rhythm and boozeBrews, News, Bands & Reviews - Issue 24 - March/April 2014
a Peterborough pub that
had seen better days has
reopened, improved in so
many ways. Formerly
the office – and before
that, Johnny byrne’s
– the pub on oundle
road, Woodston has
reverted an earlier name,
the new inn.
run by Liam Scanlon,
who is also responsible
for the ostrich inn, the
pub has been refreshed
inside and out.
everything from the
windows to furnishings
has been replaced, along
with the beer lines and
bar fonts.
on top of the keg
offerings such as Fosters,
Strongbow and guinness,
there are now three hand
pumps serving cask ales,
which could expand to
match demand. the
games room has been retained
and Liam is looking to form
pool and darts teams, along
with a football team.
For those who prefer to watch
sports, the pub subscribes to
Sky Sports and will be
showing all the major games.
Free Wi-Fi is available and,
like the ostrich, the new inn
will be running a full diary of
live music events.

apparently an ancient
tradition, cheese rolling was
‘revived’ in Stilton in the
mid-20th century. originally
the races were run on easter
Monday but lately they have
been held on the May day
bank holiday – so this year
it’s on 5 May.
the course starts between
the bell inn and the angel
opposite and ends at the cross
roads between Fen Street and
church Street. teams of four
have to roll a cheese – in
reality a chopped up telegraph
pole – along the road and the
first one to the finishing line
is the winner.
all members of the team
must roll the cheese at least
once. this is a knockout
competition with the winners
of rounds going through until
a final is reached.
Fancy dress is optional and
the prizes are a whole Stilton
cheese plus beer for the men’s
teamand wine for the ladies’.
but more than that it has the
air of a village fête with stalls
and entertainment and loads
of money is raised for charity.
So why not get a team
together from your local pub
and enter (via the Stilton
community association on
01733 241206)?
While you are in Stilton try
some of the bell’s own
cheese, which is doing its best
to reclaim the right to make
the dairy product in the
village that it is named for.

if a combination of cheap rail travel, live
music and real ale fresh from the brewery is
for you then the Poacher Line Music trains
are a must. the train is a standard east
Midlands trains service which calls at
Sleaford, heckington and boston on its way to
Skegness – the only difference is live music
and bottled batemans’ beer on board. upon
reaching Wainfleet, revellers are invited to
make the short walk to batemans’ brewery
for further live entertainment and a chance to
sample the range of draught beers and hot food
in the delightful ‘Windmill’ bar.
We enjoyed the September trip so much, we
opted to take the november train too, and
were nicely entertained by skiffle trio, Jet.
there’s usually just under a couple of hours
before the return train, but on this occasion an
announcement was made that the return train
(the last of the day) had been cancelled.
Strangely there was not one audible complaint
at the prospect of being left stranded at this
Lincolnshire outpost.
credit goes to the ‘Poacher Line’ team who
hurriedly arranged a couple of double deckers
from nearby Skeggy to return the increasingly
jolly travellers home, although a few would
have liked to be stuck there a bit longer.
the Music train is organised by the Poacher
line community rail Partnership and usually
runs on the third thursday of the month –
check the website www.poacherline.org.uk for
future dates.
the train departs from Sleaford at 18.55,
arriving back at 22.00. Fare from Sleaford is
£10.60 return, which reduces to just £5.30 each
if you can make up a group of four people.Chris Shilling

For doctor Who fans brought
up on the space bound and
historical adventures of
William hartnell and Patrick
troughton, Jon Pertwee’s
debut – 1970’s Spearhead
From Space – must’ve looked
like an entirely different
show. now in colour and
set on earth in the near
future, the doctor’s post-
regeneration confinement to
hospital meant that much of
the story concentrated on
brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
(nicholas courtney) and the
unit organisation.
in an early scene,
Lethbridge-Stewart’s soon
to be co-opted scientific
advisor elizabeth Shaw
(caroline John) is seen being
driven through the streets of
camden to unit’s secret base
underneath St Pancras railway
station. as the staff car turns
from the euston road into
Midland road, the red bass
logo – attached to the euston
tavern – can clearly be seen
in the background.
With the pub now part of
the o’neill’s chain, not to
mention my aversion to keg
stout and ‘the craic’, i’ve had
no call to visit here until now.
unusually for the chain, it has
four hand pumps, which on
this occasion were serving
Fuller’s London Pride,
Sharp’s doom bar, thwaites
nutty black and the great
Yorkshire brewery’s top of
the hops.
containing 2,014 different
varieties of uK hops, top
of the hops seemed an
intriguing prospect. it’s a
decent pint and at £4 was
relatively cheap for
somewhere so close to
three main line stations.
Fifth doctor, Peter davison,
once said, “that’s the
problem with regeneration,
you never quite know what
you’re going to get.” the
same could be said of
branches of o’neill’s and
in the case of this one, in a
good way.

