3. Who We Are (Values)
Film Independent is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping independent filmmakers get their films made, building the audience for independent film, and increasing diversity in the film industry. Though we are based out of Los Angeles, our community is 4,000 members strong with an international reach.
4. What We Do (Focus)
Making a movie is hard. Film Independent can help. We have cameras and casting rooms to rent, an incredible resource library with computers, sample budget and business plans and every conceivable film periodical. We offer our members over 120 free screenings and 150 educational events every year.
5. Spirit Awards (Program)
Now in its twenty-fifth year, Film Independent's Spirit Awards is a celebration honoring films made by filmmakers who embody independence and who dare to challenge the status quo. Televised in millions of homes and covered internationally by the press, Film Independent's Spirit Awards has become the vanguard event of the independent film community, recognizing the achievements of independent filmmakers and promoting independent film to a wider audience.
6. Spirit Awards (contd)
As the first event to honor independent film exclusively, Film Independent's Spirit Awards has made a name for itself as the premier awards event for the independent film community. It's a celebration of the spirited pioneers who bring a unique vision to filmmaking.Along with being a great party, the Spirit Awards ceremony also brings together the top talent from independent film and Hollywood. Trophies are presented for the years' best achievements in independent film, with statues awarded for Best Feature, Best First Feature, Best Feature Made for Under $500,000 (the John Cassavetes Award), and many more.Keeping with its roots and L.A. location, the Spirit Awards takes place each year inside a beachfront tent in Santa Monica. Currently in its 25th year, the show is as original as the films and filmmakers it honors.
7. Inputs
The salient input needed for the Spirit Awards is money to fund the event.
Also dissipated throughout the ceremony are volunteers who help with various aspects of the aforementioned event.
8. Process
The money donated to the event (by sponsors or otherwise) is used for the following:
To rent the facility for the event.
Pay workers to prepare the event.
Purchase custom made award trophies
Hire a (celebrity) host.
Broadcast the ceremony through IFC (Independent Film Channel)
And so on
9. Outputs
The output of funding and volunteers will be the ceremony itself.
10. Outcomes
The Independent Spirit Awards help to raise awareness about the Independent Film Industry.
It brings more attention to Independent Film Makers and allows for their work to be more widely known and appreciated.
It also encourages other young independent filmmakers to work on their own films and aspire to be apart of such an event.
11. Critical Thinking
The process of making a film requires a lot of Critical Thinking, which include:
Thinking ahead/planning/problem solving. This is necessary when actually filming.Filmmakers need to plan locations, times, and be prepared in case, for some reason, a location can no longer be used. They must always have a Plan B.
Contemplating problems and making decisions. They must be prepared for as much problems as possible, and have prepared solutions. This can have to do with allotted time available to film in a certain location or during a certain part of the day.As one of my film class teacher says How ever long you think it is going to take, double it.Time alone, is a substantive matter when it comes to filming.
12. Critical Reading
Critical Reading is used more in the initial stages of making a film, which includes the production of a screenplay:
Connecting details to main ideas. This can be very important to the story.Especially, in the writing stage where there are no visuals. The writer must point out certain details, which might be necessary to the plot of the film.
To understand the authors purpose in writing. This applies more to whoever is reading the screenplay, be it an actor, potential director, etc. Some films have a deeper meaning to them then they initially let on.It is left to the reader to make an inference as to what the film is actually about. Not all films are like this.Only a select few reward those who are able to see past the metaphors and allegories to find the hidden treasure that is the real purpose of the film.
13. Critical Action
Along with Critical Reading and Thinking, filmmaking can use Critical Action as well:
To make decisions (by using Critical Thinking). This falls mostly under the directors job.He or she is the one in charge of the actual production of a film and he is the one responsible for getting it done, on time and within a budget. In order to do so, it is inevitable that the director will come across several difficult decisions along the way.If he us unable to make such decisions than he is unsuited for the job.
To ask a lot of tough questions. This applies more to documentary filmmaking (which on its own users several aspects of Critical Thinking, Reading and Action). The basis of documentaries are either to find answers to questions or to give knowledge. Both these involve interviewing people involved with whatever the subject of the documentary is.A popular topic in documentaries has to do with the current state of the economy. In such documentaries the filmmakers interview several politicians, people who work on Wall Street, economic or financial experts, ext., and ask them probing questions in an attempt to find out what really happened, and possible solutions.
