession. The program was originally designed for high school aged children of Mercy employees. however, since we share a common Catholic mission, Mercy wanted to guarantee one slot each year for an elyria Catholic high School student. last year, Mercy went above and beyond and selected two eC students to participate, rachel Pronesti and andy ruiz.

lisa Myers, Manager of Physician recruitment and retention, stated: “we were so impressed by the caliber of the eC students this year that we simply had to extend the offer to more than one student. If there were no constraints, we would have taken every eC student who applied.”

In order to qualify for consideration, students must maintain a minimum 3.8 GPa and have an interest in working in healthcare. Students are exposed to a variety of rotations, including emergency care, primary care, surgery, physical therapy and spiritual care.

eMh award for academic excellence

Four incoming freshman were awarded an eMh award for academic excellence Scholarship. The scholarship, generously provided by the eMh regional health Care System, is awarded to incoming freshman who place at the top of their class on the elyria Catholic Placement exam. The scholarship is renewable for all four years while attending elyria Catholic high School.

First Catholic Slovak ladies association (FCSla) Donation Supports elyria Catholic alternative Spring Break

once again, last spring, 57 elyria Catholic students went on an “alternative spring break” to assist the grief stricken families of henryville and Jeffersonville, Indiana. each student paid $500 to participate in this service project. It was simply an amazing and life altering experience for all who participated.

In looking for ways to reduce the out-of-pocket cost of the trip, eC president, andrew Krakowiak (“Mr. K”), with the help of the group pictured, submitted a donation application to the 2011 FCSla national Convention to seek assistance to ensure the program would remain a viable option for students who may otherwise not be able to afford the trip.

as a result, the school received a gracious “congratulations” from FCSla’s national president, Ms. Mary ann S. Johanek with the news of a $10,000 donation to help support the project. For each of the next four years, $2,500 from the donation will be used to help defray costs for students wishing to participate.

There is little doubt that the FCSla’s mission to perform charitable, educational, patriotic, and religious works for the benefit of mankind truly augments the mission and commitment of elyria Catholic high School to provide dynamic, Catholic orthodoxy and opportunities for vibrant spirituality for each of her students.

In expressing his sincere thanks to the FCSla on behalf of elyria Catholic and the student participants, Mr. K believes that this kind of support and commitment are absolutely paramount for the school to remain a strong and viable institution.

The 2012 Pot o’ Gold proved to be another successful event, raising more than $36,000 to offset the school’s operating budget! Chris and libby Sudnick were the lucky winners of the leprechaun tuition raffle donated by Dan ’78 & Mila reaser.

while there have been many people over the years that have worked to make the Pot o’ Gold so successful, none were more instrumental than our dear friend and eC supporter, Mr. lorne elbert. It was decided several months prior to the event that we would honor lorne for his dedication and service with an honorary framed cap and gown and

naming the coliseum in his honor for one year. It was with great sadness and heavy hearts that we celebrated without our dear friend this year, as lorne passed away unexpectedly the day before the event. lorne’s infectious laugh and warm smile will live on in our hearts forever and his generosity to elyria Catholic and the Pot o’ Gold will never be forgotten.

A LAbor of Love

Sister Margaret Mary McGovern, SnD, long time educator and friend of elyria Catholic high School, passed away last november 19, 2011.

to most of her former students and friends, (Sister Mary Michael, as she was known in her earlier years), had a genuine fondness for elyria

Catholic high School. She began teaching at eC from 1953 to 1958 and later returned in that role from 1960 to 1963. Sister would once again return to elyria Catholic in 1973 as the principal of the school.

The financial situation facing eC during her tenure as principal was challenging to say the least. Sister called on her former students, many now successful professionals, to help her. together they formed an endowment board and raised funds to stabilize elyria Catholic.

It was said in Sister Margaret’s eulogy “that few events gave her as much pleasure and satisfaction as returning to elyria for reunions with all those who shared the intense labors of love and commitment to Catholic education. She spoke their names frequently and with great pride.”

The entire elyria Catholic community extends its gratitude to Sister Margaret Mary McGovern, SnD, for her years of commitment and service to our school. her work was indeed, “a labor of love.”
