“It’s My Body and I’ll Live Like I Want To!”

“This is my Body, and I will do with it what I please!” We have all heard those words before. We may even have uttered them ourselves. As God’s children, we claim to understand ownership differently. We claim to belong to the God who made us, the God who redeemed us from sin. I often have the impression, however, that when it comes to my life, I only partially adhere to that principle. In reality, I tend to show that I still feel this is my body! I get the impression that the way I live my life is saying “Granted, God doesn’t want me to abuse this body with drugs, alcohol, sex, food, or anything else, but it is still my body, and it is still my choice!” As good as that attitude may sound, somehow we miss the point of what it

really means to belong to God.

When we became Christians, Paul says we were “bought with a price” (1 Cor. 6:9). Peter adds that we were “redeemed from the empty way of life…” (1 Pet. 1:18). Having been purchased by God, redeemed at the cost of Christ’s blood, we give up our right to say “This is my body and I’ll

live like I want to.”

Accepting and acknowledging this fact frees us to offer ourselves to God daily as willing, joyful, cooperative living offerings…living “sacrifices” (Rom. 12:1). We are free to give ourselves to God for His use, as He

sees fit, and to His glory! Does our life line up with the words of this song?

I'm yours Lord: everything I've got, everything I am, everything I'm not.

I'm yours Lord: try me now and see, see if I can be completely yours.

Good Morning, The recent sermon on giants had me thinking about one of my favorite old testaments characters. Caleb was one of the 12 men sent to spy out the Promise Land before Moses and the Israelites were supposed to take possession of it. As the spies were giving their report about fortified cities, large armies and even descendants of Anak (giants), we read that Caleb quieted the people down and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome.” The other spies, beside Joshua and Caleb, began to assert that the land and people were too big for them to conquer. The people wept and complained that they were brought out of Egypt only to die in the desert. Joshua and Caleb spoke to them saying, “The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which flows with milk and honey.’ Only do not rebel against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not fear them.” And for this

the people wanted to have them stoned.

It’s so easy to lose heart when we face difficulties, hardships, or feel we are outnumbered. Joshua and Caleb faced fortified cities, large armies, their own people turning on them, and even giants – but they did not lose heart. Caleb went on to see that generation pass away in the wilderness. He saw those fortified cities and great armies fall as God’s people took possession of

land.

After the major armies and cities were destroyed, Joshua went to allocate land to the tribes. Caleb went to Joshua to remind him of that land they spied out, the one with the giants and he asked for that land. He said that the Lord kept him strong and he was still willing to battle. And can’t help but think before Caleb left, he might have leaned over to Joshua and said, “These people are our bread.” Let us have the heart and desire of Caleb. May we get to see the walls, cities, and armies fall

before the Lord – and let no giant intimidate us.

In Him,

Luke
