MESSAGGIO DEL PRESIDENTECari Amici,

Our first Caffé Italia Night was a complete success as we enjoyed some fine food, wine and fellowship at Villa Ravenna. The owners, Yani and Sergio Orioli, were very gracious and accommodating for our club. I look forward to trying some more dishes there soon.

ALGHEROLocated on the northwestern coast of the Island of Sardinia, Alghero is a popular tourist resort and a unique example of fusion of the Italian and Catalan cultures. Founded around 1102 by the Genoese Doria family as a fortified port, Alghero was ruled by the Doria for centuries until, in 1353, it was conquered by the Aragonese. The arrival of Catalan colonists in 1372 marked the beginning of its economic development, and the town was deeply transformed with the construction of important buildings, such as the Palazzo d'Albis (sixteenth century).

The Catalan influence in Alghero is evident still today: the street names in the old center appear in Catalan and Italian, and the local cuisine has a distinct Catalan touch. Furthermore, more than 20 percent of the Alghero population speaks a Catalan dialect as a first language, and about 90 percent have some understanding of it.

ANCELOTTI: ITALY CAN LEARN FROM PREMIER

LEAGUEChelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has said that he hopes Italian football can shed violence and racism in favour of a positive image similar to the English Premier League.

"In Italy we still have violence, so I hope that it will change soon," Ancelotti told the club website. "That people go to the stadium to see an exciting match, like in England, and to support their team - not using violence and racist taunts towards the players."

The 50-year-old Italian spent all of his playing and coaching career in Serie A before a switch from AC Milan to Chelsea in June.

Racist abuse is not uncommon in Italy, last season Juventus were ordered to play a league game behind closed doors after some spectators taunted Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli.

"People go to the stadium to see a spectacle (in England). In Italy unfortunately it isn't like that. People there don't have this sense for spectacle," Ancelotti added.

"It is something nice and interesting to see here (in England). I like it because all the stadiums are full and work very well. It's a very positive experience."

ITALY 2:0 BULGARIAItaly took a giant step towards World Cup qualification by beating Bulgaria in Turin.

Fabio Grosso opened the scoring in the 11th minute before his Juventus team-mate Vincenzo Iaquinta doubled the Azzurri's lead shortly before half-time.

The outcome sees the world champions go four points clear at the top of Group Eight and leaves them needing just a point away to second-placed Republic of Ireland in October to go through.

The Italians looked much improved from their fortunate 2-0 triumph over Georgia on Saturday and closer to the sort of form which took them to the world title in 2006.

Having struggled in front of goal in their last four games, boss Marcello Lippi opted to start with Alberto Gilardino alongside Iaquinta up front, relegating Giuseppe Rossi to the bench.

The Azzurri enjoyed a strong start and Claudio Marchisio came close to opening the scoring in the fourth minute but his close-range effort was met by a fine save from Bulgaria goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov.

It was not long before the Italians broke the deadlock, however.

An inspired Grosso, playing in his new home stadium having joined Juve from Lyon last week, exchanged a one-two with Andrea Pirlo before firing a left-footed volley from 12 yards past Ivankov.

The Azzurri should have made it 2-0 shortly after when Iaquinta latched onto Gianluca Zambrotta's cross but pulled his shot wide.

The visitors should have equalised on 26 minutes but Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon produced a stunning save from Stiliyan Petrov's close-range header.

On the half-hour mark, the head of Iaquinta met Pirlo's free-kick but his effort went high over the crossbar.

Shortly after, Iaquinta latched onto Pirlo's cross but his header too was off target. Italy continued to surge forward and their efforts were rewarded five minutes before the break.

Iaquinta played a one-two with Gilardino and then lashed a diagonal shot past Ivankov. Bulgaria responded well and Chavdar Yankov tried his luck from distance but his blast went wide in what was the last chance of the first half.

The visitors almost reduced the deficit after the restart but Stiliyan Petrov's header from Martin Petrov's cross went just high over the bar.

Lippi made his first substitution on the hour mark, with Rossi replacing Gilardino. Rossi twice tested Ivankov with two powerful strikes which the keeper saved. At the other end, Buffon was forced to fully stretch to clear Blagoy Georgiev's fierce free-kick.

Shortly after, Marchisio found no takers for his dangerous low cross towards the far post. With 15 minutes remaining, Dimitar Berbatov got past his marker, surged inside the area and fired inches high over the crossbar.

Georgiev then tried his luck from long range but his shot flew high over the bar and Italy held on for their sixth victory in qualifying. The result leaves Stanimir Stoilov's side third in the pool, eight points behind Italy with two games remaining.

