'We are complex people carrying our wounds that make us determined to go it alone, to nurse our hurts and regrets and to

maintain our pride at all costs.' Gary Wade

We will always be uniquely complex individuals. Mystery makes up life and is part of every single person. There will always be a part of us that others will never understand. Equally we can never fully understand everything about someone else. While it is true that others may not fully understand our hurt, pain, confusion, isolation, anger or whatever is going on for us, we should never have to go it alone. No person can journey through life carrying it all on their own. That is why there is always such a relief when we can just share and talk about what's going on for us. In sharing it, there is a great release from the pressure of going it alone. If you follow the life story of Jesus in our Gospels it was all about how he allowed other people share their story. There was no room for solo runs or isolation but all about including every person's story, no matter how dark and painful.

All were welcomed by the Rector, Fr. Louis Grech. After the recitation of Evening Prayers in the chapel all made their way to the community room where drinks and anti-pasti were available in abundance. There followed in the school hall a ‘fraternalissimo’ and ‘generosissimo’ dinner, no holds spared by Fr. Alfred and his team. Afterwards all the guests returned to the community for coffee, etc., etc.

On the 1st of April 2016, ten members of the Salesian Brigade ‘B’ Coy left for a Gozo expedition under Jesmond Cassar and Joe Camilleri’s leadership. The first campsite was at the Dwejra Valley where we had to challenge strong gusts of wind. Everyone cooked dinner on stoves and settled for the night.

On the 2nd April we re-packed everything for a 3-hour hike and headed to Kercem. During the hike we had to walk through an almost impenetrable reed valley and also had the opportunity to see very large birds of prey. Sandwich lunch was prepared near the Lunzjata Valley and then we headed to Nadur by van to start the next hike in the afternoon. This meant a rough hike and bouldering beneath the cliffs that lie between San Blas Bay and Dahlet Qorrot. We then settled for the evening in a picturesque disused patch of field, well-protected from the Gregale wind and sea spray. Tents were again pitched and dinner prepared. A campfire was also prepared to finish off the day before going to sleep. We also had the opportunity to meet the owner of the fields who said that such fields were owned by his ancestors and go back as far as medieval times.

On the 3rd of April the group walked towards the Qortin of Nadur where we visited the 1667 Isopu Tower in Force 7 wind gusts.

After walking to the town centre and eating pizza, we headed back to Malta.

The April session of Oratory Helpers shifted its focus on spiritual formation, through a Lectio Divina under the guidance of Fr. Eric Cachia SDB. Throughout this session, a passage from the Scripture was read and explained in detail by Fr. Eric himself, then a moment of reflection and sharing was done to see how one relates his or her life to the passage. It was interesting to see how many different perspectives one can take when reading such a passage, and such a session is also helpful to see where one stands in life. Being a Salesian Leader is not only learning and developing skills such as those of teamwork and communication, but it’s also about focusing on oneself and seeing where one’s relationship with God is.

JUNIORS’ CLUB HIKE Mariah Ruggier

On Saturday, 7th May 2016, The Juniors’ club section of the Oratory went on an adventure. A small but beautiful group of 17 participants took part in this wonderful hike at Gnejna. It was full of adventure, fun, excitement, and laughs along the way. We truly had an adventurous experience as we climbed and slied down slopes and hills, climbed onto rocks, played in the sand, explored big caves, observed the beautiful surrounding nature and sea, and enjoyed each other’s company! We ended the day with a swim in the beautiful sea. Our group was surely and certainly enjoying themselves and each other’s presence; we were truly one. I’d like to thank the Leaders who were

there and organised t h i s activity.

GUESTS VISIT SENGLEA Laurence Essery sdb

There have been a number of visitors in recent days who, thanks to the chauffeuring of Fr. Essery, were welcomed and taken on a visit to the Senglea Community.

