Hundred Dollar Cigar :

Winners of the PM lounge BOTB, Hundred Dollar Cigar performed at the leg-

endery „Bingley Music Live‟ on the 31st of August. With a Kasabian-esque atrib-

utes Hundred Dollar Cigar promise to deliver a strong, powerful, blues driven

performance at any gigs

Point Froggs :

Comparing this band to Wolfmother would be unfair, but sadly

is the only band I can compare them to. With Great strong riffs

and memorable lyrics, Point Frogg have lots of gigs lined up

for the future and are deffinately worth going to see. However,

I‟m sure the band have alot to learn still.

Page 4: Issue Three

With an average age of no older than 16, The MarmoZets are already one of the best on the scene. Winners of the Musicians Centre BOTB 2008 and the best drummer award, there has being nothing but praise being thrown at the band. The MarmoZets are : Becca - lead singer, Jack- lead guitarist, Joe -Rhythm Guitarist, Sam - Bassist and Josh on drums Us here at Beep! want to get rid of the rumours that this band are going along way on the „cute factor‟ and show the public that this band are going far! Do you find your selves being looked down upon due to your age? Not really, if anything it's like an ad-vantage being 14,15 and 16. In a few years time we will still be classed as a young band. The Marmozets started a band for a school competition for music. Origi-nally Joe was not in the line up how-ever, due to Jack falling ill Joe stepped in at the last minute. They then formed together and entered last years BOTB under the name „The Marmozets‟.

If you could have a dream gig in Bradford, with Bradford bands. Who would it be with and where would it be ? Hmmm, we would probably play 1in12 again, it's like the craziest place ever when it's packet out and our first real / proper gig was there. For bands we would have the likes of Minus Jack, Unfinished Drawings, DJ Dips and The Mirandolas. That would be class. You recorded a MarmoZets EP , where can people get it? That went a bit pair shaped. the re-cording quality was pretty poor so we class that as a demo really. Can we expect more recordings in the near future? Yeah defiantly. We are going to bob into a studio in Leeds sometime soon to record a proper EP and get it printed and such. we have a couple of new songs as well that we will put on it. So we will have about 6/7 songs on it. YEYAAH! With such a talented selection of bands in the BOTB this year The Marmosets was surprised to find them selves as the winners and picking up the best drummer award was only an added bonus.

Once you ignore the drunk man next to you saying “Look at them! The guitar-ist is about 10” then the MarmoZets are a fun, energetic and great to watch. The MarmoZets

write catchy power-pop songs with influences such as Paramore and Foo Fighters. As a young band do you ever feel intimidated by older bands? We used to. We used to go to gigs and be like "Crap, they are like adults" but we enjoy it all so much that we don't let the age thing get to us. Do you have any tips for young bands like your selves? Get loads of gigs. Play all the gigs you can. have fun and Enjoy it Who is your favourite Bradford based band? Minus Jack by far. We are all planning on proposing to them sometime soon... If you have not one already go and see the MarmoZets Live. They can be seen playing at Royal Albert Hall, London on the 10th of November and supporting Random hand at the Gas-sienda, Keighley. You can listen to their music at : www.myspace.com/themarmozets

Sadly the lovely local pub/music venue has copme to the end of an era. After many years of great gigs have now come to an end. Beep! Got in touch with Deano the main man behind the Delius. How does it feel to have the De-lius close down? “Absolutely gutted. I've lost my work-place, my future, all my money, my career and my favourite pub in one blow” How many years did the Delius run for? “On and off I've run Delius for about 10 years. But I've had the lease from enterprise for the past 4.5 years” What was the best gig you remem-ber at the delius? “There's been some top top TOP gigs at Delius, the big gigs were good (this et al, sons and daughters, Laika Dog, Everyneed) but the ones that really

stood out were probably the first time the Nearly Men played

(they're ace), Wobbly Bob are fantastic too,

you would never forget

the James Gore Experience

either (for one reason or another), Lab noise are probably the best gig there. The light show was incredible!” What lead to the closeure of the venue? “The downturn in the pub trade, the increase in beer prices, the smoking ban, no-one has any spare cash anymore, cheap supermarket beer, increased beer taxes, increased utility bills, new laws on employment and holidays, the list is endless.” what will replace delius? It's still open (with some other poor suckers in charge). Best of luck to 'em! whats in store for the future for

yourself? I”'m gonna be an astronaut. The first yorkshireman in Space. Investigating the effects of zero gravity on pork pie jelly.” We can only hope that the new own-ers of the Delius pub manage to be host to top gigs like Deano did. Eve-ryone here at Beep! Would like to thank all the staff and everyone in-volved at Delius for all the hard work they have put into the pub throughout the last 10 years.

