ITALIAN wINE: AN ENDLESS ADVENTURE

INTRODUCTION

PART 1 – VITIS VINIfERA AND ARChAEOLOgy

Archaeology, wine and molecular genetics: disciplines that are apparently not related at all, are actually very efficient instruments enabling us to understand the identity and the character of Italian wine.Italian wine civilization has preserved vibrant testimonies of the past in its more ancient vineyards, where the grapes variety represented lead back to the early domestication and winemaking processes of Etruscan, Greek and Roman ages. The archeological remains discovered in various areas, especially on the Tirrenica coast, dating from the Bronze age (first millenium), show the presence of structures for wine production (millstones) and for wine transportation (vinarie amphoras) from the Greek-Aegean matrix; as well as the first examples of wild grapes in domestication phase. The rich funeral gears enrich this wine culture and the symposium thalassocracy Etruscan culture.Odissea stories contributed to spread wine myth and its ritual consumption. Ulisse travels between Sicily and Campania cost identifies places where wines are still produced today; varietal grapes and winemaking technics date back those from these ancient origins, in natural landscape scenes and archaeological reminders of great emotional impact.

ThE wINES fROM ThE EMPIRE BETwEEN ThE BORDERS Of LATIUM AND CAMPANIA

June 17 – 9:30 – 10:30

Speaker: Attilio SCIENZA

Greeks might have created the myth of wine associated with Dionysus, but the Roman Empire has been attributed the merit of spreading wine knowledge in Europa.During antique Italy the most famous places for wine, tailored for wealthy Romans cellars, were located between the southern Lazio and north Campania. Georgic authors, like Plinio, described in detail the most famous cru, indicating the varieties grown, the techniques of production and the sensory characteristics of the wines that were produced. They were full of indications about the preservability of the various wines, the best choices for public and private ceremonies or for foods: a real and truth wine guidebook ‘ante litteram’ - before the letter.Usually the chosen place for vine cultivation paid attention to the significant “genius loci” - spirit of the place - which was usually related to some foundation myths (Ulysses, Aeneas, Diomede, etc) and revered by construction especially ostentatious, almost meaning a direct relationship between myth references and wine quality. In many of those places where you still find these noble villas ruins, we produce the wines of “this time”, on the same soils, with the same grape varieties. What has changed, of course, is the wine-making process.

ITALIAN wINE: AN ENDLESS ADVENTURE

PART 2 – wINE IN hISTORy

The great ways that have been traced on earth and sea during the salient phases of human history, contributing to the acquaintance and civilisation development, have through the varietal circulation diffused the wine culture and favorised the introduction of some varietals with specific virtues. Often these wine grapes through crossing with wild vines have originated new varieties. Many famous Italian wines are the result of mercantile travellers activity who from Mediter-ranean oriental region introduced these wines to the rich cities in Continental Europe.Along these routes that have crossed Italy from north to south and east to the west, from one sea to another, wine grapes were spread like Aglianico, able to give long-lived transportable wines, or the Amarone, where they valued a medieval culture that saw the present Veronese wines on all the European courts table. But Venice Republic dominated the seas and the european markets for almost 500 years with the Malvasias and Vinsanto trade.Nowadays, remains from that tradition are important testimonies of ancient Venetian viticulture and in the lagoon islands the last acres of those vineyards can be found.

DIONySUS’ PAThS: ThE OLD ROADS Of wINEJune 17 – 11:30 – 12:30

Speaker: Attilio SCIENZA

The Campania has represented one of the most popular destinations for Eubei and Foceis people travelling in search of new docks to sell their goods. The first Emporion and the first Greek colonies in the West were founded in fact in Naples and Ischia. The wine represented certainly one of the products which were mostly exchanged as testified by amphorae findings, furnishings from symposium, literary documents, but they are especially original varieties that witness these ancient relationships. There are tens ancient Campagnia varieties that have close kinship with the Greek ones.Aglianico, which etymological root leaves no doubt about its hellenic matrix, is certainly the variety who illustrates this ancient bond with the land of origin, through its austere sensory profile and its great aging capacity. The territories that best express this wine are those of Taurasi from volcanic origins, the ‘Beneventano’, born from marine deposits of the secondary era and the Vulture, where the vineyards were planted on the ruins of an ancient volcano attended in medieval times by Frederick II of Swabia who exercised on its slopes falconry art.