Fr. John Horan, our former two times Provincial, accompanied a small catechetics team from Ireland composed of an FMA and another religious Sister plus a secular priest who were in Malta on a working holiday! The Senglea community offered tea and cakes and a tour of the historic Church and Convent culminating on the roof so that the group could enjoy the privileged view that they have of Grand Harbour.

At a later date, Fr. Martin Coyle, the Provincial of the GBR province joined Fr. Jim McGarry SDB who was on a visit to his old stamping-grounds, St. Patrick’s, where he passed three fruitful years as a student. They went on a guided tour of the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) with Fr. Antoine and concelebrated Holy Mass in the College Chapel before making the short journey to St. Philip’s where they enjoyed a sumptuous

lunch and later were able to sample the vistas provided by a climb to the roofs of the house and church.

Another successful Erasmus+ Youth Exchange held at the Salesian Oratory in Sliema was organsied and implemented between Monday 28th March and Monday 4th April 2016. With the theme “EQ in Intercultural Sensitivity: the difference that makes the difference”, 29 participants and 4 leaders, from: the host country Malta, Lithuania and Czech Republic had the opportunity to contribute and benefit as much as possible from their own international experiences in terms of personal growth and international competencies. The workshops

organised were aimed in developing the mature emotional intelligence (EQ) skills required to bet te r understand, empathise, tolerate and negotiate with other people through social dialogue. Kicking off was done by specialised facilitators and by the group as well through energisers, and well planned workshops, to get to know each other better and create a friendly, relaxed, safe and healthy environment as much as possible especially among the partners. The theme song, created by the host young participants was an ongoing energiser for all the participants and put on whenever necessary. The evenings were spent in a socialising surroundings and this helped all participants to get to know each other better and better. The day would end right after the afternoon workshop, with reflection and evaluation session which in my opinion was a perfect opportunity for each participant to speak out his/her reflections on the day. Half way through the project, we have spent a day out on an enjoyable cultural visit to Birgu and Valletta, the capital city, which through an organised photo hunt activity in Birgu and a cultural visit to Fort St. Elmo in Valletta, the participants also got to know Malta and its rich history and culture. Most evenings were spent by each country showcasing their traditional ways of living.

YOUTH EXCHANGE: ‘THE DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE’

The last day was quite emotional which at the end, was the aim and objective of this youth exchange. An overall evaluation of the whole week was made on individual basis and amazingly enough, the “EQ in Intercultural Sensitivity: the difference that makes the difference” was quite reflected on by most of the young participants. We want to thank the Salesian Oratory and most of all our national agency: EUPA, who again gave us another opportunity to grasp the concept of the Erasmus+ great opportunities provided and also to gain more skills and compentences to make us more sensitive and deal better with other cultures and to make the most of other learning experiences and projects.

Fr. Jim first came to Malta as a nineteen year old ‘teacher and assistant’ in 1968 assigned to St. Patrick’s School. He stayed three years during which he distinguished himself as a Salesian, a musician and an athlete. Along with Fr. Tom Williams (Bro. Thomas of the ‘Tailors’) and Fr. Essery and a couple of pupils of the School he represented the Malta Athletics Association (MAAA) in road races against teams from the British services stationed on the Island.

Bro. James returned to give a hand during the subsequent three summer holidays, before being ordained priest in 1975. Fr. McGarry spent most of the following years in Scotland. He is presently resident at St. Joseph’s, Bolton, before taking up parish work again in Liverpool later in the year.

OUR VISITOR: FR. JAMES ‘JIM’ McGARRY SDB

Fr. Charles Cini SDB hosted a guided tour of his beautiful island home for Fr. Jim McGarry and Fr. Laurence Essery (chauffeur and guest).

It was no coincidence that the first stop was St. George’s Basilica and the neighbouring museum. Then on to Ta’ Pinu, Xlendi, and Dwejra, before settling down to a handsome lunch at Marsalforn.

The weather excelled itself and the gratitude of Fr. Charles’ guests was deservedly profuse and heartfelt.