Ex-front man of DND, Luke Hirst has

being creating a variety of songs for

his solo project.

Luke Hirst has already being featured

on BBC introducing and 2008 prom-

ises a great year for him.

At the moment Luke is performing

acoustically in and around Bradford.

He is also drumming for band „Like A

Pioneer‟ and currently working on a full

band for his solo work.

We reviewed Luke Hirst‟s self titled

EP for issue one of Beep!, we now

want to know more.

What made you leave DND and

start a solo project? “This needs

clearing up I didn't leave DND! I was a

solo artist before DND and started the

band to play my music but it grew into

DND. We split because the band had

gone on its natural course. So I started

up my solo stuff again!”

Are you planning to put a band

together for the solo songs you

write? “I am indeed! If anyone is up for

it get in touch. I‟ve been jamming with

a few drummers, bassists, I have a

backing vocalist lined up and hopefully

a cellist!”

What local talent has really im-

pressed you recently?

“Alt track are mind bend-

ingly good, Eyesore An-

gels are THE best metal band in York-

shire & Sounds of Swami are weird.”

Luke compares his work to the likes of

Weezer, The Flaming Lips, The Zobies

and The Beach Boys, to name a few.

However, he said “i cant compare it to

just one and I'm certainly a few thou-

sand leagues below any of those influ-

ences.”

If you could have a dream gig in

Bradford, with Bradford bands,

where , and who would it be with?

“It‟d have to be a fair epic all dayer

with DND, Sounds of Swami, Alt Track,

Random Hand, Eyesore Angels, a

reformed Aspirin and the Fineline back

from hiatus!”

Where is your favourite Bradford

venue?

“Good ol' 1in12 hands down”

What tips would you give to solo

artists like your self?

“I don‟t know if I should be giving any

advice, but just work your backside off

gigging all over, write songs, obsess

over melodies and buy „Pet Sounds‟.”

Your list of achievements is huge

already, what is in store for you in

the future? “I don‟t have much of a

clue as of yet but the

plan is to sort a back-

ing band, gig a lot and record when I

have the money! work.”

How does the success of playing

live on BBC feel?

“It was a good buzz, was a real fun

evening. Id been trying to get on raw

talent for years and they liked my

newest stuff especially „Evaline‟ so that

finally happened!”

Luke Hirst self titled EP is a great

listen, I would recommend it to anyone

as it has not left my IPod since the

release date.

Luke Hirst can be found playing in and

around Bradford. If you want to hear

more from Luke Hirst visit his MySpace

page which is

www.myspace.com/lukehirst

or tune into BCB 106.6fm on the 24th

September 6pm to hear an acoustic

session with Luke and visit :

myspace.com/beepmagazine to hear

his new track exclusive to Beep!! Fan-

zine.

Band of the month: Never judge a book by its cover. One looks like a road protester and the other is a cheeky faced inebriate but Unfinished Drawings create incredibly beautiful music. The acoustic room at the Bollocks To Poverty gig was packed as they passionately swept through their set. Refresh-ingly, they don‟t strum their guitars in folksy way but at-tack them with such vigour that they become instruments

of percussion not just melody. I first caught them at a BOTB a year ago and was so impressed that I bought the Album “If You Can't Do It For Yourself, Do It For Me”

and it‟s not been off MP3 Player since. At this point they had a cellist with them and I have since seen them as glorious 6 piece but whatever happens to the line-up, at the heart you always have Toby and Tom. Toby as a great voice and he uses it with gusto and saturates his songs with emotion whereas Tom could be mistaken for a fresh faced, giggling fool, and often is, but when performing his focus and skill shows through. Live or recorded they are

superb. They are currently hawking around a CD compilation of several years work. I know previous albums have raised money for charity but I think this one is just providing Tom with beer tokens but I would still encourage you to buy it as it contains too many wonder-ful tracks to list here. I can not recommend Unfin-ished Drawings highly enough. See them live if you can, watch them on YouTube or check out their www. myspace. com/unfinisheddrawings. I just wish they would get back in the studio and give us a new album.