Mister posh’s Musical past
Known by many for his role
as Mr Posh – Peterborough
united’s monocled mascot –
Mick Jones spent the best
part of 50 years as a singer.
Performing solo until his
musical retirement two years
ago, Mick was previously in
local group the big Four.
in the 1960s his Frankie
valli-inspired harmonies
even earned him an
audition with the hollies
who were looking to replace
graham nash.
although his desire to be
a show singer remains
unfulfilled, Mick is grateful
for the opportunities that
music has offered him. he
first met his wife at a
big Four gig and in the
late-1960s/early-1970s,
when the band was booked
up three years in advance,
supported major acts of the
time including the Searchers,
billy Fury and them.

a banner hanging on the

caMra pub of the Year’ but
this is just one of the awards
that have been heaped upon
this gem of a pub in recent
years. Since Kim and Jackie
beresford took over the
place in 2005, the accolades
have come thick and fast
including national cider
Pub of the Year.
it’s easy to list the
attractions such as the ten
real ales from the likes of
abbeydale, Whim, navigation
and even oakham ales,
around eight ciders,
continental lagers, fruit wines,
live entertainment (including
poetry evenings) and an
extensive menu of delicious
home cooked food.
the real magic though is in
the ambience – three open
fires in winter create a
warming glow whichever
entrance you use to this
sizeable traditional building,
while subdued lighting allows
the diner/drinker to indulge
themselves in comfort of the
three separate areas.
the staff are young but
surprisingly well versed in the
beer on offer and, crucially,
seem to have a real sense of
respect for their work so the
welcome is always cordial.
if that’s not enough the pub
also boasts its own brewery –
ashover ales – with at least
three home brewed beers
available, and more recently,
award winning ciders. beer
festivals are held in March
and october when up to 50
beers and ciders are available.
the village itself is
particularly pretty with lots of
good walking locally. the pub
is dog friendly and also offers
comfortable accommodation,
so it’s ideal for a weekend
break. there’s even a holiday
cottage attached which sleeps
up to eight people for around
£100 per night.
the old Poets corner is
less than two hours drive
from Peterborough in the
centre of ashover, just off
the a632 between
chesterfield and Matlock.
it’s open from 12 noon until
11pm daily, and food is
available every lunchtime
and evening.

nearly 200 new breweries
opened in britain during
2012. among them was
Market deeping’s Star
brewing company, which
is run by Simon raines
– formerly head brewer at
ufford ales – and business
partner tom Marriott.
originally brewing at the
golden triangle brewery in
norwich, Star took delivery
of its ten-barrel brew kit at
the end of last year. the new
kit was being put through its
paces when rhythm & booze
visited in late-January with
new brew, astral, fermenting
away nicely.
“the reason we are brewing
an all-new beer on the kit,”
explains Simon, “is to
calibrate the equipment.”
“it’s been a major
undertaking,” adds tom, “we
needed to make sure we had
adequate water and power
supplies, not to mention
drainage. We need to drain
around 5,000 litres of water
each day.”
the water quality was
never in any doubt, as the
long-established hopshackle
brewery is only two-doors
away. Simon is keen to stress
that there’s nothing more than
a friendly rivalry between the
two firms, “it was nigel

Martin Bacon was a truly inspirational teacher and leader, passionate about education and about getting the very best out of every student. He was a great friend and a fireball of boundless energy and enthusiasm. He was also a real ale fan who had many of his most innovative ideas after a couple of pints of the good stuff. So, what better way to pay tribute than with a pint of fabulous local beer? This brew – Martin Bacon Ale (MBA) is made especially for you, Martin. It has been designed by some of your closest friends. So, we raise our glasses to you and to your tremendous legacy. Cheers, mate.

