to 30,000 tonnes/y of TiO 2 pigment at its Thann plant in eastern France. Waste acid neutralisation had been carried out for many years at the Thann sulfate-route TiO 2 pigment plant site, even before Millennium Chemicals took over running the operation. However, the 140,000 tonnes/y of solid crude gypsum produced by acid neutralisation was simply dumped at an approval landfill site. Millennium has now completed a programme to convert the crude gypsum waste into a marketable white gypsum product. Onwards from the beginning of 2003, the company has been selling 50,000 tonnes/y of this white gypsum to cement and building plaster manufacturers. Meanwhile, it continues to generate about 90,000 tonnes/y of red gypsum at Thann: this material is currently being used for “landscaping” at the company’s waste disposal site in Ochsenfeld. Millennium is investing 50 M for landscaping and protection of the water table at Ochsenfeld. When the company ceases landscaping at Ochsenfeld in 2008, it will be obliged to find new outlets for marketing or disposing of the red gypsum. Carbonate production is due to be increased from the current level of 30,000 tonnes/y to 37,000 tonnes/y. Siemens was recently awarded a contract worth 8 M over five years to carry out scheduled maintenance of the Rosignano plant. Chemische Rundschau, 11 Mar 2003, 56 (5), 6 (in German) Russia: Petrozavodsk – schungite, as a source of natural carbon black SC Carbon Shungite (of Petrozavodsk on the Karelian peninsula) is the only company in the world commercially exploiting schungite rock deposits. Schungite is essentially a petrified form of petroleum, in which the carbon is amorphous (ie non- crystalline), extremely active in oxidation-reduction processes and chemically stable in aggressive oxygen-free media. Schungite has sorptive catalytic properties. It can be seen as a source of “natural carbon black” and it is used in a variety of applications, often as a substitute for carbon black in rubber and plastic. Khimiya i Rynok, Feb 2003, (26), 36-38 (in Russian) Russia: Yaroslavl – carbon black The Yaroslavl Carbon Black Works currently exports more than 60% of its output to companies such as Goodyear and Continental. In order to cater for increasing demand, carbon black output here is to be raised from 155,000 tonnes/y to 200,000 tonnes/y by 2005. European Chemical News, 21 Apr 2003, 78 (2049) Singapore: Silberline – inorganic pigments Silberline Manufacturing Co plans to establish a new inorganic pigments plant in Singapore by the end of 2003. The company already operates a pigment plant at Leven in Scotland and two similar facilities in the US, one in Pennsylvania, one in Indiana. APCJ, Asia Pacific Coatings Journal, Apr 2003, 16 (2), 10 Switzerland: Ciba – DPP Ciba Specialty Chemicals has announced plans to invest SFR 18 M to install a new line for the production of diketo-pyrrolo-pyrrole (DPP) at its Monthey complex. DPP is a high- performance organic pigment, developed by Ciba during the 1990s. DPP is widely used in automotive and industrial paints, inks and electronics. The new line should be completed during 2004. The floor area of the plant was doubled to 80,000 sq ft. As part of the project, the company installed a tri-layer blow moulding machine to help bottle colour development projects. It also installed twin-screw extruders to expand its custom colour production capability. Ampacet can now guarantee faster delivery of small lot colour masterbatches (2000-10,000 pounds) and it can speed up colour matching to three days or less. Ampacet’s global sales were around $500 M last year – similar to the level achieved in 2001. Sales volume increased by 2%, but this was offset by lower average prices. Plastics Additives and Compounding, Mar-Apr 2003, 5 (2), 8 & Plastics News, 25 Feb 2003, (Website: http://www.plasticsnews.com) US: Schulman – plastics colorants A Schulman Inc has announced the closure of its dispersions plant at Orange, TX. The plant currently produces about 30,000 tonnes/y of black colour concentrates based on thermoplastic olefins, mainly destined for sale to the US automotive industry. There are 68 employees at Orange. The closure will be completed before the end of August 2003 and Schulman anticipates taking charges of $6-8 M in its accounts for the second half of the financial year, ending August 2003. The move should result in annual savings of $5 M onwards from next year. As a result of the closure, Schulman’s North American capacity will be reduced by 12% – from 225,000 tonnes/y to 195,000 tonnes/y. The company has stated that it will shift manufacturing of products currently made at Orange to other facilities in North America, wherever possible. This will improve overall capacity utilisation and cost efficiency generally. Schulman’s business has been seriously affected by higher resin prices, continuing competitive pressure and weak demand for value- added engineered products throughout North America. As well as announcing the closure of the Orange plant, Schulman has cut back on manpower at its Bellevue, OH plant: 11 job redundancies have been declared there. General inventory levels are to be reduced by 15%, with a view to making annual savings of $6-7 M. Meanwhile, the company is going ahead with its $3.5 M expansion programme for the San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico. (See also MAY 2003 5 FOCUS ON PIGMENTS
