SS Norge's Last Voyage
Extracts from the article:"Disruption of Norwegian Mail in Autumn 1855"by Georg Størmer in 'THE LONDON PHILATELIST' (June 2012)
The Bergen Steamship Company had two passenger ships, SS Bergen and SS Norge sailing from Bergen to Hamburg with alternate weekly departures in 1855. Due to its efficiency the Bergen-Hamburg line had become the most impor-tant postal link between the west coast of Norway and the continent. Everything went well until disaster struck in the early hours of September 10th.
We quote, in the English translation by Georg Størmer, from the newspaper Christianssands Stiftsavis 12 September 1855:
In the early hours of Monday SS Norge left the Harbour about one o'clock in order to continue its voyage to Hamburg. The weather was nice and clear and it was a moonlit night. Out in the fjord, approximately between Kin and Dversøen she hit the SS Bergen coming from Hamburg, and since both vessels went at full speed, the collision was so forceful that SS Norge, which was hit at the waterline on the port side near the mast, was filled with water and sank after a few minutes....When water entered the hull of the ship it created an explosion that lifted and broke the deck. In this incident several lives were lost. As far as we know there were about 100 people on board, including the crew of about 30 persons. Some were saved by the SS Bergen, some in small boats that hurriedly came to help. Others survived by swimming ashore and five dead bodies were taken up. Of the SS Norge's crew and passengers there are, as far as we have understood 31 missing. The mailbag for Hamburg was salvaged near Oxø and was carried by SS St. Olaf which for that reason departed at 1 o'clock....Where the SS Norge sank, there should be over 100 fathoms (180 metres) of water. In the collision the SS Bergen had its bow broken in at the waterline and it was very fortunate that the weather was so good, with few waves in the fjord, and that the distance to port was so short, otherwise it would probably not have been saved...
The cover (lot 363) was sent from the Town Secretary in Bergen, Christen Svensen to his daughter Amalie Gotharda Svensen, who was studying piano music at the world famous Royal Conservatory of Music in Leipzig, Saxony.
This is the only recorded letter from the SS Norge disaster. Its discovery was described by the author in an article in Norsk Filatelistisk Tidsskrift in 2009. The cover has traces of water damage and was apparently in the mailbag thrown overboard from the SS Norge by the postal clerk Mr. Kahrs before he lost his life. Thanks to the newly acquired Christiania-Hamburg steamer SS St. Olaf arriving in Christianssand, the letter came safely to Hamburg on Wednesday 12 September, a delay of only one day compared to the normal schedule. It is interesting to note that Miss Svensen wrote on the front that the letter was received the '13th and answered the 13th and 20th September'. She had probably been informed about the disaster when the letter arrived and immediately wrote a note to her father.

363 1855, Coat of Arms 4 skilling blue, horizontal strip of 4 and horizontal pair (pos. C31-34 and C11-12) used with clear grid cancels on envelope with adjacent blue cds. "BERGEN 7/9 1855" to Leipzig in Saxony, showing on front boxed "Aus Dänemark", on reverse Hamburg transit marks of 12.9. and Leipzig arrival mark; the cover was transported with the steamship "Norge" from Bergen bound for Hamburg; in the area of Kristiansand the "Norge" collided with her fleet mate "Bergen" and sunk with the loss of 40 lives. Accor-ding to the local newspaper 'Kristianssands Steftsavis' of the following day, the mail bag for Hamburg was salvaged near Oxö and was carried by SS 'Sankt Olaf" further to Hamburg. The cover shows some minor water staining, as to be expected, front and back of the cover are separated, the lower right corner and somewhat strengthened; the franking in fine condition. A most attractive and rare franking of Norway no. 1 and an amazing piece of Norwegian postal history being the only recorded letter from the SS Norge disa-ster. The aircraft, Boing 747-246B with 123 passengers and 22 crew members was highjacked by a member of the Japanese Red Army and four members of the Popular Front of the Liberation of Palestine shortly after take-off from Schiphol. The plane was re-directed to Dubai and after several days further to Damascus and then Benghazi in Lybia where after the passen-gers and crew members were released. The hijackers blew-up the aircraft. This sole letter survived and was delivered to the recipient in Tokyo with a formal letter of the Tokyo airport post master.
