The Italian Lake District, is located in the north o thecountry. The setting is pre-Alps with beautiul valleys,striking mountains that descend to meet the lakeshores,pretty lakeside towns and meandering narrow roadswhich provide breathtaking views at every turn.

Lake Garda, the largest o the north Italian lakes, iscomparable to a small sea and is requently used bysailing enthusiasts. The lakeside resort oGardone isparticularly noted or its prousion o exotically plantedparks and gardens. It is here that the amous Italian poetGabriele dAnnunzio lived. Il Vittoriale, his Art Decohome and curiously designed gardens including a ullsize ship and small amphitheatre, are well worth a visit.On the south side o the lake, with a stunning mountainbackdrop stands the picturesque medieval ortress town

oSirmione. The Scaligeri Castle dominates the entranceto this historic town with its maze o narrow medievalstreets, attractive cas, shops and elegant villas.

The vegetation oLake Como is Mediterranean, alpineand sub-alpine. On the banks are cypresses and pines,on the sunbathed slopes vines and olive trees and on themountainside chestnut trees, beeches, walnut trees andconiers. The lake is notable or the prousion o fowers inMarch (narcissus and lily o the valley), in April and May(azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias) and rom June

to September (roses, oleanders and hydrangeas).Bellagio is one o the most beautiul resorts on LakeComo, admired or its blue waters, cleanliness and reshair. The characteristic narrow streets house many shopsand a stroll through the romantic gardens o Villa Melziand Villa Serbelloni provide a welcome diversion.

Lake Maggiore, the second-largest lake in Italy, stretchesbetween Lombardy and Piedmont and reaches into alpineSwitzerland. The lakes gentle sloping shores are dottedwith attractive villas and decorative gardens blooming withazaleas, camellias and rhododendrons. At the centre o thelake lie the three Borromean islands o Isola Bella, IsolaMadre and Isola dei Pescatori, which should not be missed.Cannero and Verbania are two o the more ashionableresorts on the western side o the lake, with beautiully keptpublic gardens and charming narrow streets, lled withsmart boutiques, caes, restaurants and hotels.