Location does have a small
part to play though, as the
brewery provides easy road
access to the partners’ homes
and its outlets. by doing all
the deliveries themselves,
the partners are able to
develop relationships with
their customers. and with
tom having lived in
norfolk, beers from the Star
brewing company can be
found in a variety of north
norfolk pubs, outside of
its usual 50-mile
distribution radius.
Future plans include
producing a craft beer and
installing a second
fermentation vessel and a
conditioning tank but in the
meantime the brewery has
begun production of bottle-
conditioned ales. the first
batch is called Martin bacon

from each bottle of the beer
– commissioned by the

a local cancer charity.
although Star is a new
project with new beers, it
does produce some similar
styles to the former ufford
range. and Simon is ready
to admit that those who
enjoyed White hart and
black hart will find familiar
ground with comet and dark
Matter, respectively.
as if you haven’t guessed,
all of the brewery’s beers,
whether from its core range
or seasonal offerings, have
astronomical names. but i
wondered how the Star
brewing company’s name
came about? Simon told me
that there had been a similar
named company in bourne
at the turn of the last century,
which was housed behind
the nag’s head. although
little is known of that
company other than its name,
the new Star is one that looks
set to shine brightly for years
to come.

Festival FolliesCardinal Cox on the perils
of adventure.
Flicking through the
catalogue during last year’s
Peterborough beer Festival, i
noticed half-a-dozen brews
described as lager-style beers.
having not drunk lager for 25
to 30 years, i wondered what
i’d been missing out on. here
are my thoughts…
Whim - Kaskade
Fruity, but not the sort of fruit
that i like.
Redwell - craft pilsner
blandly sweet.
harviestoun - Schiehallion
i much preferred the cornish
pasty i had at the same time. i
was beginning to regret this
experiment, much as doctor
Frankenstein might have.
then darren found me some
more, thanks darren.
Kinver Brewery - Maybug
bland. how i wish i hadn’t
thought of this idea, at which
point someone said, “You
should try…”
“no i heffering shouldn’t,
you heffering
heffer. What i should be hef-
fering drinking
is some proper beer.”
oldershaw - Mosaic Blonde
a smidge of flavour.
Flensburger - lager
this was on tap at the
continental beer section and
do you know what the bar
staff did? he said, “that’s
not a full measure,” and then
topped me up – the barstaff.
at that point darth vader
appeared to me and i ran to
him and embraced him and
shouted, “Yes, Lord vader, i
return to the dark side. the
porters, stouts and milds,
and even the brown ales of
your domain i wish to bathe
in. take me Lord vader, you
are the daddy…”
and then it all got a bit
fuzzy… So remember, i’ve
conducted this experiment
so you never have to.

The Beatles
by nick Manning
and brita granström,
Frances Lincoln,
hardback, £12.99
having previously
made scientific
subjects such as evolution and reproduction
understandable to younger readers, this
writer and illustrator team has turned its
attention to ‘the greatest rock band in the
world.’ through charming drawings and
extended picture captions, we are given a
concise summary of the band’s creation,
success and dissolution, along with world
events of the period.
and while it’s not shy in telling of the
deaths of Lennon and Mccartney’s mothers,
the reason for brian epstein’s death and how
the band managed to play for 12-hours at a
time during their hamburg residency are,
understandably, not talked about. given the
amount of books on the beatles that are
released each year, i’m surprised that it’s
taken so long for someone to come up with
such an unusual, yet fun, way of teaching a
major part of britain’s cultural history.
That close
by Suggs
Quercus, hardback, £20
although graham ‘Suggs’ McPherson and his
band Madness are so indelibly linked with
north London, the singer’s early days saw him
move around the country, even having time to
develop a Welsh lilt during an extended stay
in haverfordwest.
returning to the capital and starting at a
‘lawless’ secondary modern, Suggs wrote
Baggy Trousers, inspired by the end of term
inter-school fight.
in this, his autobiography, we look at a
life well lived. one that has seen Madness
play everything from the sweaty basement
of the hope & anchor pub in islington to
the rain-swept roof of buckingham Palace
for the diamond Jubilee, and escaping riots
in greece to causing earthquakes in Finsbury
Park as 35,000 fans danced the night away
at the band’s 1992 reunion festival, Madstock.
the book is a joy to read, although Suggs
has steered clear of the controversies that
surrounded the band in its early days and
seems to have listened to several records at
least five years before they were recorded.
but i’ll let that pass as he’s probably got a
lot on his mind at the moment, wondering if
the government will attempt to privatise him.
after all, he is a national treasure.
