With the “Keep Me Posted” alerting feature, SciFinder sends you automatic updates on areas you—and your competitors—are interested in. You can monitor specific research topics, companies, authors, substances, or sequences, and choose how frequently you receive notifications: daily, monthly, or weekly. The service isn’t just convenient, it’s incredibly current. Journal article records often appear in SciFinder before they’re even in print. New references, substances, and sequences are added daily. Patents from all the major offices are added within two days of issuance. As with all SciFinder features, Keep Me Posted is integrated with your workflow. At any point in a search (including the beginning), simply click on the Keep Me Posted button. SciFinder tracks your steps and will generate the appropriate alert—even for complex topics. When you receive a notification, you can follow each reference as you would in a search: find citing or cited articles (with links to the electronic full text), and follow referenced substances and reactions for further information. Comprehensive, intuitive, seamless—SciFinder doesn’t just alert you, it’s part of the process. To find out more, call us at 800-753-4227 (North America) or 614-447-3700 (worldwide) or visit www.cas.org. Our Planet and Its Life:

Origins and Futures

The theme calls to mind that 2009 is the

200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth

and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his

book On the Origin of Species by Means

of Natural Selection.

New understanding of the underlying

processes and mechanisms that fascinated

Darwin continues to be the focus of

intense research 150 years later.

Amplification of a synthetic microRNA was performed using the miRCURY

LNA™ microRNA PCR system. Hsa-miR-100 (2 × 108 copies) input was used

to generate cDNA. A ten-fold serial dilution ranging from 2 × 109 copies to

2 copies cDNA was amplified by real-time PCR. A. The amplification curves

and B. the standard curve show excellent linear correlation between the

decreasing cycle numbers and the logarithm of the microRNA copy number,

proving the assay enables sensitive microRNA detection down to less than

10 copies with a wide dynamic range of at least 8 logs.

Start your microRNAdiscovery froma single cell

MicroRNAs are small wonders. To study them, life science

researchers need extremely accurate and sensitive tools

for detection and quantitation.

With the new miRCURY LNA™ microRNA PCR system,

your discovery starts from 10 pg total RNA – you only need

a single cell. You can even detect high and low expressed

microRNAs from the same sample in your experiment, as

the dynamic range is 8 logs wide.

Our PCR system combines microRNA-specific primers

and SYBR® Green detection and is part of Exiqon’s popular

miRCURY LNA™ product line, the most complete range of

tools for microRNA analysis available today.

The miRCURY LNA™ tools enable you to seek, find and

verify microRNAs. Accelerate your discoveries.

SBIR-STTR Phase 1 + Phase 2 awards

Kentucky will match both Phase 1 and Phase 2

federal SBIR and STTR awards to our high-tech small

businesses – no other state has a program designed to

do just that.

If you are looking for a place to locate or start a

high-tech company, Kentucky’s SBIR-STTR Matching

Funds program is just one of many reasons to give our

state a look.

We are now accepting applications from companies

in Kentucky (or willing to relocate to Kentucky) for

state funds to match federal Small Business Innovation

Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology

Transfer (STTR) grants. Phase 1 awards are matched up

to $100,000 and Phase 2 awards up to $500,000 per

year for two years.

Kentucky offers a wide range of support for high-

tech small businesses, including grants, tax incentives,

and other forms of early-stage funding. Our statewide

network of Innovation and Commercialization Centers

can offer business management and entrepreneurial

training, while helping find financing.

The Cabinet for Economic Development can make

growing a business in Kentucky fast and easy. Our low

cost of living, low-stress commutes, and high quality

of life amid unrivaled natural beauty are why Kentucky

communities are rated among the best places to start a

business and raise a family.

Genomics of Energy & Environment is the topic the 2008 Department of Energy Joint

Genome Institute (DOE JGI) User Meeting, which will be held March 26-28 in Walnut Creek, California. This year's meeting

will specifically emphasize the genomics of renewable energy strategies, biomass conversion to biofuels, environ-

mental gene discovery, and engineering of fuel-producing organisms. A series of presentations by leading scien-

tists advancing these topics will feature a keynote address by Nobel Laureate Steven Chu, Director of Lawrence

Berkeley National Laboratory. The meeting will also include informatics workshops and tutorials for the analysis of

prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes, and the evaluation of new sequencing platforms and their applications. Poster

submissions are encouraged. Pre-registration is required as interest is expected to exceed meeting capacity again this

year. Registration and a preliminary agenda can be found at: www.jgi.doe.gov.

Multi-Application Imaging and AnalysisThe G:BOX Chemi XT16 automated chemiluminescence andfluorescence imagingandanalysis system featuresmany innovations.Inside a newly designed light-tight darkroom, the latest 16-bitcamera with a new f 0.95 variable aperture lens makes it possibleto quickly produce accurate images of large gels and blots. TheG:BOX Chemi XT16 offers computer control of its motor-driven stage, which allows the system to memorize set positions for specificapplications. The camera, with sensitive effective 6.3-megapixelresolution, is ultracooled to guarantee the instrument can separateclose band and spot images with virtually no background noise, even when imaging chemiluminescence blots for long exposuretimes. In addition, the darkroom comes with a state-of-the-artoverhead white epi-lighting module, an ultraviolet to visible lightNovaGlo converter screen, and a 20-cm-by-20-cm ultraviolettransilluminator to allow rapid and accurate imaging of common DNAand protein stains such as ethidium bromide, SYBR Green, SYBRSafe, Coomassie blue, Deep Purple, Pro-Q Diamond, silver stain, andSYPRO Ruby. For additional applications, it can be fitted with otherlighting options, precision filters, and a blue light converter screen.

Tissue Section ScanningThe Acumen eX3 is well suited to scanning tissue sections mountedon microscope slides due to its large field of view (400 mm2),which enables the rapid collection of multicolored fluorescencedata from whole sections of tissue without the need to stitchtogether multiple images. The Acumen eX3 provides several modesof use. Cytometry mode rapidly scans, analyzes, and reportshigh-content information yielding very small postscan file sizes(>50kb). For more detailed evaluations, TIFF files can be exportedand analyzed in batch mode using third-party image processingsoftware. The sensor head holds easily exchangeable,application-specific cartridges for techniques including capillaryelectrophoresis, nanoliquid chromatography, and imaging of lab-on-a-chip devices. The miniature detector head contains a high-resolution1,280-by-1,024 active pixel sensor. The detector can be used asa plug-and-play accessory linked to multiple peripheral devices, such as capillary electrophoresis or nanoliquid chromatographyinstrumentation, with or without a mass spectrometer. Detection isperformed at a selected wavelength by means of interchangeablefilters. Processed data, including absorbance values covering thewhole imaged area, is output in real-time to a computer using a high-speed serial data link.ParaytecFor information +44 1904 526270
