ANZAC DAY April 25th 2013

Page 2: Issue Number 106 May 2013

The past month has been extremely busy with finalising our exciting new ‘Tastes of Panmure’ event. Thanks once again to the twenty four

restaurants, café’s and food outlets who are participating in this event that runs for one week, starting on 10 May.

Another new event for us is Panmure’s Youth ‘Kick-Out’. The Panmure Library are kindly hosting the event which will be on Saturday 11 May from 1 – 3.30pm. Linda Warren from the Solomon Group has managed to gain the support of twelve training providers who will be available to discuss and promote their courses to Panmure’s youth. Along with the serious ‘stuff’ we have arranged art and music activities, games, food and fun.

Thank you to Members of Parliament Pesata Sam Lotu-Iinga and Simon O’Connor for asking the Panmure Business Association to co-host a ‘Breakfast with the Prime Minister’ along with Gary Holmes, Manager of the Glen Innes Business Association and Sally Eustace from the Ellerslie Business Association. I attended a similar event last year that was co-hosted with the Onehunga Business Association and I found the opportunity to talk to other business people most useful. I found the Prime Minister to be a very entertaining and informative speaker.

Gary and I have been discussing a networking opportunity such as this to invite not only the members of our own Business Associations but to also reach out to business owners, managers and property owners in the broader Tamaki business community. With projects such as AMETI and the Tamaki Redevelopment Project, both Gary and I believe that a cohesive Tamaki business community is important for

the future of this area of the Auckland Region.

Four years ago, Faris Alshams purchased the Panmure Mini Mart, refurbished the premises at 146 Queens Rd and expanded the product range to include some Middle Eastern food. In March he sold the business and we were sad to see him leave Panmure. However I was delighted to bump in to him at his new job at the Harvey Norman Store in Mt Roskill. Faris is enjoying having more time with his family.

The AMETI project has triggered a number of relocations with the latest being Latai To'ofohe owner of Urban Cuts moving from his current premises in Lagoon Drive to the old Flight Centre building at 69 Queens Rd. We are delighted that Latai decided to stay in the Panmure business community.

I encourage you all to find out more about the Draft Unitary Plan and the three Business Associations in the Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board area are fortunate to have a special meeting just for the building/business owners and managers in the area to focus just on the commercial zoning and building regulations. For more information see the Unitary Plan invitation.

I was emailed this link which I found to be very helpful in understanding the new draft rules around building and development. http://transportblog.co.nz/2013/04/22/ensuring-quality-intensification-in-the-unitary-plan/

SHOPLIFTERS. From reports I have received form you I understand shopliftiers are still practising this criminal activity in Panmure. Unfortunately often this activity is not immediately reported to the PBA or the Police. We have excellent CCTV

coverage in Panmure and more often than not we are able to identify these offenders. We however cannot obtain a conviction unless the offence has been reported to the Police. We therefore encourage you to report the incident as soon as possible and also to let us know so we can assist the Police. Shoplifting is more often than not an offenders first stepping stone in to further criminal activity. A conviction or even a quiet word from a ‘man in uniform’ could put a young offender back on track. Help us help you.

LOCKED CARS WITH IMPORTANT ITEMS INSIDE. I am seeing many of your vehicles, although locked, with laptops and handbags left on the seats. Can I remind you to place these items in the boot or the glove box otherwise you risk a broken window and loss of goods. It is a very expensive exercise having a broken car window replaced.

YOUNG PEOPLE. We still see an alarming number of young people roaming our streets in the small hours of the morning. Unfortunately more often than not they are up to no good and are taking advantage of night fall to tag and steal. If you know of any young people that need guidance or a family that needs help with their youth there are plenty of support group about to lend a hand. Another alternative this month is to send them along to our Youth ‘Kick-Out’ Event. This event is to encourage our youth to look at their talents and interests and see how they can use these to better their future.

THANK YOU!

Don’t be fooled ! POLICE WARNING.

We can now reveal who the ‘real’ Miss Piggy. Csilla and

her colleague Howard at SawdenTAX, are both ‘foodies’

and have delighted in being able to bring to you the

wonderful variety of foods in Panmure. Together with

their love of food, and their quirky sense of humour,

many of our newsletter readers have had a good

chuckle each month as well as getting a regular update

about what’s special on the menu in our

restaurants and food outlets.

Last month a local Asian lady was duped out of $40,000 plus a lot of jewel-

lery after she was tricked into putting her money and jewellery in to a bag so

it could be blessed by a Chinese Superstition Master. She was told her son

would have a deadly accident in 3 days if she didn’t have a blessing. Of

course the bag was swapped during the chanting of prayers and when she

had waited the stipulated 20 days to receive back her ‘good luck ‘ she was

left with a bag full of rice and newspaper. It seems to me unbelievable that

someone could fall for such a prank but the Glen Innes Police say it’s the

second time they have dealt with a complaint such us this locally.

Thank you Gary and his Volunteers for organising the clean up in our Service Lanes,

a good job done and a benefit to both Panmure and the Salvation Army. Thanks

also to Kevin of Ace Hire for providing equipment. We must also take this time to

acknowledge the long tome friendship of Ben Bataille who was a long time resident

of Panmure. Gary and his Team took time to visit Ben after his stroke last year and

also were instrumental in a Farewell Service to him on Monday April 15th. Gary

would like to take this time to thank Mania and Beryl who took special care of Ben

whilst he was in need at the Kings Road Pensioner flats.

Thanks to Dorothy at Sugarcrafts for another of your delicious cakes.
