    Evolution of Indian IT sectorEvolution of Indian IT sectory Tatas were the pioneers TCS in 1968.

    y National Informatics Centre was established in 1975 and

    CMC was started in 1976.

    y IBM quit India in 1977 in protest against Foreign Exchange

    Regulation Act.y First two multinationals to enter the industry are Citibank

    Overseas Software Limited(COSL) in 1984 and TI in 1985.

    y Liberalization of Indian economy in 1991 - new era of

    globalization and international economic integration.

    y Y2K problem India was looked as destination given low cost

    operations and talent pool.

    y Evolved from testing and maintenance to full service players

    providing testing services, infrastructure services, consulting

    y India's software and services exports were $17.2 billion in the fiscal

    year 2009-2010. ITs share of Indian Exports increased from 4%

    (1998) to 26%(2010)

    y As a proportion of national GDP, IT-BPO sector revenues increased

    from 1.2%(1998) to an estimated 6.1%(2010)

    y Indian IT-BPO grew by 12 per cent in FY 2009 to reach US$ 71.7billion in aggregate revenues