During the course of the visit the tourists encountered at various junctures Sr. Georgina FMA escorting her live-in guests from Livorno.

On the 14-15 May, SPYS organized the

last of a series of preparatory sessions

for this year's group, in the form of a

live-in which was held at Villa Psaigon in

Dingli.

During the live-in volunteers were asked

to prepare activities and crafts, had

their comfort zone challenged, were

made aware of safeguarding, as well as

being given an overview of the code of

conduct necessary for taking pictures

and publishing them... And, of course,

time was made for Good Morning and

Good Night reflections, Mass with Fr

Paul and a barbecue while following Ira

Eurovision Song Contest.

These sessions have wrapped up the

tenth year of such preparation for SPYS

volunteers. Returning volunteers are

MOTHER'S DAY AT THE SALESIAN ORATORY SLIEMA

This year mother’s day was

celebrated with an unusual gesture

prepared by the youths of the

Oratory. During prayer time, the

youths got together on a Friday to

write down messages that they’d

like to say to their mothers and

guardians, these messages were

then collected to compile one

letter with messages of thanks and

appreciation. This video was

projected and a letter was given to

the mothers during Sunday Mass.

It was truly a great experience both

for mothers to directly hear

messages that their children had

written and for the youths to have

the opportunity to express

themselves. Elinore Falzon

FORM 3s ACTIVITY Paul Spiteri sdb

Summer is approaching. And for the Form 3 members of the Juniors Club, this Summer will be a special one as they will be part of a formation programme preparing them to become leaders of the Oratory. For this reason, an activity was held for them in order to start growing more as a group and spend some time together. We went to Bowling on Saturday 21st May in the afternoon. Besides the fact that it was fun, it was surely quality time to start binding more as a group, together with our leaders.

EUROVISION NIGHT AT SALESIAN ORATORY SLIEMA

Saturday 14th May 2016 was Eurovision night. It was organised at the Salesian Oratory in a different way... The Oratory ground was transformed into a Eurovision open air restaurant, with a big screen and surrounded with flags from European countries and 'fjakolli' plus a great carpet with cushions to relax on. Gazebos were set up to cater for food and drinks. The Salesian Brigade helped with burgers and fries. One could also choose from a lovely Maltese platter. We also had delicious cup cakes :-)

JOB SHADOWING EXPERIENCE IN MUNICH FOR STAFF

From the 24th till the 30th of April Mahmoud el Bakry (House Leader) and I had the opportunity to broaden our knowledge through a job shadowing experience in Munich. This has been the outcome of an academic-professional relationship there is between Katolische Stiftungsfachhochshule Munchen (KSFH) and St Patrick’s Residential Care Services. When we arrived in Munich we were greeted by a student who had in previous years done his internship at St Patrick’s. At the university the staff were really helpful. We settled-in and went out for a city tour. Munich is fascinating with its historical sites and its magnificent open spaces. On Monday we kicked off with a visit at the Adelgundenheim residential care home. We observed, shared and learned more about other working models, chains of command and interactions between care staff members and youngsters. We also had the opportunity to interact with young people and listen to their experiences, concerns, dreams and their day-to-day life. The young people’s experience has given us a deep insight of how care working affects their life. This exercise enabled us to get in touch with the fact that the same human struggles are experienced in different personal ways. Another unforgettable experience was when we lectured and shared our expertise with social work students from Germany and other European countries. Their response and interaction were remarkable. The following day we delivered a presentation with the aim of promoting the services provided at St. Patrick’s. Cont’d on next page

TOUR OF TA' QALI STADIUM Paul Spiteri sdb

An interesting activity for the members of the Juniors Club was held on Saturday 21st May. Although most of our children and youths love football, a tour to our National Stadium in Ta’ Qali was an unusual experience. We visited the Millenium stands, VIP areas and VIP stands, changing rooms, MFA offices, stadium tunnel and many others. Thanks also to Mr. Alfred Cachia, our tour leader, who is a past member of our Oratory. We had also time to p l a y i n t he C e n t e n a r y Stadium. It was surely a wonderful experience where we all had fun.