CASTELLO DI VENEREERICE, SICILY

The Castello di Venere, the Castle of Venus, is located in the medieval city of Erice. Orginally known to its founders and the Greeks as Eryx, the city stands atop Mount Erice, around 750 meters above sea level, overlooking the city of Trapani. Erice has a long history as a spirtual center, home to many churches, temples and convents.

Since the ancient times, Erice has been associated with the worship of the goddess of fruitfulness, starting with the Phoenician Astarte, then the Greek Aphrodite, and finally the Roman Venus. Not only does Erice have a delightful medieval ambience and splendid location, it contains many great restaurants that specialize in the local fare of seafood and couscous.

GRAND CANAL AND SANTA MARIA DELLA SALUTE - VENICE

The Grand Canal of Venice is often referred to as the Champs-Elysées of Italy. Lined with rococo palaces and baroque and Gothic churches, as well as everyday markets and shops, the infamous waterway that once ruled the world of commerce remains a vibrant, bustling metropolis to this day.

The canal is 76 yards at its widest and is never less than 40 yards wide, making it plenty big enough to accommodate the ever-increasing number of gondolas, public ferries, water taxis that transport the thousands of tourists who flock to this romantic city each year. The location of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, more commonly referred to as simply the Salute, makes it one of the most photographed churches in Italy.

75 AFRICAN MIGRANTS FEARED DROWNED OFF

ITALYROME, Italy (CNN) -- Up to 75 migrants are missing and feared dead after a harrowing 20-day journey from northern Africa to Europe, a United Nations agency said Friday. Authorities in Italy rescued five Eritrean nationals Thursday in the waters off an Italian island. Survivors said that up to 75 other migrants, mostly fellow Eritreans, died as they tried to reach Europe, said Andrej Mahecic, a spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

"We are shocked by the accounts ... from five Eritreans who are allegedly the only survivors from a boat that set out from Libya 20 days ago," Mahecic said Friday. "The survivors are in very poor health and were taken to Italy for treatment."

Italian authorities Friday were patrolling the waters off Lampedusa, an island in the Mediterranean Sea roughly half way between Sicily and North Africa. About 80 migrants were aboard the boat when it ran out of fuel and got lost about two days into the journey, said Laura Boldrini, also with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

She said she based her information on accounts that a survivor provided to one of her colleagues on Lampedusa. After some people on the boat got sick and died, the others dumped their bodies into the sea for fear of also getting sick, Boldrini said.

Several migrants screamed for help in English when their boat passed other vessels, but only one fishing boat stopped to give the migrants some food and water, Boldrini said, citing the account that a survivor provided to her colleague. Those reports alarmed

the U.N. refugee agency. "This is contrary to the long-standing maritime tradition of rescue at sea" Mahecic said.

Italian police in Rome confirmed that naval officers rescued five Eritreans off the coast of Lampedusa, but they declined to provide additional details. The number of illegal immigrants traveling to Italy and other European destinations has increased in recent years, with many Africans fleeing faltering economies and repressive regimes for the chance of a better future.

Lampedusa has seen arrivals of illegal immigrants double in recent years, from 14,855 in 2005 to 30,657 last year, according to the Italian Interior Ministry. In the first eight months of this year, though, the number of illegal immigrants arriving at Lampedusa declined compared with the past few years, with 7,567 arrivals recorded through August 19, according to Interior Ministry figures.

TUNING IN TO TASTY ITALYBy Rick Steves

(Tribune Media Services) -- Recently when I was in Tuscany, a region fiercely proud of its beef, I sunk my teeth into a carnivore's dream come true. In a stony cellar, under one long, tough vault, I joined a local crowd for dinner. An open fire in the far back of the vault powered the scene. Flickering in front of the flames was a gurney, upon which lay a huge hunk of beef. Like a blacksmith in hell, Giulio -- a lanky man in a T-shirt -- hacked at the beef with a cleaver, lopping off a steak every few minutes. In a kind of mouth-watering tango, he pranced past the boisterous tables of customers, holding a raw slab of beef on butcher's paper like a tray of drinks. Giulio presented the slabs to each table of diners, telling them the weight and price (the minimum was about $40) and getting their OK to cook it.

He'd then dance back to the inferno and cook the slab: seven minutes on one side, seven on the other. There's no asking how you'd like it done; this is the way it is done. And about 15 minutes later, you got your steak. Giulio's place -- Osteria dell'Acquacheta in Montepulciano -- was just one of many Italian dining experiences I had on my trip. Afterward, I came up with some theories about eating out in Italy. While I've never liked putting up with TV noise when grabbing a simple meal in Italy, I now realize that when an eatery has the TV playing, it's often because it's where the local workers drop by to eat ... and that indicates a low price and a good value. Beware of cheap eateries that sport big color photos of pizza and piles of different pastas. They have no kitchens and simply microwave disgusting, prepackaged food. Unless you like lasagna with ice in the center, avoid these.