ITALIAN wINE: AN ENDLESS ADVENTURE

PART 3 – ThE wINE Of NATURAL PARKS

Parks represent in Italy not only places where nature has remained intact and must be preserved and protected due to its fragility, but they also are the testimony of a secular labour that whole generations have conducted with enormous difficulties to tear off a bit of an arable land from the slopes of mountains, often through daring terraces, where the main cultivation was vines: only the pleasure that wine gave could repair those pains.Alongside this biodiversity made with flora and fauna richness, an important cultural biodiversity, well represented by the walls techniques construction, shelters for tools, rural network and walls’ types, indicates precisely the geological origin of those soils.Conservation strategies of those places, very onerous nowadays due to maintenance cost, allowed only tourist use, local food, and of course wines, who once again are all true witnesses of the past. From the ‘5 Terre’ Park, to the Adamello Brenta Park in the Alps tridentine, from the Uccellina Park in Maremma up to Vesuvius Park, Zingaro Park or Etna one in Sicily, memory wines can bring us back, now pleasantly, to our ancestors’ labor. For those places, environment fragility and stringent rules imposed by the Administration, a viticulture strongly oriented to environmentally sustainable productions is implemented with a precise use of chemistry and special solutions for natural land fertility conservation. Do not forget the role played by Parks for biodiversity of wild vines conservation, present only in these protected areas, where those studies allowed to reconstruct the cultivated vines origins.

PARK CINQUE TERRE: whERE VINE BECOMES hEROICJune 17 – 14:00 – 15:00

Speaker: Barbara TAMBURINICinque Terre with its 4,300 acres is Italy’s smallest National Park. An oasis that over the course of time has still preserved its pristine nature. The landscape, formed by rocks of different origin and age, is marked by a sloping of the land and a lack of flat sections.Over the course of a millenium the human presence has left it’s mark on the landscape; by cutting the steep slopes of the hills to obtain strips of arable land, the so-called Ciàn, supported by approximately seven miles of dry-stone walls, the length of the Great Wall of China. Man intervention has thus led to the creation of terraced architecture of an area developed in height, making the landscape very unusual man-made and here is why it is called the Park made by Man.The grapes, olives and citrus fruits, the main crops of the area in question, with a prevalence of viticulture, were cultivated with the ancient wisdom of centuries ago.The Park is the cradle of a project whose goal is the creation of a permanent monitoring center on the erosion of Italian and Mediterranean wine heritage for the preservation of wild vines and autochthonous grape varieties, so important from the points of view of history, culture and especially on the scientific aspect. In this workshop we will present wines that offer an insight into the Ligurian landscape of vineyards, so strongly influenced by the peculiarities of the territory and the work of man.

ITALIAN wINE: AN ENDLESS ADVENTURE

PART 4 – wINE AND TERROIR: A UNIQUE DUO

The “territory” concept conjugated with the wine one, constitutes a cultural and symbolic potential, extraordinary rich with great complexity. In the first instance we think about the wine.A product that can claim a few thousands years of history, for which thousands of kilometers on land and sea have been opened. It is something more than a chemical product with some sensory characters. It is difficult to think about something that has existed such a long time and in so many cultures, actually so intimately interlaced in human life, history, and culture. If we should try to define in general what is a territory, we would face an immense multiplicity of meanings. A territory can be identifiable when it is the center of some homogeneities. As a physical space (geographical limits), as a space with a certain human presence all along the time, like an unit carrying values, history, culture, the consequences of dynamics and stratification during story of human presence. To communicate around wine means to offer: a product, a service, an articulate system constituted by a careful interaction of “material and measurable” elements with “immaterial and symbolic” elements that rotate around the wine culture and territories quality. We are in presence of a strong demand for innovation, but with rising attention paid to wines characterized by strong territorial identity and wide historico-cultural gratefulness, with sharp attention to the “ancient varietals” (radication on the territory). The development of the qualitative and quantitative growing wine world, especially in economic systems, scientific and cultural, more and more global, passes through wine territories valorization. At the center of this territorial system, of its valorization and promotion, there is naturally the wine company in its almost infinite dimensional entrepreneurial declinations, qualitative and organizational. And it is through the patient and intelligent human labour in wine landscape ‘construction’ that quality increase production has been accompanied systematically.

ThE LIVELy SIDE Of PIEDMONTJune 17 – 16:00 – 17:00

Speaker: giuseppe MARTELLI

Piedmont is a paradise for lovers of good food and good wine. The French influence on the peasant’s Piedmontese tradition has fostered an identity not easily duplicated, refined, with strong roots in its territory and spread through all sections of its population. This motherland of good living is, today, still capable of welcoming tourists to the historic bars of it’s cities with inimitable products such as truffles and chocolate. Our seminar gives the opportunity of a virtual trip amongst the sweet hills of Langhe and the area of Asti in a tasting of wines of these unforgettable lands.