JOB SHADOWING EXPERIENCE IN MUNICH FOR STAFF

It was time to head back towards the Maltese islands. Nonetheless we felt enriched by the baggage of experience we were coming back with. Distances are far and customs differ; yet we are still the same; we are human beings with more or less similar feelings, emotions, struggles and a lot of wonderful things to offer and share with each other. We have been stimulated to see the good that lies within ourselves and in others.

GAMES APP TO SUPPORT DON BOSCO ANIMATORS Don Bosco Youth-Net ‘ivzw’ has released a games App for Smartphone and tablet. The App consists of a unique collection of over 240 games to inspire group activities. The game App is a fun and interactive tool to be used by animators and youth workers on youth exchanges, summer camps or training courses, as well as an inspiration for playing group games in youth clubs, schools and oratorios. You can download the Games App from our Games App portal page, or directly from ITunes or Google Play. The App has a search function where you can search on name, age

group, type of playing area, type of game. There is a special search function, which searches for game appropriate for “playground animation”. These activities are ideal for animation during lunch-time breaks in schools. The games use a set of symbols as extra illustrations for the type of game: for example: grass if it is play on a field of grass, an umbrella is the game can be played inside. A user can “like” by clicking a heart at the top of the screen, creating a list of favourites. If you shake the Smartphone, the App will show a random game in the collection. As games are culturally determined, it is important to use the App as inspiration and adapt it to local cultural setting in which it is used. The collection of games is included in the App. This means that once the App has been installed, the user doesn’t need connection with the internet to have access to the games. DBYN will make annual updates of the games database. The App also includes a calendar with all upcoming activities of Don Bosco Youth-Net. The App has been originally developed by DBYN’s Belgian member organisation in Dutch. With support of DBYN’s German, English and Irish member organisation we develop the English release. The App has been co-financed by the Erasmus+ programme and the European Youth Foundation through their structural grants for DBYN.

BOSCO SUMMER SCHOOL REUNION NO. 5

After an epic six week journey with kids, leaders and preleaders, unfortunately all things must come to an end. However, after this journey together, it is believed that all the crew who took part in summer school should stay in touch and continue the children's journey. This is why we organised these reunions. On Saturday 14th May, the fifth and last BSS Reunion took place at the Salesian Oratory. During the reunions the previous leaders and preleaders of summer school are selected to take care of an allotted number of children and at these reunions many team building activities, icebreakers and spiritual reflections take place. After time allotted with the groups, we then come together as one group in the chapel and have a prayer session as one big Salesian family. After reflection time in the chapel, we, then, regroup in the senior section and go wild playing games together, playing table soccer or table tennis, gather around together and watch a football game or actually play a game in the ground! These reunions are ones not to be missed!

This year’s Comino Expedition was carried out between a good group of ten 13 year old ‘A’ Company members both females and males and was held between the 13th and 15th May 2016. This group was being coached and trained during the weeks before at the Salesian headquarters. The coaching was composed of the awareness of camping equipment, the importance of packing the backpack, pitching and breaking of tents, diet, knots and teamwork. As training period was concentrated from January onwards this year the members were even asked to increase their training periods during the week and fortunately enough we had an enthusiastic group all keen and willing to learn. We crossed the channel on a high powered boat and arrived at Santa Maria bay around 15:00hrs. Immediately the training the members had was seen as they all gave a helping hand in transporting the equipment to the designated area and within minutes commenced pitching their own tents. The first evening was dedicated to exploring our surroundings and cooking our evening meal. Soon after, our first night walk led us to the wonderful subterranean cave with the famous inlet sea where the children are always mesmerised by such an attraction.