www.myspace.com/youngbradfordmusic

Young Bradford Music is now back on the scene after a large break. They have four new gig dates : 27th September (pictured right) 11th October - Minus Jack, The Frenetics, Shoot The Messenger and Feedback 25th October - Alt Track, Tea and Biscuits more TBC 7th November - The Kabeedies, Minus Jack, Mar-mozets and Bedroom Gymnastics All three of the gigs aim to put out the message to that firstly, young local bands can be put on the bill without huggings of teenagers getting leathered, throwing up and having sex in the toilets. Secondly, they also allow the opportunity for teenagers to show venues they can be trusted and shouldn‟t automatically be given a bad name. And thirdly, they show everyone that the Brad-ford music scene is packed full of great young local talent. Do not miss out on these gigs they are going to be some of the best gigs in a while.

Page 6: Issue Three

Considering that the Demo was recorded in one day the quality of the recording is very good. The lyrics are memorable and meaning full. Almost anyone will be able to relate to at least one of the songs, wether or not it is the man next door who steals your ball, a mate who is held back by their mis-

sus or not being able to dance unless you are drunk. I found myself singing the songs almost immediately and giggling every so often when I related to the words being sung. As a the band is a three piece however the sound is rather basic and at times sounds plain. Nether the less the guitar is chirpy, the bass backs this up and the drums give the songs power. Can‟t really knock anything on the Demo and I Struggled to give any constructive criti-

cism. Maybe try a bit of variation within the Demo

next time around as the songs are slightly similar. Keep up the good work guys and get some live gigs. Review by Out And About Reviews

A really good, jaunty lead track, Beahead, starts this EP .It showcases Paul‟s odd voice perfectly and the keyboards swing this along to its all too short end. Well balanced mixing gives a nice full sound. The simple yet sensible lyrics get you singing along quickly. Disappointingly the other 2 tracks are not as good with the vocal becoming less comfortable on each and the production values seem

to fall with each successive track as though they thought that they had to get 'Bedhead' down and then rush recorded some other tracks. Not bad songs, just not as immediate. I can't say what it is but the vocal style sits less comfortably with me on these 2 tracks. Unlisted on the sleeve is the final track, a cover of "There Is A Light" which happens to be my favourite Smith's track so it was always going

to be difficult to please me but this sounds like a Joe Pasquale tribute to Morrissey. Bedhead is a belting track. More like this please. Review by Scubadog

iAxe USB Guitar - £99.95

The electric guitar is without doubt the greatest weapon in the rock 'n' roll armoury. Indeed the crunching kerrang of a nicely distorted axe is, in our humble opinion, the finest sound in the world. The problem is, achieving sonic nirvana whilst spanking your plank requires all manner of accessories, including racks of pedals and a whopping great stack. Step forward the

amazing iAxe 393 USB Guitar.

Wallet Essentials - Plectrums £7.99 Now here's a nifty idea from the people who brought you the credit card sized spanner. The credit card sized plectrum - three of them, in fact, precision etched into a shiny stainless steel card 0.25mm thick. The card itself measures just 85mm x 54mm, meaning it can take pride of place in your wallet with your far less desirable bank and loyalty cards. www.gadgetshop.com

Eco Friendly Travel Speakers - £19.95

What better way to share your musical tastes with friends while out and about than with these fabulous Eco Friendly Travel Speakers. Not only do they fold down for easy transport and storage but they are made from 100% recycled materials and won't be guzzling any batteries. Universally compatible with iPods and MP3 players they sound great. Take them to the park, the beach, camping, by the pool, wherever you want your music. www.gadgets.co.uk

USB VHS Converter - £149.95

We all know VHS tapes were rubbish. Dodgy tracking, limited lifespan, noisy spools, below par quality…we could go on. So we will. Bulky, clunky, fragile, ridiculously slow to rewind - the list is truly endless. But for all its faults, VHS was the leading video for-mat for almost thirty years. And that's why you've got stacks of tapes languishing in the loft and piled up in the cupboard. And that's why you need the brilliant USB VHS Converter. You can know convert all those un-used videos via USB into a useful format for your computer.

