WINELANDS FLY FISHING The two Eikendal dams have been stocked with rainbow trout and the team is eager for you to cast a line and try your hand at this fast- growing and exciting sport. Here they are hand - reared and raised to be ambassadors for the species. Today there are only 7500 cheetahs left and South Africa is home to less than 1000 of these majestic cats. Cheetah Outreach continue to be involved in environmental education and look forward to any financial assistance to this worthy cause. Turkish Anatolian Shepherd dogs are also bred at Eikendal and used by selected farms to guard livestock in an effort to reduce conflict between farmers and predators. Eikendal winemaker Nico Grobler says the 2014 harvest has been a challenging harvest in general with unpredictable weather patterns and plenty of head scratching. However, the attention to detail in the vineyard, coupled with innovative and progressive vineyard and canopy management, has resulted in excellent quality and a slightly larger vintage than 2013. A good year overall for Eikendal wines, with the vineyards looking promising for the future. Great news for Eikendal wine lovers! VINEYARDS & CELLAR IT’S PRUNING TIME ! While the vines are still in sleeping mode, it's time to prune. Pruning focuses the growth of the vine where you want it, and determines how much fruit a vine will have. Each vineyard is different, with the variety of grape, location, fertility of the soil and climate all playing a role in the decision on how to best prune. We do the Guyot system (the cane buds grow into shoots that produce the yield in the following season) on one Chardonnay block and spur pruning in the rest ( spur pruning involves looking at the new, one-year-old wood growing from the spurs of a cordon. You want one to three buds on each spur). The main activity at the cellar at the moment is the final blending and filtering of the Sauvignon Blanc and Janina 2014.
