Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time   Dear brothers and sisters, Peace! We have come to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior when we were baptized and confirmed. It is certainly the most significant decision we can ever make. In today's Gospel Jesus reminds us that his word is not merely a preaching to be accepted but a choice that must be lived in concrete situations. Since we have accepted Christ into our lives, He must be given priority over other loves and commitments. His teachings are to be lived both when convenient and when inconvenient. We have Mary as our model and example. Her greatness lies in her discipleship. We can identify with her in this. Come September 8, that is, Wednesday this month we will again celebrate the birth of our Lady. Let us together praise God for giving us such a great and faithful Mother. Let us join in offering Mass at 7:00 pm followed by a pot-luck. God bless you, Fr. Samuel E. Loterte, SSS

A Prayer for Workers O glorious Joseph! Who con-cealed your incomparable and regal dignity of custodian of Jesus and of the Virgin Mary under the humble appearance of a craftsman and provided for them with your work, protect with loving power your sons, especially entrusted to you.

You know their anxieties and sufferings, because you your-self experienced them at the side of Jesus and of His Mother. Do not allow them, oppressed by so many worries, to forget the purpose for which they were cre-ated by God. Do not allow the seeds of distrust to take hold of their immortal souls. Remind all the workers that in the fields, in factories, in mines, and in scien-tific laboratories, they are not working, rejoicing, or suffering alone, but at their side is Jesus, with Mary, His Mother and ours, to sustain them, to dry the sweat of their brow, giving value to their toil. Teach them to turn work into a very high instrument of sanctification as you did. Amen.

Hello, I’m Franciscan Father Greg Friedman with the Sunday Soundbite for the Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Years ago I lived in Milwaukee for a while, and as I traveled back then through downtown and near Lake Michigan, I would pass a highway bridge, sitting all alone. There was no way to drive up on the bridge; no ramps had been built leading onto or away from it. There seemed to be no construction going on anywhere near the bridge. I often wondered about this strange sight. Had the bridge been completed before there was enough funding to build the connecting highways? That story reminds me of today's Gospel: Jesus cautions his audience about the cost of discipleship. Jesus will embrace his cross completely, giving his all. We, his followers, must do the same. Jesus urges us to give our all, carrying our own cross and following after him. How does he drive home his point? Jesus uses a couple of down-to-earth examples: A builder must calculate the construction costs before beginning to build. A king must know if he can win a battle with the troops at his disposal. Jesus' stark conclusion: we cannot be his disciples without a total commitment. I’m sure that bridge in downtown Milwaukee has since been completed. But how are you and I doing as we work on our lifelong project of Christian discipleship?

In these days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, Re-pent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Now John wore clothing of camels hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, con-fessing their sins. But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming from baptism, he said to them, You brood of vipers! Who warded you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our ancestor; for I tell you, god is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, and he will clear his thresh-ing-floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn

MISSION STATEMENT: Malia Puka O Kalani is a Roman Catholic parish in Keaukaha, Hawaii, dedicated to building a church community filled with the Holy Spirit, guided by God's word, and enriched by the Hawaiian culture.

FROM FR. JOE HENNEN: I deeply appreciate the thoughts and prayers of everyone. The week between

Aug. 29 and Labor Day is a week of schedul-ing for me. Not much more will hap-pen. The doctor told me that the surgical bi-opsy will take place after Labor Day. Hence, I am left with simply "twittling my thumbs." Therefore I decided to visit my soon-to-be 97 year old mother in Minnesota. Like any mother, she is filled with fear that one of her children will go to the Lord before her. It will help her to see that I really am not skin and bones and that I have plenty of en-ergy. I return to New Jersey on the Sunday before Labor Day. Hopefully, the doctors will then have me scheduled for the surgery and the resulting final diagnosis and treat-ment plan. I again encourage all the parishioners to use this as an opportunity to prove that our won-derful little parish is stronger and bigger than any one person. I am deeply grateful to Fr. Joe Carroll for leading you in the celebration of the Eucharist. The rest of the vitality of our parish is up to you. I left you on August 15th, our patron Feast. We dedicated our-selves to be "Mary's House," a place of peace and welcome, a Christian center of Aloha, a place that expresses and brings forth Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. You remain in my thoughts and prayers. With Love......Fr. Joe Hennen

"The names will stay on the prayer list for three month unless we are notified to keep the names longer. All the names presently on the list will remain on the list until Nov 1, 2010."

PARISH REGISTRATION: If you are not a registered parish-ioner and would like to join our

Hawaiian Catholic Community, please regis-ter to join our Ohana. Registration forms are available at the entrance to the church.

BAPTISM CLASS POSTPONED: There is a Baptism Class scheduled for Saturday, September 18th for parents/guardians who will present a

child for Baptism during the months of Octo-ber, November, or December. This class will be postponed until Fr. Joe returns. Please call Samantha to register for the class. She will notify you of the date when it is resched-uled. Samantha's phone number is: 966-6350. RELIGIOUS  EDUCATION:  The time to start the Religious Education classes is right around the corner. Please make sure your children are registered so that we can all begin the program together. Reg-istration forms are available at the entrance to the church.

OFFERINGS: We are again reminded that our spiritual community lives and functions in a material world. Money is needed to keep the material aspect of our parish together. The Finance Committee ap-proved an annual finan-cial budget which is

based on an average weekly KOA Bowl of-fering of $1,500.00. You can see that on some weekends we fall very short of that amount. When Fr. Joe Hennen returns he will give a "Stewardship Accounting." In the meantime let's try to keep the traditional tith-ing standard of 10% to charity/church.
