2011salary guide
last year as a whole was a welcome change
from 2008/2009. recruitment in technology
was targeted and aggressive from the very
beginning of the year, and the levels of hiring
and competition were unlike any seen for
over ten years. most of our clients understood
the “war for talent” was going to be tight and
so invested time and resources in securing
high calibre permanent staff in the first half
of 2010. in many areas headcount growth
was easier to secure and where projects
and budgets had been frozen or dramatically
reduced in the prior two years, these
restrictions had largely been lifted.
last year was a year of two halves regarding
permanent recruitment, as so much had
been completed in h1. budgets had largely
been expended which led to a slow down in
the initial months of the second half of the
year (earlier than the usual seasonal shifts in
recruitment activity), the knock-on effect of
this was a greater focus on hiring contractors.
in broad terms, the demand for strong
application development staff was typically
high, particularly within fX, equities
(including derivatives) and risk (significant in
counterparty exposure management). some
institutions hired heavily in development staff
to build greater cross asset class systems
and by the mid point of the year clients were
beginning to consider talented individuals from
outside of the industry.
to summarise, 2011 will be a promising
year for employees and employers alike, as
organisations continue to invest in new and
emerging technology, opportunities will be on
offer which will help attract talented people.
our recommendation to all clients is to run an
efficient recruitment process with all people
involved able to articulate the opportunities on
offer effectively. candidates who are actively
looking will be plentiful in the early stages of
the year, but with this will be an abundance of
options for them. organisations which impress
candidates in all areas of the interview process
stand the greatest chance of hiring the people
they want - this includes ensuring the basic
elements of the assessments are done well.

summary of 2010 and looking ahead to 2011
Within infrastructure and support we saw
elevated levels of recruitment around cloud
computing and grid initiatives. outside of
this there was significant competition within
front office application support, dma and
professionals with core competencies around
minimising latency (outside of core decision-
making systems).
project work increased dramatically which
resulted in increased demand for business
analysts and project managers. the split
between permanent hires and contractors was
quite even.
retention of existing staff is vital as always,
and in 2010 we saw more pressure on salaries
and contractor rates with some institutions
showing significant increases in salaries for
existing populations and new hires. We expect
to see this lessen in 2011 with cost control
being a key theme for it management. We
feel the start of 2011 will be similar to 2010 –
aggressive hiring in the first six months of the
year. institutions will show a real commitment
to securing permanent staff early in the year to
avoid the issue of bonus buy-outs in the latter
months when individuals have accrued six
months or more of bonus. contractor numbers
rose significantly in 2009 and 2010 and some
populations are now an uncomfortable split
in favour of the contractor headcount. We
anticipate there being more determination
from senior management to achieve higher
permanent staff levels adding to demand for
talented employees.
