Call me Llama. Some years ago never mind how long precisely having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. And that was how I found myself on this ship, a ship full of friends, best friends one and all, a veritable friendship it was. It was on the S.S. Friendship that I met Gargueg, a strong man of few words and dubious origins, the other person bringing you this word games and a good friend. (Just for the record, he does carry around a bronze idol that he worships in mysterious ways)

This, then, is the tale of two men gazing up at a big complex state of affairs funneled down and glimpsed through the filter of their tiny little world of blog posts, JAM sessions and word games. You are what you love, not what loves you. Etymology & Trivia (7.5 points per question)

1. X (319272 BC) was one of the greatest Greek generals of the Hellenistic era. His greatest political weaknesses were the failure to maintain focus and the failure to maintain a strong treasury at home. His name is famous for the phrase Y which refers to an exchange at the Battle of Asculum. The battle, though successful, cost him heavy losses, from which the term Y was coined. In response to congratulations for winning a costly victory over the Romans, he is reported to have said: "One more such victory will undo me!”.

2. John Scotus ( c. 1266 – 8 November 1308), is generally considered to be one of the

three most important philosophertheologians of the High Middle Ages. He was known as "Doctor Subtilis" because of the subtle distinctions and nuances of his thinking. Later philosophers in the sixteenth century were less complimentary about his work, and accused him of sophistry. This led to the word "X", which developed from the name given to his followers in the 1500s, becoming used for "somebody who is incapable of scholarship"

3. This familiar word comes from an alteration of the Middle English for odour or taste,

and is derived in turn from a Middle French term meaning something left behind, or released. What noun, more familiar to us as verb?

4. The association with this word so embarrassed X’s family that they petitioned the

government to rename it; when the government refused, they instead changed their own family name. By coincidence, a person named X was indeed executed – he was a doctor of Lyons. This coincidence may have contributed to erroneous statements that X was put to death on the machine that bears his name; however, in reality, X died in 1814 of natural causes.

5. On December 8, 1869 Leopold and Fanny (both writers) signed a contract making

Leopold the slave of Fanny for the period of six months. The stipulation on the contract stated that the Baroness (as Fanny called herself) wear furs as often as possible, especially when she was in a bad mood. Leopold would be disguised as a servant and travel in the 3rd class while Fanny would travel in the 1st class. The real life contract served as the base for a novel in which the character represented by Fanny acquired a lover to arouse jealousy in the character represented by Leopold. Why is this story in this round?

6. It originally meant "provider of shelter, innkeeper" and later "one sent ahead to arrange

lodgings" (for a monarch, an army, etc.) It is this usage which has led to today’s sense of the word – an omen, or a forerunner.

7. In 1978, a documentary on the NY Times was made, titled “Farewell, Etaoin Shrdlu”,

said by many to mark the end of an era. Thomas Pynchon named a character "Etienne

Cherdlu" in his early short story The Secret Integration, based on Etaoin Shrdlu. Who is this enigmatic character? Funda will do.

8. Æthelthryth was an East Anglian princess, a Fenland and Northumbrian queen and

Abbess of Ely. The common version of Æthelthryth's name was St. Audrey, which is the origin of the word X, which derived from the fact that her admirers bought modestly concealing lace goods at an annual fair held in her name in Ely. By the 17th century, this lacework had become seen as oldfashioned, or cheap and of poor quality, at a time when the Puritans of eastern England looked down on any form of lacy dressiness.

9. The first element of this word comes from gend meaning ball in

Hindi/Hindustani/Khariboli. The second element, is IndoAryan for place or compartment or Persian term for dwelling, house. Which word, familiar to all of you, am I talking about?

in feudal Europe by which fires had to be covered up or put out at a certain fixed time in the evening, marked by the ringing of an evening bell. Some of the topics discussed were clandestine in nature and when people spoke about them, for fear of being punished, they would speak indirectly. Thus, the persons discussing clandestine matters were said to be speaking of "other things" in the marketplace. Can you even remember why you came here? Stick Links (5 points per question, 10 points for the last one) StickLinks are puzzles that combine quotes with word searches. A quote is placed in a grid and the solver must connect the letters of the quote with a continuous line. For example, to find the hidden phrase in the puzzle below, start with the circled letter. Next, draw a line from each correct letter to the next as you reveal the phrase. The blanks at the bottom will also help. When the puzzle is done, each letter will have been used only once, and the letters will be connected with a straight line. Example:
