TRAVELING TO CHINA FOR STUDENTS
ISU International
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Food Lodging General Safety Social Etiquette Additional Advice
FOOD SAFETY Look for restaurants with clearly marked prices and
menus. Make reservations. Keep your receipts.
FOOD SAFETY Try to eat organics, or Green Food label. Wash fruits and veggies off first. Only buy seafood from reputable businesses. Stick to well known restaurants and markets. The food is
better quality and is safer to eat. Avoid milk if possible. Try soy. Drink only bottled water. Bring medicine for diarrhea. If you drink alcohol, choose beer.
HOTEL SAFETY Choose a 4+ star hotel,
they are safer. 4 stars in China = 2 stars in
the U.S.A. Make sure that the doors
and windows in your hotel room can be securely closed.
Do not let strangers in your room.
GENERAL SAFETY Travel in groups. Tell people where you are
going. 110 is the number for
police. Be sure you have real
money. Carry an address book with
contacts and addresses in English and Chinese.
HOW TO STAY SAFE Shop lightly. Driving in China is more hazardous than in the U.S.A. Be cautious when crossing the street. Learn the traffic laws. Avoid strangers if possible. Keep track of your belongings. Learn how to spot fakes. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
SOCIAL ETIQUETTE Dress modestly. Learn how to bargain in
Chinese. Gambling and drugs are
illegal in China. Avoid trying to
communicate with “known” hand gestures.
ADDITIONAL ADVICE Get the Pleco app Power outlets are different than in the United States. Carry a map. Create gaps in the itinerary.
