THEORY: Hardware is the physical part of the computer system that you can see or touch. A peripheral is

any piece of hardware controlled by a computer e.g. a Printer. Every PC is built from anarray of components, each of which serves a specific function in making the overall machinework. You can, however, change the modular configurations that most computers come with

by adding new adapters or card that extend the computer's capabilities. Like software,Hardware is a collective term. Hardware includes not only the computer itself but also theCables, Connectors, Power Supply units, and peripheral devices such as; Keyboard, mouse, audio speakers and Printers.

    DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS:

    CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT :

The Central Processing Unit (CPU)/ Microprocessor is a

computer processor on a microchip. It's sometimes calleda logic chip. It is the "engine" that goes into motion whenyou turn your computer on. A microprocessor is designedto perform arithmetic and logic operations that make useof small number-holding areas called registers. When thecomputer is turned on, the microprocessor is designed toget the first instruction from the Basic Input/OutputSystem (BIOS) that comes with the computer as part of its

memory. After that, either the BIOS, or the operating system that BIOS loads into computer memory, or an application program is "driving" the microprocessor, giving it instructions to

    perform.

    PERIPHERALS:

    Monitor/DisplayKeyboardsMousePrintersProjectorsScannersModems

DISPLAYS: A display is a computer outputsurface and projecting mechanism that showstext and often graphic images to the computer user, using a cathode ray tube (CRT), liquidcrystal display (LCD), light-emitting diode, gas

plasma, or other image projection technology. The display is usually considered to include thescreen or projection surface and the device that

produces the information on the screen.

KEYBOARDS :On most computers, a keyboard is the primary text inputdevice.Types of Key boards:

101-key Enhanced keyboard 104-key Windows keyboard

82-key Apple standard keyboard 108-key Apple Extended keyboard.

Basic types of Keys:Typing keys, Numeric keypad, Function keys and Control keys.

MOUSE: A Mouse is a small device that a computer user pushes across adesk surface in order to point to a place on a display screen and to selectone or more actions to take from that position. Today, the mouse is an

integral part of the Graphical User Interface (GUI) of any personalcomputer The user points at the menu selection by physically moving the

pointing device, which causes a corresponding onscreen movement onthe cursor. One or more buttons atop the device enables the user toindicate that he/she wants to select a menu

    item.

    PRINTER:

Printer is a device that accepts text and graphic output from acomputer and transfers the information to paper, usually to

standard size sheets of paper.. PC printers can be distinguished asimpact or non-impact printers. Early impact printers workedsomething like an automatic typewriter, with a key striking aninked impression on paper for each printed character. The dot-matrix printer was a popular low-cost personal computer printer.

It's an impact printer that strikes the paper a line at a time. The best-known non-impact printers arethe inkjet printer, of which several makes of low-cost color printers are an example, and the laser

printer. The inkjet sprays ink from an ink cartridge at very close range to the paper as it rolls by. Thelaser printer uses a laser beam reflected from a mirror to attract ink (called toner) to selected paper areas as a sheet rolls over a drum. Printers are used to produce letters, invoices, newsletters, transparencies, labels, packing slips and much more.

PROJECTORS: A device that can read text or illustrations printed on paper and translate the information into a form the

computer can use. A projector is a device that integrates a light source, optics system, electronicsand display(s) for the purpose of projecting an image from a computer or video device onto a wall or screen for large image viewing. These devices attached to a computer or video device as you wouldconnect a monitor.

SCANNERS: A scanner is a device that reads graphics andtext into a computer. You can scan graphics such as photographs, drawings and logos into a computer. Mostscanners come with Optical Character Recognition (OCR)software. This software places scanned text into a documentthat can be edited in a word processor. Scanners usuallyattach to your personal computer with a Small Computer System Interface (SCSI). An application such as PhotoShopuses the TWAIN program to read in the image. Some major manufacturers of scanners include: Epson, Hewlett-Packard,Microtek, and Relisys.

MODEMS :Modem stands for Modulator and De-Modulator. A Modem

modulates outgoing digital signals from a computer or other digital device to analog signals for a conventionalcopper twisted pair telephone line and demodulates theincoming analog signal and converts it to a digital signalfor the digital device.

INTERNAL MODEM: The Modem lets computers to connect

with other PCs and information sources such as the Internetthrough the telephone system.. By comparison, using a digitalIntegrated Services Digital Network adapter instead of aconventional modem, the same telephone wire can now carry upto 128 Kbps. With Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) systems, now

being deployed in a number of communities, bandwidth ontwisted-pair can be in the megabit range.

supercomputers in the world. In addition, more than 90% of today's supercomputers run somevariant of Linux.

    EQUIPMENT/TOOLS REQUIRED: Installation CDs

This is a step-by-step installation procedure for Linux, specifically Ubuntu 8.04.You cant install windows after linux and then use linux because Windows doesntdetect Linux.

We should arrange for a CD/DVD of Ubuntu 8.04 or the latest version available. Itis sent for free to home for personal use by Canonical.Search Ubuntu ShipIt inGoogle for more details. Or download the image of Ubuntu 8.04 from net. Againsearch in Google for image links.

Turn on the computer and start the BIOS edit. Usually its DEL,F1,F2 key to startthe BIOS. There change the BOOT device priority and set CD Drive as NO.1. Inmost computers it will be the default setting. Save and quit BIOS, insert the CDand restart. The black screen with a choice for language appears. Select English or use others only if you are very comfortable with that language.

The computer will now boot from the CD/DVD. Now the black screen below willcome. Click on the Install Ubuntu button.

Wait for some time while the Linux Kernel loading box cruises to 100%. Then thereal installation procedures.begin. Its a 7 step process.

STEP 1:- The first step is the language selection. As usual select the Englishoption. The click on the forward button to proceed.

STEP 2:- In this step you see a world map with a lots of dot and a question Whereare you. They are asking for the time zone of your location. You just got to click on the the red dot near your place or on the drop down menu select it. For Indians

the only option is Kolkatta GMT+5:30. Proceed FORWARD.

STEP 3:- The third step is the keyboard layout. Just click on your keyboard layout. In India we use the USA layout. If yours is different, you just got to select it and

type on the box given below and see whether the same key as you press isappearing on the screen. Its another of the silly steps. Again FORWARD.

STEP 4:- When you press forward they scan the disk and the partition table comes. This table has the Device partitions, its type, mount point, format option and sizeused. Linuxs file system is ext3 and windows use fat32 and NTFS. Linux detectsall these file systems. But windows doesnt detect ext3. So for dual use its alwaysgood to use ext3 for only one partition in which Linux is installed and to use fat32for all other partitions. Leave the partition where Windows is installed as such if

you wish to facilitate dual boot. You can remove the rest of partitions and createnew partitions. Create one partition in ext3 format and set the mount point as /

backslash. Its better to give around 5 GB for this partition. A swap area is alsoneeded. The size of this should be around double of the size of your RAM. For most computers 1GB swap area would be sufficient. Create that partition, set its

type as Swap area. This should be enough. Now press the FORWARD.

STEP 5:- This is again another of the simple step. Who are you. Give here your name, the login name and password for your account in the computer and a

computer name, which is the name of your computer as seen by other computers in

your network. Now click on Forward.

STEP 6:- They ask whether you want to migrate your user settings like user accounts from your existing OS which would be Windows in most cases.

STEP 7:- Ready to Install. You see all the selections you have made in the firstsix method and see an install button. You can verify them, change them if needed

This should be it. Now they start the installation procedures. They set up the

partitions, format it. Copies the necessary OS files into the / directory or rootdirectory. It should take some time, around 15-30 min in the computer.
