INFORMATION TECHNOLOGYDefinition: It is the development, implementation,

and maintenance of computer hardware and software systems to organize and communicate information electronically.

OR The branch of engineering that deals

with the use of computers and telecommunications to retrieve and store and transmit information.

REASONS FOR USING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Computers are extremely fast, accurate,

reliable and efficient, and can work continuously for several days, weeks or months without needing a break. The computer is the main information technology tool used by individuals and organization to assist them in doing various tasks. Therefore, any valid reason that could be given for using a computer will be a reason for using Information Technology.

SCOPE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Learning – discovering knowledge Training – when playing a computer game,

you are simulating the movements of real players. Pilots use flight simulation for training in emergency procedures. Medical students use simulation software to learn surgical procedures. Medical students use simulation software to learn surgical procedures. There is far less risk and harm to human lives, and less cost when simulation is used in training.

Entertainment – playing games and listening to music

Employment – There are many career opportunities that have arisen from the use of information technology. For example, a systems administrator is responsible for the computer network at a school laboratory or in a organization. Jobs can be found within and outside the information technology industry