RETAI L THERAPY

Now on a par with Beep! , Alt VM are now set to release their third issue in the upcoming month. With both issues one and two being a great success, we wanted to know more about how AltVM started. We had an interview with Mr. AltVM himself, Adam. What made AltVM set out on a journey to create Bradford’s First and only video magazine? AltVM has evolved from our „Komatoast‟ stuff and filming live gigs. We wanted to produce a regular video which people could view online and see some great local bands on AltVM and in turn go see them live. I suppose the whole idea of AltVM is to promote the local music scene. What made you decide Brad-

ford needed a video magazine? It's not so much that Bradford needed a video magazine, it more a case of we are all from Bradford and we wanted to sup-port the local scene in the best way we could and hopefully AltVM is doing that. What made you choose Pete and Micky as presenters? A small audition was held; Pete and Micky were the best. Pete helped us out one year interviewing on a battle of the bands final so we had a good idea he was going to be spot on. Micky was not meaning to audi-tion but was brought by Pete and we bullied him into auditioning,

which is a good thing as they work quite well together. What do you see in store for Alt VM for the future? At the moment we are still very much in the early stages of the video mag‟ so there could be all sorts in the future of altvm. i think one thing I am eager to get going is altvm on DVD for people to pick up for free You can find out more about AltVM and also view the latest issue at : www.altvm.co.uk

Page 8: Issue Three

This being my first trip to the

Gasworks club i was wel-

comed by a freidnly organiser

under the name of Matt Kula.

First on the stage was local

solo act Tom Wilson. Tom

delivered a confident per-

formance although at times

vocals were a little but rough.

Tom‟s style combined Reggae

with folk to give an original

array of songs.

Tom was followed by Green

Grass and The Burnouts.

Green grass and the Burnouts

we‟re just not my cup of tea.

Although the band sounded

well practised and the per-

formance was generally tight,

the band didn‟t seem to be-

having fun. The songs seemed

to drag out like a bad Oasis

album, I do not be planning to

see this band any time soon.

I have seen the contract a fair

few times and was expecting

the usual performance. How-

ever this time around the band

delivered a strong, energetic,

exciting performance.

The two part vocals worked

perfectly and the confidence

of the band only added to the

great sound. The Contract

played a series of powerful

songs with great riffs, strong

drum fills and vicous bass

lines. Considering that actual

band was only a three peice

( guitar, bass, drums) the

sound had such power. When

Matt introduced the second

guitar, however, I found the

sound to be a lot better. I hate

to use the word attitude, but

this band we‟re full of it.

They hammered out their

songs „10 Reasons‟ and „Just

Cry‟ which were deffinatly

crowd pleasers.

The thing that stood out the

most for me was the fun the

band seemed to be having.

They gunuenly was enjoying

them selves and had fun play-

ing the songs they played.

ommend it. Or visit their

I have to say, I was a big fan of the band

before even being asked to review one of

their tracks. It's so nice and fresh to see a

good funk band every once in a while, and

FK are so refreshing to listen to because their tal-

ents are endless. Never Look Back has great guitar

pieces and funk drumming. The song itself is a

masterpiece of potential from every single member

of the band. A great uplifting song that I'd recom-

mend to anyone. Review by Lucie Hudson

Buen Chico - Tell ‘Em

MYSPACE TRACK REVIEWS

I don‟t think this is Buen Chico‟s best piece of work ever. However, I think it shows massive improvement

within the band. They seem to have learnt a lot since the album „Right To Re-Arrange‟. Tell „em is a very

catchy song but as a big Buen Chico fan I find it a little lacking comparing to some of their older work. I

find it slightly too generic although the track is very well produced. The track shows little energy com-

pared to the likes of „Choosing My Religion‟ or „Giving your Gifts‟

Although, if I was to just take the track as it is and not know any past history of the band I would say it

was a top track and shows that the band can produce great pop songs. I look forward to hearing a lot

more from this band and hopefully a new album will be in the pipeline.

