Italy Today: Northern Italy

Fertile soil, plenty of water, and good natural resources provide for a strong economy.Industries allow for great jobs.Railways, tunnels, and highways through the Alps make travel in the area easy.The economy of Northern Italy is strong b/c of good natural resources, fertile soil, large industries for jobs, and plenty of roads and tunnels.

Italy Today: Southern Italy

Southern Italy is the poorer half of the country.The gov’t has offered incentives to help bring jobs to the area. (An incentive is something that leads people to follow a certain course of action).To encourage businesses in Southern Italy, the government has lowered taxes on businesses.

The break-up of Roman Empire

The collapse of the Roman empire meant that there was no longer a government in large areas. When the Roman empire fell apart, city-states developed to help govern large areas.

Trading with the city-states

Merchants in these city-states sailed to many places and brought back exotic foods, such as spices for trade. (Marco Polo)These merchants earned a great amount of profit from the Spice Trade, and sponsored artists.The Renaissance was born.(view short film about the Renaissance)

At the same time the United States divided and fought itself in the Civil War (1861), Italy was fighting to be one country.Italy became a country in 1861, only to be ruled by a dictator in the 1920s.The dictator, Mussolini, joined Adolf Hitler to fight much of the world in World War II.(1939-1945)
