PugliaLocated on Italys heel, Puglia borders the regions of Molise,Campania and Basilicata and has coastlines along both theAdriatic and Ionian Seas.

The landscape varies dramatically from the beautifulGargano promontory in the north with its scenicmountains, forests of oak and beech trees and

unspoilt sand beaches to the fertile Tavoliere plain. Thecentre gives way to the undulating plateau ofLe Murgeand in the extreme south the dry Salentine peninsula.

Le Murges landscape produces a profusion of olivegroves, orchards and vineyards and is home to thefamous Trulli. Alberobello has the highest concentrationof Trulli houses the name derives from the Greektholos meaning cupola. The southern area of thetown, where the majority of Trulli houses are located,is an important UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built fromlimestone, the Trullis special construction techniquescreate an environment that serves both as protectionagainst harsh winters and extreme heat in summer. Atthe top of the cupola is a stone pinnacle in the shape of aball or cone and the main body of the building is alwayswhitewashed. Inside and directly beneath the cupola is aquadrangled room with doors leading to the other rooms;the bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. The wealthierlandowners of the region often constructed two or threeTrulli houses together to provide larger, more comfortablelodgings. Smaller ones were often used for the storage

of agricultural products. The origin of these characteristicand unique dwellings, which were built in large numberstowards the end of the 19th century, is still unknown.

As with all the Italian regions, Puglia has an excellentregional cuisine and is an important producer of oliveoil, olives, almonds, fava beans, gs, melons, grapes

and green cauliowers. Cheeses are a particularly strongpoint here, and types include mozzarella di bufala (softbuffalos cheese), caprini (fresh goats cheese preservedin olive oil), faggottini (smoked cheeses of Foggia) andburrata (creamy soft cows cheese).

Steeped in myths and legends, Puglias history dates backto the civilisation of Magna Grecia. Many heirlooms ofthis period can be found in the museum ofTaranto. Theregion has a wealth of splendid cathedrals and ancientsites including the Castel del Monte in Andria the mostextraordinary of all Puglias castles; The Greek and Romanruins ofEgnasia, boasting an acropolis, amphitheatreand remains of tombs and ancient roads; The NormanCathedral in Trani and the Baroque buildings and Romanamphitheatre ofLecce, dubbed Florence of the South.This is a region which has much to offer and which has yetto be discovered by the majority of visitors to Italy.