Freyed Knot - Never Look Back

Alt Track - No More

While Alt Track fail to achieve anything more through their lyrics than stating the obvious, their

ambient, electronic, musical expertise does not disappoint. They introduce the song with a

very sparse texture, ice cold piano and cool computer compiled drums that could keep a sta-

dium sized crowd in absolute suspense. The song is gradually built up by pianist Micky's heart

-wrenching backing vocals. Layered over this is guitarist/keyboardist Pete's catchy two line

phrase, that refuses to let you go away from the listen without it looping around your head for

the rest of the day. This slickly moves into a thumping bass beat, where finally the captivating

duo release us from the suspense, letting loose a full-on “fill the dance floor” drum & bass section. All this comes

complete with sing-a-long-a-synth-parts. Alt Track satisfy our need to boogie and live up to their reputation of

producing the best laptop beats from Bradford. Review by Ben Clifford

Slum Hunnies - Jive

After hearing the opening to

this song, you think "oh no.

Another mickey take of Rolf

Harris", but then, after getting

further into the song, you sort

of realise that you've begun to tap your foot, nod your

head and actually do rather like it. The Jive has a very

memorable riff, and some good vocals. The only thing

I'd say it lacked would be a section with abit of variety,

but overall, a good song. Review by Lucie Hudson

Mark Husak, founder of Granadaland, collaborator with Mono, BD1 Live and Bradford music week, is setting up a new project - „Good Form Club‟. The project consists of a record label, club night, a blog, design studio and band management. Beep! talked to Mark about the closure of „Granadaland‟, „Mono‟, „BD1 Live‟ and his new project „Good Form Club‟. 2008 was a good year for you with BD1 Live, granadaland and Bradford music week all being great suc-cesses. How did it feel to have the bradford music scene in the palm of your hand? “It didn't feel too good, it was bloody hard work. I nearly collapsed with ex-haustion at The Hop (Bradford Music Week) and there have been times where I have wanted to quit the promot-ing game all together. But seriously I am proud of what I have achieved so far in my career. I managed to secure a record deal for one of the artists I man-age, I brought some ace bands to Brad-ford, I was involved in Bradford Music Week. I have had fun along the way so its all good. I also discovered Spodni Pradlo, the most kick ass band ever to come from Bradford.” You was un-officially one of the best promoters in Bradford, what made you stop Granadaland? “Jee thanks, I just got bored of it to be honest. I did it for nearly three years and felt that I need a change. When I started Granadaland we were the only real club night / promoters trying to push Bradford forward. But now there are

loads. I just want to do something different and get excited about music again. Also I think that most of the action is happening at The Beehive and i wanted to explore this. The Beehive has a propper 'club' feel to it. Dark and seedy. You know? “ Granadaland has stopped. Your collaborators Mono have stopped printing. Can we expect BD1 to carry on or will it close too? “No way. We wouldn't do that to you. BD1 LiVE will go on as lang

as we can get the bands. We have had a new approch to BD1 in the way that we will only be booking bigger bands for the whole theatre. We would rather do 2/3 sell out gigs a year rather than loads of smaller ones. In fact , I have put two offers in for bands today. BD1 is defo still going on strong” What is the name of your new project and whats it all about? Its called Good Form Club which is more of a creative thing rather than just been a run of the mill promotions com-pany. It is basically an excuse for me to do everything that I love. My two main loves are art and music and Good Form Club will let me work closely with them both. Good Form Club comprises of a club night, a record label, a blog, a design studio. We also manage bands and will be putting on gigs. We are gonna do a lot more djing and we are going to do stuff in Leeds too. When can we expect it to be up and kicking? “The launch night is at The Beehive on Saturday 20th September. Its going to be rad. Playing live are Model horror (Fake DIY records), Wonderswan and Monty Casino. We have 4 djs; LL Cool-sak, Fastlove (Money Dudez), Willy Rook (Blue Rinse) and Mike Dalli-ance. There is also gonna be loads of free goodies like badges, mix cds and a fanzine. And watch out for the Graphic dispay and some serious photocopy art. How much would a band expect to pay for Good Form Club to create artwork for them?

