Italy 1 week tour of Central Italy & 3 weeks in Florence NY Departure & Return Dates: Saturday, May 26–Friday, June 22, 2018 Summer Session 1 Art & Architecture in Florence & Tuscany This course will explore the principal architects and artists, monuments, and themes from the 15th and 16th centuries in Italian art and architecture. Emphasis will be on Renaissance architecture in Florence, but will also include architectural developments in other Italian towns. Food, Culture & Society in Italy This course is targeted toward students with an interest in Italian food traditions, culture, and society—what is generally defined as “made in Italy” culture and style in post-war Italy. Lifetime Nutrition, Wellness, & Physical Activity This course offers a comprehensive approach to wellness, nutrition, and fitness from a lifetime perspective. Course topics will examine how healthy lifestyles span across the continuum of lifespans and ages with a focus on how dietary and fitness needs evolve throughout the four main life-stages: childhood, youth, adulthood, and for the elderly. Theoretical core concepts of how dietary and fitness needs correlate to mental health and adapt according to each life-stage will be addressed along with a comparative focus on the Italian and Mediterranean approach. Street Photography This course considers how street photographers strive to capture the life and culture of city streets, searching for what Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the most famous street photographers of all time, termed the “Decisive Moment.” For street photography, many photographers traditionally choose to work in black and white, focusing the viewer’s attention on the subject by eliminating the distraction of color. This course will cover both black and white and color practices, as well as the use of wide-angle and long-focal- length lenses. QUEENS COLLEGE EDUCATION ABROAD PROGRAMS Summer 2018 World Religions This is an introductory comparative study of the world’s major religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and the religions of China and Japan. The course will examine a significant number of specific themes in all religions studied: the nature of this world and universe, the relationship between the individual and the transcendent, and the meaning and goals of worldly life.