SB ‘A’ COMPANY EXPEDITION TO COMINO Cont’d from page 24

Saturday is the day of the expedition and this was made up of a 3.5hr walk across Comino where we had the opportunity of seeing a number of attractions such as the unused bakery, cemetery, the cave with the collapsed ceiling, Santa Marija Tower and the coastal battery. At each location we stopped for short rests and water breaks and enjoyed the scenary. From the last attraction, we made our way all around Comino’s east side where we walked along the cliffs with amazing views. The remaining time following this walk was spent, swimming, fishing, getting to know each other even more and hearing mass at the small chapel slightly up from the camp site. This year the team of leaders was composed of David Bonnici, Maria Chiara, Alex (a parent volunteer) and myself who assisted each other in being present during all the activities we organised.

Sunday morning was with us in the blink of an eye. Following the breaking of tents, we carried out a number of knot exercises to increase the members knowledge on this subject and sometime after made our way towards the quay to board the boat. We arrived in Malta around 13:30hr; this was the end of this year’s expedition. I can say that this was another great experience with a group of ldedicated members and leaders which encourages me to start preparing for the next one next year.

SLIEMA ORATORY: FEAST OF MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS

On Sunday, 22nd May, the Salesian Oratory, Sliema, celebrated the feast of Mary Help of Christians during the 7:30pm Youth Mass. Fr Eric Cachia was the main celebrant at the concelebrated Mass where he described Mary as the mirror of the Holy Trinity.

Refreshments, prepared by various helpers, were served after the

Church function.

On the 24th, feast day proper, at 7.30pm, Mass was celebrated after the recitation of the Holy Rosary. Fr Paul Formosa, our Rector, was the main celebrant at the concelebration. He described Mary as a precious and rare jewel. The whole Oratory community and the ADMA members took part in thanking Our Lady for all she does for and with us.

Welcome to Sliema once again! Livorno group at our live-in area.

For the third consecutive year, the FMA schools of Santo Spirito and Maria Ausiliatrice of Livorno, came for a whole week to receive English lessons in the morning and excursions in the afternoons.

Their presence among us is always very welcome for the good spirit and joy, typical of the “livornesi”, which they bring along with them. Thanks to their teacher Gloria Lepori who follows them with real motherly and Salesian solicitude, to which they respond with good behaviour and by showing interest in all that is offered them.

This year the group was composed of 12 students from Prima media together with their two teachers, Gloria and Honorina. They went away glad of their experience and their teachers are already looking forward to next year’s visit.

SPYS ON A TREKKING EXPERIENCE Claudia Chircop

On Sunday 22nd May, a group of youths who will be going on a missionary experience this summer organized an afternoon of trekking at Gebel Ciantar in Siggiewi. Accompanied by beautiful weather and a load of energy from the youths themselves, the trek took course for around 2 hours. Enjoying the beauty of the Maltese countryside along with some good chats between friends, the trekking activity was also an opportunity to meet new people, relax and burn off some calories! Most of these calories however were soon after regenerated, as the trekking event came to an end with a homemade cake sale and coffee. All proceeds collected from the trekking event and the cake sale will be going towards organizations in India, Kenya and Brazil, where the youths will be effecting their voluntary work in the coming months.

EDUCATING YOUNG PEOPLE and KEEPING THEM SAFE

MCAST Chaplaincy Event Presentation of Safeguarding Commission Report

Don Bosco placed a lot of importance on the education of the minds and hearts of the young, linking this with a preventive strategy to keep them safe. Today, his ways continue to inspire us to safeguard young people and help them develop the skills to conduct their lives wisely.

The Leaders of the Y.E.S. group held a live-in at Senglea and a fund-raising Cake Sale event in

preparat ion for the 2016 S u m m e r Camp.

Below, Fr. Joe Portelli poses

for a picture with Salesian Animators Hassna Jabal and Spaniard Angel Garcia Safont, as together they work to create a safe