It depends how much we like „em. You are known to have contacts with some of the best bands on the scene, would you be able to reveal who will be joining your label? “Well our first release planned is going to be a Christmas single from Le Tour-noi. They are great. probably the sexi-est band in the business. They have really got their asses in to gear of late and they put on a killer show. We will be releasing Spodni Pradlo's debut single before them in London catch on.” In a ‘perfect’ world what bands would you have on the label? “Someone who is gonna make some serious dollar. Just Kidding. I like two bands from Leeds at the moment, Wonderswan and Dinosaur Pile-Up, but I think they have already been snapped up. My mate who signed Vampire Weekend digs them both and I know a few A+R guys have been to their shows. I think Dinosaur Pile-Up are releasing something on Dance To The Radio. Dont quote me on that.” If there is only one thing you do this month Beep! Recommend that it is the launch night of Good Form Club. You Cannot miss out!

I have to say, I was a big fan of the band

before even being asked to review one of

their tracks. It's so nice and fresh to see a

good funk band every once in a while, and

FK are so refreshing to listen to because their tal-

ents are endless. Never Look Back has great guitar

pieces and funk drumming. The song itself is a

masterpiece of potential from every single member

of the band. A great uplifting song that I'd recom-

mend to anyone. Review by Lucie Hudson

On the 19th July the New Beehive Inn, held host to an all day event with 30 bands

playing across three stages. The event‟s main purpose, aside from just having a

great time, was the raise money for Actionaids „Bollocks To Poverty‟ charity.

Sherlock Promotions teamed up with local enthusiast Lucas Jubb to put on a spec-

tacular event.

Fun was had by all as the day ran smoothly from 2pm till

2am

In a great success the event raised £1000 for charity.

In the near future Gasworks and Sherlock promotions look to be

creating an Under - 18‟s night. The night will aim to attract young

audiences, allow young bands to perform at the great venue that is

Gasworks and to prove that fun for young people does not have to

involve the consumption of alcohol. Check www.myspace.com/

sherlockpromo for details on this and any other events Sherlock

promotions will hold host to.

Don’t Look Down + White Felt – New Beehive – 9/08/08

DLD opened (rather appropriately given there was a shooting nearby only days before) with “Do you want to see

my gun?” Played with passion and fire the first song set the standard for the rest of the set. Frontman Christy is

not just a great guitarist he also happens to have more front than the Gallagher brothers put together but that‟s

Ok because he backs it up with good songs and strong performances. This was the first time that I noticed how

good the harmonies are too provided by Will, the band‟s eye-candy, and XXX the band‟s bass player in an old

man‟s body. The choruses prove to be great sing-alongs and Christy works up such a sweat that he is temporarily

blinded by hair product running down his face. Each song thunders out clearly and even when Christy appears to

have forgotten the words his bass section keeps looping confidently until he returns to the song. DLD are a real

force on stage and well worth catching live.

netics promise to put on a good

show.

They received the prize for „Best

Crowd Reaction‟ whilst performing

their selection of up-beat, powerful

indie songs.

want to know more. Vote for them!

Ult Cult have not

being on The Brad-

ford scene for a

very long time, yet

still manager to be

support bands for

both Los Campesi-

nos! And Mystery

Jets.

With soothing vocals and vast, sweeping melodies

Ult Cult do nothing but charm the ears of their lis-

teners.

New to the scene, The Spirit of John are a two piece blue-grass band. The band can be seen mainly gigging in Leeds, but hopefully in Bradford some time soon. The Spirit of John are destined for great things with already being fea-

tured in Sandman Magazine. I promise you that this band will

make you slap you leg in true hill-billy fashion, or at least nod your hear. Look out for this band in the future, I am sure we will be hearing alot from them.

Twice finalists of the musi-cians centre BOTB, Minus Jack still only have an average of 16. They have supported Ash at St.Georges hall during Bradford music week and have been Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac‟s house band for the week. Now on their second EP release, the future looks promising for the young-sters. Having been on the scene for nearly two years now , the band have defi-

nitely established a fan base and learnt a lot about the music business, the local scene and song writ-ing. The boys have come along way from their monthly appearance at the 1in12 club. If you want to know more about the band vote for them! Visit our MySpace on which you can hear „Tiptoes‟ never before heard on the internet.