Some restaurants have self-serve antipasti buffets, offering a variety of cooked appetizers spread out like a salad bar (pay per plate, not weight; usually costs about $11). A plate of antipasti combined with a pasta dish makes a healthy, affordable, interesting meal. An "enoteca" (wine bar) is a popular, fast, and inexpensive option for lunch. Surrounded by the city's office crowd, you can get a fancy salad, plate of meats and cheeses, and a glass of fine wine (check the blackboard for the day's selection and price per glass -- and go for the top end). Some of my favorite Italian eating experiences have been at wine bars.

Italy's no-smoking rules are working, but they've caused some bars to stop serving drinks earlier than before the ban went into effect. Now that bars have to be smoke-free, young drinkers who want a cigarette take their drinks outside. Their noise disturbs the neighbors -- who didn't hear the action back when people stayed (and smoked) inside. In Italy, when neighbors complain, bars

The prime minister serves as the head of government and is the one who runs the country.

comply. Restaurants parked on famous squares generally serve bad food at high prices to tourists. Locals eat better at lower-rent locales. Family-run places operate without hired help and can offer cheaper meals. Good restaurants don't open for dinner before 7 p.m.

While I pride myself in not needing to dress up to enjoy a good restaurant, there is a limit. I was in a restaurant recently where a couple of American travelers made me get my notebook out and jot down, "Even in a modest trattoria, shorts and T-shirts look goofy at dinner."

I've realized I should stay away from restaurants famous for inventing a pasta dish. Alfredo (of fettuccini fame) and Carbonara (of penne fame) are both Roman restaurants -- and they're both much more famous than they are good. One of my favorite Italian specialties isn't even on the menu -- the conversations with other customers. In Rome, I talked about dessert with a man at a nearby table. He told me how his grandfather always said, in the local dialect, "The mouth cannot be finished until it smells of cows." The rustic foodie meant you must finish the meal with cheese.

"La vita e bella" ... life is good in Italy. And the good life seems, like the cuisine, simple. Locals are really into the "marriage" of correct foods. An older wine needs a stronger cheese. Only a tourist would pull the fat off the prosciutto. To me, Italian cuisine is a symphony -- the ingredients are the instruments. The quality is important ... but even good instruments can be out of tune. The marriage of the ingredients is what provides the tonality. When things are in tune, you taste it.

anticostituzionalmente (anticonstitutionally) is described as the longest Italian word in common use.

The colors of the Italian flag represent three virtues: hope (green), faith (white), and charity (red).

SAUSAGE & PEPPERS IN RED WINE SAUCESausage and peppers are an important part of Italian holiday family buffets. From among the lasagna, pasta, and porchetta, everyone always gravitated to this traditional dish. An afternoon of abundansa would not be complete without sausage and peppers eaten with a hearty Italian roll. This is easy to make and it can sit in a crock pot for hours and still taste great.

INGREDIENTS: 4 lbs. Italian sweet & hot sausage combined. Hot Italian turkey sausage is great for this ¼ cup minced garlic 2 tablespoons fresh chopped sweet basil 2 medium onions chopped 8-10 red and green Bell Peppers, seeded and loosely chopped ¼ teaspoon black pepper 2 tablespoons of olive oil ½ cup of semi-sweet red table wine 1 large can of diced tomatoes 1 large can crushed tomatoes

PREPARATION:In a large frying pan, fry sausage on medium high heat until well done. Drain grease when completed. Too much grease will overwhelm the rest of the ingredients. Cut up cooked sausage into 1-2 inch pieces. In a large sauce pan, add the olive oil and cook the onions until they are slightly translucent. Then add the sausage, bell peppers, garlic, basil, fresh ground pepper, wine, diced tomatoes, and crushed tomatoes.

Simmer to start on medium heat, and reduce to low heat after 10 to 15 minutes. Cooking slowly allows the flavors to blend. Taste the flavoring before you finish the recipe. You will develop your own seasoning tastes. The sausage is already aggressively seasoned, so I suggest that you do not add any salt. When the peppers are soft, it is ready to serve.

Transfer the mixture to a crock pot set on low to serve buffet style. Add 1/2 cup of water to keep it hydrated if the mixture becomes too dry. A hearty Italian role is a great complement for this traditional Italian dish. If desired, warm rolls slightly in the oven before serving.
